The decision has been made and the tank has been bought and kept in its place of honour. The question now arises what exactly is it that you need to put in this tank to allow an ecosystem of sorts to flourish.
The substrate is essential to the tank and comes right at the beginning, or in this case right at the bottom of the tank. While deciding between small and large sized substrates, there are several things to keep in mind but do remember that the smaller stuff is more liked by the fish. Sand and small rocks are a cheap if not free part of small substrate and easy to get. They also help dressing up the tank. But if your fish pick this stuff up and keep it in their mouth, which they tend to do with the smaller substrate, expect irritation in their mouth.
Rocks, pebbles and things like these form the medium-sized substrate and is often seen in tanks. Big substrate means things like river rocks- rarely to be seen in freshwater tanks. Sometimes a bottom layer of big substrate gives the tank a grand look but this can trap food particles that float down – contaminating the water and potentially hurting the fish.
Before you add any new substrates, consider the affect they can have on the water. Crushed coral has the potential to increase the Ph levels in water. Substrate can also affect the fish in other ways.
Certain substrates are to be avoided in your freshwater aquarium setup as they damage the water. These include dolomite. geodes, granite, lava rock, limestone, onyx, quartz, sandstone, shells and slate.
To figure out if other things that you would like to add to the tank – which may not have been purchased for it specifically – you should run a couple of tests. One way is to put lots of drops of vinegar on the rocks or the gravel that you plan to place in the tank. If it creates some foam or fizz or has an unexpected reaction, you should not use it. This is because it contains calcium that affects the water.
A second way is to place the substrate material in a bucket of water that is to be used in your freshwater aquarium and run a test for pH balance and hardness. Let the material be in the bucket for a week and if you see no major change then this is usable.
A variety of testing kits are available online or at pet stores. You must know which ones are needed and which just a waste of your money.
Unusual pH levels lead to stress for your fish and their death so a pH Levels Test Kit is a must. If you observe pH ‘drifting’ or unexpected changes, check the Carbonate Hardness (KH) levels of the water.
Ammonia levels need to be high during the freshwater aquarium setup period and not later but this can happen due to dirty water, filters, medicines or even overstocking of the tank. That’s why an Ammonia Test Kit is necessary.
Make sure that the nitrite levels are less than 1.0. Nitrite is a toxic byproduct left after organic waste breaks down.
While nitrate is a medium-level poison for fish, high levels can still be damaging and it needs to be maintained at or below 300 ppm (parts per million).
In a freshwater aquarium setup most owners have several things they would like to plug in. Considering that this involves a mix of water and electricity, invest in a power strip that is waterproof and offers protection against surges.

So you want to have your own freshwater tropical aquarium fish, but don’t know where to start? Luckily, I’ll explain the steps you need to take in order to setup a fish tank and select a species of fish that will adapt to the environment you have envisaged.
There are two types of tropical fish, and they are saltwater tropical fish, and freshwater tropical fish. Here I’ll be explaining the ways to setup a tank containing freshwater tropical fish.
Aquarium Cycling
Before putting your pet tropical fish in your fish tank, your fish tank needs to go through a phase known as aquarium cycling. It’s important this phase is undertaken before you put your fish in your fish tank, otherwise you may run into a variety of problems. I know it can be tempting to get straight into it and immediately put your fish in the tank once there’s water in there, but hang on for just a moment!
The Nitrogen cycle is the first phrase of aquarium cycling, and involves ridding the water of all the excess nitrogen that it has before the water is deemed fit for animal life. Sounds a little complex? Don’t worry. Your best way to prepare the water in your fish tank so that you can place tropical fish in it is by planting your tank. This involves putting lots of nice sea plants within your tank that help to rid excess nitrogen and make the water suitable for your fish to swim in.
The next thing you’ll need is a filter that is able to absorb foreign materials and particles from the water, ensuring that it stays fresh and recycled at all times. You may also consider purchasing an air stone, which come in addition to your air filter. This will allow your fish tank to display various bubble effects.
In terms of selecting your actual fish tank, any tank should do unless you want to customize your aquarium to a specific species of tropical freshwater fish. Speaking to your pet shop owner is a good idea as they’ll be able to help you select a fish tank specific to your needs.
In terms of selecting the actual species of freshwater tropical fish, you need to be mindful that some species don’t get along with one another. It’s not uncommon for some species to bully, or even eat other species. The last thing you want to do is spend a small fortune acquiring the rarest and most exotic of freshwater tropical fish only to have them eaten by some antisocial tropical fish breed who doesn’t think they’re as beautiful as you do!
Once your fish tank is setup, and you have selected the types of fish you wish to place in your tank, all that remains is literally putting them in! Be mindful that feeding patterns and lighting can affect the way your fish live and behave. Be aware of potential fish diseases as well as good and bad types of fish food that you can feed specific species of tropical fish.

Maintaining the Ecosystem of a Freshwater Aquarium

]]>
When most people think about an aquarium, they think only of the fish in the tank. It is seen as a glass box filled with water, some fish, and maybe a plant or two. However, successful aquarium hobbyists look at things a bit differently.
The people that have the most success with their tanks take into account the whole ecosystem of a freshwater aquarium. They understand that the aquarium is not just water, fish, and plants, but rather the whole thing is one single living entity.
Approaching the set up and maintenance of a freshwater aquarium in this way requires you to treat each component like a piece of the overall puzzle. When it is time to add some fish, stop and think about how that may affect the other fish, the plants, and the water quality. Everything that gets added or taken out of an established aquarium can have a ripple effect that needs to be considered.
A healthy aquatic ecosystem will have the right balance of fish and plants. It will be getting the proper amount of light. The filter will be keeping dirt in check and the nitrogen cycle will be operating smoothly.
The nitrogen cycle is an often overlooked but crucial aspect of a healthy aquarium. The key to the cycle is the beneficial bacteria that live in the gravel substrate of the tank as well as in the filter. These bacteria “eat” the fish waste and leftover food converting ammonia and nitrites into nitrate that feeds the plants. The plants use the nitrate and with proper lighting, photosynthesize, thus releasing oxygen into the water. The fish use the oxygen to breathe and they in turn release carbon dioxide that the plants use in photosynthesis.
Knowing about this cycle and the importance of keeping it in balance can then guide your decisions as to what to add to the tank. It should be obvious that it would be potentially very bad to add too many fish at one time, as it would create too much waste, the bacteria couldn’t metabolize it all, and the ammonia levels in the water could spike. A sudden rise in ammonia levels could kill both the new and the old fish, so it is of utmost importance to do things slowly when it comes to adding fish to the tank.
Every inhabitant in the tank uses one substance to create another that is in turn used by a different tank inhabitant and so on through the cycle. So, in a healthy aquarium ecosystem, all organisms are in balance, the water chemistry is optimal, and the whole aquarium thrives as one.

How Do You Deal With A Freshwater Aquarium That Is Cloudy?

It is only natural for a beginner to be scared to see a cloudy freshwater tank. In the first place, what is expected to be seen is clear water with beautiful aquatic displays and colorful fish swimming back and forth not some kind of dirt that obscures the supposed attractive serenity inside. There is nothing to be worried about for the most part but of course, it is certainly something that must not be ignored. Clean water is important in an aquarium. Although generally speaking, cloudy aquarium water does not create a harmful environment for your fish, but it certainly destroys the appeal. We naturally want the water clear so we can enjoy watching the view inside. Cloudy aquarium water can arise from a number of reasons such as annoying algae, some residues from the decorations like the gravel, or excess food
there can be several reasons that a tanks water can become cloudy and an expert will have many possible answers for the tank owner, as there are many different causes. the waters color and conditions in the tank determine the possible cause.
What causes white or grayish water?
Gravel Residue
When you fill your freshwater aquarium with water the first time and after a couple of hours your tanks water turns cloudy, the gravel that you put in your fish tank may not have been washed thoroughly. when the water runs clean into the drain from rinsing the gravel, then you can use it in the tank. It is not surprising for new rocks and decorations to cause cloudy water even if they were rinsed prior to placing them in the tank. When they get soaked in the tank, tight dirt that was not washed away by rinsing, loosens up. You can get all of the dirt loose by soaking the gravel for 2 to 3 days in a separate container, and then give them another rinsing before you place them in the tank
Dissolved Elements
What happens if washing the gravel doesn’t solve the problem? As mentioned above, there are several answers as there are several causes. So if thorough gravel cleaning does not solve the problem, the second most likely cause is dissolved elements such as heavy metals, silicates or phosphates. Test the water to determine the pH level and if it is found to be high, water conditioners can generally solve the problem.
Reverse Osmosis (RO) may be chosen because not only does it help in resolving cloudy water issues, but if the water contains toxic elements. Using an reverse osmosis unit purifies and softens the water.
Bacteria Bloom
There are instances when after the aquarium is set up, water remains clear for days, sometimes for several weeks. everything is going great, then out of nowwhere the tank water becomed cloudy. When this happens, the gravel is not the cause anymore but bacterial bloom. While doing your research prior to your purchase of the tank and the rest of the equipment, you surely have read something about ‘cycling’ the tank. cloudy water is the typical, expected result of a new fish tank that is being cycled for the first time. This is because after several days or weeks or even months, bacterial colonies begin to start that will clear waste from the water. Once the cycle takes place, the cloudiness clears itself.
New fish tank keepers sometimes tend to panic upon seeing the water in the tank turn cloudy. Our advice is whatever the cause, never panic. Instead find what’s causing it because that can always be resolved. Keeping the aquarium free from debris such as decaying plants and excess food, regular gravel vacuuming and doing partial water changes are all steps to maintain cleanliness of the tank and will resolve most bacterial bloom cases. Flocculates, sold at fish shops, are also used as water clearers as they make debris bunch together which then are cleared by filters. So be sure to regularly clean your filters too which will help maintain their efficiency.
What causes green water?
Needless of an explanation, green water is caused by algae growth. The difficult part comes in its removal especially if you do not know what’s causing the growth.
Excess light is the most probable cause and the cure is easy. When a freshwater aquarium is placed in a spot where it gets direct sunlight like in front of a window or when tank lights are on for too long, or the tank lights are far too strong, it promotes algae growth. Simply move the tank out of direct sunlight or lessen the time the lights are on and that will do it. If it is not possible to move the tank, try a UV sterilizer to control the algae.
Too much nutrients such as phosphates and nitrates also makes a good reason for algae growth. a water change will provide the owner with a quick fix but the problem will come back. But the source of the excess nutrients has to be removed or the problem will persist.
The presence of high phosphates can come from a couple of sources which are the old water in your tank, and decaying substances. Also, you may need to reduce the amount of food you give to your fish.
Fish wastes’ byproduct makes nitrates naturally rise in the aquarium after some time and that is why a water change is a required maintenance as part of upkeep of an aquarium. High levels of nitrates in the aquarium are often the result of having too many fish in the tank per-gallon of water.
In general, a partial water change removes about 10-15 % of the water and can clean the gravel and help remove any excess uneaten food in the tank. If the problem persists yet you are certain the water is not really bad, check your fish. If they are alright, you just might need to give it some time, because if it’s bacteria that is causing the problem, it will resolve itself. This may not be applicable in all cases. There are times when you will really need to make sure that the problem is under control.
It is advisable to keep a smaller ‘quarantine tank’ in such cases so that you can transfer your fish to the other tank and deal with the problem in a more direct fashion. If you need to relocate your fish to an guarantine tank, then be sure beforehand that the quarantine tanks temperature and water PH are the same as the main tank or your fish may get very sick quickly and die.

Freshwater Aquarium Maintenance Tips and Tricks

Aquarium maintenance or aquarium cleaning is vital to maintain a healthy fish aquarium. Done properly it will create a wonderful living picture in your home or business. Your tank fish live in the controlled environment of your freshwater aquarium and you need to control that environment to keep them happy and healthy. Tank maintenance is a process so it’s good practice every time you feed the fish, take a moment to check the overall appearance and condition of the tank and check whether any fish are swimming oddly, not eating or have spots or blotches.
As a professional aquarium cleaner and installer I know that regular changes are a critical aspect of maintaining good water quality and a healthy fish aquarium. You should do a partial water change – say 25% to 30% every four weeks. At the same time clean the gravel, clean the sides of algae, change the filter media and test for water quality. You want to keep the water chemistry as stable as possible. Contaminants such as nitrates and bits of food, leaves and fish waste can stress fish and affect their health.
To perform aquarium maintenance disconnect the electrical heaters, power heads and filters. Leave the air pump running. Replace the filter media. Remove any artificial plants but leave the live ones. Take out and clean any dirty accessories or decorations in the tank (leave some so the fish have places to hide). Use a cleaner/vacuum to clean the base of the tank as food and plant debris can lodge there. Remove the water and gauge this by the water level in the tank. Replace the water with a bucket or a pump. Ideally the temperature of the water you put into the tank should be as close as possible to the water temperature in the tank to reduce stress on the fish.
if you have chlorine or chloromine in your water supply you will need to add de-chlorinator before you put it in the tank. Generally it’s a good idea to test the water weekly. The key parameters are pH and nitrates. pH between 6.5 – 6.9 is suitable for most species as at that level ammonia becomes ammonium and is no longer toxic to the fish. Nitrates should be kept below 30 ppm.
Finally replace the artificial plants and decorations, reconnect the filters, power heads and the heater and you should have a clean fish aquarium. It takes some practice to do this quickly but the reward is a thriving fish or pet aquarium that is truly a living picture.

East Coast Tranship makes the following information available to pet store trade and consumers to help you give your fish friends a better home to live! For more information, call us at (301) 782-1025 or visit the links at the bottom of this article.
East Coast Tranship, Inc. is a freshwater tropical fish wholesale supplier that sells to the pet store trade only. We are a direct importer which means you save 50 to 70% over wholesale prices.
Very small delicate fish get lost, or are often eaten by larger fish in a normal sized aquarium (30-125 gallons.) But, in a small 5-10 gallon tank, sitting on an office desk, there really are a large variety of small freshwater tropical fish and invertebrates that can be added to make a display that’s every bit as interesting and aesthetic as a big tank.
Here are some interesting freshwater tropical fish wholesale additions for the smaller tanks. Most do well in a planted tank.
Fork Tail Rainbows – Popondichthys furcata (Indonesia code 4764) average 1″
Fork Tail Rainbow
The rainbowfish found in river systems east of the Great Dividing Range of Queensland Australia are schooling and do not do well or show off their best colors if kept singly. Your freshwater tropical fish wholesale tank should include at least six individuals from the species.
The tank can be well planted along the back and sides, but leave plenty of open area as these fish are lively swimmers and require lots of swimming room. Use drift wood and bog roots only sparingly as they tend to acidify the water. A good plant to use is the java moss as it is native to the region and can also serve as a spawning medium.
Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid – Apistogramma cacatuoides (Indonesia code 4003) Average 1-1.25″
Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid
Apistogramma cacatuoides is a species of South American cichlid fish usually known under the common name cockatoo dwarf cichlid. The cockatoo dwarf is one of the best suited cichlid species for the planted aquarium. As the male is highly territorial however, it should be kept in pairs, trios (1 male, 2 females) or harems (1 male with many females), and in the company of peaceful tank mates like tetras. Water conditions should be in the pH 6.0-pH 7.5 range.
Agassizi’s dwarf cichlid – Apistogramma agassizii (Indonesia code 4688) Average 1-1.25″
Agassizi’s Dwarf Cichlid
Apistogramma agassizii is the scientific name for the Agassizi’s dwarf cichlid, a fish that occurs in many southern tributaries of the Amazon river. Male Agassizi’s dwarf cichlids are territorial by nature. Just like all dwarf cichlids the Agassizi’s dwarf cichlid requires weekly partial water changes in order to keep the nitrate levels as low as possible. The Agassizi’s dwarf cichlid grows to 4 inches (10 cm.) in length. It prefers a hardness level of 50 – 10 m/gl and a pH of 6.0.
Apistogramma pandurini (Indonesia code 4240) Average 1-1.25″
Apistogramma pandurini
A freshwater fish from South America. It is a dwarf cichlid, closely related to Apistogramma nijsseni.
Apistogramma Panduro, are sometimes referred to as Apistogramma pandurini. The name is derived from the Peruvian fish exporters who first collected the fish. Their native Peruvian waters are soft and acid with a sandy substrate. pH in their native waters is usually below 6.0. They are not fussy eaters and will adapt to most high quality foods.
Blue Killifish – Aphyosemion gardneri (Indonesia code 4629) Average 1.25″
Blue Killifish
A killifish is any of various egg-laying cyprinodontiform fish. All in all there are some 1270 different species of killifish, the biggest family being Rivulidae, containing more than 320 species. Members of this order are notable for inhabiting harsh environments, such as saline or very warm waters, water of poor quality, or isolated situations where no other types of fish occur. They are typically omnivores, and often live near the surface, where the oxygen-rich water compensates for environmental disadvantages.
Clown Killifish – Epiplathys annulatus (Indonesia code 4186) Average 1.25″
Clown Killifish
The Clown killi or Banded panchax is a type of killifish, and is not related to a clownfish. It is a rather rare fish and is marked with brown and yellow with vivid blue and red.
Most Killifish are territorial to varying degrees. In the aquarium, territorial behavior is different for every grouping, and will even vary by individuals. In a large enough freshwater tropical fish wholesale aquarium, most species can live in groups as long as there are more than three males.
Pencilfish – Nannostomus beckfordi (Indonesia code 4663) Average 1 -1.25″
Pencilfish
Nannostomus thrive in home aquaria when provided with soft, moderately acidic water, low nitrate levels and temperatures in the range of 72 degrees F to 82 degrees F. The addition of aquatic plants, including floating varieties, is recommended. The latter will reduce the likelihood of the fish jumping, which is a common occurrence for some of the species, especially N. espei and N. unifasciatus. They should be kept in schools of at least six in a freshwater tropical fish wholesale tank.
If kept in a community aquarium, the best tank mates are other species of Nannostomus, small peaceful characins and corydoras. Aquaria with strong water current, large tank mates, or swift-moving species are contraindicated. If kept in a thickly planted single-species aquarium with the above water parameters, most species will spawn, eggs will not be eaten, and the fry will be found among the floating plants. Baby brine shrimp, live or frozen, and other small-sized foods are required for both fry and adults.
Nannostomus are also avid biofilm grazers and, for most of the species, algae is an under-reported staple of their diet. In most species the males will establish small territories and defend them. Their defensive actions are usually harmless but, in two species, N. mortenthaleri and N. trifasciatus, antagonistic behavior directed at conspecifics can have deleterious results if sufficient space and plant cover are not provided.
Once acclimated to the aquarium, and provided with conditions to their liking, Nannostomus are hardy and have a firm grasp on life, often living for five or more years.
Threadfin Rainbow – Iriatherina werneri (Indonesian code 4650) Average 1.25″ – 1.5″
Threadfin Rainbow
The threadfin rainbowfish or featherfin rainbowfish: In aquaria they are usually peaceful, they live preferably in groups of six or more. Because of their long fins they should obviously be kept in a tank without fin-nippers. They breed best in tanks without other species.
Threadfin Rainbowfish do well in aquariums of 20 US gallons (76 L), however 30 US gallons (110 L) is preferred. They are best housed in a “species only” tank; meaning that the tank is reserved for the Threadfins alone. Because of their tiny mouths, they can be difficult to feed. They do well with live foods, such as baby brine shrimp, and the micrometre larval diets. They prefer water that is soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic (pH 6.0 – 7.0), and with a temperature of 23 – 29 degrees C (73 – 84 degrees F).
Marble Hatchet fish – Carnegiella strigata (Brazil Code 6117) Average 0.75 – 1″
Marble Hatchet fish
The Marbled Hatchet fish, is a small, freshwater ray-finned fish native to South America and is common in the aquarium industry. Like most Amazonian fish, the species prefers softer, acidic water. Hatchets usually occupy the top portion of the freshwater tropical fish wholesale tank and like many other aquarium species may be shy at feeding times just after they have been introduced. However, given some time and proper water conditions, they will be less hasty.
As with most Characins (see Characidae), they are omnivores and prefer a varied diet, including live or frozen food, and vegetables. However, they will not swim to the bottom to eat so all food must float. Hatchets have a tendency to be shy fish and are easily intimidated by larger or fast moving fish, so they are only appropriate for very peaceful communities or species tanks.
They will also be happier if they don’t have to share the top portion of the tank with any other fish and if kept in schools of at least three. They like plants with long trailing leaves to hide under. It is absolutely necessary for tanks inhabited by these beautiful fish to have a tight lid, as they can and will jump when startled.
Cardinal Tetra – Paracheirodon axelrodi (Brazil Code 6102) Average 0.5″ – 1″
Cardinal Tetra
The cardinal tetra, is a freshwater fish native to the upper Orinoco and Negro Rivers in South America. Given the origins of the cardinal tetra, namely blackwater rivers whose chemistry is characterized by an acidic pH, low mineral content and the presence of humic acids, the species is adaptable to a wide range of conditions in captivity, though deviation from the soft, acidic water chemistry of their native range will impact severely upon breeding and fecundity.
The preferred temperature range of the fish is 21 degrees C to 28 degrees C (70 degrees F to 82 degrees F). The water chemistry of the aquarium water should match that of the wild habitat – filtration of the aquarium water over peat is one means of achieving this.
Scarlet Gem Badis – (Singapore code 1863) Average 1″
Scarlet Gem Badis
The Badis is a small, predatory fish that feeds on tiny invertebrates. Males normally display stronger coloration and females may appear more rounded when gravid. Coloration is extremely variable and changes with mood, though typically the fins are blue and dark vertical bands are apparent on the flanks.
Galaxy Rasbora – Celestichthys Margaritatus (Singapore code 2153) Average 1″
Galaxy Rasbora – Danio
Danio are native to the fresh water rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, The Danio is an ideal species for any planted or community aquarium as they add color and will get along with other community species well. They are quite easy to care for as they will tolerate a variety of water temperatures and conditions, although they would prefer a water temperature around 78 degrees F with a slightly alkaline pH.
Danio are a small schooling species that should be kept in groups of at least 6 individuals with 8 or 10 individuals in the group being ideal. It is best to duplicate their natural environment in the freshwater tropical fish wholesale aquarium with an abundance of live plants and with some drift wood and rocks. In the wild this species lives in very calm water that is often spring fed or formed from overflows of other waterways, thus they should be kept in aquariums that do not have constant strong direct currents.
They live in shallow water in the wild that has strong direct sunlight, so they do very well in strongly lit planted aquariums, and will use heavily planted areas in the aquarium or driftwood and rocks to retreat to if they feel threatened.
The Celestial Pearl Danio is an omnivore that will eat virtually any standard topical fish foods available within the hobby. They will readily accept flaked foods, frozen preparations, vegetable or algae flakes and wafers along with freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex worms and brine shrimp. Essentially they will eat the same foods that would be being fed to the bulk of tropical freshwater species found in a tropical community aquarium.
Harlequin Rasbora – heteromorpha (Singapore code 2159) Average 0.75″
Harlequin Rasbora
All of the Rasbora species are unaggressive, peaceful, and can be kept with fish of similar temperament. They are strong swimmers and in nature prefer to be in small schools. They like to stay in the upper areas of the freshwater tropical fish wholesale aquarium. Your tank should provide plenty of open space for swimming as well as some dense plantings to serve as shelter. The water temperature should be kept around 76 degrees F.
Rasboras prefer soft water and if possible you should use a peat filter bag in your filter, (Tetras will benefit also.) They will eat flake, frozen as well as live food.
Many species of Rasbora will breed without too much difficulty, spawning freely in soft, neutral or slightly acidic water. Unfortunately Rasbora Heteromorpha is not one of these. The water should be very soft with a hardness of 1.5 to 2.5 DH and a pH of around 6.0.

Freshwater Aquarium Information: Home Marine Life

An aquarium provides a representation of what marine life is at a very small scale, although what I just said would probably not be the actual reason why aquarium hobbyists are so captivated by these little cute creatures swimming about in a fish tank right at your home. If you yourself feel that sense of astonishment and would want to start owning an aquarium, you don’t just find any fish tank, fill it with water, and start throwing fish in. There are a few basic things that you have to consider.
Do Some Research
If you want to raise freshwater fish, then it’s best if you first start doing research about all of the freshwater fish species that are used for aquariums. Find a book about freshwater aquarium information in general. Search the internet for various kinds of fish and their profiles for aquarium environment compatibility. If possible, try to go to different aquarium shops too see what different kinds of hobby products they can offer. Most importantly, ask people who are already into the hobby and some experts for personal and experience-based advice.
Next on your research list would be the items needed to be able to raise the fish. For example, having a larger or smaller tank depends on your preference, but it’s actually recommended for beginners to go for larger tanks, mainly because of two reasons: for easier fish maintenance for a large number of fish (because starters are usually excited to see many kinds of fish at once), and for easier water chemistry maintenance (water easily dilutes these substances when they is an abundant amount of it). Choosing the right filter to use would ultimately depend on the general specifications of the aquarium. How fast does it get dirty? What are the factors that get it dirty after a certain amount of time? And always remember to do maintenance of these items, to keep them always working in top condition.
Calculate Costs
Next, you need to consider the total costs of the items needed. You’d have to know if a certain item’s cost would be suitable for you as a hobby or not. Remember, price is not always proportional to quality, because even if you have, for example, high caliber expensive lighting equipment (e.g. metal halide lamps) for a fish tank, it still needs a good amount of compatibility for it to work well on your aquarium. If you can keep the price low without sacrificing quality, then it’s all better. For example, as a beginner, instead of using an expensive canister filter, you can opt for the simpler yet sufficiently efficient power filters and learn first through experience the filtering methods that these machines use.
Keep It Simple
Finally, keep it all scaled down. You’re just starting to learn all of the things needed for you to raise fish properly, and even if your knowledge in freshwater aquarium information is complete in theory, applications in real life can surprise you. While it’s actually not that bad to have a large number of fish in a large fish tank, it’s not really that recommended to work with many different kinds of fish in a single fish tank, as you risk incompatibility of these fishes, along with many unwanted negative results from rushing into things. Enjoy the hobby at a slow, even pace. You’ll find that fish can work wonders for you, even when they’re just gracefully swimming about in your simple, but elegant aquarium.

Here is an approximate pricing of fish tanks and aquarium kits and equipments to guide you in your shopping for products either online or at your nearby pet shop. Rates of products for the fish-keeping hobby differ in terms of size, dimensions, shape, style, materials and manufacturers. For example, a glass aquarium is relatively cheaper than an acrylic aquarium. However, in terms of shipping, the acrylic tank is easier transported from the shop to your home than the glass version because of the latter’s fragility. Each pet store has interesting packages to offer that a purchased aquarium usually comes in a package of filters, heaters and light. Remember that in some offers though, you actually may not need some of the products included in the package that it is best to have completed your design first and to have a full list of your aquarium needs before you go shopping. When you have good accurate info, it will make your shopping journey a little easier.
Nowadays, a purchased aquarium usually comes in a package of filters, heaters and lights. In some offers though, you actually may not need some of the products included in the package so it is best to have completed list for your aquarium needs before you go shopping. Then, you can canvass on the price and shop around. To buy a freshwater aquarium takes persistence but it is worth the effort.
Here is an approximate pricing of fish tanks and some extra advice to guide you in your shopping.
Small Tanks
Small tanks are tanks with 2 to 15 gallons and cost anywhere from up to and will often include many of the extra pieces built right into the tank for convienience. A fish bowl usually costs around -25 depending on the size of the bowl and is still popular in offices around the world and is typically around 1 to 3 gallons, especially with the world famous Betta Fish. Small fish tanks are popular because they are only for a fish or two and can fit on any desk or table. These are the popular small fish tanks and the ones that sell the most.
Another popular type of fish tank that sells well is the small rectangular aquarium, that are 10 gallons in size and are 20 x 8 x 12 inches in measurements. These can cost around and are popular in small offices and home offices around the world.
Medium-Sized Tanks
These tanks range from 20 to 60 gallons in weight and can range in price from around up to 0 and that often will not include the extra accessories that you will need to make the aquarium function properly. The most common shapes for the medium sized aquariums are Rectangular and Hexagon.
These aquariums function great, are easy to clean, and are popular in homes and offices across the world and are also easy to set up. They are also the aquariums that can be the biggest nightmare to repair if something goes wrong or the person handling the maintenance does not know what they are doing. In getting a aquarium in this price range, speak first to a store clerk to be sure to get great advice before you make your purchase, and ask them questions like “what is the most popular problem that people have complained about with this size aquarium and exactly how do I prevent this problem”, which will get you excellent free information.
Another point worth mentioning about medium sized aquariums are that, because they are popular in sales, you can get a great deal on accessories and equipment at pet stores with huge discounts of the stores list prices. This is a huge help because it will give you more tank for your money or extra supplies for free, like free fish food for a year or something great like that.
Large Tanks
Finally, large tanks range from 80 gallon on up and are the most expensive ones. aquariuns these size require not only expert care, but also the best maintenance as they are found only in large homes and professional offices. Their selling prices are typically 0 and up and can easily run over a thousand dollars for one aquarium. If you step into aquariums this size, be prepared with a huge bank account as the average person cannot afford this as a hobby. You can find large aquariums that can be over one thousand gallons and be in many different shapes and sizes.
These types of aquariums are often custom built and can be made into all of the popular shapes that you might want as well as some shapes that you might think are not possible but they are. Large aquariums are only maintained by professionals. No one in an office or home setting are going to be able to deal with the constant maintenance and upkeep of an aquariums as large as one thousand gallons. These giants are not that popular for price reasons but smaller, large aquariums like around 150 gallons are popular enough that they keep professionals busy year round.
My advice to someone with a large aquarium is to ONLY have the proofessional handle your maintenance and upkeep. It will be cumbersome and it will be a ton of work so leave it to the pros. If you do decide to do it yourself, you will probably regret a few months later, as most people do with tanks this size.
A Brief Word on Custom Aquariums
A custom aquarium is an aquarium that is not in mass production and not typically for sale in your local fish stores shelves. This means that the fish tank can be small and still cost you a small fortune to have it made. It can be shaped to be like a sink, a coffee table, an office desk, a phone booth or any other object your mind can dream up.
The cost for custom aquariums range from several hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, with most expensive one that I have ever heard of the size of a giant swimming pool that cost over one million dollars.
I would not consider this unless I were a millionaire as this can be brutally expensive and even the coffee table version will cost you a lot of money as it is said to cost around fifty thousand dollars for a completely custom one!

Using an electronic training device like a shock training collar to your dog is relatively easy and safe if you completely understand the basic guidelines of using it. For a lot of dog owners, the mere mentioning of an electronic collar to train their dog is intolerable. On the other hand, the idea of a shock training collar is in fact founded on humane dog training.

Easy Freshwater Aquarium Maintenance

One of the ideas that hold many people back from starting up a fish tank is the mistaken belief that it will require constant upkeep and attention. The truth is that most freshwater aquarium maintenance issues are taken care of by proper set-up in the beginning. The rest of the upkeep, as you will see, is not too difficult.
There are definitely some maintenance procedures that need to be done to keep your aquarium running at its best. The key to making the job easier is simply to establish a schedule and make it a habit.
So what are the things that need to be done, how often will they need to be done, and how long will they take?
Aquarium maintenance to-do list:
Water Change – This one is very important. As a general rule, change 15-25% of the water every 2 weeks. You do have a little flexibility on this one, but some tanks may require a bit more. For example, a well-stocked goldfish tank might be better off with a weekly change due to their higher waste output. The key is to set a routine and stick to it. Remember that when doing water changes be sure to condition (de-chlorinate) the water and get it to the right temperature before pouring it in. It would defeat the purpose if you gave the fish clean water that totally shocks them!
Change/Clean the Filter – This should be done approximately every three weeks. It is overkill to do it sooner than that and if you wait too long, the filter becomes much less efficient. Thanks to evolution in filter design over the years, this process is often as simple as pulling out a cartridge and replacing it with a new one (very easy). Do not use any harsh chemicals to clean your filter, as they could harm the fish and also kill the beneficial bacteria that reside in the filter.
“Vacuum” the Tank – What? Depending on how many and what type of fish you are keeping, it may become necessary to clean some of the excess food, feces, plant matter, etc. from the gravel in the bottom of your tank. There are many gravel vacuums available that are essentially a tube connected to a wide end that runs across the bottom. They use siphon action to suck up the gunk and this is a perfect way to get your water change out of the way, too. It is probably not necessary to do this step with every water change, but possibly every other one.
Check Out Your Fish – This may seem like an obvious one since you’ll be looking at the fish daily, at the very least during feedings. But I’m talking about really giving them a close examination. Look for white spots, tattered fins, exceptionally thin or fat fish, erratic swimming, or anything else that doesn’t look quite right. If you do this on a regular basis you can discover and act on any problems before they become life threatening to your fish.
Test Your Water – This is another one that falls under the preventative maintenance category that will keep any small problems from becoming big problems. If the pH, ammonia, or nitrate/nitrite levels are a little out of whack it won’t be a big deal to fix, and the only way to know this is to do a regular water test.
Scrape Algae – Pretty simple: whenever it starts to build up, scrape it off. Again, this is easier if done regularly, before it grows into a thick carpet on the side of the tank. It is a good idea to do this before the water change because scraping will lead to some “floaties” that can be sucked up when siphoning out the water for the change.
Plant Care – If you are keeping live plants in your aquarium they will need a bit of maintenance. Many plants will become uprooted and need to be re-anchored. Some of the fast growers need occasional trimming to keep them from overgrowing your tank, and many plants need a little bit of fertilizer to keep them healthy.
So that is about it. The list may look long, but if you really add it up, you are looking at 1-2 hours every two weeks to cover everything necessary to keep your aquarium in tip top shape. That is nothing compared to the constant enjoyment you get from a happy, healthy tank.

Many domestic dogs wear collars. They are after all a vital means of identification should they become lost. Some of us will even buy our pets designer dog collars to add a touch of style to what otherwise is to all intents and purposes a purely perfunctory adornment. But what may be less familiar to many is dog coats. Not just the bare-basic piece of waterproof to keep out the rain, that is, but a veritable array of hoodies, tweets, overcoats, hunter-coats, fashion clothing and step-in suits.

—DONATE— www.paypal.com oranda goldfish planted aquarium tank All of the Yellow Gouramis (5) and all the young Goldfish from the 60 gallon tank went in here because the larger Goldfish were stealing their food. I added an Eheim Classic canister filter, fine air bubbles and a Coralife 65w compact fluorescent light. The tank already had an AquaClear 70 running. The tank is a little cloudy because some powdered food got in there but that should clear up soon. I may add, if I remember, the new video of the tank with clear water. This was the 29 gallon aquarium. The other fish tank that I have on YouTube is the 60 gal tall aquarium. Both tanks have exactly the same dimensions except that the 60 gal is about 2x as long. The plants in this tankare mainly egeria (or pond weed) but also anubias nana and water sprite

Introduction
Generally speaking, freshwater fish are hardier and more resistant to water temperature and pH variations. This makes them the best fish to start a collection as with. However, they are still fish and they do still require fresh water that is full of oxygen.
As with any other living thing, a fish create natural wastes. In their natural environment, there is usually a large body of water with a wide range of other organisms which provide an effective cleansing system. In the aquarium, however, you control the quality of the environment your fish live in. It is, therefore, up to you to ensure that waste materials are dealt with effectively. If they are not, then they will eventually hurt your fish.
But don’t despair. Maintaining a healthy environment for your fish is not that difficult. You need to add a filter, but you should also consider other living things which can absorb these wastes. Underwater plants, like many others above the surface produce oxygen as they grow, making them an excellent addition to any freshwater aquarium. It’s also a good idea to refresh the water in your aquarium – about 10% every 2 or 3 weeks is about right as long as you have a filter and some live underwater plants. If you don’t, then a little more often may be necessary. Don’t forget if you use tap water to fill your aquarium, then this must first be treated to remove chemicals often added to the domestic water supply. Your local pet shop owner will be able to advise you on suitable treatments.
Things to consider as you are buying your tank is the type of light, hood, stand and thermometer you wish to use. These can have an impact on the growth of the plants and water temperature.
There is some great information, including a FREE newsletter available at http://www.aquariums.glebe-systems.com.
How to choose an aquarium
Aquarium volumes are measured in a range of units. Most common are litres or gallons, but you will also see quarts and there may well be others too. The good tanks range in size from about 45 litres all the way up to 130 litres or even more.
Tanks tend to be sold by their length and depth. In general, you should try to get the largest tank you can. Once established, a larger tank is easier to clean and you can have many different types of fresh water fish dwelling in the same tank simultaneously without incident and with plenty of room to grow.
Choosing a good stand
In order to make an educated decision about which stand you need to buy for your aquarium you must consider many factors. These factors include:
will it be able to support the weight of not just the tank but the water that fills it?
will the tank be in a level area or does it need to be leveled in some way?
should the stand be connected to other forms of support to strengthen it?
Don’t forget, even small tanks when filled with water are very heavy.
Choosing the right type of light
Lights are critical to the health of the plants in your tank. They also enable you to see your fish more clearly.
The one real problem that they cause is the build-up of algae which you will be required to clean on a regular basis or else the water purity may begin to be reduced. The lights can also give off significant amounts of heat which may affect the water temperature. This is not such a problem for the coldwater aquarium. Generally, in freshwater at least, your fish will be happy in warmer water, but remember that warmer water will contain less dissolved oxygen, so the warmer the water, the less fish you will be able to keep! When thinking about lights it is important to find a balance between a light that is strong enough for plants to grow and for you to be able to see your fish, but not so strong as to cause your fish undue stress.
The importance of choosing a good hood
The hood is the apparatus that acts as a lid for your tank and keeps the fish from making a jump for it and dying on your floor. Additionally, it keeps dirt particles, garbage, unwanted animals and other such things from getting into the tank. It also shields your light. Make sure that you get a hood that matches the size of your tank for the best results in protecting your aquarium.
Picking the right type of thermometer
The thermometer is an indicator of the temperature either in the environment, whether the air or water. Usually they are created from glass tubes and have mercury or alcohol in them. As the temperature rises or falls, so too does the level within the thermometer. Your local pet shop will have these types of thermometers in stock. You can probably just buy a very basic one and is all that you will really need.
Besides all the things that have been discussed until this point, you should also have gravel, filters and the like for your tank. The proper type of food can also be purchased at your local pet store.
