Aquarium Maintenance

Having an aquarium built and installed into your home or workspace can add an exciting element to any room. If thought about correctly it should look fantastic, and keep on looking fantastic for as long as you have it. However, if your aquarium is poorly maintained it can quickly become a bit of an eyesore. From murky water, algae to poorly fish, a unmaintained tank is not a good look but all these problems can be avoided quite easily by understanding a few basic things and keeping to a simple maintenance routine. This article aims to give a bit of advice on things you should consider when setting up a new tank.
Water Chemistry
Understanding the basics of water chemistry is the first step to having a healthy fish tank full of healthy fish. You need to know what elements to test for, and what levels this should be. Most fish get sick due this area of fish keeping being neglected so it is important you follow a few simple rules. You can purchase water testing kits from most aquarium shops and the items you should test for are; Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates as these are the main three chemicals that can harm fish. To check the general stability of your tank you should test for PH levels and water hardness. When you first set up your tank, try to test the water every few days and don’t stock any fish until you are happy the water is OK. Once your tank is established you can reduce this to monthly testing, plus testing after an event such as a filter change.
Water Changes
Water changes form an important part of aquarium maintenance. The main reason for this is that by changing the water you will reduce the harmful chemicals (as discussed above) and also replace the hardness of the water, thus maintaining a healthy balance. It is recommended that you change around 25% of the water every week or two. Never change all the water as doing so will completely ruin the healthy environment you have worked so hard to achieve. One thing you must remember is that you are doing these water changes for a purpose so always go by the results of your water tests instead of following a strict pattern. Every tank’s needs differ, so take this as only a guide and try to think about what your tank requires.
General Cleaning
From time to time, your tank will get mucky and this is perfectly natural. If your aquarium is positioned in direct sunlight, you will probably find that you may have problems with algae on the glass. To get over these issues, try to keep on top of them with a basic cleaning routine. It is advisable to clean the gravel every few weeks with a special gravel cleaner. This will get rid of any build of dirt and muck and prevent your water from getting too mucky. To clean algae on the glass, simply use a scraper to scrape the algae off. The amount you have to do this will depend on the amount of algae you have, but try to catch it before it gets out of control. General cleaning tools can be purchased from any aquarium shop.
