Coldwater Aquarium As A Hobby
Many people indulge in various hobbies, and an aquarium is one of them. It is extremely popular, and it requires a little time and patience to set it up so that you can enjoy it. To install a coldwater tank is a fun hobby and it can be done with minimum effort. A coldwater tank does not need heating to be installed. All fish cannot survive in this tank – there are only some varieties that survive here without heat like guppies and goldfish, but, of course there are innumerable fish available that could adorn your coldwater tank.
Supplies Required For Coldwater Set-up
You may feel that the supplies you need are endless, but you can go for a smaller and inexpensive list than what is required for a saltwater or a heated tank. Your first requirement is the purchase of a tank. This depends on individual taste as there are so many different dimensions and shapes. There is a kit that is included with the tank, but you need to see that you have an air pump and a filter, as this is the key to the set-up. When purchasing the kit, you must see that the set-up is for a coldwater tank – you will find that there is no heater.
Having bought the tank, you will now need to decorate it. There are innumerable colors of sand and gravel – include some accent plants so that it looks as natural as possible. You may want to add figures to give it a unique look – you will also need an algae scraper and a net.
If the tank that you choose is lit up, you must remember that it will get warm and this will cause algae to increase, but this can be cleaned without any trouble, and since the fish like light, you could go for a tank that comes with light. Remember to keep your tank where the sun’s rays do not hit the tank as the algae will increase.
The next step after your tank is set up is to add the fish – you will need to get coldwater fish of which there are a whole lot of varieties to choose from. You can get tips from a pet store – they will be happy to advise you.
The tank needs to be periodically cleaned at least once in two months, the algae removed, water changed and basically keep the tank spotless, so that you can enjoy the fish and the ambience of the tank. You will find that all the trouble you have taken will be worth it as you will enjoy the fruits of your labor and a hobby that is worth pursuing.

Why Do Cats Use Scratching Posts?
Cats have an inherent nature that leads them to want to scratch and climb. If you haven’t given them a proper tool to do this on, then they will proceed to do it on whatever they can find, including your furniture, curtain, counters, or your leg! Why exactly does a cat feel the need to scratch? For one thing, they just find it to be a fun activity. It also works to knock off the dead layers of nail that their claws have.

Fish Tanks Require Love and Care

From small one-quart bowls to 55-gallon aquariums and numerous sizes in between, these fish tanks all need proper care to keep their inhabitants alive and well.
However, the success of your foray into fish tanks will depend on one thing; the amount of time and effort you are willing to put into them.
The entire thinking about fish tanks has changed over the past few years with some aquariums now referred to as aqua furniture or aqua art. There are aquariums made to be recessed into a wall, or designed to fit into a corner.
Fish tanks can even be special ordered in most shapes to fit your needs. Those in the wall, framed by wood, may appear to be a living painting. Materials used in fish tanks also changed over the years.
Clear, molded acrylic is gradually replacing glass as the primary material since it has been developed not to become cloudy over time. This also reduces the danger of breakage that exists with glass and can add years of enjoyment to you fish tanks. Necessary Accessories Depend On Hobby Having one or two small gold fish in a bowl does not require a huge investment. Food for the fish and the willingness to change to the water when needed will usually keep the fish alive for the duration of their life span. Planning to raise more or bigger fish will require more accessories for your fish tank. With fish tanks holding ten gallons or more of water, you will need a water pump and filter set to keep the water clean and moving. Without them the water will need to be changed frequently as it begins to get dirty.
An air filter will also be required to keep air flowing through the water. Fish require oxygen to survive and without fresh air being introduced, they may suffocate. Fish tanks also will need a light, usually a fixture that attaches to the top and provides light into the water to keep the fish from sleeping all the time.
A heater is also a good idea for fish tanks as it will help maintain the water at a constant temperature ensuring your fish won’t be cooked if it gets too hot or lethargic if it is too cold. Bigger fish tanks will require bigger accessories, and if you have fish tanks special ordered in unusual shapes, the manufacturer of the fish tanks will most likely be your only source for accessories such as the bottom filter and lamp hood.

Live Aquarium Plants – 3 Simple Tips On Their Care

]]>
1. Enhance the natural setting of your aquarium
Live plants add oxygen to the water of the tank and keep it in a balanced condition while aiding the health of the fish. Not only are live plants beneficial to the fish they also add to the beauty of the tank and make it look more natural.
2. Lighting important for live plants
To maintain live plants in the aquarium you must ensure the correct kind of lighting. To have healthy plants in your aquarium you should have about 3 watts of light per gallon of water. Fluorescent lights are nice for tanks and give a good pleasing effect. One thing you have to be careful of with fluorescent lights is that plants that have leaves at different levels will not get sufficient light at some point.
3. Maintenance of live plants
After deciding on the kind of lighting you want for your aquarium, you should pay heed to the hardness of the water. Most plants need a hardness level of 4 to 12 dH and 6.5 to &.2 pH for the water. Apart from this plants need clear and clean water so you should ensure that the water is always maintained clean in the aquarium. Plants do not keep healthy if there is too much debris in the water, so cleaning of the tank is a very essential job.
After you have ensured the condition of the water for the plants, you should maintain their nutrients for healthy growth. Both macro and micro nutrients are required by plants. Macro nutrients are present in the water and need never be added on, while micro nutrients are needed in small quantities. The micro nutrients that plants need in the water are zinc, iron and copper.
However, the fish in the water generally supply all the nutrients that are needed for the healthy growth of aquatic plants. So you do not have to add on any supplements at all for the nutrition of the plants. Avoid filtration systems that are put under the gravel as they disturb the surface with the steady flow of the bubbles. Most other filtration systems are fine. Too much disturbance by filtration systems causes the carbon dioxide to be lost and this is not good for the plants. The filter should keep the nutrients flowing through the water with the current that it creates.
With a good chemical balance and a properly functioning filter system in the tank, the plants in your tank will be healthy and with good growth. Not only will the healthy plants give a good look to your aquarium, the fish will also remain happy with this natural environment that you have created for them.

Like dogs, cats are great domestic pets since they don’t demand much of their owner’s attention. Just feed them well, and provide their litter box and they’re good to go. Unfortunately, we have to clean the litter box ourselves. That’s quite a hassle. Another thing, a cat litter box is still a non-biodegradable solid waste. Good thing, cat genie has been invented.

Maintaining Goldfish
Accidents that occur in aquarium fish ending in tragedy is usually down to the ignorance on the part of the owner in not providing adequate fish care. When planning on setting up an aquarium in your home it is important that you learn everything you need to know on how to care for your fish, especially for the different types of fish. The most commonly sold fish is the goldfish, which with your patience, requires attention with proper care and maintenance. You can get a lot of advice from your local pet store as well as books to buy so that you can read up at home, and use as a reference when you need to refresh your knowledge. You can also books from your local library.
An aquarium is the ideal habitat for a goldfish as it gives them ample room to breathe, and swim. They are much bigger than a goldfish bowl or small container which were largely used in the past. Goldfish have great demands for oxygen like many other living creatures, and they have acquire this from the surface of an aquarium. Choose an aquarium that gives sufficient space for this. To calculate the space required you need to look at the length in inches of a fish, and the depth of the tank. For each inch of a goldfish, the recommendation is about 30 square inches of surface space. You will also need to add on a few extra square inches to allow for your goldfish to grow, which it will in time. This ensures that they have plenty of oxygen to breathe.
When shopping for an aquarium, the store assistants should be able to assist you on the ideal tank for your goldfish. You will already have an idea of how many goldfish you wish to keep, so this will be a deciding factor of the size of tank required. Read up on the different variety of goldfish on the market so the store representative can provide you with the correct information and aquarium suitable. Do your research first before you purchase anything so you know what to look for straightaway. As living creatures, it is up to you as fish owners, to preserve their lives. By doing research, you will become knowledgeable and be able to decide on the ideal variety that appeals to you. You will learn about maintenance of the plants and other fish you may want to keep in your aquarium. Having a basic knowledge is a good thing so you know exactly what goes well together in a tank and how to maintain it.
Most fish apart from the odd few need high quality water. Tap water is usually fine, although it is more likely to build up pollutants. Ask your local pet store for advice before using tap water and see what they recommend. They will have local knowledge of the condition of tap water in the area, and whethe it is suitable for maintaining fish. Tap water should be run for about five minutes before you fill up the tank as this will rid it of any chemicals or dissipate them. Water can also be left overnight to rid it of more chemicals as it contains chlorine, copper, metals and all sorts of contaminating substances. By setting the water overnight, you will minimise the build up of chlorine, and the water will also reach room temperature.
Room temperature can be maintained by using humidifiers, or dehumidifiers, which can be kept near the tank. Goldfish water should be made pure and clear of chemicals at all times. So that you can maintain pure fish water, you can purchase filters, vacuums, gravel, floss and other items which all help. You will need to learn how filtration works as ammonia builds up in aquariums as well. Read and learn about biological, chemical and mechanical filters.

Identify Goldfish Diseases And Keep Your Aquarium Healthy
The amount and type of care necessary to maintain a healthy aquarium and avoid goldfish diseases will depend both on the type (saltwater or fresh water) and size of the tank and the number and type of fish that it contains. In general, after the initial startup period, regular aquarium maintenance should be fairly straightforward. In fact, an aquarium that is properly set up should eventually reach a state of balance that requires only routine maintenance.

Aquarium Care Advice

Aquarium care is a necessity but very gratifying. Aquariums are a great addition to the interior of any office, or even restaurant. Aquariums are fast becoming one of the most popular hobbies around, and many people use aquariums for interior decorating purposes. Aquariums are available in a number of shapes, the most common being rectangular. However, aquariums are not an item that can be set up and then left unattended. Aquariums are easy to keep up with as long as tank maintenance is performed periodically and with a little care.
Here are a few tips for keeping your aquarium healthy for your fish that will ensure they live a healthy and happy life for you to enjoy for some time to come.
1) Perform a visual check of your aquarium every day.
2) Wipe down the inner and outer glass of the aquarium to keep any algae from building up on the inside; this helps to improve the condition of the water as well as enabling you to see the fish.
3) Never use any kind of detergent or soap to clean inside or outside the aquarium, as the chemicals will cause harm and distress to the fish.
4) Take care in cleaning the inside of the aquarium glass as gravel will scratch it if you happen to pick some up when you put your hand inside.
5) Although you may think its a good idea to periodically change all of the aquariums water to give the fish a fresh start this is not good practice.
6) Tap water is not a suitable life basis for your fish and plant life. Additives that make tap water suitable for human beings can harm fish and micro organisms in aquariums.
Aquariums must be cared for on a regular basis or they will become dirty and stagnant, causing the inhabitants of the tank (the plant life and the fish) to suffer and to eventually die. Every week, replace between about a quarter of the water in the tank. No more than 40 percent of the tank water should be changed at once. Fish are very sensitive to the ecosystem balance in the tank and dramatic changes can cause a large shock to their systems.
If you wish to clean the filter fabric instead of replacing it, do not rinse it off in the tank, simply pool some of the tank water into a container and rinse it there. Keep in mind, that larger tanks are easier to take care of than small tanks. It is a good idea to only replace and maintain half of the aquariums filters at a time; leaving the other 50% in place until your next scheduled maintenance.
Properly maintained aquariums and ponds add a look of professionalism to offices, a homely feeling to domestic houses and a colorful talking point in restaurants.

Aquarium care is a necessity but plenty of fun. Aquariums are a great addition to the interior of any home, or even restaurant. Aquariums are fast becoming one of the leading hobbies around, and many people use aquariums for decorative purposes. Aquariums are available in a wide variety of shapes, the most common being rectangular. However, aquariums are not an item that can be set up and then left unattended. Aquariums are not difficult to keep up with as long as tank maintenance is performed periodically and with a little care.
Here are a few tips for maintaining a healthy aquarium environment for your fish that will ensure they live a long and happy life for you to enjoy for some time to come.
1) Keep an eye on your aquarium every day.
2) Wipe down the inner and outer glass of the aquarium to keep any algae from accumulating on the inside; this helps to improve the condition of the water as well as enabling you to see the fish.
3) Never use any kind of detergent or soap to clean inside or outside the aquarium, as the chemicals will cause harm and distress to the fish.
4) Take care in cleaning the inside of the aquarium glass as gravel will scratch it if you happen to pick some up when you put your hand inside.
5) Although you may think its a good idea to periodically change all of the aquariums water to give the fish a fresh start this is a very bad idea.
6) Tap water is not suitable for your fish and plant life. Additives that make tap water suitable for us humans can harm fish and micro organisms in aquariums.
Aquariums must be cared for regularly or they will become dirty and stagnant, causing the inhabitants of the tank (the plant life and the fish) to suffer and to eventually die. Every week, replace between 25 to 30 percent of the water in the tank. No more than 40 percent of the tank water should be changed at once. Fish are very sensitive to the ecosystem balance in the tank and any change can cause a large shock to their systems.
If you wish to clean the filter fabric instead of replacing it, do not rinse it off in the tank, simply take some of the tank water into a small bucket and rinse it there.

Complete Aquarium Care

Aquarium care is a necessity but very gratifying. Aquariums are a great addition to the interior of any office, or even restaurant. Aquariums are fast becoming one of the leading hobbies around, and a lot of folks use aquariums for decorative purposes. Aquariums are available in a number of shapes, the most popular being rectangular. However, aquariums are not an item that can be set up and then left unattended. Aquariums are easy to keep up with as long as tank maintenance is performed periodically and with a little care.
Here are a few tips for keeping your aquarium healthy for your fish that will ensure they live a healthy and happy life for you to enjoy for the future.
1) Perform a visual check of your aquarium every day.
2) Wipe down the inner and outer surfaces of the aquarium to keep any algae from accumulating on the inside; this helps to improve the condition of the water as well as being able to view the fish.
3) Never use any kind of detergent or soap to clean in or around the aquarium, as the chemicals will cause harm and distress to the fish.
4) Take care in cleaning the inside of the aquarium glass as gravel will scratch it if you accidentally pick some up when you put your hand inside.
5) Although you may think its a good idea to periodically change all of the aquariums water to give the fish a fresh start this is not good practice.
6) Tap water is not suitable for aquarium inhabitants. Additives that make tap water suitable for us humans can harm fish and micro organisms in aquariums.
Aquariums must be cared for regularly or they will become dirty and stagnant, causing the inhabitants of the tank (the plant life and the fish) to suffer and to eventually die. Every week, replace between about a quarter of the water in the tank. No more than 40 percent of the tank water should be changed at any one time. Fish are very sensitive to the ecosystem balance in the tank and any change can cause a large shock to their systems.
If you wish to clean the filter fabric instead of replacing it, do not rinse it off in the tank, simply take some of the tank water into a container and rinse it there. Keep in mind, that larger tanks are easier to take care of than small tanks. It is a good idea to only replace and maintain half of the aquariums filters at a time; leaving the other 50% in place until your next cleaning session.
Properly maintained aquariums and ponds add a look of professionalism to offices, a homely feeling to domestic houses and a colorful talking point in restaurants.

Aquarium Care – 9 Great Tips For Daily and Weekly Maintenance

Owning a fish is probably one of the easiest pets to have. There is no walking, no training and no pet hair all over the place. Fish keep in an aquarium where you can watch them all the time. This means no running away either. This doesn’t mean that you can throw some fish in a tank and never think about it again. There are basic care procedures for an aquarium.
Daily Requirements
1. Check the aquarium to see if the fish are healthy. You can tell by the color of the fish. If the fish seem to be fading in color, you will want to check the conditions of water. If a fish is stressed, it won’t last long.
2. Feed the fish everyday. Some fish require just one feeding a day where many freshwater fish require two. The most important thing to note is not to overfeed them. If you overfeed, the first are going to die. It shouldn’t take longer than two to five minutes for the fish to eat the food you put in there. If it is taking longer than that or the fish left any food, scoop it out. You don’t want to leave the food in the water and possibly contaminate the aquarium.
3. Check the lights and filters to ensure they are running properly.
Weekly Requirements
4. Check the pH and temperature of the aquarium. This is important for your fish to thrive. Anything outside of the norm will result in damage to the fish. The aquarium is their home and they need it to be as close as possible to the natural habitat. If there are any problems, fix them immediately. You can get pH buffers at a local pet store. If you have warm water fish, check the heater to make sure it is working properly. You can find out the proper water conditions from a book or your local pet shop.
5. Check the filters to see if they need cleaning. The filters usually need to be changed about two to three weeks, but looking them over once a week isn’t going to hurt. The filters are there to clean the water to ensure your fish are getting the right amount of oxygen. The filters will fill with debris and waste. If left untreated, you won’t have any fish left to care for.
6. Changing the water is important to the fish as well. This should be done every week or every two weeks. You won’t change the entire tank though. Start by turning off any plugged in equipment to ensure your own safety. Only change one-third of the water because the fish might not be able to handle harsh changes to the water. Tap water might have to be treated with a purification system or a treatment kit. The water should also be within two degrees of the tank water.
7. Clean inside of the aquarium to remove any algae build up, but do so without bothering the fish. You can do this when changing the water. It is probably easier this way. Collect the algae and debris in a bucket or vacuum.
8. Prune the plants in the tank. There might be some dead leaves that are unsightly and unhealthy.
9. Clean the outside. You can do this with soap and tap water. When you are doing this, also clean the hood.

How To Set Up And Care For A Fish Tank

The amount and type of care necessary will depend both on the water type, the size of the tank and the number of fish that it holds. As a general rule, after the initial set up, regular maintenance of the tank should be relatively straightforward. In fact, an tank that has been set up correctly should eventually reach a state of equilibrium that will require only a minimum level of work.
Water Quality: The Key To Fish Health
Regardless of the type of fish or style of tank, it is critical that you maintain the proper pH levels in the water. Consider your fish tank to be a swimming pool for your fish. Just as a swimming pool that does not have its water tested regularly will quickly turn into an algae-filled swamp, a fish tank that is not monitored for water quality will quickly become poisonous for your fish. You can quickly test the water quality yourself by purchasing a test kit from an aquarium supply store or pet store but the easiest method is to establish a relationship with the aquarium store and take a jar of water to them regularly for testing. The store will also be able to supply you with any chemicals or treatments that your fish require.
In addition to monitoring the pH level and water quality, you will need to make partial water changes as part of your fish tank care. To clean a fish tank it is not necessary to drain all the water, scrub out the tank and refill it with fresh water. All that is necessary is to siphon off around one quarter to one third of the water from the tank and replace this with fresh water from the tap. If you water is chlorinated you will need to add dechlorinating solution to the fresh water or leave the water sitting in a bucket for 24 hours or more before adding it to your aquarium.
Never clean the glass in your tank with soap. The residue is almost impossible to remove and it will almost certainly kill your fish. Partial water changes once every two to three weeks are all that are required once your tank has been properly established.
A sound filtration system and one that is bit enough for your aquarium size also plays an important role in keeping the aquarium clean. A filter that is too small will not circulate enough water and will not filter out enough impurities and your tank will become discolored with algae. Maintaining the oxygen level in the water is important to the health of the fish and an effective filter will also assist in maintaining the oxygen level by recirculating the water.
Following these steps in setting up and caring for your goldfish and they\’ll reward you with years of pleasure as you enjoy your aquarium fish tank.
