Fish Tank Sand Pros and Cons – Should You Use Sand or Gravel?

Fish tank gravel is what most people use to cover the floor of their fish tanks. While gravel is a popular choice, there is also aquarium sand available at pet retailers and online fish supply stores. Aquarium sand can give your aquarium a tropical look, but fish tank gravel is economical and easier to use. The best decision for your tank can only be made after you weigh the pros and cons.
Gravel is the easiest fish tank floor covering to use. It comes in many different colors that you can use to customize the look of your tank. You can have everything from neon green and pink to natural looking grey and brown stones.
Gravel is also easier to clean. You can use a gravel vacuum during the cleanup process to suck up small bits of debris and waste. The vacuum will eliminate the tiny pieces while still leaving the gravel intact on the fish tank floor.
On the other hand, gravel shifts a lot more than sand does. If you plan on using live plants in your aquarium design, you may find that they will become disheveled and unplanted over time. It can also display pockets and needs to be smoothed out from time to time.
Aquarium sand is a bit trickier to use. You must turn off the filter on your tank when you first start to use the sand. It is very cloudy to begin with and you have to give it time to settle. You also may need to get an upgraded filter that won’t get stuck on the tiny sand particles. Debris shows up much more clearly with sand than it does with gravel.
On the positive side, live plants root well in the sand surface. Sand gives a much more professional look to your tank. It’s also an aesthetically pleasing choice if you have a tank with tropical fish.

Setting Up Your First Fish Tank
I still remember every minute of the day I got my first fish tank. Of course, I said I wanted to start small, so I got my 10 gallon tank with 3 small Goldfish…six months later, I had a 75 gallon tank with 9 Goldfish. So, if you don’t want to repeat the whole process very soon, I would recommend getting the largest tank that you can accommodate.

Its Description and the Proper Care For the Fish
Gold fish are diggers and they scatter the smooth sand on the leaves, harming thin and less tough plants – specifically fine-leaved selections. They frequently burrow in the gravel and may uproot plants and destroy their stems. Plants that are grafted on the rocks or wood like java ferns are good options.

silicone removing and refithing so that will be no problem .
The salt did make the kit go fuzzy
.
Yeah man I’m going to move soon because i wont get this one upstairs lol , we needed a forklift to get it on the trailer behind the car , i think it’s about 200-300 kilo’s , + 1100 liters = 1300-1400 + 200 kilo’s decorations = 1500 – 1600 kilo’s and than the thing were it will go on LOL.
I caint wait to move ,.. we probably buy a house with a concrete floor lol
.
Peace and love,
Erik

No i bought them all secondhand
On marktplaats (dot) nl
The 125 liters was never used though so it was new but a fraction of the price. 50,- and new its 175,-
The big one came from a salwater breeder but the fool also had a weed/marjiana plantage so everything needed to go.
The tank is only 3 years old , but i will refith the silicone for a peace of mind , and make the silicone lines a big bigger and better
,… I had some experience with

February 9, 2011 - 8:07 am
Hey Man ,
Thanks a lot for the compliment and don’t worry i love to answer your questions
.
Yeah man don’t take scavengers , corridors might work . Yeah if you put the snails in a other tank they will multiply , but when put with the puffers the won’t because the like to snack a lot
.
I just leave the shells , butter not to be to much in the tank with your hands because of the stuff on your skin . Make sure to hand feed them they will get very attached to you
.
Peace out my friend, E
February 9, 2011 - 8:59 am
Ok thanks for all the info. Ill just stick with the regualr setup then. Man its amazing this little fish is this well respected as a bully lol. so no scavengers but plecos. and i can just get snails from petsmart. They almost beg you to take them cause they multiply like crazy. So just get a few and put in a tank and they will multiply? And do I have to remove the shell from the tank. I know im asking alot but you seem like the only professional on here lol
February 9, 2011 - 9:47 am
Yeah bloodworms and of course snails other wise their teeth will get too long and they love them . You can pick them out of your garden or just grow them in your other aquarium.
They love shrimps for sure so don’t keep them with the puffers.
Loaches ?,… like khuli loaches ,.. they will get attacked , I got them with a other aquarium and I needed to put them with the puffers and i have seen bites out of the fins ,.. don’t know if they are still alive . So it’s not a good call ,..
February 9, 2011 - 9:59 am
Yea thats what I hear and thats why I want some. yea I got some nice caves in my tank so they will be safe. And I feed them bloodworms right? I hear they dont eat flake food. And I guss ghost shrimp wont be good lol. I hear they good scavengers but will most likely become dinner for the puffers lol. And you think loaches would be bad. I really want a scavenger in there.
February 9, 2011 - 10:23 am
Hey Romeo,
Yeah that sounds great , don’t worry about the pleco it’s like a reinforced tanker , but make sure that it’s bigger than the placo’s other wise make sure that it can hide underneath / behind some stones.
I have seen a placo with 10 puffers in a 10gallon tank at a pet store and it loosed his fin trough that ofcourse because the puffers were hungry i think . My placo hade some bite marks but now that he is bigger they are scared lol.
Btw puffers are very smart VERY smart;)
February 9, 2011 - 10:58 am
thanks again. Im about to order 3 of them and some neon/cardinal tetras. And the barbs will work just fine cause im going to use them to cycle the tank. So my tank will have, dwarf puffers, cardinal tetras/pleco and tiger barbs. Sound good?
February 9, 2011 - 11:56 am
So basicly when the fish are big and flashy like platies / mollies / goldfish / will get attacked .
Than the more agressive kind of fish will survive since they are a bit smarter like the ramirezi cichlides / betta . I hope to have ansered your question.
Peace out,
Erik
February 9, 2011 - 12:47 pm
My puffer attacked slow swimming fish because they are in front of the food and are stupid enough to stay.
Placo’s , ramirezi’s are pretty smart , …. neon tetra’s are small and fast and are no treath for them . But i’m talking about dwarf puffers and not the salt water ones.
February 9, 2011 - 1:18 pm
Hey Man ,
As you can see i hold the pufferfish with neon tetra’s , gold tetra’s and sherry barbs.
Every quick swimming fish will be ok. Like the Dwarf Ramirezi cichlids .
I would not recommend the sharks/rainbowfish or the cat fish they are slow(er)
Just like the gouramis they are slow and will be attacked for sure .
I don’t know wich place you called but usaully they just say anny thing to sell you fish and are really not educated and not even holding fish tanks there selfs .
February 9, 2011 - 1:33 pm
So the only thing I can have in the tank with them is tetras? I hear they will eat the tetras lol. A place I called said these will go with the dwarf puffers but I doubt it lol
# Barbs
# Gouramis
# South American Dwarf Cichlids (such as Rams and Apistogrammas)
# Sharks
# Rainbowfish
# Loaches
# Plecos
# Scavenger Catfish
February 9, 2011 - 1:50 pm
Hey m8
,
Cool to hear from you again , make sure you get dwarf puffers , they will be fine with cardinal tetra’s and pleco’s . Just make sure you have enough blood worms and snails to feed them
( the puffers that is) .
P.s the redtails puffer some times attacks the puffer8 one so be sure to get 2 of the same kind.
Peace my friend
