A beautiful aquarium can increase the beauty of any home. If you have goldfish in them then its beauty will be doubled because goldfish are very beautiful and lovable aquarium fish. But to keep your fish healthy you must maintain your aquarium properly.
These are the 25 very easy goldfish aquarium maintenance tips. If you can follow them you will see that your goldfish live happily for a long time:
1. Generally a goldfish may live from 5 to 10 years. But this mainly depends upon how you maintain your fish tank.
2. Always purchase your goldfish after you are complete with your aquarium set up process
3. Provide your fish with adequate food so that it remains healthy.
4. Ensure that your tank water is always clean and fresh.
5. Make sure that your tank is perfectly ready before you add fish to it.
6. During the preparation of your fish tank you must check the gravel that you are about to add, if it is clean enough.
7. You must keep the layer of the gravel very thin because the goldfish can sometimes be quite messy.
8. After this you can add tank plants and ornaments.
9. Before you add water to your newly prepared tank you must ensure that everything that you have added is perfectly clean and bacteria free.
10. Choose a fish tank with enough space because goldfish thrive better when they have enough space to swim and play.
11. Moreover, create a few hiding places for your goldfish inside the tank.
12. You can now add water to your fish tank.
13. You must place a de-chlorinator in the aquarium because chlorine contained in your tap water is dangerous for the goldfish.
14. As the fish tank is ready you can turn on the filter now.
15. You also need heather. The perfect temperatures for goldfish are 68 to 80 degrees F. But you must ensure that there are no rapid changes in the temperature because they goldfish may not bear that.
16. If you want you can keep the filter on in the tank for one or two days before you plan to a d fish into that water.
17. It is time now for you to add fish into your tank. But you must not add too many fish at one time. Do it with ease and time.
18. As your fish tank water grows old it gives birth to a lot of helpful bacteria as well which helps to keep the fish healthy. So it is always good to go with one or two fish at first.
19. One thing you must remember is that the nitrogen cycle of your tank will not initiate if do not add fish to it. So there is no point in running filter into the empty tank for many days.
20. Regarding water change for a new tank you can change 25% of tank water every week. You must do it a few weeks in the beginning.
21. Goldfish food is available in almost all the pet stores. When you buy your first goldfish do not forget to buy some food for it an s well at that time. You must feed the fish will small amounts for first few days.
22. The food residue will sink and settles down at the bottom of the water and may rot. But this rotten food may give birth to malicious bacteria and dangerously toxic chemicals which can even kill your fish. So always stay away from giving too much food to your fish.
23. Generally the nitrogen cycle inside that fish tank stops all the chemicals being generated. Moreover, this nitrogen cycle also generates foam which may make the water look cloudy for some time. You should not feel worried about it an s it is a perfectly natural process. Moreover, it is a proof that your tank atmosphere is healthy.
24. Always add new fish to the tank when the water inside is crystal clear.
25. Goldfish require a lot of space for healthy growth. They need enough space inside the tank for swimming and playing. So do not overcrowd your tank with too many fish.
By following these 25 important guidelines you can ensure fast and health growth of your goldfish.

Maintain Tank Temperature With A Fish Tank Chiller

Maintain Tank Temperature With A Fish Tank Chiller
As the name suggests, fish tank chillers are designed to keep the water in your fish tank cool in warmer climates. They are mainly used in marine aquariums where fish tend to be highly sensitive to temperature although fancy goldfish in tropical climes also benefit from the use of a fish tank chiller. An additional benefit is that cooler water has a greater capacity to hold dissolved oxygen thus avoiding issues with low levels of oxygen in your aquarium.
When do you need the fish tank chiller?
A fish tank chiller will be required when you run an aquarium with fish that prefer to live in cold water only. Aquarium chillers will maintain the water temperature you desire. Changing the temperature is something you need to do yourself, manually.
An alternative to a chiller is to run an air conditioning unit in the room that contains the aquarium, however running the air conditioner just to keep the fish tank water at the desired temperature can be a very expensive option. And even though a fish tank chiller may seem like an expensive item it will soon pay for itself if you are not running the air conditioner day – especially if you are not home during the day or you are on vacation.
Another chiller alternative is to add ice to the tank but this is highly impractical unless it is a very short term method to deal with heat wave conditions. If you do need to add ice to your tank it can be added by freezing water in a bottle. The frozen water bottle can be lowered into the tank or hung on the side of the tank.
For very warm climates and for fish that naturally require cold water there is no real alternative other than a chiller unit. It is also possible to purchase an aquarium heater and chiller in one unit which can be used year round to maintain the water temperature in both summer and winter.
When choosing your chiller you will have a choice of thermoelectric, in-line or drop-in fish tank chiller.
Thermoelectric chillers are commonly used in small tanks of less than 60 gallon capacity. They are energy efficient and silent running and can be used in both salt and freshwater aquariums.
Drop-in chillers are commonly used in saltwater aquariums or reef set ups. They require no additional plumbing and are fitted in line with the tank filter. They are simple to install and have low maintenance requirements.
In-line aquarium chillers are manufactured for tanks with a capacity of 60 gallons or more. They have a motor, a compressor and cooling fans and will require a well-ventilated area for installation. They may require professional installation and they are quite large.
An aquarium thermometer is an inexpensive necessity to use in conjunction with your tank chiller. If your chiller fails or mismanages the temperature of your aquarium you need to know immediately. A thermometer is a reliable way of monitory the temperature.
The main disadvantages of fish tank chillers are the cost of the units themselves – which can vary from a few hundred up to several thousand dollars – and the energy that they consume, which can be 80-100 watts per hour.

How To Maintain Aquarium Cleanliness

How To Maintain Aquarium Cleanliness
Freshwater aquarium maintenance is important though it’s quite tedious and involves delicate procedures, maintaining its cleanliness is necessary for fishes to live longer. Fish like other pets do need a healthy and clean surrounding to live with. It is not enough that you have a goal of keeping an aquarium and yet you are not able to clean it regularly. A fish tank can get dirty over time because of some reasons such as accumulated waste materials, algae and other things like leftover foods. It’s always nice to see a clean aquarium not necessarily to be as sparkling one but clean enough for fishes to stay healthy and promote good hygiene in the whole aquarium area. This cleaning task can be difficult at once especially for beginners but it can be fun and fulfilling in the long run. You will truly appreciate its effect after it has been cleaned to make it easier for you here are some helpful tips to follow how to maintain aquarium cleanliness:
Change water at regular intervals
Water inside the aquarium must be checked from time to time to determine if there is a need of re cleaning. Cleaning the aquarium requires a certain level of care so that everything goes well. The first thing to do is remove old water from the tank and transfer fishes from the main tank to the hospital tank for a while. All other objects can be removed as well for the main time to facilitate easier and faster cleaning.
Remove algae and excess dirt
Removing stubborn algae and dirt in the main tank can be easier if there is a routine cleaning done at regular intervals. This may take longer when the aquarium is not properly cleaned up previously. Remove first everything inside the aquarium and start cleaning dirt, it is suggested to use soft sponge especially if you are using acrylic tank so as not to scratch aquarium surface. Algae pads can be used to clean other types of aquarium.
Replace or clean filters
It is better to replace used filters than just cleaning them over and over again. Filters that are cleaned two to three times are advised to be replaced to maximize saving and efficiency. Avoid using detergents or soaps when cleaning aquarium filters because soaps and detergents may contain harmful ingredients that can affect the fishes inside.
Clean other aquarium decors
Clean everything inside the aquarium like small corals and shells. Never use soap or detergents to clean these small articles, soap residue may stay within the area and it may cause harmful damage to your fish. Instead soaked them in warm water mixed with a right amount of salt for a few minutes. After soaking clean excess dirt by scrubbing them with a sponge.
Water Replacement
Replace water after cleaning the tank and other articles inside the aquarium. When everything is clean water must be changed as well otherwise it is still the same dirty surrounding for the fish. Check the pH level of the tap water before filling your aquarium. Regulate the toxicity levels then transfer the fishes and other aquatic plants back into the main tank. Then your aquarium will have a fresh clean look for the next days to come.
Indeed it is good to see a clean and tidy aquarium but please be reminded that cleaning it too often is not advisable also. Since you will be transferring fishes from tank to another, there are tendencies for the fishes to become uneasy and stressed out. A regular cleaning interval is recommended, proper cleaning procedures and extra caution should be done in order to create a healthier, safer and cleaner fish aquarium surrounding.

How To Maintain Your Freshwater Aquarium
Aug 14th
How To Maintain Your Freshwater Aquarium
Before you buy an aquarium and fill it with fish, you need to find out what is involved in freshwater aquarium maintenance. One thing you cannot do with success is buy a group of fish, place them in your tank and then think that all you have to do is feed them. Aquariums are a lot of fun but they are not maintenance free. You need to do everything you can to keep your fish healthy and happy.
One of the things you can do to limit freshwater aquarium maintenance is to start out by equipping your aquarium with the best equipment and the right types of fish. For instance, a power filter is the answer to making your tank the most user-friendly. With one of these filters, you do not have to worry much about odors, cloudiness or water impurities. All you have to do is change the filter once a month and you are good to go.
A fish that can help you clean
When you fill your aquarium with fish, get a bottom dweller. These fish are more than worth their keep because they live on the bottom and keep the gravel and plants clean from any food that has fallen down there. They also keep the bottom of the tank algae-free. One of the best algae eaters and a real boon to freshwater aquarium maintenance is the plecostomus. This fish’s name has lots of letters and is hard to pronounce but it is the easiest solution to algae problems. They come in all sizes.
Daily fish checkups
Each day you should check to make sure that there is no leftover food floating around tank. Only feed an amount of food that your fish can eat in three to five minutes. Feeding too much food will make the water in the tank cloudy. Also check to make sure that your water is clean, your heater is working (if you have fish that need one) and that the lights are going on and off when they are supposed to. The biggest thing is, of course, to make sure there are no sick fish in the tank.
Ideally, you need to have a small tank all ready to go for isolating sick fish. Not everyone does but it will make life a lot easier if you can manage to have one. A sick fish should be isolated until you can determine what is wrong with him or her and whether or not the illness is contagious. This is especially critical with an injury as a fish that is not well will often be mistreated by the other fish in the tank. If the fish does have a contagious disease, you will have to treat all the other fish as well.
Aquarium cleaning
Freshwater aquarium maintenance means changing the tank water every two weeks. While this is necessary, it is not always the thing people most love about having an aquarium. Luckily, you only need to take out about 20% of the water, not all of it. Around once a month you will want to do a more thorough cleaning, where you take out one-half of the water. This too is when that second tank is going to come in handy. If you have one, you can keep the water in it just right so that when you clean the primary tank, you can move all the fish into the backup tank.
Water is usually removed from the tank using a siphon and fish are moved from one tank to another with a net. If you have to clean your tank with the fish still in it, be very careful not to hurt any of the fish.
A two-week cleaning means using a sponge to scrub the inside and outside of the aquarium. Do not ever use soap. A small amount of salt applied to the sponge will clean the glass beautifully. Either rinse or change your filter. Check the hoses if you have an air filter in your tank, and use a gravel cleaning device to get the substrate clean. If you have a bottom dwelling fish, this will be much easier as he will already have done most of the job.
Tank refills
When you do your monthly cleaning, take out all of the structures and plants and clean them with water and salt as well. Check the pH of the water to make sure it is what it’s supposed to be. The best way to fill your tank up again after a cleaning is to use distilled water and heat it up to the right temperature before adding it. Tap water should only be used in an emergency as it is never the best choice for your fish. It often contains chlorine and other organisms which can be deadly to fish.
The biggest thing to remember about freshwater aquarium maintenance is that you must never change all of the water at once. Only add a small amount of water to the pre-conditioned water in the tank–not more than 20% weekly or 50% when you clean the whole tank.
Fish are a wonderful hobby and you can spend endless hours engrossed in watching their movements and behavior. Make sure that you help them to be as healthy as possible by feeding the right types of food and performing regular freshwater aquarium maintenance.

The Tools You Need To Maintain An Aquarium
The tools you will need to maintain your aquarium include; siphons, scraper, net, bucket, water treatments, and so on. You will also need filters, gravel, ornaments, air pump, plants, etc. The filters will help you to keep out unwarranted chemicals. In all you can purchase biological, chemical, or mechanical filters. The filters help to remove waste, such as debris and ammonia. The filters include under-gravel, internal, and external filters. The better choice filters is the external filters, yet these filters more costly than the internal and under-gravel filters. In addition, you are recommended to combine under-gravel filters with either the internal or the external filters.
How to choose gravel?
It is recommended that you purchase gravel from local pet stores, since the people working at the pet store can give you the best direction. However, most people prefer the pre-washed products. If you purchase non-washed gravel, you will need to boil, cleanse, and prepare before using. Therefore, pet stores offer you the best products, since the wrong gravel could also affect the pH water levels in your tank. When pH is not balanced it will affect your fish. Still, if you purchase pre-washed gravel, make sure you rinse it before putting the gravel into the tank.
How do I choose ornaments?
Like gravel, you may have to boil particular ornaments before inserting them into the fish tank. Therefore, it is recommended that you seek advice from the pet store reps, or else read the labels.
How do I choose plants?
You want to choose plants that do not grow higher than your fish tank. The plants should also fit your fish tank needs. In other words, purchase marine water plants or fish plants if possible.
How do I choose an air pump?
Again, you should ask the professionals, since a variety of air pumps are available. The pumps work to circulate or move air through turbulence, which increase the rates of oxygen soaked up at the surface. You can go online and type in fish air pumps, which will lead you to links. The links will provide you helpful information as well as a wide assortment of air pumps. Read the details as provided to determine the choice pumps. In addition, make sure that the pumps will accommodate the size of your aquarium.
In addition, to pumps, tools, plants, filters, etc, you will need test kits. The kits are scientifically designed to test chemicals in water. Test kits will help you monitor the quality of water to avoid over consumption of nitrates, ammonia, nitrites, etc. You can test pH balance with test kits as well. Fish produce a certain amount of ammonia through waste, which can be converted to nitrites, which fish feed off. To fish, nitrites are non-toxic since they too produce these chemicals.
You can also purchase water treatment to maintain water. Chlorine treatments are ideal, since tap water tends to include chloramines and chlorine. Fish do not take kindly to these two chemicals. Online, you will find in the fish section a wide array of chlorine and water treatments available. In addition, you can find such treatments where aquariums and fish are sold.
If you are, just purchasing fish and aquarium for the first time go online and learn about starter kits, as well as beginner fish. Some fish are easier to take care of than other types of fish. In the fish category, you want to look up information that will help you relate to saltwater fish and freshwater fish. Freshwater fish include the tropical and Coldwater fish. Tropical fish are fascinating. Learn more about it.
