Aquarium Maintenance

Having an aquarium built and installed into your home or workspace can add an exciting element to any room. If thought about correctly it should look fantastic, and keep on looking fantastic for as long as you have it. However, if your aquarium is poorly maintained it can quickly become a bit of an eyesore. From murky water, algae to poorly fish, a unmaintained tank is not a good look but all these problems can be avoided quite easily by understanding a few basic things and keeping to a simple maintenance routine. This article aims to give a bit of advice on things you should consider when setting up a new tank.
Water Chemistry
Understanding the basics of water chemistry is the first step to having a healthy fish tank full of healthy fish. You need to know what elements to test for, and what levels this should be. Most fish get sick due this area of fish keeping being neglected so it is important you follow a few simple rules. You can purchase water testing kits from most aquarium shops and the items you should test for are; Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates as these are the main three chemicals that can harm fish. To check the general stability of your tank you should test for PH levels and water hardness. When you first set up your tank, try to test the water every few days and don’t stock any fish until you are happy the water is OK. Once your tank is established you can reduce this to monthly testing, plus testing after an event such as a filter change.
Water Changes
Water changes form an important part of aquarium maintenance. The main reason for this is that by changing the water you will reduce the harmful chemicals (as discussed above) and also replace the hardness of the water, thus maintaining a healthy balance. It is recommended that you change around 25% of the water every week or two. Never change all the water as doing so will completely ruin the healthy environment you have worked so hard to achieve. One thing you must remember is that you are doing these water changes for a purpose so always go by the results of your water tests instead of following a strict pattern. Every tank’s needs differ, so take this as only a guide and try to think about what your tank requires.
General Cleaning
From time to time, your tank will get mucky and this is perfectly natural. If your aquarium is positioned in direct sunlight, you will probably find that you may have problems with algae on the glass. To get over these issues, try to keep on top of them with a basic cleaning routine. It is advisable to clean the gravel every few weeks with a special gravel cleaner. This will get rid of any build of dirt and muck and prevent your water from getting too mucky. To clean algae on the glass, simply use a scraper to scrape the algae off. The amount you have to do this will depend on the amount of algae you have, but try to catch it before it gets out of control. General cleaning tools can be purchased from any aquarium shop.

Fish tank maintenance and cleaning

In this article you will find a discussion regarding a very crucial aspect of fish keeping- maintenance and cleaning. Every fish keeper wants a clean aquarium filled with beautiful and healthy fish. The schedule for cleaning fish tank primarily depends:
* Tank Placement – This is very important. Where you have placed your aquarium is crucial when it comes to cleaning and maintaining it. If you have placed it in a place where it is hard to go and clean it, then it is possible that it will not be cleaned regularly. As a result the fish will suffer. So make sure that you place your tank in such a location which has enough space around it for comfortable cleaning.
* Tank Size – Do you know that a bigger tank needs less maintenance compared to a smaller tank? Sounds interesting, right? But it is true. This is because large tanks have increased water volume. This means that fish waste as well as other chemicals can spread up in a larger area. So the water remains in a good condition for longer period.
* Filtration System – A good filtration system is essential for health and beautiful aquarium. It helps in keeping the water clean. A lot of people use biological filtration which helps in the growth of good bacteria. There are also mechanical filters which come with a box and needs to be placed inside the tank.
* Feeding – a very common mistake made by large number of fish keepers is that they over-feed their fish. If there is excess and left over food it will rot and will lead to water pollution.
* Number of Fish – The well-known rule of fish keeping is that for every gallon of water, you can have a single one-inch fish with slim-body. If your tank is over-crowded, it will mean more fish waste and other chemicals. Naturally your water will be polluted.
So in order to maintain your fish tank and to prevent it from becoming unhealthy, you must not overcrowd it, must not over-feed your fish, maintain a dependable filtration system, and place the tank in an accessible location.
The best way to ensure a healthy aquarium is to do the following things on a regular basis: The easiest way to stay on track is to follow the simply guideline below:
Daily
* Feeding – just like any other pet your fish also require food daily. Feed them regularly but abstain from overfeeding them as well.
* Water Temperature – You must check the tank water temperature, daily while remembering that water temperatures will definitely fluctuate during the day. So it is better to test the water each morning and evening.
* Equipment Check – Check your tank equipments daily. Make sure that the air pump and light are working properly.
* Fish Behavior Check – Monitor the behavior of your fish for a few minutes daily. This will help you to detect any problem with them like disease. If, they are swimming naturally then there is nothing to worry.
* Water Check –See if the tank water is cloudy or have any foul odor. If you notice anything like that you must change the water and also find out the reason.
Weekly
* Plants –In case you have live plants in your aquarium, you will need to remove any dead leaves that it may have.
* Algae – You must monitor and remove if needed the algae gathered in the tank once a week. You can use an algae magnet or scraper for this.
* Water Change – You will have to change 25-30 per cent of tank water every week with the help of a siphon hose. Remove large debris from the surface and then with a bucket nearby, siphon

Aquarium Care – 9 Great Tips For Daily and Weekly Maintenance

Owning a fish is probably one of the easiest pets to have. There is no walking, no training and no pet hair all over the place. Fish keep in an aquarium where you can watch them all the time. This means no running away either. This doesn’t mean that you can throw some fish in a tank and never think about it again. There are basic care procedures for an aquarium.
Daily Requirements
1. Check the aquarium to see if the fish are healthy. You can tell by the color of the fish. If the fish seem to be fading in color, you will want to check the conditions of water. If a fish is stressed, it won’t last long.
2. Feed the fish everyday. Some fish require just one feeding a day where many freshwater fish require two. The most important thing to note is not to overfeed them. If you overfeed, the first are going to die. It shouldn’t take longer than two to five minutes for the fish to eat the food you put in there. If it is taking longer than that or the fish left any food, scoop it out. You don’t want to leave the food in the water and possibly contaminate the aquarium.
3. Check the lights and filters to ensure they are running properly.
Weekly Requirements
4. Check the pH and temperature of the aquarium. This is important for your fish to thrive. Anything outside of the norm will result in damage to the fish. The aquarium is their home and they need it to be as close as possible to the natural habitat. If there are any problems, fix them immediately. You can get pH buffers at a local pet store. If you have warm water fish, check the heater to make sure it is working properly. You can find out the proper water conditions from a book or your local pet shop.
5. Check the filters to see if they need cleaning. The filters usually need to be changed about two to three weeks, but looking them over once a week isn’t going to hurt. The filters are there to clean the water to ensure your fish are getting the right amount of oxygen. The filters will fill with debris and waste. If left untreated, you won’t have any fish left to care for.
6. Changing the water is important to the fish as well. This should be done every week or every two weeks. You won’t change the entire tank though. Start by turning off any plugged in equipment to ensure your own safety. Only change one-third of the water because the fish might not be able to handle harsh changes to the water. Tap water might have to be treated with a purification system or a treatment kit. The water should also be within two degrees of the tank water.
7. Clean inside of the aquarium to remove any algae build up, but do so without bothering the fish. You can do this when changing the water. It is probably easier this way. Collect the algae and debris in a bucket or vacuum.
8. Prune the plants in the tank. There might be some dead leaves that are unsightly and unhealthy.
9. Clean the outside. You can do this with soap and tap water. When you are doing this, also clean the hood.

Maintenance Of Your Aquarium
Posted: Oct 25, 2007 |Comments: 0

]]>
Maintaining an aquarium is quite a godly experience, because you are making a whole new living world within your room. For your aquarium inhabitants, you are the provider and the controller of their environment. But it is not an easy task. You have to be regular in the upkeep of your maintenance, or it could make the tiny life forms within the aquarium unhealthy and they could even die. That is the reason it is always said that only people with an interest in keeping aquariums must enter into the hobby.
There are many short term and long-term things to do when you are into aquarium maintenance. Here is a list of things that you must not miss out on:
1. Daily maintenance:
Everyday, you must check the different components of your aquarium life at least once. Your daily checks must be focused on the filters to see if they are functioning properly. If they are too clogged with waste material, then you must clean them out. You must also check the heaters on a daily basis, and check out the temperature the water is keeping. Outside weather variations will cause different temperatures in the tank, and that is why you will need to change the heater settings several times. Also check the aerator. You will also have to feed your fish twice in a day.
2. Weekly maintenance:
Once a week, preferably on a Sunday since you will have more time that day, change out at least one-tenth of the water in your tank. Replace this with fresh water from an aquarium-friendly source or water. Once a week, you will also need to vacuum out the debris within the tank with an aquarium pump. If your tank is new, then you must check the water for its pH levels on a weekly basis.
3. Monthly maintenance:
Every month, you must change at least one-fourth of the water in your tank. This water must be replaced with clean water that is suitable for your aquarium environment. Within a month, there is a chance that the algal levels within your tank will increase beyond safe limits. Hence, once a month, you will also need to clean out the algae from your fish tanks using whatever suitable method you adopt.
4. Quarterly maintenance:
Test your water once a month if it is crossing conducive pH limits. You must take out all the filters of the tank – mechanical and chemical – and then clean them out thoroughly. Check for algal limits.
5. Half-yearly maintenance:
Your half-yearly aquarium maintenance duties will include removing and replacing the water from the tank. Check if the air stones within your tank are working well. If not, replace them.
6. Annual maintenance:
Once a year, you must clean out all the biological media within your tank apart from doing all the normal aquarium maintenance chores. This includes the gravel and the live rock. You will have to take these components out and rinse them. Gravel needs to be washed entirely. Then replace them into your tank.
The above steps were a basic information guide on aquarium maintenance. However, you must always be wary of changes that are happening in the aquarium and take proper steps to keep it in a healthy condition.

Goldfish Care And Fish Tank Maintenance

]]>
Fish tank maintenance is the first step in goldfish care and is an important part of owning a tank of healthy fish. If maintained regularly, aquarium and goldfish care is relatively easy and takes little time.
If you prefer you can hire an aquarium maintenance service to come to your home or office and care for your fish tank and its occupants. On the other hand, taking care of your aquarium fish yourself can be a satisfying and rewarding experience.
The Steps In Goldfish Care
The most important piece of equipment in your fish tank is the filtration system. There are several different types of filtration system. A type of filter that you will frequently encounter is a box that fits over the side of the tank. The water circulates through the filtration system, which usually uses charcoal or a similar filter media to filter out the impurities in the water. Another type of filtration system is a biological filter. Biological filtration can be used in conjunction with a charcoal filtration system, and permits good bacteria to grow in the tank which helps to keep the tank clean.
The number of fish you have in your aquarium can impact on the water quality, especially if you have too many fish in a tank that is too small. It is important to ensure that you have the correct goldfish population for the size of tank you own. Do not overcrowd your fish. After overcrowding, the next most likely cause of problems with your goldfish is overfeeding. Fish should only be fed an amount they can eat within a few minutes. If you feed your goldfish too much, the uneaten food will fall to the bottom of the tank and turn into sludge which will not provide a healthy environment for your fish to live in. Uneaten food can also lead to algal growth.
Partial Water Changes
You will need to perform partial water changes every two weeks or so as a central part of your goldfish care. This keeps the algae level down and helps to maintain a healthy environment for your goldfish. Typically, siphoning off about 20 percent of the water is adequate. Replace with fresh water. If your tap water contains chlorine it is imperative that you add a chlorine neutralizer when adding fresh water to your fish tank.
Observe Your Fish Daily
Observe your goldfish on a daily basis. Ensure that all your equipment is running properly. Always make sure your filter is running as it can sometimes lose its prime if there is a power outage. Make sure your air pump is working properly, too, to ensure your goldfish have plenty of oxygen. Goldfish don’t need a heater but if you have tropical fish they will require a heater to maintain the water temperature.
Just keeping an eye on your fish on a daily basis and observing their behavior can help with your goldfish care and tank maintenance. If you notice any behavioral problems with your fish, take a proactive approach to determine what is wrong with them and treat the symptoms immediately. Sick fish should be put into a quarantine tank if possible while being treated.
Maintaining a clean aquarium and a healthy living environment are not difficult tasks in goldfish care, and a little preventive fish tank maintenance on a regular basis will keep your fish healthy and disease free.

Alison Stevens is an online author and maintains The Goldfish Site and The Goldfish Blog to assist anyone who wants to get started with setting up an aquarium fish tank and keeping goldfish.
Tank has been up for 3 months, I did use some sand and rock out of 2–55 gallon tanks I had going in my house. One of the 55 gallons was up and running for about 5 years and the other was up for only 3 months befor I came accross this large tank and combined them in to this one. I then asked all of the shops in the area to give my number out to people wanting to take their tanks down. Over a few months obtained 400 lbs of rock to add to the 300 I already had and I was able to obtain from one person about a 1000 dollars worth of pre owned fish. My cost was 00 total for the used rock and fish plus 00 for the tank, stand, 2 emporer 400′s, 2 fluval 404′s, 4 power heads, 2 heaters, 2–250 watt sub compact saltwater light units, 1–250 watt T5 HO saltwater light unit, an Oceanic sump and some other odds and ends ALL USED. My cost so far 00. I am sure that it was a little more for salt, filter media, clamps and such but I did not keep track of that stuff. To get the sump and a 55 gallon refugium tank going I needed some custom over flow box’s that Lifereef is making for me. Those are a bit pricey at 0 for 4x600gallon box’s for a planned total of 2400 gallons of flow. I also will have to buy a pump yet. Total cost will be around 00 over 3 months. Future plan’s are upgrade one of the subcompact light units to a T5 HO unit and move the one of the sub compact units down to the refugium, then I am going to build a canopy to contain all the light that spills out over …

Goldfish Care As Well As Proper Aquarium Maintenance

Proper aquarium maintenance is very crucial in goldfish care. Goldfish are relatively easy to care for and if you maintain your fish tank properly you will see that keeping goldfish health is quite an easy task.
If you feel like you can always hire an aquarium maintenance service which may come to your office or home and take care of your fish. However, it is an always great to take care of your beloved fish yourself. It will give you a lot of satisfaction and pleasure and can be a rewarding experience.
Important steps in goldfish care
Very important equipment in your fish tank is its filtration system. You can choose from a wide range of filtration system available in the. However, the most common one resembles a box which fits over one side of the aquarium. The tank water will circulates through this filtration system and it generally uses charcoal. Again, another variety of filtration system can be biological filter. This type of filter can be used in along with a charcoal filtration as well. One advantage of this filter is that it allows good bacteria to grow inside the tank.
The number of fish you have inside your aquarium is also of extreme importance. This is because it can influence the quality of water. If you have too many fish in a relatively smaller tank the water will tend to deteriorate very fast. So always maintain correct fish population inside the tank. Next you must be careful not to over-feed your goldfish. You must feed that much only which your fish can eat up within a few minutes. Because uneaten food can rot and give birth to bacteria.
Change water partially water
It is always essential to change your tank water partially in every week. In fact it is central to your goldfish’s care. Changing a portion of fish tank water every week will help you to keep the level of alga down and also to maintain a proper environment inside the tank. Moreover, you can siphon around 20 percent of the water in every few days. If your tap water has chlorine in it you must add a chlorine neutralizer before pouring it into the tank.
Observe the behavior of your fish daily
It is always handy to observe the behavior of your goldfish regularly. By doing this you can ensure that everything is fine inside the tank. Always check your filter and see if kit is running properly or not. If you have experience a power cut make sure that the air pump is running well.
Furthermore, if you see any behavioral change in your fish you must know that there should be a cause behind it. You must take a proactive step to determine the cause of this change or else it may hamper your fish in the future.

This is the third video of my NEW 125 gallon aquarium. i used Potatoe stone, and Pea Gravel combined to make it a little more realistic looking. i used drift wood, and plants. I started off with 3 dozen Large goldfish, 30 guppies, 6 black line rasporas, 3 Crawfish and 5 other miscelaneous fish. they all survived the initial introduction to the tank, except goldfish, only about 13 remain lol.. I have 7 turtles, all best friends lol as dumb as that sounds, but it’s true. I have a fluval 405 external canister filter, that filters up to 100 Gallons, and i have a fluval U4 to Filter Out 65 Gallons, although i only need 25 gallons of extra filtration, the more the better.

Freshwater Aquarium Maintenance Tips and Tricks

Aquarium maintenance or aquarium cleaning is vital to maintain a healthy fish aquarium. Done properly it will create a wonderful living picture in your home or business. Your tank fish live in the controlled environment of your freshwater aquarium and you need to control that environment to keep them happy and healthy. Tank maintenance is a process so it’s good practice every time you feed the fish, take a moment to check the overall appearance and condition of the tank and check whether any fish are swimming oddly, not eating or have spots or blotches.
As a professional aquarium cleaner and installer I know that regular changes are a critical aspect of maintaining good water quality and a healthy fish aquarium. You should do a partial water change – say 25% to 30% every four weeks. At the same time clean the gravel, clean the sides of algae, change the filter media and test for water quality. You want to keep the water chemistry as stable as possible. Contaminants such as nitrates and bits of food, leaves and fish waste can stress fish and affect their health.
To perform aquarium maintenance disconnect the electrical heaters, power heads and filters. Leave the air pump running. Replace the filter media. Remove any artificial plants but leave the live ones. Take out and clean any dirty accessories or decorations in the tank (leave some so the fish have places to hide). Use a cleaner/vacuum to clean the base of the tank as food and plant debris can lodge there. Remove the water and gauge this by the water level in the tank. Replace the water with a bucket or a pump. Ideally the temperature of the water you put into the tank should be as close as possible to the water temperature in the tank to reduce stress on the fish.
if you have chlorine or chloromine in your water supply you will need to add de-chlorinator before you put it in the tank. Generally it’s a good idea to test the water weekly. The key parameters are pH and nitrates. pH between 6.5 – 6.9 is suitable for most species as at that level ammonia becomes ammonium and is no longer toxic to the fish. Nitrates should be kept below 30 ppm.
Finally replace the artificial plants and decorations, reconnect the filters, power heads and the heater and you should have a clean fish aquarium. It takes some practice to do this quickly but the reward is a thriving fish or pet aquarium that is truly a living picture.

Easy Freshwater Aquarium Maintenance

One of the ideas that hold many people back from starting up a fish tank is the mistaken belief that it will require constant upkeep and attention. The truth is that most freshwater aquarium maintenance issues are taken care of by proper set-up in the beginning. The rest of the upkeep, as you will see, is not too difficult.
There are definitely some maintenance procedures that need to be done to keep your aquarium running at its best. The key to making the job easier is simply to establish a schedule and make it a habit.
So what are the things that need to be done, how often will they need to be done, and how long will they take?
Aquarium maintenance to-do list:
Water Change – This one is very important. As a general rule, change 15-25% of the water every 2 weeks. You do have a little flexibility on this one, but some tanks may require a bit more. For example, a well-stocked goldfish tank might be better off with a weekly change due to their higher waste output. The key is to set a routine and stick to it. Remember that when doing water changes be sure to condition (de-chlorinate) the water and get it to the right temperature before pouring it in. It would defeat the purpose if you gave the fish clean water that totally shocks them!
Change/Clean the Filter – This should be done approximately every three weeks. It is overkill to do it sooner than that and if you wait too long, the filter becomes much less efficient. Thanks to evolution in filter design over the years, this process is often as simple as pulling out a cartridge and replacing it with a new one (very easy). Do not use any harsh chemicals to clean your filter, as they could harm the fish and also kill the beneficial bacteria that reside in the filter.
“Vacuum” the Tank – What? Depending on how many and what type of fish you are keeping, it may become necessary to clean some of the excess food, feces, plant matter, etc. from the gravel in the bottom of your tank. There are many gravel vacuums available that are essentially a tube connected to a wide end that runs across the bottom. They use siphon action to suck up the gunk and this is a perfect way to get your water change out of the way, too. It is probably not necessary to do this step with every water change, but possibly every other one.
Check Out Your Fish – This may seem like an obvious one since you’ll be looking at the fish daily, at the very least during feedings. But I’m talking about really giving them a close examination. Look for white spots, tattered fins, exceptionally thin or fat fish, erratic swimming, or anything else that doesn’t look quite right. If you do this on a regular basis you can discover and act on any problems before they become life threatening to your fish.
Test Your Water – This is another one that falls under the preventative maintenance category that will keep any small problems from becoming big problems. If the pH, ammonia, or nitrate/nitrite levels are a little out of whack it won’t be a big deal to fix, and the only way to know this is to do a regular water test.
Scrape Algae – Pretty simple: whenever it starts to build up, scrape it off. Again, this is easier if done regularly, before it grows into a thick carpet on the side of the tank. It is a good idea to do this before the water change because scraping will lead to some “floaties” that can be sucked up when siphoning out the water for the change.
Plant Care – If you are keeping live plants in your aquarium they will need a bit of maintenance. Many plants will become uprooted and need to be re-anchored. Some of the fast growers need occasional trimming to keep them from overgrowing your tank, and many plants need a little bit of fertilizer to keep them healthy.
So that is about it. The list may look long, but if you really add it up, you are looking at 1-2 hours every two weeks to cover everything necessary to keep your aquarium in tip top shape. That is nothing compared to the constant enjoyment you get from a happy, healthy tank.

Many domestic dogs wear collars. They are after all a vital means of identification should they become lost. Some of us will even buy our pets designer dog collars to add a touch of style to what otherwise is to all intents and purposes a purely perfunctory adornment. But what may be less familiar to many is dog coats. Not just the bare-basic piece of waterproof to keep out the rain, that is, but a veritable array of hoodies, tweets, overcoats, hunter-coats, fashion clothing and step-in suits.

—DONATE— www.paypal.com oranda goldfish planted aquarium tank All of the Yellow Gouramis (5) and all the young Goldfish from the 60 gallon tank went in here because the larger Goldfish were stealing their food. I added an Eheim Classic canister filter, fine air bubbles and a Coralife 65w compact fluorescent light. The tank already had an AquaClear 70 running. The tank is a little cloudy because some powdered food got in there but that should clear up soon. I may add, if I remember, the new video of the tank with clear water. This was the 29 gallon aquarium. The other fish tank that I have on YouTube is the 60 gal tall aquarium. Both tanks have exactly the same dimensions except that the 60 gal is about 2x as long. The plants in this tankare mainly egeria (or pond weed) but also anubias nana and water sprite

Fish Tank Maintenance

Once you own an aquarium the tank maintenance will be one of your most important responsibilities. It is certainly not as much fun as you get from decorating the tank or selecting your fish, but without proper fish tank maintenance, you will be endangering the lives of your fish.
Fish tank maintenance is an essential part of your new hobby as an aquarist, and neglecting this will lead to problems with both the fish tank and the long-term health of the fish. Fish tank maintenance can sometimes seem like a bother for the aquarium owner but it doesn’t have to be that way. Perform your fish tank maintenance on a regular schedule and you’ll ensure that you never miss out on what needs to be done.
Maintenance
Now that you have learned about establishing a fish tank and you understand the cycling process, you will better understand the process of maintenance and cleaning. If your tank contains too many fish there will be excessive waste, food particles, and chemicals in the water, making maintenance difficult and the tank unhealthy. Set up your tank with a manageable number of fish and develop a schedule for carrying out regular aquarium maintenance tasks and it will make your hobby more enjoyable. Arrange the fish tank so that future tank maintenance tasks remain as easy and efficient as possible.
Cleaning
Your maintenance and cleaning schedule should not take very long to keep your aquarium sparkling and healthy. Cleaning your fish tank not only helps with the appearance of the tank by removing algae but can also prolong the life of your fish, as no pet can live in an unhealthy environment. Algae can be removed from the tank glass with an algae magnet or scraper. Remember to regularly remove any dead leaves from live plants. Do not overfeed your fish as this will cause excess waste in the water which will settle at the bottom of the tank and need to be removed.
Filter Maintenance
Aquarium maintenance must include regular cleaning of the filtration system as well as the interior of the tank. Cleaning the filter is usually a monthly task. This involves removing the filter medium and cleaning it under running water. When the filter medium becomes too worn it will need to be replaced. Remember, however, that the filtration system also contains “good bacteria” which aids in the breaking down of ammonia and balancing the nitrites in the tank, so rinse the filter quickly to remove large particles but do not be over-zealous in your cleaning.
Once you have your fish tank setup and cycling correctly, you need to set a schedule for cleaning that is strictly followed. Fish tank maintenance is an important aspect of your setup and it is necessary to integrate this into your overall scheme.
Some aquarium owners perform too much fish tank maintenance. Ideally you want the fish tank to become a self-sustaining system and not one where you are burdened with fish tank maintenance all the time. Establish a regular schedule for cleaning and maintenance every two to three weeks and your fish should remain healthy and happy and your aquarium should sparkle.
