1. Biorb Baby
A smaller version of the popular biOrb 30, the Baby biOrb holds just 15 litres, so it’s of similar proportions to the average larger goldfish bowl. However, unlike the bowl, the Baby biOrb has a proper biological filter to keep the water healthy and runs from a 12 volt power supply. It’s too small for goldfish and is only recommended for tiny fish species or shrimps.
2. Dennerle Nano Cube
The Dennerle Nano Cube was one of the first cube-shaped glass nano tanks on the UK market and it’s a lovely little aquarium. These fish tanks come in three sizes – 10 litre, 15 litre and 30 litre and include a specialist planting substrate, filtration and lighting. Prices start at around £50. Again, these are only suitable for tiny fish and shrimp, so you do need to take extra care when choosing the livestock.
3. Dymax IQ3 nano
The Dymax IQ3 nano tank is one of the latest aquariums in this sector of the aquarium market. It’s a more modern design and features a capacious filter which is concealed in a chamber to the rear, as well as a stylish LED light – rather than the usual fluorescent. The Dymax IQ3 is also made from acrylic rather than glass and looks much more sophisticated as a result. Since it has a total volume of just 8 litres, Swell UK does not recommend the Dymax IQ3 for larger species of fish. However, it does make a really great planted aquarium and you could keep smaller fish like a few tetras, small freshwater shrimp, such as Cherry shrimp or Crystal red shrimp, in here if you add a small heater (or have a very warm home).
4. TMC Micro Habitat
TMC’s new Micro Habitat nano tank is remarkably similar to Dymax’s IQ3, but features a number of interesting additions. For a start, it’s available in two sizes – an 8 litre version, which is broadly similar to the IQ3, and a larger MicroHabitat 15. This one is unique in that it’s aimed at marine fishkeeping and includes a bigger tile LED and a protein skimmer. Again, it goes without saying that you need to be ultra cautious in stocking such fish tanks, but you could set up a great one with light stocking and a few inverts. The TMC MicroHabitat 15 retails for £129.99 in the UK, but you can pick them up for a lot less at www.swelluk.com.

Purchasing Saltwater Aquarium – 10 Tips To Buy The Best One

1.) Remember, there is no dearth of variety when it comes to the kind of aquariums you can buy for keeping saltwater residents in them; there are only two main consideration iyou should consider – your budget and the time and effort you can spare to learn about the potential inhabitants of your marin tank and whether you are up to seeing to their regular upkeep.
2) There is a wide variety of the types, construction material, size and ornamentation available for saltwater aquariums that really end up making consumers feel number of choices available and the belief that there is no sure-shot formula for success when it comes to building a saltwater aquarium, it can be very difficult for fish tank enthusiasts to decide which type of fish tank they should buy. There are many factors to be considered before anyone with any plans of setting up a fish tank should consider before ever setting foot inside a pet store.
3) The next consideration is hte size of the tank. If you are a beginer you should opt for a small size aquarium and set your skills on mantaining the tank and the inhabitants. You will get a fairly good idea within a couple of months, on how many fish a particular size aquarium will hold and how to go about taking care of it.
4). Choose the fish for your aquarium wisely. If you are going to keep even the smallest variety of saltwater carnivore fish in the tank you should ensure that they have plenty of space to swim around. If the tank is crowded and small the small variety of shark will get aggressive and damage the other show fish in the tank.
5). Choose the material the tank is made of wisely. Aquariums are made of two materials, glass and acrylic. Glas is the better choice as it does not scratch easily, though care must be taken to prevent cracking. While cleaning the aquarium acrylic is very easily scratched and in no time at all you will feel the need to replace it, An expensive proposition.
6). Never keep more than 10 fish in a 2 cubic foot tank. If you want to keep more fish you should purchase a larger tank.
7). The foliage in the tank should be natural. Do not go for the artificial aquarium plants as the natural plants serve as breeding grounds for bacteria the fish feed on as well as help clean the aquarium water.
8). Ensure that the tank comes with a aerator and water filter. There are many electric accessories that are easily available to choose from.
9). Gravel is an important part of an aquarium. It not only helps the water filter keep the water clean byt it also adds to the beauty of the tank.
10). Lighting should be adequate and not too strong. A small floricent tube will sufice.
Ensure that your tank has all these accessories before you begin to put fish into it. Your aquarium will not be complete if any of these items are missing.

Keeping Your Aquarium Clean – Best Ways To Do It

Caring for your aquarium is very important if you plan to have one in your home. For proper maintenance it has to be cleaned at regular intervals. When cleaning fish tanks special care should be given as it is possible that your fish tank can get damaged while cleaning. This could lead to the death of the fishes in the tank.
One of the most importatn things to be done when it comes to aquarium cleaning and maintatinence, is that every single week you msut have the filter in the filtering system in your aquarium cleaned thoroughly. You can either have the existing filter cleaned or replace it with a new one. Sometimes lots of things which get stuck in it could prevent the its proper functioning. Make sure that gravel pieces, or plants which are stuck in the filter are removed when you have it cleaned.
Fragments of algae or rubbish should not be allowed to accumulate inside the tank. Sometimes you will find that on the inner sides of the aquarium walls or the filtering system there are algae growing. The moment you spot this have them removed as they will contaminate the water by making it stale and cause the fish to die. Algal bloom also reduces the efficiency of your oxygen pump, and they take in majority of the oxygen for themselves, thus suffocating the fish, and killing them in the process.
Keep the fishes in a safe place while you have the aquarium cleaned. An ideal way of doing this would be is to place some of the water that is already in the tank in another container and then putting the fish inside it. The required air for the fishes is to be provided till the cleaning of the tank is completed. This will ensure their safety and make sure they don’t die!
Have everything in the aquarium cleaned thoroughly like boiling the gravel or stone pieces. This prevents your fish tank or aquarium by being hit by any sort of micro orgasmic disease or infection of your fish, which may be pretty expensive!! Also clean all the artificial plants kept in the tank with hot water. Cleaning with hot water will ensure that all the rubbish has been removed. Make sure not to use any form of cleaning agents like soaps or detergents, which can contain harmful chemicals. Harmful chemicals will disturb the fish and hit them very hard. It affects their behavior and may even kill them in a few minutes. When your fish die and swim backwards following which they float on one side, then it means the chemicals in some component of your cleaning agent has affected them as this is how fish react to a heavy presence of soap and detergents. Don’t even dare to use over the counter cleansing agents and chemicals- you might just destroy your lovely aquariums inhabitants in the process.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – The Best Way To Reduce Nitrate In A Fish Tank
High levels of nitrate commonly occur in existing fish tanks that have not undergone regular maintenance and routine water changes. It is very important to find a solution to reduce these nitrate levels because they will eventually be deadly to the fish as well as cause an algae bloom.
The first effect of high nitrate levels can be seen in the plant life. Even though plants consume nitrate, if the levels are too high there would be too much for them to make use of and it will kill off the plants. As these plants decay, they will rot and release more nitrate into the tank water.
Then it will begin to affect the fish. The higher the level of nitrate in the tank water the less oxygen there will be. The lesser the oxygen levels, the harder the fish would have to struggle just to catch a breath of air and they will soon die.
Reduce Nitrate Naturally
You don’t have to spend your hard earned money on expensive equipment or chemicals in order to reduce the level of nitrate in your aquarium. To reduce nitrate and keep them at a healthy balance here are some things that you can do:
Change the water each week. Every week without fail, discard 20% of the tank water and replace it with new water. By changing water on a regular basis, you will ensure that the nitrate levels are always low and also discard fish waste which is the major source of nitrate in an aquarium.
Do nitrate level tests. You can purchase cheap nitrate strips from your local fish shop. Test the water before pouring it into the fish tank. You never know if your water source is high in nitrates.
Add in a coral reef or two into a salt water aquarium. These are ideal in keeping a balance on the level of nitrate.
Don’t overstock your fish tank. Too much fish poop will shoot the nitrate levels to the ceiling.
Keep the tank clean. Remove all dead or withered leaves and plants immediately before they have a chance to rot.
Products That Reduce Nitrate In Fish Tank Water
If you really want to purchase equipment to reduce your nitrate levels, here are some choices for you.
Nitrate Absorbing Filter Media. These such as Purigen which you could purchase from That Fish Place are synthetic absorbents that controls ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates by removing waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds.
Nitrate Cartridges. Certain filters such as Fluval G6 allows for removable nitrate cartridges that can quickly remove nitrate from fish tanks.
Protein Skimmers. Protein Skimmers work by bringing fish waste to the surface using tiny bubbles that latch themselves to the waste and this will then be easily discarded from the skimmer.
The most important thing to remember in keeping nitrate levels in check is to keep your tank clean and reduce the amount of waste and decay in the tank. Just doing this alone will ensure that you do not have to worry about the level of nitrate in your fish tank ever again.

Picking the best Recirculating Aquarium Pump
Oct 17th
Picking the best Recirculating Aquarium Pump
What’s one of the most important aspects of keeping your aquarium clean and healthy? A recirculating aquarium water pump helps keep the water squeaky clean and sparking clear, leading to healthier, happier fish and a beautiful aquarium experience. That means you need to put some real thought into choosing the right water pump for your aquarium, because it’s the lynch pin that everything else hinges on.
A good water pump powers your filtration system in your aquarium, and the size of the pump depends on a lot of factors. How far do you have to pump the water? How fast do you want the water to flow? Will you use your pump to power other devices, like a protein skimmer? These are all questions you need to answer before you purchase the right pump for your system. If you have questions, ask them before you choose a pump, or you could be disappointed.
You need to know how many gallons per hour (GPH) your pump needs to process, and you need to account for any bends or turns in your plumbing system to help determine the size of the pump you need. There is a method to calculate the GPH. Most owners try to recycle the aquarium volume about four times per hour. For example, this means your pump should be able to circulate five times as many gallons as your tank holds. If your aquarium holds 10 gallons, your pump should flow at a minimum of 50 GPH. If you have a lot of plumbing restrictions, it may be a good idea to purchase a pump up one size from the size you calculate you need.
There are two types of recirculating aquarium water pumps, submersible and in-line, and each has some advantages and disadvantages. Submersibles, as you’d expect, operate completely underwater, sometimes in the sump area of the filtration system. They pull water through the filter, and pump it back into the aquarium, sometimes through other devices. These types of pumps are usually quieter than in-line models, and they’re easier to install. However, the pumps are water-cooled, which means they could add additional heat to your aquarium. They also tend to be bulky, so you need to make sure there’s room for them in your sump area.
In-line pumps sit outside the aquarium, and connect to it through an inlet and outlet hose. These pumps are air-cooled, so they won’t alter the temperature of your aquarium, and they usually bigger, more powerful pumps than the submersibles. Most in-line pumps are configured to fit into either a pressure or free-flow system, but not both.
Another important aspect of choosing the right pump is purchasing it from a reputable dealer known for their quality and selection of pumps. Check out any online pet supply merchant for a huge selection of recirculating aquarium water pumps of all shapes and sizes, for anything from saltwater to fresh water aquariums large or small. Look for some of the best-known water pump lines, like Marine Line and Coralife.
Most all water pumps can be used in either a salt or fresh water system, but don’t forget you have to buy things like clamps and hoses separately, because recirculating aquarium water pumps don’t automatically come with these accessories.
Recirculating aquarium water pumps may sound complicated, but they’re really not that hard to understand. Just be sure to use a reputable dealer who can help you choose just the right water pump for your aquarium. With the right water pump, maintaining your aquarium plants and animals will truly be a breeze!
Julie’s Pet Market carries some of the best-known water pump lines, like Marine Line and Coralife, and they even have pumps you can use outdoors, too.

Which Filter Media Is Best For My Aquarium?
There are many different kinds of filter media that are avalible for water treatment in aquariums and fish tanks, but which is best for your aquarium and how do they differ? Part of gaining an insight into using the right filter media for your aquarium is understanding the strains on your fish and the conditions of their environment.
The nitrogen cycle begins with any waste products which are produced by your fish. A kind of bacteria known as “nitrofiers” works to break down these waste products (called ammonia) into nitrites. This is later then further broken down by the same bacteria in the final product, nitrates. The first two of these chemicals in the process are both highly toxic to fish and the last may prove to be fatal in large enough quantities. If your fish are experiencing a large level of any of these chemicals, then it is likely your filter is not providing enough purification alone and additional water treatment is recommended.
A simple way to test if your aquarium could use extra water treatment is to look at level of nitrates in the water, this can be done by using a test strip which reports the level of nitrate in your water. 50 ppm is a deadly level for many species of fish and the lower the level of concentration the better. Polyester media and charcoal media work by chemical filtration by trapping particles passing through your water into the media and charcoal in many cases is believed to be more effective.
Foam bloaks of many different brands have also proved popular in many fish and aquarium enthusiasts. Although these may need regular cleaning, they can provide additional filtration as well as allowing the benefical bacteria, nitrofiers, to build up in your aquarium. With a combination of sponges and either a charcoal or polyester filter media, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate should be kept low in your aquarium. Finally, many plants also are useful in the nitrogen cycle and will help you keep on top of providing a healthy environment for your fish.
In conclusion, providing your tank is left to cycle before introducing fish for several weeks, with a mixture of mechanical and biological filtration your water may never need additional treatment. Make sure to check your water regularly and should you find a high level of toxic chemicals to your fish, consider additional plantation and either charcoal or polyester medias.

Choosing the Best Filter for a Freshwater Aquarium
Aug 21st
Choosing the Best Filter for a Freshwater Aquarium
When it comes to setting up your fish tank, the filter deserves major consideration as it is the primary tool for maintaining good water quality in the tank. The question that often arises is, “What is the best filter for a freshwater aquarium?” The answer to that question depends on a number of factors including, but not limited to:
Tank size
Number and type of fish
Live plants in the tank or not
Budget
Required maintenance
With that in mind, I will briefly describe the major types of aquarium filters with a few pros and cons about each. This should give a very good base of knowledge to help with the decision of what type of filter to get.
There may be some other obscure filters available, but the most common types on the market today are the following:
Hang on Back (HOB) Filters – This is probably the easiest filter to maintain, as it is not submerged in the tank and most come with an easily replaceable cartridge. This filter hangs off the edge of the tank so it doesn’t interfere with the tank’s display. Prices vary, but this style of filter is in the middle of the range.
Undergravel Filters – This type works well in small to mid size aquariums. The undergravel filter promotes very good biological filtration and generally doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. It can be quite a project when it does need service, though. The undergravel filter is not recommended if you want live plants in the aquarium, as the root systems will get intertwined and decrease the effectiveness of the filter.
Canister Filters – Canisters are among the most versatile, yet most expensive filtration systems available. They are very popular with saltwater tank keepers because of the extra filtration steps that are sometimes required in a marine tank. Like the HOB filters, they are outside of the tank and therefore don’t take up any room inside of the aquarium. Once set up, a canister filter can often go months without servicing it. This type is a solid choice for large aquariums.
Internal Power Filter – As the name states, these filters go inside the tank, usually affixed to the side with suction cups. They are efficient filters and are very good choices for tanks with low water levels like a turtle or biotope tank. These filters can push a fair amount of water with their outflow, and this can be a pro or con depending on the type of fish in the tank.
Box or Sponge Filters – Many a fish hobbyist has started out with this filter. The simplicity and very low cost are keys to this filter’s popularity. It is powered simply by attaching an air pump, and the box filter is best suited for small aquariums. It sits in the corner of the tank so it does take up some internal space, and when it comes time to clean the filter it can be a bit of a messy process. That said, the box filter is still a good, inexpensive choice for a 10 gallon aquarium.

Which Aquarium Filter Is Best For You?

Which Aquarium Filter Is Best For You?
Having a good aquarium filter is vital for the health of your tropical fish and to have a crystal-clear tank that you enjoy looking at. Without filtration, your fish would quickly die as the water would build up with ammonia from their waste and uneaten food. This ammonia becomes toxic to your fish so you need to provide them with a healthy clean environment and ammonia free water which has been filtered properly.
There are basically three types of filters that one uses in a home aquarium, power filters, under gravel filters and canister filters. Some people even use more than one kind in a single aquarium. the type of filter that is best for you depends on the size of aquarium you have and whether it is saltwater or freshwater.
Under gravel aquarium filters are a great choice for tanks that are 40 gallons and under. These filters are nothing more than a plastic slotted piece that goes in the very bottom of your tank underneath the gravel or substrate and tubes that run up the side. The under gravel filter is a biological filter that pulls the water through the gravel and then returns it at the top of the tank. the problem with these is that the fish waste also tends to get sucked down into the gravel and you really need to vacuum it pretty frequently. They also can get clogged (although I had one for many years and it never did) and they are not recommended If you want to have aquarium plants. On the other hand, they are quite low-maintenance as they do not have any filters or cartridges to change and unless you have a problem they pretty much run unattended.
Power filters are the most common home aquarium filters and most people will recognize these as the ones that hang off the back of the tank. They are a great choice for mechanical filtration and tanks that are under 55 gallons. these filters usually hang on outside of the tank and have it to him that runs down into the water and a pump that sucks the water up into the unit filtering it through some kind of a cartridge. Most of them also have either a carbon cartridge to provide chemical filtration, or some kind of a by a wheel or sponge that provides biological filtration. Many aquarists combine the power filter with the under gravel filter to get the best of both worlds and crystal-clear aquarium water.
Canister filters are recommended for tanks over 55 gallons and tanks that are going to be saltwater or marine aquariums. These types of filters will provide you with both mechanical, biological and chemical filtration and will also allow you to adjust how much of each you get. These units can be hidden underneath in the aquarium stand so are a bit more aesthetically pleasing than the power filters. They have tubes that run into them and the water is pushed from the tank through the tubes into the filtering material and then back into the tank once it is filtered.
It’s important to get aquarium filter that works right for your size and type of tank otherwise you’ll just be unsuccessful in your fish keeping efforts. Having the proper filtration will make sure that your water quality is near-perfect in your fish are happy and healthy in you’re aquarium crystal clear.

The most popular chillers available on the market are; drop in chillers, in line chillers and thermoelectric chillers. All of these chillers come with pros and cons and the key to selecting the best type of chiller for a freshwater aquarium is to follow these simple tips.
The first tip for finding the best type of chiller for a freshwater aquarium is to take a close look at the type of convenience each chiller has to offer. If you feel that plumbing is not ideal for you then drop in chillers will be your best option. Since drop in chillers are basically cooling coils that have to be dropped into the wet dry filter or sump. They are extremely low maintenance and cost effective.
The second tip to follow to find the best type of chiller for a freshwater aquarium is to use your aquarium capacity as a guideline. If your aquarium contains less than 50 gallons water and has less water flow, then opting for a thermoelectric chillers would be a good option for you. If your aquarium is larger than 50 gallons or has increased water flow then opting for a powerful in line filter would be the best choice.
The third tip to help you decide the best type of chiller for a freshwater aquarium is to decide if you want a chiller temporarily (during the warmer months) or if you want a chiller left in your aquarium year round. If cost is a concern and you will only need the chiller a few months out of the year then buying a inexpensive temporary one is a good solution. If you want to keep your chiller available year round then a more expensive one is the way to go. A good quality chiller can be used for many years and does not require constant maintenance. In the long run you save money by purchasing a more expensive chiller for your aquarium right from the start.
