Aquarium Water Pumps – Essential to Aquatic Plant Success

Water circulation is essential in any aquarium, to ensure proper filtration, prevent the formation of anoxic or low-temperature regions, and deliver nutrients to stationary organisms. Power heads and aerators often provide sufficient circulation for a basic aquarium. In a planted aquarium, however, the water surface should be left undisturbed as much as possible to prevent loss of precious carbon dioxide and such devices should not be used.
Water pumps provide the necessary circulation both within the tank and through the filtration system, without unnecessary gas exchange. In a typical planted aquarium, water flows passively to the pump from a submerged intake where it is then propelled through the filter(s), and returned to the tank through an outlet below the water surface. The function of a water pump in a planted aquarium is exactly the same as that of the heart in the human body: pumping water rather than blood through a filter instead of the kidneys and liver. This analogy underscores the critical importance of the water pump in sustaining the health of a planted aquarium.
Not surprisingly, there are several types of aquarium water pumps to choose from, suitable for different types of tanks and budgets (see our selection at Julie’s Pet Market). While perhaps not a glamorous part of setting up a planted aquarium, the selection of a water pump is one of the most crucial tasks to ensure a successful experience. Several criteria should be considered.
1) Flow rate. Water pump flows are rated in gallons per hour (gph) under free-flow conditions. For example, a 100 gph pump will circulate all the water in a 50 gallon tank twice in an hour. The presence of a filter (and its condition) will reduce actual flow. It is important to pick a pump with sufficient flow to ensure proper filtration. Conversely, an excessive water flow will turn your tank into a chaotic whirlpool. Usually, the filter manufacturer will specify the minimum flow rate needed for the water pump. The selected pump should exceed the minimum flow rate, but be comparable to it
2) Durability. A water pump is one of the few devices with moving parts in an aquarium, and therefore subject to wear and tear. Some pumps (e.g. magnetic drive) are designed without internal seals that can become corroded. This is more important for saltwater tanks, but well worth considering for a planted aquarium.
3) Heat generation. The electric motor generates heat that is transmitted to the water. Too much heat may contribute to wear and tear and is undesirable when you need to keep water temperature below a certain level.
4) Power consumption. A pump operates continuously and along with lights it is one of the main contributors to the energy costs of a planted aquarium. Prefer pumps with lower energy demands to keep costs down.
5) Noise level. Unless the pump will operate fully immersed, noise from the water pump is not to be underestimated as a factor in the enjoyment of your planted aquarium. You can often find information on noise levels on the manufacturer’s web site.
In general, you should select the best quality pump you can afford. There are fewer sources of headaches in an aquarium worse than a poor pump: noise, overheating, and leakages occurring at the least convenient time can send you scrambling for a replacement. Having to replace a faulty pump – even with another poor one – after just a few months of operation makes this choice a false economy. The selection of water pumps offered at Julie’s Pet Market includes only quality products to avoid you such problems.

There are a lot of experts out there who say that cats are strictly independent animals. These very same experts state that cats have chosen to associate with humans due to their strategy of survival. Care advice from Tyne Tees Aquatic
The Emerald Mithrax Crab is respected for its scavenging ability. It will enthusiastically feed on uneaten beefy foods and many types of bother algae. Unlike plenty of other animals, Mithrax sculptus will eat bubble algae helping clean your aquarium of these algae. Its distinct, flat shiny green body and hairy legs simply identify the Emerald Mithrax Crab.
native to the reefs of the Caribbean, the Emerald Mithrax Crab is nocturnal and hides in caves and amongst rubble during the day. In the home aquarium, this member of the Majidae family needs a well-established aquarium with plenty of rockwork and hiding places. Once familiar with its surroundings, the Emerald Mithrax Crab will head out of hiding during the day to forage on algae.
Care needs to be taken to ensure a sufficient food supply is available for the Emerald Mithrax Crab. Many aquarists supplement the Emerald Mithrax Crab’s diet with dried seaweed and sliced meaty foods, such as shrimp, as well as a quality pellet fish food.
Otherwise, this opportunistic feeder may turn to corals, invertebrates, or small fish for a food source. Like other invertebrates, the Emerald Mithrax doesn’t put up with copper-based medications or changing water parameters.
High nitrates in your tank can often be traced to some key factors which are discussed below.
Instead you need to shut off all filters and pumps and add small amounts making sure the fish consume it all. Do this for two mins or until your saltwater fishes bellies appear round and full. Have the correct Fish Load- Overstocking your salt water fish tank is an assured way to have high nitrates and the issues that come with them. To avoid overstocking ensure that you begin with one smaller fish per ten gallons of tank water volume. The crabs will ultimately grow beyond the shells they are in so there should be additional shells available. Try and provide a many options of shells for the crabs to choose between. One should never attempt to force out a crab from its shell as it may lead the way on to the crab harm. Water dishes should be supplied and they have to be bog enough for the most important hermit crab to get into. What to essentially feed hermit crabs has been a subject of wide dialogue among crab owners of pets.
gently add fish 2 weeks apart and make efforts to test your nitrates during those few weeks.
When you find your nitrates have begun to rise after a new fish addition you can’t add any more and are at the stocking limit of your tank.
Also make it a habit to change your filter pads each 1 to 2 weeks to take away the fish waste and uneaten food that may begin to rot and add nitrates.
By inflating the frequency that you clean your aquarium filters and change your tanks water you may be removing the things that cause high nitrates.

Ways To Set Up An Artificial Aquatic Ecosystem

Ways To Set Up An Artificial Aquatic Ecosystem
Keeping an aquarium can be a fun filled experience that most people can do. Hobbyists especially love fish and having a lot of good times with their fish. It makes you feel relaxed especially when you see fishes swim freely in their tank. Fish like other pets also has names you can fondly called for. A number of people find it amusing to keep an aquarium but it should be taken with extra car and caution. There are a lot of things to consider setting up an artificial aquatic ecosystem. Here are some guidelines to follow and important fresh water aquarium information to help you get started.
Aquarium Size
Size matters in all aquariums set up. Beginners are strongly advised to start with bigger aquariums for better and easier maintenance. There are a number of factors to consider about aquarium water set up to make fishes live longer. Small aquariums tend to spread changes in water chemistry too quickly primarily because of small area coverage thus errors are easily noticeable. Bigger aquariums are more preferred because of wider space making water chemistry changes left unnoticed that’s why beginners can readily observe and learn from these factors.
Tank Size Proportion to Fish Population
Pay close attention to ample space of your aquarium so that fishes can move adequately. Don’t contain them in a tight small sardine like space that would make them difficult to survive. This is really an important thing to consider if you are planning to put up an aquarium, it is suggested that you should allocate 50% more space to the number of fishes you are planning to raise. Otherwise you reduce your planned number of fish if you an intended small space for your aquarium.
Water Chemistry Awareness
Determine different levels of water impurities namely ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and PH levels as these are considered vital freshwater aquarium information. Ammonia though considered as toxic substance is necessary during the start up stage of building up your aquarium but if not controlled it may kill your whole fish population so this must be taken cared of. Nitrites is less toxic than ammonia but must be controlled also to avoid contamination. Nitrates should be keep in moderation as well though it’s a by product of algae and are less likely toxic substance than ammonia and nitrites. Water Ph or Potentiality to Hydrogen refers to the acidity and alkalinity of your water and are mostly controlled by applying appropriate substance to your fish tank. Ph levels can best managed by way of controlling the substances inside the water though they can be readily treated effectively through a filtration system.
Consistent Maintenance Intervals
Maintaining cleanliness in your aquarium can be so challenging and tiring yet very important thing to do. Filters need to be changed and cleaned ideally 2 to 3 times a week or else your tank will be in big mess. Put your fish first in a cleaned hospital tank before changing water. Water should be changed at regular intervals as well. Soak substrates such as decorative corals in a tub filled with hot water mixed with salt for a few hours and scrub then with sponge for cleaning dirty articles instead of using soap. If you want to change or add substrates for decorations it must be tested first for water Ph level changes.
The is much joy and fulfillment of putting an aquarium yourself either in your home, businesses or casual meeting places because this is the second most popular hobby in the world next to stamp collection. But to make your aquarium survive for a long time the guidelines cited above could greatly help you in the process of taking care and maintaining a fresh water aquarium.

Freshwater Aquarium Information: Setting up an Artificial Aquatic Ecosystem
Aquariums are good stress-relieving alternative; they give that soothing ambience when you gaze at the fish that swim about in the fish tank. Hobbyists often have a good time with their fish. Like with other domestic pets such as cats and dogs, fish are even given names by their owners. Keeping an aquarium at home is such a wonderful hobby that anyone at any age can enjoy it, and we’re going to give you a few tips and some helpful freshwater aquarium information to help you get started.
Big Aquariums = Easy Maintenance
Small aquariums should never be used by beginners. There are a lot of factors to consider when maintaining the water in your aquarium suitable for life, and small aquariums tend to spread the changes in the water chemistry far too quickly because of the small volume that they have to cover, leaving a very small room for errors. Thus, keeping small aquariums is absolutely not recommended for beginners. Big aquariums, however, tend to extend the changes in water chemistry over a large volume of water, so these changes are actually “diluted”, making it easier for the beginner to observe and maintain these water chemistry factors.
Make Fish Population proportional to Tank Size
Don’t try to sardine-pack the fishes on a small space. If you can’t help having a large number of fish in an aquarium, then try to purchase an aquarium that can surpass the overall “fish mass” of about 50% when the net water volume is measured. Otherwise, reduce the number of fish that you plan to raise. This is very crucial, because you don’t want to end up having to lose all of your fish in one day, just because you didn’t pay enough attention to the space that the fish need.
Learn About Your Aquarium’s Water Chemistry
This is considered as the vital freshwater aquarium information: monitoring the different levels of impurities or composition of the water. There are four general levels that you have to observe when maintaining your fish tank, and these are the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and the water’s pH levels.
Ammonia is beneficial ONLY during the startup cycle. In different circumstances it is quite toxic, and at uncontrolled levels it can instantly kill your fish. Nitrites are also quite toxic, and should be kept as low as possible to support marine life. Nitrates are a lot less toxic than the other two, and are in fact the by product of algae breaking down the two previous substances, but you can’t keep too much of them in your tank either. Water pH levels refer to the acidity and alkalinity of water, and are mostly controlled by applying the appropriate substrate to your fish tank. Most of the times, pH levels are controlled by your filtration system, although they are best managed by controlling the substances in the water that cause them to rise or fall.
Do a Full Maintenance of your Aquarium at Regular Intervals
This is perhaps the most challenging, if not the most tedious, thing to do when setting up your fish tank. Filters need to be changed once in a while (around 2-3 weeks at best), and if you don’t do this, your fish tank is in big trouble. Also, you need to change the water of the tank periodically. Don’t forget to put your fish into hospital tanks before doing this. NEVER EVER use soap when cleaning the articles that you put on the substrate (such as decorative corals, etc.). Instead, soak them in a tub filled with hot water mixed with salt for a few hours, and scrub them with a clean sponge. If you need to change substrates, then you have to test them again for water pH level changes.

Freshwater Aquarium Maintenance – Keeping the Aquatic Home Clean

Freshwater Aquarium Maintenance – Keeping the Aquatic Home Clean
A good aquarium is always clean. Well, not sparkling clean, but clean enough for fish to stay healthy and for you to appreciate the good, clean look of an aquarium. A fish tank gets dirty over time, for many reasons such as accumulated waste materials, algae, and other materials such as leftover food, etc. Although freshwater aquarium maintenance is quite tedious and has some very delicate procedures, getting used to them can ensure that your aquarium can stay hygienic, and remain good health promoting and aesthetically pleasing to the eye for a long time.
Remove the old water
The first thing that you have to do is to remove the old water from the tank. Separate the fish from the main tank in a hospital tank for a while. If you have aquatic plants in your fish tank then you must include them in the hospital tank, and remove all other objects inside the aquarium for individual cleaning.
Scrub away excess dirt and algae
This can take a long time, depending on how well it was cleaned last time. But primarily, you’ll have to remove the dirt that was left after removing everything else in the aquarium. If you are using acrylic tanks, it’s better to use a soft sponge when removing the algae, so as not to scratch the aquarium (otherwise, you’ll have to use those algae pads).
Replace or clean the filter media of your filter
For cleanliness purposes, it’s actually better to replace the filters than to just clean them, although cleaning the filters one or two times before replacing can save you a lot more money in the long run. Remember, just clean once, twice or thrice, and then replace the filter. This will maximize both cost and effectiveness. And oh, don’t use any kind of soap or detergent while cleaning the filter.
Clean the other articles of the aquarium
Decorations such as small corals and shells should be soaked in warm water mixed with a good amount of salt. After soaking for a few minutes, scrub away using a sponge to clean the excess dirt off. Remember, NEVER use soap or any kind of detergent. It’s often difficult to rid an object of its soap content after washing it in 100%, and even just tiny bits of soap can be lethal for your fish.
Replace the water
After cleaning all of the other articles, including the tank itself, then it’s time to replace the water. If your home tap water is already tested for its pH level, then you can start to fill the aquarium again with water. Regulate the toxicity levels for a bit, and afterwards, transfer the fishes and aquatic plants back into the main tank. Your aquarium is now ready again for the next weeks to come!
One last note to those clean freaks out there: while it might be good that you clean the aquarium regularly, it is not good to clean it very often. Constantly transferring the fish from one container to another can stress them, so you have to regulate the frequency of those freshwater aquarium maintenance schedules, just enough to keep them safe and healthy.

Freshwater Aquarium Filters to Keep Your Aquatic Neighborhood Clean

Freshwater Aquarium Filters to Keep Your Aquatic Neighborhood Clean
Aquariums, just like any other part of the environment, need to be kept considerably clean, for aquatic life to keep thriving in them. Many people dislike the idea of having to manually clean the inside of a freshwater aquarium every now and then, so manufacturers have provided them with freshwater aquarium filters that can be installed to do the initial cleaning of the fish tank for them.
How is the water in a fish tank filtered?
An aquarium produces waste materials for a number of reasons. One reason is the biological reactions that take place in the water; these could simply take form of uneaten food that was left to spoil, or by waste materials of the fish themselves. But whatever these waste sources are, there are usually three general ways to remove and clean off these waste materials out of your fish tank.
When we speak of the natural processes involved in filtering the water inside a fish tank, we talk about biological filtration. Beneficial bacteria is the most common and effective agent of this filtering process, being able to break down dangerous toxic materials into less toxic substances.
Synthetic materials that are used to combine with waste materials are the work of a chemical filtration process. These waste materials react with the synthetic material, dissolving it and transforming it into a form that can be collected and thrown afterwards. One good material used for chemical filtration is activated carbon.
Manually trapping solid waste materials in a filter media is a form of mechanical filtration. Although this method does not involve dissolving substances or breaking down materials, it is an effective means of filtering out solid waste out of the fish tank. One thing though… collected material from the filter must be periodically removed by hand, so that it can continue to clean the water continuously.
What are the filters available out there then?
Fresh water aquarium filters are commonly purchased at your local hobby stores, and there are quite a number of these filters that can provide you with one or more of the filtering processes explained above. Take a look at some of the filters used in aquariums.
Power filters are the most common filters used in fish tanks, mostly because they’re affordable, are readily available, and quite efficient. They’re quite easy to install and use, and maintenance is relatively simple too. This is one of the filters that can actually use all three filtration methods, depending on how you customize the power filter’s settings.
Canister filters are among the most powerful filters that you can use. This is because they force the water through the filter media, not just letting it flow through, making the filtration process far more effective in terms of filtration amount per time interval. One disadvantage, though, is that power filters are somewhat difficult to maintain.
Corner filters were the forerunners of the modern filters that are used today. Their basic function is to pass the water through it, and with a proper filter media installed inside, filter the water appropriately. They are very cheap, and are commonly used for hospital tanks. The advent of more effective ways of filtering made the corner filter a lot less popular than what it was before.
Sponge filters, as the name suggests, make use of a sponge for beneficial bacteria to colonize into, setting the filter for biological filtration. They can also, however, filter larger solid particles using the very same sponge. Other versions of the sponge filter include the use of two sponges at the same time, for convenience purposes.
