When you are just starting to have fish in the home you obviously have a lot to learn to care about them properly and make sure that they survive for as long as their full life span is and not cause harm to them by wrong ways because of ignorance. There is a wide choice of fish that you can have in a fresh water tank and it should not be a problem to select some of these for your tank. So go ahead and start your aquarium with a fresh water one and get the suitable fish that you want for it. This is a much easier bet to take care of and a wise one to start your hobby with.

1. Some points to keep in mind for a fresh water aquarium
Before you get your fresh water aquarium you would have to do some planning and bear some points in your mind. The first and foremost one is to decide where you will be keeping the fresh water aquarium in your home. The aquarium should not be kept near units for heating and cooling in the house, nor near doors and windows. You should locate an area where the temperature remains more or less the same every day and there should be sufficient sunlight light and also light indoors for the fish.

After locating a suitable spot in your home for the aquarium you can get yourself a fresh water one. It is always better to start with a small one and after you get the hang of it you can go in for a bigger one. Get a proper stand for the aquarium so that you can put it on the stand and then fill it with water and everything else that goes into it. If you have a suitable table you could place the aquarium on it, but whatever you decide to use as a stand make sure that it is sturdy and can take the weight of the aquarium with the water, the fish and the accessories in it. It should also be quite firm and not sway around with the weight on it.

2. Accessories for the fresh water aquarium
The aquarium has a lot more accessories that will be required for it to function perfectly, like the system for filtering the water which should be as per the size of the aquarium, this will need suitable filters, lighting for the aquarium, gravel, plants, several species of fish, food and medicines for the fish. You could add on any other accessories to beautify the aquarium also and this is according to your own choice. Some fish may need a heater to keep the water warm also.

3. Keep fish that can live compatibly together
Another very important aspect of keeping fish together is that you have to make sure that they require the same kind of environment, water temperature and feed and do not antagonize each other, but are able to live together harmoniously.

Everyone wants to make their room look beautiful. For that you can place one tropical fish tank in your room. It will be the focal point and all your guests will appreciate your taste. Many people feel that the setup of the fish tank is tough but that is not true. In the following article we are going to discuss a few simple steps to maintain a tropical fish tank in your room. This is an interesting thing and you surely will enjoy doing it.

When you are planning to buy an aquarium you must check the lighting in it. You can opt for smaller or bigger tank according to the size of the room. If the aquarium is bigger then it will be easy for you to maintain. However the equipments are a bit costly in case of bigger aquarium. To maintain an aquarium properly you need an aquarium of 12 inch width and height both. This is an ideal size that will fit into a smaller and bigger room both. Here you will get the space to keep multiple types of fishes. You need to buy aquarium with good quality filter to maintain is properly. You need sand, thermometer and heater so that you can maintain the temperature of the water. You also need to main the lights and temperature properly. For a 12 inch aquarium 150 watts are perfect. Light depends on the size of your aquarium and you need to be careful about it. If there is more or lesser light that required then the fishes will suffer badly. You definitely do not want that. You need to keep the light on for 8-9 hours a day. If you keep it on for more than that the water will get warmer and uncomfortable for the fishes.

It is very important to clean the aquarium frequently. However you need to be careful while washing it. Detergent cannot be used as it can harm the fishes and can even kill them. You need to use warm water and sponge. Other than that any thing can harm the fishes. You need to take care of them first. There needs to be a plug socket near the aquarium. You also need to place it far from any heat sources. Then you need to place the sand carefully at the bottom. After that the aquarium heater needs to be placed inside carefully. After that you need to pour water in it and then it is time on switch on the heater. This is important to keep that water temperature perfect for the fishes. Neon tetras, tiger barbs are fishes that you can easily keep. You can also keep gruppies. They look beautiful and lively inside the aquarium. You need not add more than 2-3 fishes at a time. If you put too many fishes at once then it can cause a trauma for them. It is important to keep the fishes happy. It will feel lovely to see these colorful creatures swimming freely inside the aquarium. Your room will get a lovely focal point for sure.

If you own fish and aquariums, you should have already researched to know how to take care of your fish and aquarium. If you have not, then it is important that you research, asked questions, read materials, etc, which will help you provide proper care to your fish and tank.

If you plan to purchase non-marine and marine fish combined, you will need to consider a variety of details. The one thing you want to avoid is inserting aggressive and non-aggressive fish into the same tank. Unless you want to lose money, this is the best recommendation anyone can offer you. Damsels are aggressive fish, which the fish are typically starter fish. Fish owners tend to start with damsels, since the fish are inexpensive and require less maintenance and attention. It is recommended that you only put two of the same or similar fish in a single aquarium.

In addition to fish, you will need to purchase with your aquarium test kits, buffers, filters, gravel, floss, and so on. It is important to keep fish water fresh. If you have, saltwater fish you will need to add salt every two weeks. In addition, you can purchase fish that will adapt well to saltwater, especially if you have primarily saltwater fish in your tank.

      How to maintain freshwater fish?

Common freshwater fish will adapt to nearly any type of tank. Saltwater fish tend to do well in reef tanks. Since freshwater fish will adapt to a variety of tanks, it is easier to take care of the fish. In fact, freshwater fish is recommended for beginners. In the category of freshwater fish are the tropical fish and the Coldwater fish. To help you get started we can consider aquariums.

      Considering aquariums

The first thing you want to consider is the area you will place the aquarium. You want to make sure you have sufficient space at your home to spot the tank. You should never put fish aquariums near open Windows, or windows in general. The sunlight will cause photosynthetic organisms (Algae) to grow quicker. You will need to avoid spotting the tank near heaters, or doorways. It is important that you maintain room temperature when caring for fish. You can purchase dehumidifiers and humidifiers, which can help you, maintain room temperature. In addition, when you purchase your aquarium, make sure that you consider filters, floss, gravel, medicines, food, water, etc. You want to make sure that your plug sockets can handle the level of electricity required of fish aquariums.

      How to choose filters?

Filters are categorized as chemical, biological, and mechanical. You can purchase external, internal, and under-gravel filtration systems to support your fish aquarium. If you are just starting out in fish care and aquarium care, avoid the under-gravel filters since it will require excessive maintenance, as well as the filters do not produce quality power. However, you can use under-gravel filters in conjunction with mechanical, biological, or chemical filters. It is recommended to learn the actions performed by each filtering system before joining under-gravel filters with another filtration system.

One of the most popular filters utilized is the internal filters. The internal filters include foam cartridge(s) and a diminutive box. The filters work to draw liquid from grills. The liquids are then filtered by the foam cartridge, which exits through the nozzles found at the top of the filters. Beginners could benefit from using the internal filters, since indicators will alert you when to clean or replace the filters. Valves work to produce oxygen, which adds to the advantages of using internal filters. The internal filters also have filtering pads, which remove chemicals while using polyester and/or carbon pads. The strong synthetic fabrics produce low moisture, which absorbs the chemicals. The filters are hardwearing, which means you will not have to replace the filters as often. You will need proper filtration for all fishes, including Tetra.

Aquarium owners once accustomed will hope to one day have many different kind of coral in their own saltwater tank – this is an absolute dream! Starter kits can be purchased where you can take easy steps into growing your own piece of coral. This is a much better way to start and is highly recommended against buying coral from a shop. Growing your own coral ensures that it is acclimatised to your tank. Before starting to set up and care for a coral aquarium, knowledge in this area is required as it is not an easy process. It takes time which is worthwhile in being able to showcase your own grown coral aquarium to its best. For some people, buying fake coral is the easier option, when all it takes is patience of about up to 12 weeks, to create your own piece of paradise underwater. A wonderful sense of achievement and a worthwhile project.

Firstly, you need to start off by assembling your aquarium. Find an ideal area of your home to display the aquarium. Read the instructions carefully on how to set it up as in a freshwater tank. Before you add the water, there are a few simple rules to follow. The bottom of the tank is where you pour the sand first, then followed by the addition of dechlorinated water. Salt needs to be mixed in next, until it reaches a specific gravity measuring 1.205. Decide where you want to arrange your live rock after the water and salt, then install the heater and finally, the hood of the tank. You should then wait approximately 4 weeks for the tank to settle before going ahead with the next move.

Once the 4 weeks is over, it is time to add the first living creatures to your tank. This will ensure that the water is tested for the correct salt balance and stays that way, before you add your fish. During this period, snails and crabs if you have chosen them, can be added. The tank should now be functioning as though you have already filled it with fish, so install a protein skimmer. Check to see that you have the correct lighting and that the filters are doing their job. The light should not be left on for any longer than 10 or 12 hours a day, as this can promote the growth of algae. Once snails or crabs have been added, you should wait 2 more weeks.

You have now reached Week 6, which is when you can proceed with the next stage of adding your first pieces of coral. For saltwater aquariums you will find different types of coral including the common ones like Bullseye Mushroom coral, Button Polyp, Hairy Mushroom Coral and the Yellow Polyp. The coral should be attached to live rock at the bottom of the tank when you add it. You can wait another 2 weeks – all the patience is worth it. It is now the 10th week when you can add Aquacultured Coral with types named Pumping Xenia, Spaghetti Finger Leather Coral and Starburst Polyps as part of your collection of many. Again these should be placed on live rock as with the first set of coral.

Your reef aquarium has now been successfully set up and by the 10 to 12 week period, you will be ready to begin adding your choice of fish to your created underwater world. The process of setting up your coral aquarium is a long and drawn out, but one well worth if for the long years ahead. Your own spectacularly created coral aquarium will give you years of enjoyment as you care for it and your living creatures. The aquarium will be something to be admired and very relaxing in your home. Watch how your family and friends are impressed by your creation!

      Aquarium Care Guide- New Tanks

When starting a new aquarium it is important to understand the nitrogen cycle. Many new aquarium owners jump into the hobby of fish keeping too quickly. Before purchasing fish, the aquarium must be cycled. This could take anywhere from twenty four hours to four weeks. In an established aquarium there are certain bacteria that help the breakdown of ammonia to nitrates, but they are not present in a new tank

Salt Water Fish Tank Setup For Beginners

Salt Water Fish Tank Setup For Beginners

Saltwater fish tanks have their own unique qualities and demands. But, for the reef aquarium lover, it’s well worth the effort.

You’ll get many hours of enjoyment without hassle if you get your salt water fish tank setup correctly. If you miss a few steps, you’re sure to have problems. They may not show up right way, but your fish will suffer in the long run. So please, be patient and follow all the steps in order.

      Before You Begin

Do your research before starting your salt water fish tank setup. If you haven’t yet purchased your system, you find many choices available. Don’t hesitate to research and ask questions as you’re making your choices. Each set requires different parts and equipment, but most specialized aquarium stores are more than happy to help you get started.

What basic equipment do you need? You’ll need filters, pumps, heaters, lights, test kits, and sea salt mixtures, and substrate material (maybe something like coral). There’s other optional equipment, but these are the basics.

Once you’ve chosen your system, you’re ready to begin the setup. First you’ll need to clean and level the tank. Then you can begin to arrange your background making sure to leave room for the necessary system pieces that must go into the tank.

Starting the Saltwater Fish Tank Setup and Testing

Once your tank is set, level, and the background is installed, you’re ready to test your new system. Follow directions for your specific saltwater tank precisely. This may take some time, but it’s worth it. Test your system before you put it into your tank. Once that’s done, you can go on to the next step of your salt water fish tank setup.

If you have not already put in your saltwater solution now is a good time to do this. Once your solution is in, turn your tank on, and let it run for around 24 hours. During this test run, you can make changes to the water, if necessary. Just make sure everything is working correctly with no leaks.

      Saltwater Aquascaping

Turn off any equipment that may be running. Put aside equipment that may get in the way. You have to siphon out half the water in the tank and save it. After removing some water, arrange your rocks and decorations how you want them. Once you like your design, add the water back into your tank to the proper level.

Next, turn on the system and let it run. Let your tank cycle. After the cycling is complete – and never before – you can add your fish. Make sure to do routine tests and add water as needed.

      Second Tank

After you have your first salt water fish tank setup, why you should look into another tank? Well, one thing that is important when adding a lot of different saltwater fish is to have a quarantine tank to observe each fish before they are put in with others.

It’s important to keep you new fish alone for a while to make sure they’re not carrying any diseases. The last thing you want to do is put a new fish who’s unhealthy in with your thriving fish. Once introduced to the tank, disease spread quickly. It’s better to be safe than to lose all your saltwater fish.

Starting a Saltwater Aquarium – For Beginners

Starting a Saltwater Aquarium – For Beginners

      STEP ONE, THE AQUARIUM ITSELF

Most of my customers purchase aquariums that are way too small and end up upgrading in the near future anyway.  The minimum size for a saltwater aquarium should be at least 55 gallons.  Not only will you be able to keep most fish and corals in this tank, your parameters (salinity, ph, etc) will tend not to fluctuate as much in a larger tank.

Purchase your aquarium and a suitable stand.  I recommend getting one at your local aquarium store that is designed for the aquarium.  Don’t forget, a 55 gallon aquarium weighs over 550lbs without any rock or sand in it so don’t put it on an old table.  Now that you have your tank and stand place it on a level surface in your home away from any windows where direct sunlight can influence the temperature.  Ensure the tank is sitting level on the stand.  This is especially crucial with larger tanks as you don’t want any pressure points that can split your tanks seams.

STEP TWO, ROCK, SAND AND LIGHTING

Purchase a quality reef sand such as Carib Sea Ocean Direct Live Sand and ensure there is at least 2-3 inches of substrate at the bottom of your tank.  This will help remove nitrates in the near future.  We will get into nitrates later on but for now just make sure you purchase enough sand.  As far as lighting there are a variety of options out there.  T5 High Outputs are a good option to keep your electric bill reasonable.  You should do a little research to find out what you will suite your needs.  You will need about 2-3 20 lb bags for every 50 Gallons to achieve this.  Now for the rock, you can use what is called live rock or you can use dry reef rock that is readily available online.  What many aquarists don’t know is you do not need to use live rock to start.  You can purchase dry reef rock for about .75 – per lb versus paying about -15 per pound for live rock.  They will both give you the same end result and dry rock gains about 10-30% more weight once it’s wet so it’s a better value.  Purchase about one lb for every gallon of water you have so for a 55 Gallon aquarium purchase 50-55 lbs of rock.  Position your rocks securely as desired and proceed to the next step, the water.

STEP THREE, WATER, POWERHEADS AND HEATERS

Now you need to purchase salt (I recommend Instant Ocean for its consistency), Powerheads (Koralia or Aquarium Systems Maxi Jets are a good choice).  The flow you require is a simple formula; at least 10 x the size of you’re aquarium so for example a 55 Gallon Aquarium needs at least 550 GPH (gallons per hour) of flow.  Now you need to purchase a heater, both Jager and Visi Therm are a decent choice.  They recommend what size is required (in watts) on their packaging and websites.  Purchase a large enough heater because temperature consistency is important for your livestock.  Last but not least purchase a Refractometer for around 50 dollars online.  Measuring salinity with a plastic hydrometer is just not accurate and will cause you grief.

Ok, now that you have purchased your powerheads, heater and salt it’s time to fill up the tank with water.  One of the most commonly overlooked items is the water itself.  Take it from my experience; use Reverse Osmosis Water with a TDS (total dissolved solids) close as possible to zero.  To start you can purchase this at any water store in 5 gallon jugs or you can purchase a reverse osmosis system for under 0.  If you are serious about keeping saltwater aquariums you need this to help reduce\eliminate various algae’s and bacteria’s that can bloom in your tank and kill all of your corals.  This is the reason that most hobbyists throw in the towel.  I could go into more detail about this but just Google red slime or hair algae and do a little reading.  Install your powerheads and heater and start filling up your aquarium.  Once it is full add your salt.  It is usually about ¼ cup per gallon but check the manufactures recommendation.  Get your salinity up to about 1.024 or 1.025.

      STEP FOUR, THE WAITING GAME

At this point your tank is cycling.  You are waiting for little bacteria that you cannot see to magically appear out of nowhere and start consuming the ammonia.  This can take anywhere from 3-6 weeks and your light is not required.  A trick I have learned is to add a 5-10lb piece of Live Rock to speed up the cycle.  This will introduce some bacteria and life to your tank.   In a nutshell what happens is the bacteria eat the ammonia and produce nitrites (another type of ammonia), yet another bacteria turns the nitrites into nitrates which are pretty much left in your tank to accumulate.  Skimming and water changes will keep nitrates under control.  You can start skimming any time now.  It’s not critical at this point but it’s a good time to fire up your skimmer.  I have always used Coralife Super Skimmers.  They are easy to setup and maintain and do a great job of removing organic waste.  They also give you an option to setup in a sump (another article, another time) or hang on the back of your tank.  They are not pretty but the rock work can hide most of it.  All you have to do now is add top off water to make up for the water that has evaporated.  Do not add saltwater to make up for the missing water or your salinity will rise.  Salt does not evaporate into the air.  That is why we top off with fresh water.  When your ammonia test shows zero you will need to do a 20 percent water change and check it again in a day or so.  If it tests zero you can start by adding a fish.  Take it very slow at this point or your tank will re-cycle killing everything.  Add about one fish or coral once a week and take it slow.  We did not test for nitrites or nitrates because they really don’t matter at this point.

      STEP 5, MAINTAINING YOUR TANK

So your tank is setup and you have a couple of fish and a coral or two.  At this point you should be doing at least a 5 percent water change every week to keep the nitrates down and nuisance algae at bay.  It will also replenish the calcium, magnesium and trace elements that your corals need to survive.  Purchase a good magnet cleaner to scrub the front of your glass.  If you do end up getting some algae run some GFO (granular ferric oxide) in a media bag in a filter to remove the phosphates from your water.  This will keep it from spreading and in combination with manual removal you can keep it under control.
