Both salt water and fresh water fishes require the aquarium to be warm and heated. Both of these are tropical variety of fishes and they prefer their water hot. Goldfishes are not to be worried about as they prefer cold water and hence no need for a heater. During winter seasons shops get calls from people wondering about the strange behaviour or death of their fishes. This can be attributed to the lack of heat in the tanks. The cold weather results in a general fall in the room temperature resulting in the tank becoming colder too. Even if there is just a drop of one degree in 24 hours it can cause havoc by causing the fish a disease called ‘ich’ or maybe even kill them!
While purchasing a heater take a look at the choices. A cheap heater might give problems as they can break, the thermostat may not be strong and this could leave the tank’s heat in the lurch. There are the medium priced heaters and this is what most people buy. Most of these have pretty good thermostats and are pretty much worth the money paid for them. But in a period of around six months you might have to change the heater as the element responsible for heating might not function effectively after that period!
Make sure you check the heater on and off during the week also ensure the temperature in the tank is right everyday so that you can be sure the fishes are not having a hard time! Make sure it is neither extreme, you do not want to freeze your fish but neither do you want to boil them. This calls for regulated temperatures.
Try to place the heater next to the filter as this can help in distributing the heat produced. Your fish will thus not suffer from either cold or hot spots. Heating the tanks is very essential and this has to be made sure of during the required seasons.

If you own fish, you know there are many things that go into taking care of them. If you have different kinds of fishes, you might find yourself with a checklist on how to maintain all the animals in your aquarium. Despite there being many different fish and different techniques for fish care, there are some aspects of aquariums and fish care that are constant, no matter if you have a salt water or fresh water fish.
It’s important to follow the steps in fish care. Fish are solely dependent on humans when living in an aquarium whether it’s just a tiny bowl in your home or a massive one to house whales. There are many similarities in the care of fish in different types of aquariums. Learn the exact things your fish is going to need because with over 20,000 species, each fish will need something different.
1. Temperature: Keeping your fish tank or aquarium at the right temperature is important. Fish can’t regulate temperature and are at the mercy of their care handlers in this case. The first thing you need to do is learn what temperature your respective fish need to thrive. There are dehumidifiers and humidifiers available to help regulate water temperature. These tools also help maintain a balanced environment. You will have a thermometer and other gauges constantly in the water testing it. This is to ensure the water temperature maintains a certain level.
2. Toxins: Another element to consider for aquarium in fish care is the toxins level. Naturally, fish produce waste, all life forms do. In a closed environment the waste has no where to go and will cling to everything it can. If the water is not clean, the toxins will harm the fish. In nature, there are natural things that fight the battle with toxins such as bacteria, moss and other types of life forms. Your aquarium doesn’t have this. It only has you. So it’s important to clean the tank regularly.
3. Chloramines: There are additives found in water supply that will find its way into a fish tank. Chloramines are one that is used to purify water. It limits the growth of harmful bacteria. The bacteria can grow anywhere in water supply (pipes, faucets, ground water) and at times will find its way into an aquarium. To get rid of chloramines you can mix 1 milligram of sodium thiosulfate with 10 gallons of fresh water. This combination will remove toxins and other harmful contaminants.
4. Water: The water is the most important thing because this is how the fish sustain life. They breathe using the oxygen in the water. The water has to be tested often to ensure the levels of different substances. There are test kits available in pet shops that you will use to test for metals (a tank and its equipment are metal and metal could be found in water supply), toxins, pH level and other containments. You will need to add filters to the water to help maintain a balance. Pre-treated water is often used as well, this is the water combined with sodium thiosulfate.
Having fish can be a lot of fun. Many people find aquariums soothing and relaxing. However, like many other animals, fish have to be maintained. When taken out of their natural environment and brought into the home, they rely on you for their life support. The first step is giving them a great home with all the proper care. There are several hobbies one can have that turn in to real passion some day. One among them is maintaining an aquarium. This hobby though is a serious one as there is no room for mistakes else you shall land up harming or killing a living creature.

But before diving in to this interesting field here are some essential tips to remember:
1. In order to maintain your fish tank well enough, you must understand the nitrogen cycle. This cycle involves nitrates, ammonia and nitrites. The fishes naturally produce these chemicals in the water they live in. Its your job to balance these chemicals so that the water remains healthy for your fishes to survive.
2. The beginners in this hobby find it difficult to balance the ammonia in the water. In that case you could consider banking on the starter kits available online. These kits contain additives like ammonia. Basically these kits supply you with a mechanism to artificially control the degree of ammonia in the fish tank.
3. These kits also guide you through or at times make available the apt beginner fishes. These types of fishes naturally produce ammonia in an adequate amount.
4. In case you are beginning with a coldwater tank, the best option would be to have a goldfish.
5. Make sure that your fish tank contains ample amount of plants. They not only beautify the fish tank but also purify the water in the tank by absorbing the chemicals & providing oxygen.
6. The water plants break down water and ammonia. Then these plants filter the ammonia & the bad or contaminated pat of the water that is the portion that contains bacteria.
7. Plants maintain the balance between all the chemicals in the fish tank as the fishes produce lot of ammonia.
8. When you are ammonizing your fish tank with the starter fish, be very sure of the quantity of food you are feeding to the fish. Remember that you should feed only small amounts of the food initially.
9. The food that remains settles down at the bottom and rots down finally. This rotten food develops severely toxic chemicals that can kill your fish. So try to maintain the least amount of remaining food. The trick to do it simply is to watch your fish while feeding them. Only put in the amount of food it consumes in the first 2-3 minutes, that to only twice a day. In case of food, also make sure to read through the label of the fish that you always get on the purchase of the fish.
10. Make proper use of the test kits and make sure that you check the ammonia level in the water at regular intervals that is every week.
11. Usually, a proper ammonization process takes about 5 weeks or longer.
12. Before purchasing the fish tank make sure that you purchase the right stand to place this tank well.
13. Remember, the fish tank must not be exposed to direct sunlight and heaters, else more and more algae would develop in the tank thereby killing your fish.
14. Make sure that the gravel you add to the fish tank is absolutely clean. In case you have purchased boiled gravel, rinse it well before adding it to the tank. Else, you must boil it first and then rinse it and then add it to the tank.
15. The right way of adding gravel to the fish tank is to initiate from the back of the tank and then coming to the front.
16. The height of the gravel you add depends on the type of fish and the type of filter you would use. This is more particular for the front of the tank. The gravel layer in the front of the tank must be very light.
17. In case you are using under-gravel filters, the front layer of gravel would be very low.
18. Ideally, installing the filters and heaters is the last step in preparing the fish tank. But in case you are considering using a powered filter, you must install the filter before adding the gravel.
19. After adding the gravel, the next step is to add plants and other ornaments. Make sure that you rinse these additives well enough in order to maintain the purity of the water in the tank.
20. Be sure to select only marine based plants.
21. Initially fill the tank with only half of the total required quantity. Make use of pre-treated water while filling the tank halfway.
22. Once you are done with all the additives you can fill it up with water fully.
23. After filling in the tank with all the water required, keep a regular check on temperature of the water with a thermometer.
24. Now finally, place the filters in the fish tank.
25. Goldfish can be added to your fish tank at the beginning of the ammonization process. In case you are planning to purchase any other, fish you must wait for a few weeks so that the ammonization process gets completed in the fish tank.
26. Also, be sure that you do not add any new fish to the tank until and unless the water in there is crystal clear.
27. Check that the ideal way is to introduce only one fish at a time, and gradually increase the number of fishes in the tank. You could also consider starting with 4 different types of hardy fishes, one of each type.
28. The right way to add a fish in the tank is that you must afloat the fish in a bag in to the aquarium for around 15 minutes prior to leaving them in the tank. This would help your fish get acclimated to the temperature of the water in its new home.
29. Make sure that you do not add the water of the fish bag in to the aquarium as this water might be contaminated, or would at times affect the temperature of the aquarium and the P.H. level of the water in there.
30. You must check that the aquarium has the right amount of lighting. These lights are teamed with a hood that can be fit over the top of the aquarium. The fact is that most of the aquariums these days come along with a hood. Actually, the hood keeps away the critters and maintains the fish inside the tank. The hood id also used to regulate the lights in the tank.

Getting a fish tank is only the first step in setting up a home aquarium. There are many tools you will need to maintain an aqauriums. These tools range from cleaning tools (vacuums, scrubs, bucks, siphons) to ornamental and necessary equipment.
1. Necessary Tools
Filters: A filter is probably the most important piece of equipment for your aquarium. Without it, the fish won’t survive. When looking at filters you are going to have to find one that is large enough for the aquarium. There is a possibility that you are going to need more than one. Filters come in three varities: external, internal and under gravel. External filters are best, but also cost the most. The undergravel are cheapest, but are comparitively less effective. You can combine a mixture of the filters if you desire.
Heaters: If you are going to care for tropical fish, you need a heater. This will keep the water between 70 to 80 degrees or more if your fish need it. If you have freshwater fish, this may not be needed. Make sure you get a heater that is big enough to maintain the aquarium.
Test kits: These littel kits are used to test different elements in the water. You need to test the pH level, ammonia and nitrate levels. Fish need different conditions to live, so you have to make sure they all right. If not, these conditions need to be addressed immediately. You should also get a thermometer because you need to keep track of temperature for both freshwater and saltwater fish.
2. Ornamental Tools
Gravel: There are different ways to line the bottom of the tank, but most people prefer gravel. When looking for gravel to purchase, look for the pre-washed one. If you don’t get it pre-washed, you are going to have to cleanse the gravel yourself. This requires boiling it to remove any bacteria to clean it. Check with any pet store employees because the gravel might effect the pH level of the tank.
Toys: You’ve seen the little toy chest and toy submerged man. When getting these toys check with the pet shop employee on the care. These usually require cleaning as well.
Plants: If you are going to purchase live plants, find marine plants that are going to thirve underwater. You don’t want them to grow above the water line. The other thing you want consider when it comes to this if the fish you are getting are going to eat your plants. If so, get plastic ones.
3. Cleaning tools
This a broad category that is going to have many different items in it. You are going to need a bucket to use to transfer water when cleaning the tank. You can also get a bucket to hold the fish in when cleaning out the aquarium. A scrub brush and scraper will come in handy when cleaning the algae off the sides of the tank. You can purchase plastic gloves to keep yourself clean during the process. Cleaning isn’t a fun part to owning a fish tank, but a necessary one.
If you don’t clean the fish tank, the fish won’t thrive. Waste and excretions will eventually build up to the point that the filter can’t even control. This is vital to life of the fish.
While this isn’t the beginning at the end of a list, this will prove a great place to get started. Ask around and talk to people who have aquariums to see what other tools and equipment you are going to need.
