When you are just starting to have fish in the home you obviously have a lot to learn to care about them properly and make sure that they survive for as long as their full life span is and not cause harm to them by wrong ways because of ignorance. There is a wide choice of fish that you can have in a fresh water tank and it should not be a problem to select some of these for your tank. So go ahead and start your aquarium with a fresh water one and get the suitable fish that you want for it. This is a much easier bet to take care of and a wise one to start your hobby with.
1. Some points to keep in mind for a fresh water aquarium
Before you get your fresh water aquarium you would have to do some planning and bear some points in your mind. The first and foremost one is to decide where you will be keeping the fresh water aquarium in your home. The aquarium should not be kept near units for heating and cooling in the house, nor near doors and windows. You should locate an area where the temperature remains more or less the same every day and there should be sufficient sunlight light and also light indoors for the fish.
After locating a suitable spot in your home for the aquarium you can get yourself a fresh water one. It is always better to start with a small one and after you get the hang of it you can go in for a bigger one. Get a proper stand for the aquarium so that you can put it on the stand and then fill it with water and everything else that goes into it. If you have a suitable table you could place the aquarium on it, but whatever you decide to use as a stand make sure that it is sturdy and can take the weight of the aquarium with the water, the fish and the accessories in it. It should also be quite firm and not sway around with the weight on it.
2. Accessories for the fresh water aquarium
The aquarium has a lot more accessories that will be required for it to function perfectly, like the system for filtering the water which should be as per the size of the aquarium, this will need suitable filters, lighting for the aquarium, gravel, plants, several species of fish, food and medicines for the fish. You could add on any other accessories to beautify the aquarium also and this is according to your own choice. Some fish may need a heater to keep the water warm also.
3. Keep fish that can live compatibly together
Another very important aspect of keeping fish together is that you have to make sure that they require the same kind of environment, water temperature and feed and do not antagonize each other, but are able to live together harmoniously.

Fish Tank Cleaning – How to Properly Clean a Freshwater Fish Tank

Cleaning a fish tank is an important part of owning an aquarium. Your fish need a clean environment to live if you want them to stay healthy and happy. Excess food and fish feces build up over time, which eventually turn into harmful ammonia, so it’s important to keep your tank clean not only for its appearance, but for the health of your fish.
Getting on a good fish tank cleaning schedule will help you avoid algae build up and make it easier to clean the tank each time that you do. You can do a routine clean up in about a half an hour. Cleaning your tank on a weekly basis is the best way to stay on top of the grime and keep your fish healthy.
Many people mistakenly believe that you have to drain the whole tank and replace the water each time you clean the take. Actually, completely cleaning an aquarium can be harmful to the fish. As the fish live in the tank, good bacteria that cuts down on disease starts to grow in the tank. When a tank is cleaned from top to bottom, you remove these good bacteria, putting your fish in harm’s way.
You need to regularly replace 10 to 50 percent of the water that is in the tank on a regular basis. Most people do 25 percent. This way you’ll be able to add fresh water without completely removing the good bacteria. If there are algae on the sides of the tank you can use a scrubber but don’t remove all of the algae because it is natural to their environment and very healthy for them.
Make sure to check the filter for debris, but don’t replace it each time you clean. Good bacteria build up in the filter as well so you’ll only want to replace it when you absolutely have to. Just use a clean bucket full of chlorine-free water and rub your hands across the filter several times to get the bulk sludge and slime off, that’s it!
When decorative items become stained you can remove them from the tank and soak them in a 10 percent bleach solution for 15 minutes, use a brush and be sure to rinse them thoroughly before replacing them! If you do not rinse them thoroughly you could easily kill all of your fish!
Finally, replace the filter, the decorative items and add new water, remembering to use some type of water treatment solution to remove all chlorine. It’s also a good idea to add a little conditioning salt to prevent disease.

Different Types of Sand Available For A Freshwater Aquarium

During the preparation of your freshwater aquarium, choosing sand as your substrate is not much of a dilemma. The biggest reason, of course, is the fact that sand is the most common substrate in the wild freshwater systems like lakes, ponds and streams.
As such, most fish are naturally more familiar with it than with any other kind like rocks and stones and some plain underwater soil. Aside from this, certain species of fish with delicate barbells will not have any problems digging around. Some others actually dig and hide under the sand.
For one, sand has many advantages than the other substrate choices for your aquarium. Because of its being ever-present in many places, fish are naturally familiar with it. They are the best for fishes with delicate barbells and for those who are natural burrowers and diggers.
Inside your freshwater aquarium, sand harbors the useful bacteria that help process the whole ecosystem inside. (Gravel has less surface areas compared to it.) They are also perfect for growing your tank’s underwater plants.
Depending on the kind of fish you have, sand is good lining for the bottom of a fish tank, especially for those with delicate types of fish. There are many species who like to hide and burrow into the sand. They cannot do that in gravel.
there are many advantages of having sand in your fish tank like it makes setting up your decorations and plants nuch easier than with gravel. Sand is not just the ideal medium for your aquatic plants, but it also harbors the useful bacteria needed for the whole tank ecosystem. Gravel has less surface area than sand and that is why it is a less favorable surface for good bacteria to form on.
Advantages
In the natural world, sand is the bottom surface of most fish habitats that include ponds, rivers, and lakes. This makes it more natural for your fish and for breeders, make a note that some species will only breed in sand filled aquariums.
Some species of fish even eat a little sand to help in their digestion. Needless to say, sand is also ideal for the many species of aquatic plants.
Precautions
However, when using sand for your aquariums substrate let’s review a common mistake. This mistake is not to control the thickness of your sand layer. Fine sand has a tendency to have “dead pockets”, which are those areas without any water circulation and thus no oxygen circulation .
biological and ecological filtration cannot happen in sand that does not ‘breathe’ so it becomes oxygen poor. If you want your sand substrate thick, be sure to disturb it regularly. You can have some animals or fish that can do that for you – dig tunnels, burrow, and generally move the sand around.
Types
The importance of the choice of types of sand for your aquarium has been a source of wisdom among long-time aquarium owners for many decades . There are several considerations and you may need more than one to balance your choice.
One important factor is the mineral content of the sand which can affect the water chemistry. The color and the size of the sand grains are also important.
Some fish species are shy and they could be less stressed (threatened) if a brightly-colored sand is changed into something darker. Smoothe rounded sand and fine sand is best if your fish have soft bellies or like to bite at the sand.
Large aquarium shops usually have at least six different types of sand to choose from. Black Tahitian moon sand, Aragonite sand, Coral Sand, Black Beauty Sand which is also known as powdered iron slag, and the popular silica sand which is also known as blasting sand and play sand.
Silica sand
This is the sand used by the sand blasting industry. Relatively cheap (around 100 lbs. for ), it is pale tan and the texture is extremely fine.
Black beauty
Black beauty sand is not found in nature – it is a powdered iron slag. It is also used by the sand-blasting industry.
This type of sand will definitely alter the chemistry inside your aquarium. What’s more, powdered iron slag may have sharp edges which are not ideal for those fish species that continuously sift sand.
Play sand
Play sand is more diverse in grain size and color than silica sand. It is also darker than silica and has much clay in it.
It is cheap, and is sold in large quantities for use in filling up sand boxes. It can also be bought from home supply stores because it is also used in making brickwork.
Coral sand
This is usually used in aquariums to keep the pH value alkaline, and the water hard. It is more expensive than silica sand, iron slag, and play sand, but cheaper than aragonite.
It is made from crushed corals, this is usually white with a diverse grain size as well.
Aragonite
This is one of the most expensive of all types of aquarium sand. It is available in various colors and grain sizes for differet applications.
Like the coral sand, the aragonite can also help in adjusting the pH value and the water hardness in the aquarium.
Tahitian moon sand
Another expensive variety of sand is the famous black Tahitian moon sand. Beautiful by itself, the black Tahitian moon sand can make your colorful fish even be more showy because their colors are enhanced when placed in contrast against the black sand.
The black Tahitian moon sand is not iron slag.
Setup
As with most things (including sand), anything introduced into your freshwater aquarium needs to be cleaned and free from substances (and live things) that will pollute your tank.
The best way to do this is to thoroughly clean the sand by passing it through water to remove the debris and other detritus (living or dead) that will dirty up your aquarium.
Maintenance
It is good policy to vacuum the sand every 2 to 4 weeks, and siphon off floating debris. If you don’t have animals to do it for you, manually churn the sand around 4 to 6 times a year. Churning releases trapped gas (and wastes) under the inert sand.
Move the stones and other décor (and the fish, if possible) and vacuum the water. Turn off the pumps and filters first before churning and wait for everything to settle down before turning them on again.
Choosing the right sand for your freshwater aquarium is like choosing the right landscape for your house. It will not only please your eyes but it certainly helps the lives of your fish.

Fishes make adorable pets. Fish aquariums do not take much space in the house. The freshwater fish tanks make the room in which they are kept look more attractive. Fishes are docile creatures and do not any fuss compared to other pets. Keeping fishes at home also helps in improving heart rate. Fishes in freshwater tanks are good for heart patients. The movement of fish in the aquarium fish tanks has a soothing effect on the home owners.
There are a few considerations which one needs to keep in the back of mind before purchasing freshwater fish tanks. The first consideration is the size of the tank. The size of the tank is dependant on the area available in one’s home to keep the tank. Today the aquarium fish tanks usually come equipped with a light and automatic filter attached. Some tanks also come with an in-built heater unit. When one is keeping tropical fishes then one needs a heater. Most of these fishes also need sunlight as they need to absorb vitamin D from it. Since sunlight can’t be produced at home, an alternative is to have an ultra violet light on top of the freshwater fish tank. To maintain a good habitat for the fish one needs to monitor the condition of this equipment from time to time.
A popular model of a freshwater fish tank which is selling like hot cakes is the nano cube model. The tank is fashioned out like a cube and comes with a whole range of fish tank accessories. It comes with a three stage filtration which is integrated into the structure of the tank. In some tanks this unit is well hidden while in others it is not. The tanks are equipped with an output return nozzle which helps in regulating the direction of the flow. The other functions of a filtration unit apart from cleaning the water to skim the water. Skimming the water helps in improving the quality of water as stagnant water is not healthy for fishes. There is a chemically activated carbon bag which kills harmful bacteria in the water.
For fishes which do not heat to survive, one can go for fan cooled canopy tanks. In this system the fans draw out the warm air produced by the led lamps in the tanks. This model of aquarium fish tanks is easy to maintain and is completely tension free. Ideally one needs the change the water in tank every fortnight. The cube tanks also come up energy saving led lamps which provide the inner glow in the tank. The tank capacity of freshwater fish tanks is twelve gallon. The ideal dimensions are, 15.8″ (L) x 13.8″ (W) x 14.8″ (H).
One will come across tanks which are bigger than this as well as tanks which are smaller than this. There are websites, where one can choose from a wide range of aquarium fish tanks. Since carrying freshwater fish tanks is not easy, it is wiser to have them delivered home. This is all the more reason why one should buy freshwater fish tanks on the net. Reputed firms which sell these tanks online also sell a whole range of fish tank accessories.

Choosing Freshwater Invertebrates For Your Aquarium That Will Not Cause Death
Posted: Apr 26, 2010 |Comments: 0

]]>
The author identifies certain freshwater invertebrates species you can use in your aquarium and some you certainly cannot. These include snails and shrimp and if you do not make the correct decision there will be a lot of dead creatures and missing plants!
Shrimps are a popular choice amongst the invertebrates when it comes to adding them to your freshwater aquarium. But you have to be careful as depending on their size and/or nature they may either be eaten by the fish in the tank or they themselves may become the predator and eat your fish!
Suitable for Community Tanks
Bamboo shrimp are great for community aquariums because they don’t have claws, they have fans. And they only reach two to three inches in length so are unlikely to be eaten by smaller fish but think about how big your fish will get.
Their fans are used to collect food from the environment so they need a water flow to enable them to feed and therefore your aquarium needs to have a filter in it with plants and rocks nearby so they can access the water exuding from the outlet.
Food wise, if a bamboo shrimp is noticed using its fans on the bottom of the tank then it means there isn’t enough food for it. One way of ensuring they get the food is to use a syringe to squirt it near their fans. Food for the syringe includes daphnia, algae wafers, flake food and young brine shrimp.
Amongst the snails, Pomacea bridgesii is a good selection for a community tank but you need to make sure that this is the snail you have purchased. If you buy the wrong species your plants may disappear very quickly!
Not suitable for Community Tanks
Long arm shrimps are species of Macrobrachium and some of them can grow to over twelve inches, are territorial and aggressive and will eat most things they can catch so are definitely not suitable for a community tank. As a warning, look out for this species as they can be offered to aquarists for their aquariums.
Snails: There are species of snails that can grow up to 6 inches wide and clearly will not be ideally suitable for a community aquarium. Pomacea canaliculata (Apple snail) fits into this category and should be avoided, unless of course you have a tank big enough. You cannot miss their eggs, they are bright orange in color.
And you may well find that you have hitch-hiker snails. These are small snails that get a ride on the plants that you buy for your aquarium. Be warned though. They can multiply rapidly (threefold in a week?) and give you water quality problems due to their waste, so check your plants before putting them into your tank. Some folk just squish them against the glass and let their fish eat them!
At the end of the day you have to make specific choices regarding the inclusion of freshwater invertebrates into your aquarium.

Planning is Key to the Success of Your First Home Freshwater Aquarium

Having a home freshwater aquarium can be a wonderful and exciting hobby for anyone to take on. If done right, it can provide years and years of enjoyment, but done wrong, it can be a painful source of frustration until you eventually give up
The most important thing you can do to ensure the success of your venture is to take the time to properly plan. Buying an aquarium should not be an impulse purchase. It doesn’t have to be a long, drawn out process either, but if you rush it, the result is likely failure.
So where do you begin? All of the points listed are not really in any order, as they are interrelated. Rather, all of the considerations below are what go into “step one” of buying your first fish tank.
Size of the Tank – Many newcomers to the hobby get very excited and want to do something grand with their first aquarium. Maybe they have seen the huge tank at the dentist’s office and thought about how great that would look in their house. They fail to realize that the expense, upkeep, and demands of a 200+ gallon tank are way beyond that of the beginner. Some people take the opposite approach and think that a 5-8 gallon tank will be easy, but then are disappointed to find out that they can only safely keep a 2-5 fish in it because it’s too small. A good target size for your first aquarium is 20-40 gallons.
Location – It’s not just important in real estate, the location of your aquarium within your home is crucial. First of all, those things are heavy! A 30 gallon tank with stand, gravel, and water will weigh about 400 pounds, so choose your spot wisely. Do not put it in direct sunlight as temperature control and algae will be issues. Also avoid high traffic areas in your home as that placement can stress out the fish in your aquarium.
Get the Right Accessories – Make sure that you get the right filter size. If you just grab one because it’s on sale or a friend gave it to you, it may not be rated for the size tank you have and that will mean trouble. A proper fitting hood and stand are important, too. The bottom of the tank isn’t “just rocks” either, so do a little research as to the right/wrong gravel before you fill the tank.
Picking out Fish for Your Tank – This is one of the most overlooked parts of the planning process. In their excitement, many people go to the pet store and start picking out whatever fish looks neat, is the prettiest, or just seems cool, without any forethought as to how the fish will live together. This is very important! It is a terrible feeling to wake up one day to find a bunch of your fish gone because you failed to find out that the cool looking Oscar you just bought will eat anything that fits in its mouth!
Time Commitment – If you set up your freshwater aquarium right from the start, you shouldn’t encounter many problems, but it doesn’t run itself. There will be some maintenance involved and please be sure that you are willing and able to do it before you make the investment in the tank, gear, and fish.
Once you take the time to make the important decisions up front, the success of your home aquarium is almost guaranteed. The time invested in the planning stage will pay off in a big way with the years of enjoyment that you and your family will get from your fish tank.

Be Responsible
If you dream of having an aquarium at home it entails a number of responsibilities to deal with. It can be tedious and challenging at first because of some routines to follow but you will get used to it once a good habit has been established. Be ready with what you are going to do daily such as feeding the fish, cleaning fish tank at regular intervals, checking any signs of sickness, giving medicines to weak fish to avoid contaminating others are some of the routine roles you have to undergone. So be ready to take actions after all this your aquarium, if you can’t handle these things better not to start making an aquarium at all.
Get some Information
Do some research before buying anything and get some basic information on freshwater aquarium. Learn from their challenges so that you will not commit the same mistakes as they did. Absorb every detail that you can get from and be able to apply it to your own aquarium set up.
Build your aquarium first
Make your aquarium first before buying any fish to put on it. Get all the necessary equipments ready such as filters and water tank. Water ph level must be treated at once to maintain the desired water chemistry set up.
Right Choice of Fish
There is a wide variety of freshwater aquarium fish to choose from but proper considerations must be made before picking one variety to put unto your aquarium. Choose a fish that matches your set up and carefully study all of those affecting your water tank. Is your fish tank large enough to accommodate a number of fish? While you may want to put more variety of fish and yet your tank is not big enough to accommodate all of them it is suggested that you prepare the tank first then you can start putting a good quantity of fish that can be readily accommodated by the fish tank or else they can easily die of suffocation. Is the pH level good enough for the fish to survive? Always check the acidity of the water before putting any kind of fish for them to live longer and healthier. Always do the routine check yourself if you want to add or buy more fish for your aquarium.
Always do the Maintenance Work
After you have understood all the necessary things to do how to make a freshwater aquarium the most challenging part would be is to maintain how the aquarium will last longer. Aquarium maintenance can be tiring because you have to set aside time and effort to do the cleaning of fish tank and treating the water level. This job entails self discipline and self direction or else your efforts will be wasted. If you are not going to maintain it consistently the tendencies are higher rate of fish death thus you lose your passion, time and resources. In order to keep your freshwater aquarium alive a good attitude of diligence is needed to keep you focused on your goals of maintaining a healthy freshwater aquarium though careful and consistent fish tank maintenance.
