A fish aquarium is designed to offer domesticated marine life with a contained environment that mimics that of their natural habitat. Having first become popular in the 1950s, fish keeping is now widely enjoyed by many as a fun hobby and as a beautiful addition to the home. When maintained properly, fish aquariums can add a decorative touch to any room.
The most effective fish aquariums are those that feature the tank itself, along with lighting, a filter and heating unit. Commonly available in various sizes to accommodate space and different types of marine life, fish aquariums vary in price according to both the size and features of the unit. Everything from the small square aquarium to a large fish tank is up for grabs if you know where to find them. Typical fish aquariums can be found in most retail stores, but larger fish tanks often require a visit to the local pet store or some bargain shopping on the internet.
Fish aquariums are very important to housing domesticated marine life in the home. Small fish bowls, which are widely available, are inexpensive but do little to recreate the natural habitat that a fish would normally have. In order to live a long and happy life, fish need circulating water and movement as they have in the wild. When in captivity, which is the case when you have a fish as a pet, they need to have filtered and regularly cleaned water. While lighting is perhaps not as important, it does provide a sense of night and day and natural light for your pet.
When using fish aquariums to house your marine life, it is important that you regularly test the water using a test kit. In addition to changing the water regularly, it is best to confirm that the water you are using is safe. Regular tap water, for instance, may feature contamination that could prove harmful to fish. The reason is because of the chemicals and purifiers that are often used to treat the water. Instead, using distilled water may be the better option to ensure that it is free of chemicals or any other harmful agents. When changing the water in fish aquariums, you should remove up to 20% of the current water and replace it with the new.
When shopping for fish aquariums, it’s a good idea to check over the unit before you purchase it for cracks or other defects. If you are shopping online, be sure to ask about shipping insurance in case your aquarium is damaged while in route to your home.

Choosing Fish For Aquariums – Choose Between Gold Fish And Piranhas!

When you have put together your aquarium, you would be all eager to get the fish to go into it. But the dilemma about choosing the fish is that there are so many varieties available that you could get confused about your choice. It is best if you take the advice of your fish shop locally. But surely their advice will not be any different than the advice that follows here. If you think this is going to blossom into a really keen hobby, then choosing small fish could be just a waste of money and time. On the other hand, if this is a passing fancy or you have your kid’s interest in mind, then most certainly you should go for small fish.
Aquarium fish which is small is usually of bright colors and feed on fish flakes more than fish meat. They could range from angel fish to tetras and are chosen for decorative purposes due to their shine which reflects a bright silver under the particular aquarium lights. The fish species are simple and no fun to watch as they have no personality. These fishes are suitable for decoration and for simple aquarium set ups and usually people wanting a tank with low maintenance go for it.
It is a bit more difficult to maintain the larger fish like African fish and cichlids. But they generally are sturdier fish so their mortality rate is very low compared to other smaller weak fish. The main attraction or rather the problem of cichlids is however their cannibalism. They will gobble up the smaller fish in the tank in no time at all. If you feed them anything less than fish meat, they will not like it. Cichlids have different types and their looks also differ. Oscars which find personal favor with many people; can be red, tiger or albino. Then there are jaguar cichlids as well as black belts, and so the list goes on. These fish types need a lot of gravel cleaning and filter since they create lots of waste. Cichlids’ breeding pair costs a lot of money! Cichlids are generally the more expensive fish as they are larger (one tank can accommodate 5-6 cichlids and one half foot Oscar). One thing to remember is that these fish prefer to arrange the tank just the way they like it. So initially though the tank caters to your taste, it won’t stay the same for long. There is so much more to know about cichlids which have a distinct personality.
So the type of fish that you should get for your aquarium depends on the purpose of your getting the aquarium. Decorative small tanks need decorative small aquarium fish. But if you have a bigger tank, you should get bigger fish. Put in some larger fish and see the fun you will have watching them!

While saltwater environments often require more work and dedication than their freshwater counterparts, they provide a substantially different appeal. The key to success, as with any pet, is planning ahead. Before you jump into purchasing and filling your saltwater tank, you will need to do extensive research regarding the types of fish you plan on keeping as well as what type of habitat you hope to have. Here are some basics which need to be addressed for a saltwater tank:
- Saltwater habitats:
Saltwater tanks can be found in three basic varieties: Fish only, Fish only with live rock, and reef setups. While fish only environments are the most economic option, there are some clear advantages to incorporating live rock into your tank-namely that they provide a natural filter to the habitat and they are more aesthetically pleasing without upgrading to a full-scale reef environment. If you have the time, money, and dedication for a reef tank setup, it will pay off in the long run. Reef habitats can house many more species and provide a more engaging tank.
Also, starting small or simply may seem like a good option, but after the setup required for any size tank you may soon wish you had started with at least a 35 gallon tank. It is also worth noting that smaller tanks require more frequent tests to maintain appropriate chemical levels in the water and are more susceptible to rapid change.
- Equipment:
Purchasing the right equipment to begin with will save money on replacing fish in the long run. Some pieces of equipment that should accompany your saltwater tank include a heater, protein skimmer, thermometer, and test kits. More complete lists can be found easily and depend on the specifics of your desired tank setup.
- Quarantine Tank:
Quarantine tanks make the transition much easier on your saltwater fish and will prevent the spread of disease to others in your aquarium. It is highly recommended that all fish, under all circumstances, be quarantined before introducing them to your tank. This is not a lengthy process, nor does it require an elaborate setup, but it is in the best interest of your fish and ultimately you wallet.
- Other Tank Accessories:
While all the above items are essential to bear in mind for the success of your saltwater tank, there are a few more things to keep in mind.
A background should be painted or taped to the back of the tank. Painting (always on the outside of the tank) is generally a better option since it won’t be damaged by spilled or leaking saltwater. Also, in addition to live rock, sand should be added to the tank. However, you should only use sand designed for aquarium use so that you know it won’t be harmful to your fish. Invertebrates, such as sea urchins, starfish, and coral also add depth and color to your saltwater tank and can contribute to the ecosystem. Lastly, aquarium plants can help keep the tank clean, attractive, and more interesting for your fish.

Various Types of Aquariums For Your Exotic Fish

Aquariums add delight and freshness to the people’s homes and businesses all around the world. Aquariums are included in restaurants specially to attract kids and customers who come and dine there, fish tanks are included in many more places like malls, hotels and houses. People have a habit of having aquarium like a kind of hobby. Since, it adds beauty to the place.
The aquarium can be designed in such a way that it can be of any shapes like rectangle, square and also spherical. The aquarium can be decorated by using small color pebbles and small plastic plants to make the environment more realistic and a nicer environment for the fish.
Aquariums make perfect gifts for family and friends, the relaxing movement of the fish and water is an ideal stress reliever from our busy lives. Some fish, such as the betta fish have been kept in very small glass bottles, however without proper filtration the fish will often not survive. Filtration should be a key consideration for anyone looking at the different types of aquariums. Most smaller aquariums (under 100L (25 US Gallons) will include a small mechanical filter. Often these filters are not sufficient for a fully stocked aquariums. Ideally, an aquarium filter system should include biological, mechanical and chemical filtration.
When choosing the aquarium, the other thing to be kept in mind is the choice of fish. Decide upfront if you want to keep goldfish, tropical fish or marine fish as this will help narrow down the choice of what fish tank to buy. Alternatively look for an aquarium which allows easy upgrading from coldwater to tropical and then ultimately marine fish.
Goldfish, cloud white mountain minnows, black molly, guppies, betta fighter fish, and tetra fish are some kind of fishes which are suitable for most aquariums and will make a fascinating and colorful display. The betta fighter fish can attack other fish, especially of the same type, so if you choose this fish make sure you keep it on its own in aquarium around 15L (4 US Gallons).
The aquarium should be taken care by changing the water regularly. Some aquariums require more frequent water changes than others. For example many aquariums require weekly water changes, however some aquariums, which have advanced filtration system can dramatically reduce the amount of maintenance needed, so it is often worth spending a little extra on a better aquarium in the long run.
Choice of fish food is extremely important; always buy a high quality food in a pellet form. Brine shrimp or frozen food are often poor in nutritional value and will not benefit the fish. Flake foods can rot in the aquarium, so an aquarium pellet fish food which has the correct protein levels and won’t rot will ensure the water quality in the aquarium remains high and will help ensure healthy fish.
There are many varieties of aquariums in all shapes and sizes. However, the most important elements to consider are, low maintenance (you don’t want to have to clean it every week) and a powerful filter which offers biological, mechanical and chemical filtration to keep the water healthy for the fish.

The Boerboel dog breed hails from South Africa and is indeed an integral part of the country’s history. From the size and shape of its head the Boerboel has very obvious Mastiff ancestry. Indeed the Boerboel dog breed was the result of many 1700 European dog breed mixes. Most of those dogs were sizable canines, having been transported by the European settlers who need reassurance in a foreign land. A salt water fish tank is an aquarium that mimics an ocean environment and houses fish, corals, plants that lives in the ocean.
Salt water fish tanks are considered more difficult to keep than freshwater tanks because salt water fish have less tolerance for fluctuations that can occur quickly within the closed environment of an aquarium.
However, it is a rewarding experience to recreate the ocean environment in your home. An aquarium helps you to destress and lower blood pressure. No wonder aquariums are a common sight in hospitals and clinics.
Before buying a fish tank, measure the space so that you buy the size that will fit into the space. The bes place to put the fish tank is in the living room where it is easily seem. Do avoid direct sunlight
Briefly, here are the steps to build a fish tank.
1. Install the aquarium equipment such as the filtration system, protein skimmer, powerheads, aquarium heater.
2. Check for any leaks in the fish tank. Tighten all host connections. Fill up the aquarium with freshwater and wipe the exterior of the tank dry. If there is no leak, shut the system and remove some water.
3. Install the substrate, sea salts and live rock. Put the plants in and anchor them to the bottoms in the substrate.
4. Fill it with water. Fill a large bucket with clean, dechlorinated water. Fill your tank with the saltwater, leaving about an inch at the top.
5. Install the Lighting.
6. Start the filter system. Maintain the temperature between 75 and 80 degrees. Let everything run for at least 72 hours.
7. When the chemical levels are all okay and the tank temperature is within suggested limits, add the fish. Start with one or two first. Add a few safe tank janitors such as snails and hermit crabs to control the waste in the aquarium.
Now that the tank is setup, let’s talk about the fish.
Nevery buy a new fish on impulse at first sight. Before you select any new addition for your aquarium, take some study to learn more about the fish such as its characteristics, compatibility with other fishes, its dietary requirements and eating habits.
Select fish that are healthy. How do you know if they are healthy? Here is a telltale sign: Sick fish don’t eat. Ask the vendor to feed the fish in your presence.
Observe their appearance. The eyes should be bright and clear.A sick fish has misty eyes or sunken eyes. The mouth should be uninjured. The skin should be smooth and well-colored without missing scales. A healthy fish should have a well rounded and slightly convex (curved out) stomach. Do not select a fish with a sunken stomach.
Observe the movement A sick fish breath shallowly and move very little.It is lethargic and remain at the bottom of the tank.
How many fish should you put in your tank?. The rule of thumb is “One inch of fish per 5 gallons of system saltwater”.
You need to acclimatize the new fish to your aquarium because a sudden chang in temperature or water quality can shock the fish to death. The most common method is the floating bag method. If you use this method, do not dump the bag water into your tank! If you do, you risk exposing your tank to any parasites or diseases that were in the shop’s tanks.
Here is a s imple way to acclimatize the new fish. Put the bag inside a clean bucket. Open the top of the bag and remove about 25% of the water from the bag. Replace this water with the same amount of water from your tank. Every 10 minutes add about 1 cup of water to the bag. Repeat this process for about an hour. After an hour has passed use a small net to get the fish out of the bag and gently place the fish into your tank.
How often do you feed the fish? The best frequency is to feed them twice a day. Do not overfeed the fish. Put enough for 2 minutes because theywill eat for about 2 minutes and then ignore the food forhours.

Biorb fish tanks don’t just come with the main aquarium itself but also with built-in filtration and lighting if you opt to use it. Whilst the standard Biorb fish tanks are designed for cold-water fish special kits are available enabling you to turn a Biorb aquarium into either a tropical freshwater aquarium or perhaps a marine tank.
But Biorb aquariums aren’t just the best way to start keeping fish they also have a number of other benefits the least of which is they are designed to be simple to put together and to maintain meaning minimal time is spent on tank maintanance each week.
But Biorb fish tanks are also designed to be works of art in their own right and a properly set up tank is incredibly attractive to look at and adds to virtually any room of the home. The very first is that even the largest tank in the range isn’t very large meaning that you’re limited by what fish it is possible to keep safely in them. However if you just want a small community tank or some clownfish then this shouldn’t be a problem and chances are it will be the more advanced fish keeper who finds the smaller size of these aquariums frustrating.
The second issue is quite simply that these aren’t the cheapest fish tanks around. Buying a traditional fish tank and all the accessories may prove considerably cheaper than buying a Biorb kit which may put off some buyers. Alternatively knowing which you have everything required in one box and that any accessory you buy from the range will fit your tank perfectly means that many people do opt to pay that little extra to save on a regular basis and hassle of working out which pieces of aquarium kit will go together.
Apart from these two minor downsides the Biorb aquarium range is an ideal way to keep fish in the home. They are probably the best way to get going keeping fish and will add interest to any room of the home.
