Researchers at the State University of New York, Buffalo studied the outcome of pet ownership in 48 stockbrokers being treated for hypertension. 24 of the stockbrokers received a pet and the results found a significant reduction in their high blood pressure, a larger reduction than in those who did not receive a pet. “Most studies show a direct benefit from stroking a pet, for example, but this one goes a step further in that the act of owning a pet lowered blood pressure,” says Alan Entin, Ph.D., past president of the division of family psychology of the American Psychological Association. Published in the Journal for Occupational Health Psychology, one study reviewed businesses that allow pets vs. businesses that do not. The results show signs that pets actually improved the work environment, and amplified the employees’ mental health and mood.

While saltwater environments often require more work and dedication than their freshwater counterparts, they provide a substantially different appeal. The key to success, as with any pet, is planning ahead. Before you jump into purchasing and filling your saltwater tank, you will need to do extensive research regarding the types of fish you plan on keeping as well as what type of habitat you hope to have. Here are some basics which need to be addressed for a saltwater tank:
- Saltwater habitats:
Saltwater tanks can be found in three basic varieties: Fish only, Fish only with live rock, and reef setups. While fish only environments are the most economic option, there are some clear advantages to incorporating live rock into your tank-namely that they provide a natural filter to the habitat and they are more aesthetically pleasing without upgrading to a full-scale reef environment. If you have the time, money, and dedication for a reef tank setup, it will pay off in the long run. Reef habitats can house many more species and provide a more engaging tank.
Also, starting small or simply may seem like a good option, but after the setup required for any size tank you may soon wish you had started with at least a 35 gallon tank. It is also worth noting that smaller tanks require more frequent tests to maintain appropriate chemical levels in the water and are more susceptible to rapid change.
- Equipment:
Purchasing the right equipment to begin with will save money on replacing fish in the long run. Some pieces of equipment that should accompany your saltwater tank include a heater, protein skimmer, thermometer, and test kits. More complete lists can be found easily and depend on the specifics of your desired tank setup.
- Quarantine Tank:
Quarantine tanks make the transition much easier on your saltwater fish and will prevent the spread of disease to others in your aquarium. It is highly recommended that all fish, under all circumstances, be quarantined before introducing them to your tank. This is not a lengthy process, nor does it require an elaborate setup, but it is in the best interest of your fish and ultimately you wallet.
- Other Tank Accessories:
While all the above items are essential to bear in mind for the success of your saltwater tank, there are a few more things to keep in mind.
A background should be painted or taped to the back of the tank. Painting (always on the outside of the tank) is generally a better option since it won’t be damaged by spilled or leaking saltwater. Also, in addition to live rock, sand should be added to the tank. However, you should only use sand designed for aquarium use so that you know it won’t be harmful to your fish. Invertebrates, such as sea urchins, starfish, and coral also add depth and color to your saltwater tank and can contribute to the ecosystem. Lastly, aquarium plants can help keep the tank clean, attractive, and more interesting for your fish.

The BiOrb and BiUbe range of aquariums are a set of beautifully designed fish tanks made from very strong plexiglas acrylic and are intended to make fish keeping a simple, straightforward and non time-consuming pass time.
In the box is everything that you need. They come with everything that you need to quickly and easily put together a fully functional home or office aquarium. Full instructions are included and even some fish food, the only thing absent is the fish.
A unique feature througout the BiOrb range is the built-in 5 stage filter with its central airlift and replaceable filter cartridge. Biological filtration on a large scale occurs in porous ceramic beads which serve as the substrate and which house vast numbers of the good bacteria which ‘cycle’ the aquarium.
Very advanced lighting is available throughout the whole BiOrb range called ‘Intelligent LED Lighting’. This light source simulates sunrise and sunset by gradually raising and lowering its intensity at the appropriate times, after sunset it automatically fades into a blue moonlight.
A ring of silk plants is available made to surround the central filter tube.
Accessories include tank stands, heater pack, digital thermometer, colour swaps, silk plants, a three stage timer and even a marine pack.
The classic BiOrb range is a set of globes ranging from the Baby BiOrb (15 litres or 4 gall capacity)) through the BiOrb 30 (30 litres), the BiOrb 60 (60 litres) to the newest addition to the range the BiOrb 105 (105 litres or 28 galls).
The BiUbe range is not cube shaped as you might think but very elegant cylinders. They hold around 9 galls of water and come with either a coloured top and base or as the ‘BiUbe Pure’ which is made from completely clear acrylic.
The square or rectangular ‘BiOrb Life’ series have a wrap around top, bottom and sides and a clear front and back. Sizes range from a 30 litre square shape to two rectangular ‘Portrait’ tanks 45 litre and 60 litre capacities.
One criticism is that they are not cheap but the main criticism was that they are all quite small tanks and not able to hold a lot of fish of any size. With the coming of the BiOrb 105 this criticism has been answered because 28 galls is a good size for a home or office aquarium.

What’s So Great About Biorb Fish Aquariums?

The second issue is quite simply that these aren’t the cheapest fish tanks around. Buying a traditional fish tank and all the accessories may prove considerably cheaper than buying a Biorb kit which may put off some buyers. Alternatively knowing which you have everything required in one box and that any accessory you buy from the range will fit your tank perfectly means that many people do opt to pay that little extra to save on a regular basis and hassle of working out which pieces of aquarium kit will go together.
Apart from these two minor downsides the Biorb aquarium range is an ideal way to keep fish in the home. They are probably the best way to get going keeping fish and will add interest to any room of the home.

Aquarium care is a necessity but plenty of fun. Aquariums are a great addition to the interior of any home, or even restaurant. Aquariums are fast becoming one of the leading hobbies around, and many people use aquariums for decorative purposes. Aquariums are available in a wide variety of shapes, the most common being rectangular. However, aquariums are not an item that can be set up and then left unattended. Aquariums are not difficult to keep up with as long as tank maintenance is performed periodically and with a little care.
Here are a few tips for maintaining a healthy aquarium environment for your fish that will ensure they live a long and happy life for you to enjoy for some time to come.
1) Keep an eye on your aquarium every day.
2) Wipe down the inner and outer glass of the aquarium to keep any algae from accumulating on the inside; this helps to improve the condition of the water as well as enabling you to see the fish.
3) Never use any kind of detergent or soap to clean inside or outside the aquarium, as the chemicals will cause harm and distress to the fish.
4) Take care in cleaning the inside of the aquarium glass as gravel will scratch it if you happen to pick some up when you put your hand inside.
5) Although you may think its a good idea to periodically change all of the aquariums water to give the fish a fresh start this is a very bad idea.
6) Tap water is not suitable for your fish and plant life. Additives that make tap water suitable for us humans can harm fish and micro organisms in aquariums.
Aquariums must be cared for regularly or they will become dirty and stagnant, causing the inhabitants of the tank (the plant life and the fish) to suffer and to eventually die. Every week, replace between 25 to 30 percent of the water in the tank. No more than 40 percent of the tank water should be changed at once. Fish are very sensitive to the ecosystem balance in the tank and any change can cause a large shock to their systems.
If you wish to clean the filter fabric instead of replacing it, do not rinse it off in the tank, simply take some of the tank water into a small bucket and rinse it there. Keep in mind, that larger tanks are easier to take care of than small tanks. It is a good idea to only replace and maintain half of the aquariums filters at a time; leaving the other 50% in place until your next scheduled maintenance.
Properly maintained aquariums and ponds add a look of professionalism to offices, a homely feeling to domestic houses and a colorful talking point in restaurants.
