A fish aquarium is designed to offer domesticated marine life with a contained environment that mimics that of their natural habitat. Having first become popular in the 1950s, fish keeping is now widely enjoyed by many as a fun hobby and as a beautiful addition to the home. When maintained properly, fish aquariums can add a decorative touch to any room.
The most effective fish aquariums are those that feature the tank itself, along with lighting, a filter and heating unit. Commonly available in various sizes to accommodate space and different types of marine life, fish aquariums vary in price according to both the size and features of the unit. Everything from the small square aquarium to a large fish tank is up for grabs if you know where to find them. Typical fish aquariums can be found in most retail stores, but larger fish tanks often require a visit to the local pet store or some bargain shopping on the internet.
Fish aquariums are very important to housing domesticated marine life in the home. Small fish bowls, which are widely available, are inexpensive but do little to recreate the natural habitat that a fish would normally have. In order to live a long and happy life, fish need circulating water and movement as they have in the wild. When in captivity, which is the case when you have a fish as a pet, they need to have filtered and regularly cleaned water. While lighting is perhaps not as important, it does provide a sense of night and day and natural light for your pet.
When using fish aquariums to house your marine life, it is important that you regularly test the water using a test kit. In addition to changing the water regularly, it is best to confirm that the water you are using is safe. Regular tap water, for instance, may feature contamination that could prove harmful to fish. The reason is because of the chemicals and purifiers that are often used to treat the water. Instead, using distilled water may be the better option to ensure that it is free of chemicals or any other harmful agents. When changing the water in fish aquariums, you should remove up to 20% of the current water and replace it with the new.
When shopping for fish aquariums, it’s a good idea to check over the unit before you purchase it for cracks or other defects. If you are shopping online, be sure to ask about shipping insurance in case your aquarium is damaged while in route to your home.

They are simple and fast to clean giving you more time to spend looking at your fish rather than cleaning their tank. Reef One are the creators of the Biorb fish tank and they really have done a great job with them. They really are attractive, fun and stylish so if you want something a little different for your fish that looks great then this may be the tank for you. The Biorb tank sure is my favourite and the best aquarium that I can give my fish.

Protein Skimmer is used widely in saltwater aquarium or fish tank to remove any organic compounds before they break down into nitrogenous waste and pollute the water. Basically, you can say that protein skimmer device is the form of aquarium filtration that removes organic compounds just before they start to decompose. Protein skimming works by releasing thousands of micro bubbles from mixing water and air, the smaller the bubbles the more effective the protein skimming is. To produce these bubbles, protein skimmer needs needle wheel, venture pump, counter current, and air stone.
These micro bubbles will attract different wastes and force them to reach the skimmer’s chamber. As the bubbles reach the top of the protein skimmer water column, the water begins to drain and create the foam. This foam will then carry the organic molecules to the skimmate collection cup to separate any waste and organic molecules. Any inorganic molecules that somehow bound to the organic ones will be exported back to the water. Several types of molecules that usually removed in the process are: fats, fatty acids, metals, and carbohydrates. This removal is wanted by most aquarists. In fact, they usually place the protein skimmer as the first form of aquarium filtration to lessen the burden of the filtration system as a whole.
Having protein skimmer as your filtration system is often considered unnecessary. Well, if you just have a small aquarium with just a few fish inside, it’s not necessary to use protein skimmer. You can just use standard filtration system. However, if you are serious in maintaining your water quality, it is suggested that you use protein skimmer. We’ve all seen salt water aquariums in books and on the internet as well as in our homes. They come in all sorts of sizes and shapes, some being enormous, then all the way down in size to a nano aquarium. Whatever size they are and whether they are fish only or reef, they rely on nature’s life support system, the nitrogen cycle.
Any aquarist needs to basically understand the nitrogen cycle. There is no requirement to become a scientist, just know what is going on. Then the dangers of stressing the aquarium will be better realized (as an example overfeeding, perhaps the main problem with fledgling aquarists?).
All the aquarist needs to do is provide the correct environment for the nitrogen cycle to function. This can be done in several ways that will not be gone into here….except to point out that the nitrogen cycle can reach its full function with some filtration methods and only partially reach it with others. As an example, full function can be reached with ‘live’ rock and partial function can be reached with a canister filter.
So, how does it work? The following is very simplified.
As part of normal aquarium life, livestock put waste into the seawater. In addition there is breakdown of other items such as algae which has died and similar. On top of that the livestock need food which is provided in the main by the aquarist. All of these will produce ammonia which is toxic. Left unchecked, ammonia will kill our livestock.
Provided a proper environment has been provided, nature comes to the rescue. A colony of bacteria (Nitrosomas) develop and they transform the ammonia into nitrite. The toxic ammonia has been dealt with but it has been converted to another toxin which is nearly as detrimental to livestock. Again, another colony of bacteria (Nitrobacter) transform the nitrite into nitrate. Now we are getting somewhere, nitrate is nowhere near as toxic as nitrite. Depending what they are, generally livestock can stand fairly high but varying concentrations of nitrate.
It is at this point that the nitrogen cycle has gone as far as it can in the example given above, the canister filter. All the bacteria have required is a suitable environment with a good supply of oxygen. The bacteria mentioned above operate in an oxygen rich environment.
If an aquarist with our example, a canister filter, wants to continue and deal with the nitrate, then another filter needs to be set up for this.
The aquarist who has used the other example, ‘live’ rock, need just let nature continue.
It is in fact best to keep nitrate at low levels, particularly with corals but not exclusively so. The natural nitrate reduction process is known as denitrification. Bacteria once again form a colony, but the environment they need is one very low in oxygen. This is called an anaerobic environment. As oxygen is mainly absent, the bacteria utilise the nitrate. In the process the nitrate is transformed into nitrogen gas. The nitrogen gas is released from the aquarium at the water surface.
There are other ways to remove nitrates (for example algae) but if the full natural cycle can be achieved then this is the best.
As can be seen, our example the canister filter is unable to deal with nitrate as the environment is totally oxygen rich. To deal with nitrate, a further special nitrate filter will need to be employed. Or, if nitrates are not too high, water changes may be sufficient.
‘Live’ rock (in sufficient quantity, good condition, and with acceptable water circulation) can deal with ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. The bacteria live on and within the rock.
There are filtration methods other than the two examples given. (‘Live’ rock is however considered to be the best, and can be supplemented by a DSB (deep sand bed)). Whatever the filtration method employed, it must be pointed out that there are limits that any filter can deal with. So don’t overfeed. Don’t overstock (resist the “one more fish” temptation unless you are sure your stocking level will take it). Also be willing to carry out water quality tests. If the aquarium is new, allow time for the bacteria colonies to build, or for the ‘live’ rock to settle and ‘adjust’.
Next time you sit and view your seawater aquarium, think of the bacteria, nature’s engines, working for you.

A reef aquarium is vastly different from a fish only aquarium. Not only will you need different equipment, but you will need a whole different skill to create and maintain a successful reef tank. Although you can keep fish in your reef tank, the main focus of a reef tank is to display live coral. Introducing certain species of fish can help in maintaining the reef environment and special care should be taken when selecting the appropriate species to compliment the coral in your tank.
Reef tanks are primarily filtered by the live rock through a natural process. This biologic filtration is usually supplemented by protein skimmers. Protein skimmers use what is called the foam fracture process to eliminate waste matter and filter the water. A combination of biological filtration and protein skimmers is very effective at keeping a reef tank in ideal condition.
Unlike fish only tanks, reef tanks require constant water movement. Different types of coral require different flow rates, but as a rule of thumb, a flow rate of 10x will be sufficient. What this means is that the flow rate needs to be 10 times the capacity of the tank (in gallons) per hour. It’s important that you adjust and fine tune the flow rates to the specific coral in your tank.
One of the most popular methods of creating water flow is by using power heads. They are simply small water pumps under the water that creates an underwater stream when you alternately switch them on an off. By using a wave timer, the pumps are synced to create a water flow. A newer method for creating and managing water flow is the use of submersible propeller pumps. Although they are more expensive, they use less power and can produce greater water flow compared to power heads.
Another important aspect of reef tanks is lighting. While fish only tanks use lighting primarily for display, a reef tank needs light to “feed” the coral. Since the coral uses photosynthesis to stay alive, lighting is the most important aspect of keeping your coral alive.
The lighting levels required for each type of coral varies widely. While some types of rock require very high levels of light, some only need low light levels. Special care should be taken when picking coral for your tank to ensure that the lighting of your tank is sufficient. As a general rule 5 to 8 watts per gallon should be sufficient for the most common coral.

Among many important mechanical devices for the best quality fish tanks, the choice of best fit filtration system is the most cardinal. This water regulating system is of due importance because it is the key mechanism which provides a natural and healthy environment to fish. One can imagine its importance from the fact that it is almost impossible to keep tropical fish like goldfish as a pet without filtration.
Don’t ever think that choosing a filtration system will be just a jack play. It is a daunting job because it needs the choice of the best from a variety of procedures and this may result in nothing but mere confusions. On the other hand one can’t ignore it at all because the success of aquarium depends wholly on the effectiveness of filtration system. That is the main reason it is always taken as crucial when it comes to the quality of aquarium. Three different types of filtration system need special concerns and profound knowledge before choosing a filtration system for the fish tank. A brief description to them all is;
1. The most basic filtration: mechanical filtration
This system is basically a simple one. With this filtration process, one can get rid of all the debris and toxic particles present in the water. In response to how it works? It works by just passing the water through foam or other spongy material into the tank. This material filters by trapping the debris and not allowing them enter into the tank. This technique may fail to filter for a longer time due to backing up so it is quite necessary to replace the sponge regularly.
2. The most effective type, biological filtration:
This is the most suitable and most effective filtration system for most of the fish tank types. This technique includes the working of bacteria. The reason for the use of the bacterial colonies is to process the toxic wastes of the fish and turn them to relatively lower or no harmful material. Ammonia and nitrite combinations are transformed into lesser toxic compounds of nitrates. The one and only thing, the tank requires for the induction of this beneficial bacteria bed is going through a chemical process known as ‘nitrogen cycle’ and you are all done. It must be clear by now that how much the process of biological filtration is grades worth for a perfect aquarium is and the importance of nitrogen cycle as the backbone of the whole technique. 3. Chemical filtration- the dissolved wastes removal technique:
This process is relatively better in performance and includes organic compounds as basic filtrates. The whole process is the running of tank water through activated carbon. Acting just like a foam, the porous or spongy structure of activated carbon helps in separating the wastes of compounds of phosphates by dissolving them in itself. A plus to the efficiency is removal of pinching odor of ammonia. This method in a broader sense is a water purifying technique and has nothing to do with the health of fish but of course it has an indirect impact on their survival compatibilities. An icing on the cake for using this modern technique would be the removal of medications and probable diseases from the water of the aquarium. Thus is highly recommended to use this technique for recycling purposes especially when you feel there had been some sorts of diseases in the water.
The choice of right filtration system depends upon many factors. It mostly depends upon the size of the aquarium, the expected and meet able cost of the tank and processes and the need of the most utilizable technique of filtration for the water and tank. Adding to it almost all filtration systems allow the induction of a separate filtration unit to them. Thus it is quite easier to modify the filtration technique according to the requirements. The qualities of each of them go into their pros and cons.

Acrylic Aquarium Kit Care – Everything You Wish To Know
It was in the 1800’s that the habit of collecting and keeping fish started. It was very basic. They were mostly made from glass on one side and surrounded by some other material like wood or metal for the other sides. These aquariums mostly kept fishes that were locally available and were native to the region. The other thing that used to prevail was that the fishes were mostly fresh water fishes and not salt water as the salt content could erode the metal frame which kept the tank in one piece.
This drastically became different with the introduction of adhesives made from silicon in the 1960s. Because of this people said bye to metal frames and started keeping invertebrates and fresh water fishes. Nowadays even glass has been frowned because of the handier Acrylic. They are flexible and do not break. Where in a case of some heavy object hitting the tank and its certain breaking, the acrylic which is flexible makes sure this does not happen. Also getting something decorative is more possible through acrylic rather than glass. They can be used either as tables or tanks or gum ball machine.
But there is one disadvantage of the acrylic aquarium. It becomes scratched soon and more easily. While cleaning you have to make sure you use only cleaning agents that are labelled safe. Do not use abrasive and harsh chemicals and paper or hard cloths to wipe. Instead use rubber or plastic scrubbers to clean the tank sides. But even in the case of your acrylic tank getting scratched, there is no need to fret as it can be repaired unlike the glass tanks. At pet, other speciality store and online you can buy an acrylic repair kit, they are easily available.
The aquarium kits can be bought at different prices and with different options for your choice. These kits will be available either in pet store or the specialized aquatic stores or huge chains and/ or of course the online shops. The fish lover can get anything from the small cylinder tank that doubles up the table lamp to the wall size aquariums. The kits come with some basic essentials like substrate, filters, corals, at times even lighting and the kits vary from one to another. It is not important where you buy the kit but remember the fishes have to be bought through a more trustworthy fish dealer. Don’t buy fishes that hang out at the top of the tank or the ones that are close to the dead ones as disease among them is extremely communicable. Do not trust a fish dealer who does not get you the fish you want from the tank, why? Well because the tank and the fishes are going to be yours and hence it is your choice!
