All About Filters and Your Fish Tank

Since fish aquariums have toxic buildup from natural and unnatural sources, it is important to have filters added to your aquarium to prolong your fish’s life. In all there are a couple types of filters, which include the biological filters and the chemical/mechanical filters.
How biological filters work?
Biological filters work by supplying denitrifying system. In summary, biological filters remove nitrogen from water. Denitrifying converts nitrates into ammonia, nitrites, and nitrogen. Now, you may see that ammonia and nitrites are toxic, yet fish adapt well to nitrites since the toxic converts to non-toxic. Biological filters works by using soil-enriched bacterium, which is used to convert ammonia compounds, accordingly converting them into nitrates. The conversion makes nitrogen available for fish. Nitrogen is colorless and odorless gas, which non-metallically chemicalizes as elements to produce natural resources.
Mechanical filters remove solid waste or particles from fish water. To see a list of mechanical filters go online and look for foam filtration cartridges, gravel, and/or floss. In fact, you will need both floss and gravel with various filters.
Chemical filters activate carbons. The filtration system includes absorbents to remove ammonia, as well as water softeners. Since fish water comes from ground or tap water, it is important to purify your water supply to maintain healthy fish. You can also check out water purification systems, which can minimize chemical buildup.
Types of Filters:
Aquarium filters include corner filtration, outside powered filters, under-gravel filtration, foam, canisters, and flow-through filtration.
How do the filters work?
It depends on which product you purchase, however corner filtration works by supplying air. The air creates an insignificant vacuum cleaner, which extracts the water into the corner filtration. You can combine Floss filtration to activate carbons, which will assist in filtering the tank water. Combining the filters will supply you a biochemical reaction, which slows the growth of bacteria. Corner filtration supplies ventilation. The filters however are limited in their ability to act, therefore you should use gravel combined with floss and corner filters to get the best result.
Electrical pumps, or outside powered filters assist by extracting huge amounts of water through filters, which passes over filtered floss and carbons that supply sufficient water supply. The pumps will provide ventilation, as well as support a larger array of fish, more so than other filters. All filters should be changed responsively, since dirt buildup decreases the filters ability to perform.
You want to add gravel to the bottom of your aquarium, since it will slow bacteria growth. Under-gravel filtration works as a vacuum to extract water from gravel. Use gravel since it will supply your fish with adequate biological and mechanical aids without using chemicals. This filter has its downsides, which includes the use of vacuums to remove debris. Unlike the pumps, this system will not support all your fish in the tank. Rather, the filters support a smaller amount. Foam filtration attaches to air supplies. The supply is then situated in the aquarium to supply ventilation and biochemical reactions that filter growth of bacteria. Foam filters are biological kin, which supply mechanical filters to trap rubble. Canisters are filters which combine mechanical, biological, and chemical filtrations by lining with a pump. The downside is this pump requires consistent attention, otherwise it will overload fairly easy. Flow-through provides continual drainage solutions and water supplies. The system supports a large body of fish, yet the water must be conditioned. Ironically, this system is not one of the most recommended. Killifish is another type of fish for aquariums, yet the killifish are hard to find.

Learn About Live Coral Before Setting Up A Reef Tank
Posted: Mar 26, 2010 |Comments: 0

Live coral can create a beautiful and mystical underwater scene in your home or office, and once you have set up an aquarium and filled it with some of these wondrous creatures you might find that you don’t need any fish at all. You may also find that some fish, like the Golden Butterfly, are not compatible with reef aquariums because they like to eat the corals. So before you go looking for live coral for sale, you will want to learn as much about caring for these saltwater animals as possible. The first thing you will need to do before you shop for live coral is set up your aquarium. Most hobbyists suggest getting at least a 50-gallon tank, but if you really want to create a good visual impact, you will probably want something bigger. Then you will need the rocks, filters, temperature gauge, lights, skimmer, salt mix and other tools. Decorations and plants can also give the tank a really authentic underwater look. Once you have the water at the right conditions for your specific types of corals, then you can place them in the aquarium. Some of the live coral for sale in the local fish store and online will be better for a beginner’s reef tank than others. Most of the preferable choices will be in the soft coral family, although there are certain hard corals such as the Montipora and Pagoda that are also good for beginners. The most well known soft corals that beginners usually start their tanks with are the Mushroom Corals, Colt Corals, Star Polyps, Zoanthid Polyps, Button Polyps and Flower Leather Corals. There are various books and guides that will help you set up your reef aquarium correctly, and there is additional information about fish like the Golden Butterfly that you will want to avoid. There are also many types of fish you can learn about that are very appropriate for cohabitating with corals.

Goldfish are dear to a lot of people and people really want to know a lot about them. The most crucial thing to know about your goldfish is that they are very prone to deadly disease. A lot of people wonder why their fish die with one or two weeks or sometimes with a day or two. The answer is that perhaps their fish succumb to some deadly infection. It also means that you are not doing enough to protect your goldfish from those diseases.
So which are the most dangerous goldfish disease and how to prevent them from attacking your dear goldfish? First learn which the two most common yet very dangerous goldfish are and also how to treat your fish if one of these diseases attacks your fish. But most importantly, you must learn how to protect your fish from these two diseases.
Deadly Goldfish Disease Number One – Ichtyopthirius
It is more commonly called Ick and is the most common as well as feared goldfish disease. It is a potentially fatal disease. Ick is a parasite that and it remains attached to the body of goldfish.
Causes of Ick: This disease occurs due to undue stress upon the goldfish as a result of bad water conditions like fluctuations in the water temperature and a poorly maintained fish tank.
Symptoms of Ick: If your goldfish has Ick you can notice small white spots in their skin which actually resembles salt grain.
What happens: This is a parasite which is attached to the body of the goldfish when the fish is really tired due to bad weather inside the tank. It feeds of the body of the fish. The condition of the fish worsen as Ick starts to lay eggs and reproduce at a very fast pace.
Treatment for Ick: If your goldfish is suffering from Ick, you must treat him or her with a specially made anti-parasite fish medication. Moreover, it is better to increase water temperature in order to make medication more effective. It is always better to consult and expert
How to prevent this goldfish disease: Ick can be prevented from attacking your goldfish by properly maintaining your tank condition. Keep it clean and fresh. Change water weekly and clean the filter as well regularly.
Fin Rot
Another deadly disease attacking the goldfish is fin rot. In this disease you will notice that pieces of your goldfish’s fin are rotting away gradually with passing time.
Causes of Fin Rot: Fin rot is also bacterial infection. It takes place because of poor and unhygienic water conditions. It generally attacks a fish that is already suffering from any other disease like injury caused by another fish. As they are already week this bacterial infection takes over the fish.
Symptom of Fin Rot: Fin rot is very easy to detect. You will notice frayed or rotting, as well as pale pink looking edged. Moreover, there will be blood streaks on the fin tissue.

Aquarium Fish Care- All About Start Up
Okay so you have decided that you want to own a fish tank. Great! All you need to do is go to the pet store and pick out a tank and the prettiest fish in the store, and you are ready to go right? Wrong! Starting up an aquarium is a process. It takes time and a lot of patience. If you are a beginner, it is recommended that you start out with some hardy freshwater fish, but don’t buy the fish just yet. You need to set up the aquarium first. Most aquarium retailers will sell an aquarium in the form of a kit. This takes the guess work out of purchasing.
In order to get your tank ready, first rinse out the tank with clean tap water. Rinse the gravel and any substrate as well. If you are using an under gravel filter, place it in the bottom of the tank. Next cover the filter with approximately two to three inches of gravel. Fill the tank about a third of the way full with water that has been de-chlorinated. The next step is to add any plants or decorations to the tank. Check with your retailer on the specifics for adding live plants. Some live plants need to be anchored, while others can be left free floating. Next connect the air pump and filtration system, and fill the tank the rest of the way. Lastly put the lid on the tank and let it cycle for one to two days before adding any fish to the tank.
Watch the tank for cloudiness and check the temperature and P.H. of the water. If all is clear you may add a few hardy fish. It is important to choose fish that can withstand high levels of nitrites and ammonia, because these levels are always high in a new tank due to the nitrogen cycle. Debris in the tank from fish excretions help to generate the good bacteria that is needed in order for the fish to survive. Since there are currently no fish in the tank this will take some time. It usually takes about four to six weeks. Once you have purchased your fish, let them float on the surface of the tank in the bag for about fifteen minutes. The purpose of this is to allow the fish to become acclimated to the water temperature in the aquarium. Carefully add the fish into the aquarium using a net and a bucket. Don’t pour the water from the bag into the aquarium. The water from the bag could throw off your perfectly regulated water, as well as introduce new bacteria to the aquarium. Watch the fish carefully for signs of stress. Stress causes illness in fish. Monitor their activity levels. Inactive fish or fish hanging out near the surface of the aquarium indicates stress. There is a stress coat that can be used, if symptoms of stress do appear. Wait anywhere from a week to a month before introducing any new fish to the aquarium, allowing the existing fish to become acclimated to their new environment.

All About Care for an Acrylic Aquarium Kit

All About Care for an Acrylic Aquarium Kit
The practice of keeping aquariums came about in the late 1800′s. They were fairly crude. Usually these ancient aquariums only had one side that was made of glass, with the other three sides being made of metal or wood. Most aquariums consisted of fish that were native to the region of its owner simply because of availability. Also most old school fish tanks contained only fresh water fish. The reason being that salt water would corrode the metal frame that held the aquarium together.
Aquariums drastically changed in the 1960′s with the invention of silicone adhesive. Metal frames became obsolete and more people started to keep salt water fish and invertebrates. More recently glass tanks have become less frequently used due to the flexibility of acrylic. Literally flexibility! Acrylic aquariums are far more for forgiving than there glass counterparts. If a heavy object strikes a glass tank, it will almost certainly break. The flexibility of an acrylic tank will prevent this catastrophe from happening. In addition, acrylic offers more flexibility in design than glass. Acrylic aquariums have been made into everything from coffee tables to gum ball machines.
That being said, there is a short downfall to owning an acrylic aquarium. They do scratch more easily than glass. When cleaning your aquarium, be careful not to use paper towels, and harsh or abrasive chemicals, as they can scratch the acrylic surface of the aquarium. Always use a cleaner specifically labeled safe for acrylic. Use plastic or rubber scrubbers, rather than metal to clean the sides of an acrylic tank. Be careful not to accidentally pick up a piece of substrate or gravel while cleaning the inside of the tank. However, if you do happen to scratch an acrylic aquarium, all is not lost. The tank can be repaired, unlike glass. There are acrylic repair kits available at specialty pet stores, your local hardware store and of course online.
When purchasing an acrylic aquarium kit, there will be many different options to choose from, at many different price points. Aquarium kits can be purchased at places such as specialty aquatic pet stores, from huge retail chains, or again online. A fish lover can choose from small cylinder shaped tanks that can double as a coffee table lamp to wall huge wall sized aquariums. While, there are some basic things that will be included in most kits, such as, a filter, some substrate or coral and sometimes lighting, the kits themselves can vary greatly. It really doesn’t matter where you buy your starter kit, but keep in mind that it is extremely important to buy your fish from a reputable dealer. Don’t buy fish that are hovering near the surface, or that are located in a tank with other dead fish. Fish diseases are extremely communicable. Be weary of a fish dealer that refuses to catch a specific fish out of the tank for you. After all this is going to be your fish and you have a right to choose.

What I’ve Learned About (Fish Tank) Filters
Aug 5th
What I’ve Learned About (Fish Tank) Filters
Filters are not the sexiest part of your fish tank; most of the time, they’re the part you’d just like to forget about. But we all know that choosing the right filter, and maintaining it properly, is the key to the health of your aquarium. So let’s look at the three types of filtration systems that the average fresh water fish tank can use:
First, there’s biological filtration – that’s what we call all the helpful little bacteria which break down ammonia and nitrite into less toxic nitrate.
These bacteria need lots of oxygen, and a surface to cling to, whether that’s plants, filter media, gravel, or live rock and sand (that is, rock that’s inhabited by microorganisms). Remember that antibiotics will kill good bacteria as well as bad, so move a sick fish to a separate hospital tank before you treat it!
Biological filtration alone is enough only if you have a very small number of fish in a large water volume – if you want a lively tank, you’re going to need one or both of the other types of filter.
The second type is chemical filtration, which uses chemical reactions to remove waste substances from the water. Activated carbon, Algone (plant fibers), and zeolite clay (the type used in cat litter) can be used, and each type has their advantages and disadvantages. Carbon can sometimes leach phosphates into your tank, which promotes algae growth – look for brands that are “low ash” or “acid washed” to avoid this. Zeolite is good at removing ammonia, but can interfere with the establishment of a good nitrogen cycle, so be careful about using it in a new tank.
The third type is mechanical filtration – that’s just your basic porous filter that catches solid particles before they can go back in the water. This type doesn’t do anything about liquid or gaseous chemical wastes. These work best if the filters in them are replaced or thoroughly rinsed every two to four weeks, otherwise they get clogged, or the wastes will decay in the filter until they’re small enough to get washed back into the tank. Remember that a mechanical filter won’t affect wastes that have settled onto your gravel; you’ll need a siphon or vacuum to get rid of those.
Personally, my favorite type of mechanical filter is bonded floss – it doesn’t get clogged as easy as the other types, and you can change part of it at a time to preserve your beneficial bacteria colonies. You can also get loose floss, sponge, or paper cartridge filters. You just want to pick one that traps enough solids to keep the water clear, without getting plugged too often.
Happy filtering!
Together with Iszuddin Ismail, Mic Hudson is sharing his wealth of knowledge on saltwater and freshwater tropical fish tanks. You can start with a free ebook on decorating your fish tanks. Download Fish Tank Aquascape at http://www.PetFishGuide.info
www.oscarfish.co.uk How to make a really cheap aquarium tank filter. Once the filter is made connect the airline to the air pump place the filter totally immersed and switch on the air pump. The air bubbles will rise in the tube and draw water with them. As this happens water will rush in through the filter down through the holes that you melted in the bottom piece. this causes a flow through the filter.

The Truth about Salt Water Aquarium Filters

The Truth about Salt Water Aquarium Filters
When you set up a salt water aquarium filter then you will find that lots of things are involved in this. You will need various gadgets like a heater or a filter and also a test kit. You need all this if you want to maintain your salt water aquarium.
As everyone knows, fish are like normal human being, they eat and they pass out waste substances. Then through the process of nature, this waste turns into bacteria. Hence you need salt water aquarium filters if you want to clean out these germs. They also help you to get rid of elements which make the water dirty and hence they keep the entire aquarium safe for your pets.
When it comes to this filter you have two main types, the first is the external filtration system and the send one is called the internal one. You will find these filters at any sort of fish shop. But then the local pet shops usually don’t have these. Sometimes, even if they do they don’t have good quality ones.
So try and get them from the specialized shops. Now you should know a few things about these salt water aquarium filters before you buy them. Let’s start with the internal filters. Now these are basically used in those tanks where you have an internal tube. This tube is going to connect the water from the main tank to a sump tank which is present below.
The sump tank will be situated just below your main tank. The water in the fish tank will also be made to pass through a foam type thing. This foam will stop all types of bacteria and also unhealthy germs from getting accumulated. This way you can also filter the water.
After this the water will finally be pumped back into the main aquarium which is situated on the top. Now you will see that this process is a continuous one. The only defect of this system is that it is very noisy but then when it comes to effectiveness, it is very effective.
Then we have the external filter which is the most effective salt water filter available in the market. But then it also comes with a price tag. It is the most expensive one which is available as well.
But then the amount of money which you pay for this is actually worth it. This is something which is placed outside of your fish tank and it is just like the internal filtration system. Here there is a long black tube which is the filter and it is very silent and barely makes any noise and it is also very effective.
I have been setting up saltwater aquariums since I was a kid, I’m sharing my experience because I don’t want your fish to die before you can enjoy them, you can download my free saltwater aquarium report and find more information about saltwater aquarium filters when you visit my site http://www.sunnyfishtank.com/blog.php?blog_id=15479
