How Aquarium Tank Filters Work
When setting up an aquarium one of the necessary components is a filter, but many people don’t really give the filter much thought. Knowing that you need a filter is the first step, but understanding how aquarium tank filters work and what they actually do will help tremendously in deciding on a filter for your tank.
In short, aquarium filters maintain the water quality in the tank. They do this by removing particles such as food, plant pieces, feces, and other detritus from your water. Filters also remove chemicals and toxins such as ammonia and nitrite from the water. If left to build up these would lead to the death of your fish.
It is important to note that having a good filter doesn’t eliminate the need for regular water changes in your aquarium (roughly 10-20% of the water should be changed every two weeks). Even the best filtration systems cannot remove all water pollution, so the periodic water changes are still necessary. The flip side is true, too, which is that regular water changes by themselves are not enough to keep a tank healthy, and some type of filter must be in place.
A good aquarium filter will provide three types of filtration – mechanical, chemical, and biological. Each element is described below:
Mechanical filtration – This refers to the filtering out of particles in the water, such as the plant scraps, uneaten food, feces, and any other “stuff” that may get stirred up in the tank. This type of filtration is done with a sponge, floss, a coarse pad, or any material that water can pass through, but larger bits and particles cannot. Many filters use an easily replaceable cartridge for the mechanical filtration. When it becomes clogged and water is not flowing freely, the cartridge is simply thrown out and replaced.
Chemical filtration – As the name implies, this involves the removal of chemicals and other (non-particulate) toxins from the water. These include ammonia, nitrite, and other chemicals. This is most commonly done by using activated carbon or charcoal. The carbon absorbs gasses and other dissolved solids, so odors and colors are eliminated from the water. Other resins can be added to the filter that specifically target ammonia removal. This chemical filtration is important because it takes care of things that you can’t see and that if allowed to build up, can cause serious issues for the fish.
Biological filtration – Perhaps the most overlooked but extremely important type of filtration is biological. Many novice aquarium owners do not even know that this is going on, but if it wasn’t occurring their fish would never survive. Biological filtration is accomplished by large amounts of beneficial bacteria in your aquarium filter as well as in the tank itself. The bacteria “eat up”, or metabolize, much of the negative chemicals such as ammonia and nitrite, and convert them into beneficial compounds like nitrate (which feeds live plants). Much of the biological activity occurs in the gravel substrate of the aquarium and indeed this is the reason undergravel filters are the best for biological filtration.
None of the three filtration elements can work independently; all three must be present in a properly maintained aquarium. Therefore, never ever wash your sponge filter with direct tap water. The chlorine in the tap water is meant to kill any microganisms and using it on the sponge will immediately destroy all bacterial colonies that you took so long to cultivate.
The best water to wash the sponge in is the fish tank water from where it came from. How you do this is by arranging for your filter cleaning to coincide with your water change. After you have siphoned out some of the water from your fish tank, use it to wash the sponge in. By doing it this way, the colonies of bacteria will not be killed.
You do not need to scrub the sponge when cleaning it. Too much scrubbing will spoil the outer layer of the sponge and over time will reduce its filtration capabilities. What you can do is just squeeze it a couple of times in the siphoned water to dislodge large debris from it. After that, just swirl the sponge a little through the water to release loose bedris that still might be sticking on.Sponge cleaning should be done no more than once in a month. If however you do notice that your sponge filters are getting clogged too often, you will have to check why this is happening as the cause of it may be determental to the fish health. The two main reasons why they might be clogged is from excess food and fish waste. If it is due to excess food, you might be feeding the fish a little too much and you should reduce the feeding so that the excess food does not riase the nitrate levels in the tank.
If however it is due to too much fish waste, then you might have too many fish for the volume of your aquarium to support and you should think about getting a larger tank or simply reducing the quantity of fish you have in that aquarium.These are the right methods of cleaning and caring for your sponge filter.

Power Filters
This is the type of filter favored by most fish breeders. A powerhead pumps water through a series of filters that clears of the water. They are meant for a well stocked medium sized tank and works quite efficiently especially when well maintained. They do not need too much maintenance, a monthly cleaning schedule is sufficient. They are not that cheap but will make up for the initial cost in the long run.
Canister Filters
The Ferrari of the aquarium world. These filter water through a series of filter media located in a canister that is placed outside of the tank, usually below it. They are meant for medium to large tanks with as many fish as you can stock up because they are highly efficient. Canister filters need very little maintenance, usually three times a year is more than enough. The downside is that they are expensive but if you can afford the initial start up cost, then they will save you a whole lot of time and money in the long run.

What I’ve Learned About (Fish Tank) Filters
Filters are not the sexiest part of your fish tank; most of the time, they’re the part you’d just like to forget about. But we all know that choosing the right filter, and maintaining it properly, is the key to the health of your aquarium. So let’s look at the three types of filtration systems that the average fresh water fish tank can use:
First, there’s biological filtration – that’s what we call all the helpful little bacteria which break down ammonia and nitrite into less toxic nitrate.
These bacteria need lots of oxygen, and a surface to cling to, whether that’s plants, filter media, gravel, or live rock and sand (that is, rock that’s inhabited by microorganisms). Remember that antibiotics will kill good bacteria as well as bad, so move a sick fish to a separate hospital tank before you treat it!
Biological filtration alone is enough only if you have a very small number of fish in a large water volume – if you want a lively tank, you’re going to need one or both of the other types of filter.
The second type is chemical filtration, which uses chemical reactions to remove waste substances from the water. Activated carbon, Algone (plant fibers), and zeolite clay (the type used in cat litter) can be used, and each type has their advantages and disadvantages. Carbon can sometimes leach phosphates into your tank, which promotes algae growth – look for brands that are “low ash” or “acid washed” to avoid this. Zeolite is good at removing ammonia, but can interfere with the establishment of a good nitrogen cycle, so be careful about using it in a new tank.
The third type is mechanical filtration – that’s just your basic porous filter that catches solid particles before they can go back in the water. This type doesn’t do anything about liquid or gaseous chemical wastes. These work best if the filters in them are replaced or thoroughly rinsed every two to four weeks, otherwise they get clogged, or the wastes will decay in the filter until they’re small enough to get washed back into the tank. Remember that a mechanical filter won’t affect wastes that have settled onto your gravel; you’ll need a siphon or vacuum to get rid of those.
Personally, my favorite type of mechanical filter is bonded floss – it doesn’t get clogged as easy as the other types, and you can change part of it at a time to preserve your beneficial bacteria colonies. You can also get loose floss, sponge, or paper cartridge filters. You just want to pick one that traps enough solids to keep the water clear, without getting plugged too often.
