Water Test Kits for Aquariums

Each test kit is rather expensive, although it’s possible to save some money if you purchase a master test kit.
How do aquarium test kits work? The process is very easy – all you have to do is dip the strips in a test tube containing your aquarium water, and compare the color on the strip to the information cards that come with the package.
Another type of test kit comes with liquid droppers containing a solution you drip into a test tube of sample water. Then you just shake and wait a few minutes for the results. Again, match the color in the test tube to the color on the card to find out what the results mean.
Saltwater master test kits look for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and even alkalinity.
Ammonia builds up in a saltwater aquarium from fish waste and leftover food that has begun to rot. It’s extremely important to keep your tank free of ammonia, as it’s the main reason why fish die. Readings should always be 0.
Nitrite develops when bacteria present in the tank feed off ammonia. In new tanks that have not been cycled, nitrite levels are very high. Nitrite is toxic to fish just like ammonia. To remove nitrites from the water you have to conduct a water change. Bacteria in the water and filters eventually transform nitrites into nitrate. A nitrite reading must be 0.
Nitrates are produced, as mentioned above, during the natural cycling process. While not as toxic as nitrites and ammonia, nitrates can cause your fish stress in high amounts. A partial water change will get rid of nitrates, which should be less than 20 ppm. Reef tanks should have a reading closer to 0.
pH refers to a water’s acidity or alkalinity. The pH scale is between 0 and 14. Zero is the most acidic, seven is neutral, and fourteen is alkaline. Water changes can raise or lower the pH level, as does the addition of specific chemicals to the water. The right pH level depends on the type of fish you have in your tank.
An alkalinity kit tests the stability of your water in regards to a changing pH level. Essentially, this type of test specifically looks for your aquarium’s capabilities for stabilizing the pH in the water. The reading in saltwater tanks should be between 7 and 12 dkH.
Testing the water in your aquarium is an important part of maintaining the tank and keeping your fish safe and healthy. Regular maintenance will ensure your aquarium continues to run smoothly, but you always have to double check by carrying out the required tests.

Time to Change The Way You Look at Garden Watering Systems
Of all the different types of garden watering systems there are, almost all of them are highly inefficient. From sprinklers to drip systems and flood irrigation, almost all of the water is wasted. But one water delivery system uses as little as 2% of the water and takes care of all the organic nutrients at the same time.

Water Test Kits for Aquariums

]]>

Only a small amount is used by the plants, while most of it is absorbed into the ground or evaporates. But one water delivery system uses as little as 2% of the water and takes care of all the organic nutrients at the same time.

Freshwater Aquariums – 3 Golden Rules For Beginners

When you are just starting to have fish in the home you obviously have a lot to learn to care about them properly and make sure that they survive for as long as their full life span is and not cause harm to them by wrong ways because of ignorance. There is a wide choice of fish that you can have in a fresh water tank and it should not be a problem to select some of these for your tank. So go ahead and start your aquarium with a fresh water one and get the suitable fish that you want for it. This is a much easier bet to take care of and a wise one to start your hobby with.
1. Some points to keep in mind for a fresh water aquarium
Before you get your fresh water aquarium you would have to do some planning and bear some points in your mind. The first and foremost one is to decide where you will be keeping the fresh water aquarium in your home. The aquarium should not be kept near units for heating and cooling in the house, nor near doors and windows. You should locate an area where the temperature remains more or less the same every day and there should be sufficient sunlight light and also light indoors for the fish.
After locating a suitable spot in your home for the aquarium you can get yourself a fresh water one. It is always better to start with a small one and after you get the hang of it you can go in for a bigger one. Get a proper stand for the aquarium so that you can put it on the stand and then fill it with water and everything else that goes into it. If you have a suitable table you could place the aquarium on it, but whatever you decide to use as a stand make sure that it is sturdy and can take the weight of the aquarium with the water, the fish and the accessories in it. It should also be quite firm and not sway around with the weight on it.
2. Accessories for the fresh water aquarium
The aquarium has a lot more accessories that will be required for it to function perfectly, like the system for filtering the water which should be as per the size of the aquarium, this will need suitable filters, lighting for the aquarium, gravel, plants, several species of fish, food and medicines for the fish. You could add on any other accessories to beautify the aquarium also and this is according to your own choice. Some fish may need a heater to keep the water warm also.
3. Keep fish that can live compatibly together
Another very important aspect of keeping fish together is that you have to make sure that they require the same kind of environment, water temperature and feed and do not antagonize each other, but are able to live together harmoniously.

About the AQUABLOCK Fish Tanks & Aquariums
Posted: Jun 03, 2009 |Comments: 0
|
]]>
The AQUABLOCK, a glass fish aquarium, was created based upon the desire to bring together a balance of nature, décor, and the tranquility of aquatic life. These aquariums are small in size making them ideal for any desktop or tabletop. They are also portable and easy to clean because the colorful gravel is glued down, which makes the tanks perfect as a child’s first pet. The AquaBlock fish aquariums offer a variety of options to customize and personalize each tank.
Betta fish swim easily in our desktop sized tanks. Also referred to as “Japanese Fighting Fish” or “Puddle Fish,” Betta are appealing to people because of their large flowing, colorful fins. These enchanting fins can be irresistible to other fish that may be tempted to take a nibble. So, keeping a Betta in its own tank is not mean or punishment, but can be helpful to a Betta’s survival. Betta fish belong to the group Anabantoids, or “air-breathing.” This “air breathing” feature is unique and is absent in most other fish. Their air breathing organ allows the Betta to live in low oxygenated water. They swim to the surface and actually take a breath through its mouth, which then passes air over its labyrinth organ at the base of its gills where the air is extracted enabling the fish to breath.
There have been many studies that indicate there are health benefits to having fish, or pet, in the home. Researchers at the State University of New York, Buffalo studied the outcome of pet ownership in 48 stockbrokers being treated for hypertension. 24 of the stockbrokers received a pet and the results found a significant reduction in their high blood pressure, a larger reduction than in those who did not receive a pet. “Most studies show a direct benefit from stroking a pet, for example, but this one goes a step further in that the act of owning a pet lowered blood pressure,” says Alan Entin, Ph.D., past president of the division of family psychology of the American Psychological Association. Published in the Journal for Occupational Health Psychology, one study reviewed businesses that allow pets vs. businesses that do not. The results show signs that pets actually improved the work environment, and amplified the employees’ mental health and mood.
The benefits are endless – The AquaBlock makes a great gift with multiple, custom design options in order to create the perfect glass fish tank for any child or busy office. Fresh water aquariums can be excellent for beginners and you can choose one to fit nearly any size. Contrary to what most people believe, the larger the tank is, the easier it is to keep and maintain. This is due to the fact that the larger amount of water will allow for a more natural cycle from which the fish will survive. This natural environment of bacteria and other useful chemicals can be quite tough to replicate in a very small tank. However, the main deciding factor here is usually cost and the size available for the fish tank to sit in.
Where To Buy
Before you spend a penny on your new aquarium, visit some local fish stores and speak to people who specialise in this area. ‘Pet supermarkets’ are definitely not the best place to go if you are new to fish keeping. If you do pop in to such a place for a chat, don’t believe what the Saturday boys tell you. It’s quite often the case that staff aren’t trained fully, so you’re much better going to a shop that specialises in fish keeping, or speaking to an expert in the area. Most aquarium horror stories come from people who have been ill-advised, so don’t make the same mistake before you’ve even got your tank.
How To Set Up
Aquariums full of water weigh a huge amount so it’s extremely important that you place it on something that can bear the weight. If in doubt, you should probably purchase a stand that has been specifically built with this is mind. Also worth thinking about is that many warranties could be void if you place the tank on something not specifically designed to take the weight. If you are installing an aquarium that is over 100 gallons, it might be wise to contact an engineer to make sure your floor can cope. This may sound like an extreme measure but surely it’s better than finding out half way through filling up the tank?! Filling The Tank Once you are sure you are placing the tank in a suitable place, on a suitable surface you can start to fill it up with all the bits and pieces. Before you do anything, make sure you give the tank a good clean with a damp cloth and also give the gravel/sand a good clean too. When everything’s in place, add ¾ of the water and start to install your filter system and heater. These products will always come with instructions and to avoid any breakages make sure you follow them carefully. Once you have completed these steps, and your plant life/decor is in place, slowly fill the rest of the tank with water.
Introducing Fish
Depending on many factors it’s often advised to wait around 3-4 days before any fish are introduced. At the very least make sure you wait 24 hours, if you don’t your fish are almost certain to die as the water will not have settled or become ready in any way for fish. When you bring your fish home, float them in the bag for about half an hour. Fish do suffer from shock so suddenly introducing them to your water temperature and chemistry could kill them.

The great thing about starting up a tropical freshwater aquarium is it’s the best system for beginners. Tropical aquariums are relatively cheap and the fish are usually hardy. Marine aquariums, with saltwater fish, are more expensive and you will
need a lot of knowledge and good techniques from the outset.
