How to Clean a Very Dirty Fish Tank
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, life gets in the way and your aquarium gets out of control. You start thinking that it would be better to empty the whole thing, throw everything away and start from scratch. It’s happened to me before, believe me. But stop! Before you give in to temptation… if you tear it down you will lose any beneficial bacteria that have colonized your tank. Only if your tank is in severely bad condition, it may be worth having to start over.
Now, if you find yourself with the need of having to clean a very dirty fish tank, you’ll need a few tools. Believe it or not, you can do a great cleaning of a dirty tank without losing your good bacteria colonies. It may take a little effort and time, but you’ll be rewarded with a sparkling aquarium and happy fish. So, let’s get ready for battle.
These are your weapons:
• Algae scraper or scrubbing pad
• Plastic razor blade (only use plastic on acrylic tanks)
• Water siphon
• Bucket
• Bleach
• Aquarium glass cleaner
• Filter media
• Filter brush
• Paper towels
• Old bath towels
It works very well to clean your aquarium in the following order:
1. Inside of glass
2. Decorations
3. Gravel
4. Outside of glass and hood
5. Filter
First of all, remove your fish and any other creatures that live in your aquarium. Place them in a container that is reserved for fish only using water removed from the tank. Be careful where you put them. It’s always good to have a bucket dedicated exclusively to your fish tank, for carrying the water when you change it, and in cases like this, to put your fish. Make sure you use a brand new bucket. Old buckets may have residues of chemicals or detergents that may get transferred into your aquarium.
The inside of the glass
Take one of your algae scrubbing pads and clean the inside of the glass. You can find many types of scrubbers at the fish store. Some have handles, some are just pads. Some have magnets so you don’t even need to put your hands into the water because they work through the glass, but these are better for maintenance than to do a thorough cleaning. While you may see scrubbers at the fish store that look just like the ones you can find in the supermarket or in your kitchen, get the ones from the fish store, NEVER use any other kind of scrubber. Regular scrubbers may contain soap or chemicals that will kill your fish.
If you have some residue on the surface that is resisting the scrubber, you can use a razor blade. If your tank is acrylic, be sure you get a plastic razor blade, since a standard one will scratch the acrylic.
Decorations
Remove any rocks, decorations and artificial plants that are covered with algae or look dirty.
Again, NEVER use soap or detergents on these items! It can prove lethal to your fish. Scrub them with your algae scrubber. This will remove most of the algae and dirt. If you have some particularly hard to clean spots, you can soak them in a bucket containing a 10% bleach solution. Let the items soak for 15 minutes, then scrub off the stubborn spots. Rinse the decorations really, really well with running water and let them air dry.
You may be surprised to learn that live plants can also be bleached, if needed, with the exception of stem plants. Live plants should have a 5% bleach solution in your bucket. Soak the plants for only 2 or 3 minutes. Rinse them off really well in running water.
The Gravel
Vacuum the gravel in the aquarium with your aquarium siphon. You can get one that you can connect directly to the faucet in the kitchen, siphon the water out, and use the same hose to fill the tank again. Vacuum the gravel thoroughly until the debris and the dirt is gone. I have almost ran out of water and there still a lot of dirt, but I just pour more water in and siphon it out until it’s better.
The Outside of the Glass
Now it is time to clean the hood, the lights, the top of the tank and the outside of the glass. Don’t use normal glass cleaners… they contain ammonia. If you are tempted to use lime cleaner, or any other commercial cleaner, stop! They are very toxic to fish. Get a cleaner from the fish store created just for this purpose or use vinegar. And remember, rinse really well afterward, and then rinse it again! Even when you clean the outside of the glass, you have to be really careful, better not to risk it.
Cleaning the Filter
Now that most of your tank is done, you can decorate again and put your plants back in. Don’t clean your filter yet… wait a few weeks. I know you may be in the middle of a cleaning binge now, but refrain from touching your filter. Cleaning your tank has disturbed your colonies of beneficial bacteria. Luckily, they also live in your filter media. Cycling the new water through your filter will help repopulate the tank. If you clean your filter at the same time you clean your tank, you may cause an ammonia spike that can be lethal to your fish.
Okay, now its a few weeks later and it is time to clean your filter. Do you just replace the filter media or do you clean everything? Depending on the type of media you use, the answer may be different. If your filter media is made up of ion-exchange resins, carbon or ammonia absorbers, replace it if it has been in the filter for more than three weeks. The media is exhausted by this time, and no longer provides the benefits it did before. Mechanical filters like sponges, ceramic rings or fiber can be rinsed lightly to remove dirt and debris while leaving the bacteria somewhat intact. To protect the bacteria, use water the same temperature as your tank and return the media back to the filter immediately.
You should also clean out the tubing and other pieces of the filter assembly. You can use a filter brush to remove any sludge or debris that has built up in crevices.
Create a Maintenance Schedule
Now that your tank is beautiful again, give yourself a simple maintenance schedule so you don’t have to spend all day doing a major cleaning again. Do partial water changes every couple of weeks, remove algae on the glass and décor every week or as soon as you see it. That’s where the magnets come in handy. Do filter cleaning every month as described above. You can also keep your fish nets in great condition by occasionally soaking them in a bleach solution and rinsing them extra well to keep them clean. Your aquarium will become your new pride and joy and you’ll be able to enjoy your fish once again.

A good aquarium is always clean. Well, not sparkling clean, but clean enough for fish to stay healthy and for you to appreciate the good, clean look of an aquarium. A fish tank gets dirty over time, for many reasons such as accumulated waste materials, algae, and other materials such as leftover food, etc. Although freshwater aquarium maintenance is quite tedious and has some very delicate procedures, getting used to them can ensure that your aquarium can stay hygienic, and remain good health promoting and aesthetically pleasing to the eye for a long time.
Remove the old water
The first thing that you have to do is to remove the old water from the tank. Separate the fish from the main tank in a hospital tank for a while. If you have aquatic plants in your fish tank then you must include them in the hospital tank, and remove all other objects inside the aquarium for individual cleaning.
Scrub away excess dirt and algae
This can take a long time, depending on how well it was cleaned last time. But primarily, you’ll have to remove the dirt that was left after removing everything else in the aquarium. If you are using acrylic tanks, it’s better to use a soft sponge when removing the algae, so as not to scratch the aquarium (otherwise, you’ll have to use those algae pads).
Replace or clean the filter media of your filter
For cleanliness purposes, it’s actually better to replace the filters than to just clean them, although cleaning the filters one or two times before replacing can save you a lot more money in the long run. Remember, just clean once, twice or thrice, and then replace the filter. This will maximize both cost and effectiveness. And oh, don’t use any kind of soap or detergent while cleaning the filter.
Clean the other articles of the aquarium
Decorations such as small corals and shells should be soaked in warm water mixed with a good amount of salt. After soaking for a few minutes, scrub away using a sponge to clean the excess dirt off. Remember, NEVER use soap or any kind of detergent. It’s often difficult to rid an object of its soap content after washing it in 100%, and even just tiny bits of soap can be lethal for your fish.
Replace the water
After cleaning all of the other articles, including the tank itself, then it’s time to replace the water. If your home tap water is already tested for its pH level, then you can start to fill the aquarium again with water. Regulate the toxicity levels for a bit, and afterwards, transfer the fishes and aquatic plants back into the main tank. Your aquarium is now ready again for the next weeks to come!
One last note to those clean freaks out there: while it might be good that you clean the aquarium regularly, it is not good to clean it very often. Constantly transferring the fish from one container to another can stress them, so you have to regulate the frequency of those freshwater aquarium maintenance schedules, just enough to keep them safe and healthy.

Cleaning your aquarium is vital not only for a crystal clear view inside, but also for the health of your fish. for proper aquarium maintenance, cleaning should be done about once a month and while this might seem like an arduous task, once you have it down to a routine it really won’t take you that long at all.

To vacuum the tank, you’ll need a special gizmo that has a large round tube at one and with plastic tubing coming out. The large round tube goes into the tank and this is what you use as the vacuum the other hand is into either the sink or a bucket and this is where the water comes out. to start siphoning the water and vacuuming you have to create a siphon with the vacuum tube and I usually do this by dipping it in some of the water and then holding upside down to get the water flowing than putting it right back into the water to continue the suction. Once you’ve accomplished this, you simply go about vacuuming the bottom by putting the tube on top of the gravel. I like to stir the gravel up a bit to get all of the debris that has settled down into it. Be careful not to get too carried away though as you only want to siphon out about 25% of the water
Once you have done the vacuuming, it’s time to do the scrubbing. you’ll need to have a special sponge that is made for scrubbing algae and if you have an acrylic tank be sure to get one that will not damage the acrylic. .You want to scrub all the algae off the sides of the tank and any decorations in the tank as well as the filters and tubes for the filters and heaters and whatnot that go down into the tank.
Now you need to replace the water. Be sure to use dechlorinated water that is at the same temperature as the water in the tank. Adding water that is too hot or too cold will cause a large fluctuation in the aquarium water temperature which can be harmful to your fish. Be sure to use a water conditioner made specifically for aquariums before adding the water to the tank. This might be a good time to get out your test kit and check the aquarium water to be sure it has the right levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
Cleaning your aquarium doesn’t have to be a big job. In fact, you can make it a little easier on yourself by taking care to not overfeed to fish, and by buying a Chinese Algae Eater that will help you scrub the algae that accumulates on the sides of the tank and the decorations. No matter what, however, you will want to periodically change out the water to make sure you are providing the best quality environment for your fish.

No one can deny how important fish tank filters are to an aquarium set up. Without them, the fishes and other aquatic life would not enjoy a clean and healthy environment which is just right to live and breed in. Along with a heater, they form a complete system that replicates the environment that the fish came from as close as humanly possible.
However, this is subject to the filters working well. Being dirty is one main reason why a filter will not function to its best capability. A filter that is dirty will eventually get clogged and therefore not allow a good flow of water to pass through its filter media.
Sponge filters are probably the one type of filter looked down upon by many aquarium enthusiasts. Generally considered a secondary filter and used mainly as a backup, sponge filters are in fact quite efficient, providing excellent mechanical filtration as well as biological. But because the debris gets trapped in the sponge, without proper cleaning they will eventually get clogged.
When cleaning any type of filter, it is crucial to remember that not only do you want the filter media clean, you also do not want to kill off any beneficial bacteria colonies that have over time grown in the filter media. Therefore, never ever wash your sponge filter with direct tap water. The chlorine in the tap water is meant to kill any microganisms and using it on the sponge will immediately destroy all bacterial colonies that you took so long to cultivate.
The best water to wash the sponge in is the fish tank water from where it came from. How you do this is by arranging for your filter cleaning to coincide with your water change. After you have siphoned out some of the water from your fish tank, use it to wash the sponge in. By doing it this way, the colonies of bacteria will not be killed.
You do not need to scrub the sponge when cleaning it. Too much scrubbing will spoil the outer layer of the sponge and over time will reduce its filtration capabilities. What you can do is just squeeze it a couple of times in the siphoned water to dislodge large debris from it. After that, just swirl the sponge a little through the water to release loose bedris that still might be sticking on.Sponge cleaning should be done no more than once in a month. If however you do notice that your sponge filters are getting clogged too often, you will have to check why this is happening as the cause of it may be determental to the fish health. The two main reasons why they might be clogged is from excess food and fish waste. If it is due to excess food, you might be feeding the fish a little too much and you should reduce the feeding so that the excess food does not riase the nitrate levels in the tank.
If however it is due to too much fish waste, then you might have too many fish for the volume of your aquarium to support and you should think about getting a larger tank or simply reducing the quantity of fish you have in that aquarium.These are the right methods of cleaning and caring for your sponge filter.
By following these effective cleaning methods, your aquarium will always be healthy and clean and at the same time ensure that your sponge filter function effectively for a long time to come.

External canister filters are recommended for larger aquariums since these filters are apt for cleaning larger aquariums with more fish. An under gravel filter is not recommended for large aquariums since large aquariums generally have a bigger fish load which can cause the plates of the under gravel filter to clog. Under gravel filters require regular maintenance and siphoning the gravel is an important part of maintaining an under gravel filter.
Glass cleaners are required to clean the external glass of the aquarium and care should be taken that the glass cleaning liquid does not mix with the aquarium water while cleaning since this can prove toxic to the fish.

The Internal Filtration System
These are used for the salt water & fresh water aquariums. Usually, this tank works in the following manner:
1. The salt water aquariums contain an internal tube that allows the water to flow down in to a sump tank.

3. All the water in the fish tank is made to pass through certain kind of foam.

5. This water is then finally pumped back to the top in the main tank.

Aquariums, just like any other part of the environment, need to be kept considerably clean, for aquatic life to keep thriving in them. Many people dislike the idea of having to manually clean the inside of a freshwater aquarium every now and then, so manufacturers have provided them with freshwater aquarium filters that can be installed to do the initial cleaning of the fish tank for them.
How is the water in a fish tank filtered?
An aquarium produces waste materials for a number of reasons. One reason is the biological reactions that take place in the water; these could simply take form of uneaten food that was left to spoil, or by waste materials of the fish themselves. But whatever these waste sources are, there are usually three general ways to remove and clean off these waste materials out of your fish tank.
When we speak of the natural processes involved in filtering the water inside a fish tank, we talk about biological filtration. Beneficial bacteria is the most common and effective agent of this filtering process, being able to break down dangerous toxic materials into less toxic substances.
Synthetic materials that are used to combine with waste materials are the work of a chemical filtration process. These waste materials react with the synthetic material, dissolving it and transforming it into a form that can be collected and thrown afterwards. One good material used for chemical filtration is activated carbon.
Manually trapping solid waste materials in a filter media is a form of mechanical filtration. Although this method does not involve dissolving substances or breaking down materials, it is an effective means of filtering out solid waste out of the fish tank. One thing though… collected material from the filter must be periodically removed by hand, so that it can continue to clean the water continuously.
What are the filters available out there then?
Fresh water aquarium filters are commonly purchased at your local hobby stores, and there are quite a number of these filters that can provide you with one or more of the filtering processes explained above. Take a look at some of the filters used in aquariums.
Power filters are the most common filters used in fish tanks, mostly because they’re affordable, are readily available, and quite efficient. They’re quite easy to install and use, and maintenance is relatively simple too. This is one of the filters that can actually use all three filtration methods, depending on how you customize the power filter’s settings.
Canister filters are among the most powerful filters that you can use. This is because they force the water through the filter media, not just letting it flow through, making the filtration process far more effective in terms of filtration amount per time interval. One disadvantage, though, is that power filters are somewhat difficult to maintain.
Corner filters were the forerunners of the modern filters that are used today. Their basic function is to pass the water through it, and with a proper filter media installed inside, filter the water appropriately. They are very cheap, and are commonly used for hospital tanks. The advent of more effective ways of filtering made the corner filter a lot less popular than what it was before.
Sponge filters, as the name suggests, make use of a sponge for beneficial bacteria to colonize into, setting the filter for biological filtration. They can also, however, filter larger solid particles using the very same sponge. Other versions of the sponge filter include the use of two sponges at the same time, for convenience purposes.
