What Saltwater Aquarium Supplies Do You Need

There are some fundamental marine aquarium supplies needed to run a saltwater aquarium. These include an aquarium, lighting, skimmers, filters & filtration equipment, live rock and substrate, power head, sea salt mix/saltwater & hydrometer, heater, thermometer, air pump & air stones, test kits, additives & supplements, maintenance tools & supplies. There are many UK aquatic and marine supplies companies that are listed on searchme4, UK’s leading online business directory.
First and foremost, choose the style and size of your aquarium. Remember, saltwater aquariums should be at least fifty gallons, especially since some saltwater fish can grow to up to eighteen inches Carefully decide on a permanent place for your fish tank, avoid direct sunlight, and do not keep it in a place with sudden temperature changes, for instance by the front door or across a window since the sun will create an imbalance in the water salinity, nitrite, pH and ammonia levels.
Most fish tanks are made of glass or acrylic and are available in custom made design and size. Next, decide on the type of lighting you want for your livestock, most fish tanks come with attached lighting however, you can also buy stylish lighting to hang inside your aquarium. Sea salts are the main component of a saltwater or marine aquarium. Maintenance tools & supplies such as plastic buckets or containers, siphon tube/hose, an algae scraper or magnet, fish nets are important to keep at home.
Water filtration is essential for aquatic pets to survive, the levels of ammonia and nitrate should be kept well below detectable levels. Choosing the right skimmers, filters & filtration equipment depends on the size of the tank, the type and the fish that will live in it. The filtration system in your fish tank should reduce the amount & effects of wastes, stabilize the water chemistry, provide good water movement (current) and ensure that the oxygen is correctly dissolved in the water.
The currents help in removing waste products and residue that promote algae growth, feed and nourish aquatic pets, and burn off excess fat found in many products of fish food. Sand filters, also known as fluidised bed filters, are comprised of a tube filled with sand. The elevated water circulation keeps the sand free of waste. Sand filters are quite new and are very efficient biological filters perfect for any aquarium size. Aquarium protein skimmers are used in saltwater aquariums to physically eliminate organic compounds before they start to break down into nitrogenous waste.

We set up our aquarium and added 5 goldfish in a 10 gallon tank. It was set up on Saturday, March 1st, without any fish. We had the filter running to let it cycle. We added the fish on Tuesday. In this video I showed how it was set up. We had Mr. Bean in there but he floated so we took him out. I added music and did some fast and slow motion to harmonize with the music. Saltwater Tank: What Saltwater Fish Tank Supplies You Need

There are a number of saltwater tank supplies and equipment you will need to have a healthy environment for your saltwater fish. Being familiar and knowing each element is crucial, but it does not have to be overwhelming. You will find that when most of the saltwater tank supplies are set up you will not need to maintenance them too much. Most of your maintenance will be in cleaning and water testing.
Some of the more common saltwater tank supplies you will need are: thermometer, filters, pumps, lighting, a heater, sea salt mixes, and water testing kits. Each one of these tools have an effect on your saltwater fish tank. The kind of supplies you will need also depends on what you will put in your fish tank. If you are going to have reef tank you will need more equipment that is more sensitive and if you have just a fish tank you will find there is less equipment and more ‘slack’ in some of the tank monitoring.
While all the saltwater tank supplies are easy to use, you will need to be familiar with each one. There are numerous resources on the internet you can find to teach you and you should also consult a local expert as well.
People often comment on how hard or how much work their saltwater tank takes. This is normally due to lack of knowledge before they got started. Some people will go for a huge tank of 100 gallons or more, while some people think smaller is easier and get a 10 gallon tank. For beginners it is recommended that you look at saltwater tanks in the sizes of 30-50 gallons. These sizes allow for a person to get use to the care of a saltwater tank, but it also gives the most room for error. Large and small tanks require more specific care because you are either needing to tend to bigger area with more marine life to care for or deal with how picky a small tank is with no room for error.

Protein Skimmer : What You Need To Know

(ArticlesBase SC #2788513)
Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Protein Skimmer : What You Need To Know
Protein Skimmer is used widely in saltwater aquarium or fish tank to remove any organic compounds before they break down into nitrogenous waste and pollute the water. Basically, you can say that protein skimmer device is the form of aquarium filtration that removes organic compounds just before they start to decompose. Protein skimming works by releasing thousands of micro bubbles from mixing water and air, the smaller the bubbles the more effective the protein skimming is. To produce these bubbles, protein skimmer needs needle wheel, venture pump, counter current, and air stone.
These micro bubbles will attract different wastes and force them to reach the skimmer’s chamber. As the bubbles reach the top of the protein skimmer water column, the water begins to drain and create the foam. This foam will then carry the organic molecules to the skimmate collection cup to separate any waste and organic molecules. Any inorganic molecules that somehow bound to the organic ones will be exported back to the water. Several types of molecules that usually removed in the process are: fats, fatty acids, metals, and carbohydrates. This removal is wanted by most aquarists. In fact, they usually place the protein skimmer as the first form of aquarium filtration to lessen the burden of the filtration system as a whole.
Having protein skimmer as your filtration system is often considered unnecessary. Well, if you just have a small aquarium with just a few fish inside, it’s not necessary to use protein skimmer. You can just use standard filtration system. However, if you are serious in maintaining your water quality, it is suggested that you use protein skimmer. Some even need super skimmer to keep the water quality at certain level. This is where Coralife Super Skimmer comes in handy, it makes your hobby more enjoyable by preventing fish loss. There are various types of super skimmer from Coralife to suit the size of your salt water aquarium.

Reef Tanks and What You Need to Know Before You Start One

Reef Tanks and What You Need to Know Before You Start One
A reef aquarium is vastly different from a fish only aquarium. Not only will you need different equipment, but you will need a whole different skill to create and maintain a successful reef tank. Although you can keep fish in your reef tank, the main focus of a reef tank is to display live coral. Introducing certain species of fish can help in maintaining the reef environment and special care should be taken when selecting the appropriate species to compliment the coral in your tank.
Reef tanks are primarily filtered by the live rock through a natural process. This biologic filtration is usually supplemented by protein skimmers. Protein skimmers use what is called the foam fracture process to eliminate waste matter and filter the water. A combination of biological filtration and protein skimmers is very effective at keeping a reef tank in ideal condition.
Unlike fish only tanks, reef tanks require constant water movement. Different types of coral require different flow rates, but as a rule of thumb, a flow rate of 10x will be sufficient. What this means is that the flow rate needs to be 10 times the capacity of the tank (in gallons) per hour. It’s important that you adjust and fine tune the flow rates to the specific coral in your tank.
One of the most popular methods of creating water flow is by using power heads. They are simply small water pumps under the water that creates an underwater stream when you alternately switch them on an off. By using a wave timer, the pumps are synced to create a water flow. A newer method for creating and managing water flow is the use of submersible propeller pumps. Although they are more expensive, they use less power and can produce greater water flow compared to power heads.
Another important aspect of reef tanks is lighting. While fish only tanks use lighting primarily for display, a reef tank needs light to “feed” the coral. Since the coral uses photosynthesis to stay alive, lighting is the most important aspect of keeping your coral alive.
The lighting levels required for each type of coral varies widely. While some types of rock require very high levels of light, some only need low light levels. Special care should be taken when picking coral for your tank to ensure that the lighting of your tank is sufficient. As a general rule 5 to 8 watts per gallon should be sufficient for the most common coral.

Why Do I Need To Get A Protein Skimmer For My Aquarium?

Why Do I Need To Get A Protein Skimmer For My Aquarium?
When you are building a new fish aquarium, you will no doubt come across a great deal of expensive technology that may seem entirely unnecessary. You’ll probably find yourself questioning if all these things are really necessary. The most important pieces of kit you will need are a tank, a water filter, a light, and your selection of fish, along with food and some treatments. However, if you’re going to keep certain types of fish you will need some additional equipment to create a healthy environment. These kinds of equipment is sometimes necessary to maintain salt-water tanks as salt-water species of fish require a very different natural environment.
One such piece of equipment you might hear of is a protein skimmer. Protein skimmers will help to remove particles from the aquarium that, if left in the water, will eventually turn into harmful substances. They are crucial to the health of salt water fish. Without proper filtration the water would inevitably become too rich in ammonia for the fish to withstand. They would ultimately become sick or even die as a result.
If you have salt-water fish in your aquarium you will definately need a protein skimmer. This need becomes even more pronounced if your aquarium contains rocks and plants. These things are known to create a great deal more particles that will need to be removed from the water before they can change into harmful substances. A standard water filter alone will not be able to cleanse the water of these substances. As a matter of fact, there are many harmful particles that are much too small to be removed by standard filtration systems. This is why you need a protein skimmer. Protein skimmers assist in keeping the water in your aquarium clean and healthy. Because fish are so delicate, you might also consider buying a protein skimmer that’s rated for a bigger tank than you currently have. That way it will never be overloaded by the nitrates and ammonia in your tank.

Saltwater And Freshwater Aquariums – What You Need To Know
Having a saltwater aquarium can be fun and rewarding or can be upsetting if a person lacks knowledge on the proper and right ways of taking care of fish especially in the saltwater aquarium.
Setting up one requires some equipment to be used for the success of your saltwater aquarium. Filters and air pump are some of the most important facilities. Some decorations can be added such as sand and gravels, which sometimes varies in different colors. You can also include plastic or real plants, castle or miniatures ship and other fancy decorations in the aquarium, but just be very careful that it won’t clutter inside. Light is also essential in saltwater aquarium for the enhancement of the color of the aquarium and especially the fishes survival.
Saltwater aquarium requires three types of filtration. One is the Biological filtration, which involves the removal of the bacteria, which is often created by the fish on its activities, and processes that it undergoes inside the tank. Second, the chemical filtration that is more on the removing of the discoloration and chemicals on the water that harms the fish inside the tank. Third, is the mechanical filtration, which deals more with the removal of the visible materials floating on the aquarium such as uneaten fish foods, wastes of the fishes and other squanders floating or at the bottom of the saltwater aquarium, and this job is commonly done by the net.
There are many considerations regarding the proper ways in keeping the fish alive in a saltwater aquarium, unlike freshwater aquariums; saltwater aquarium is more difficult to set up. One very good example is mixing saltwater. We must remember that water evaporates while the salt is left, which means that the salinity of the water on the tank always varies, which can cause harm especially on the fishes inside the aquarium. A hydrometer may help you track the salinity of the water and add some salt to get the right salinity content of the water.
Beginners can set up their saltwater aquarium depending on what they like. You can just put fish only in the aquarium, or fish with full reef ambience, or whatever design you want, as long as it you make sure that the fish inside the aquarium would be able to survive.
Experienced aquarists and experts say that we must always find the perfect place for the aquarium in the house. If the location of your saltwater aquarium is always struck by sunlight, it may result to changes on the temperature of the water on the tank and would produce more algae due to the sun and its UV rays, which may harm your fish inside the aquarium.
Some people find taking care of fishes as a pet difficult. The reason behind this maybe is that they lack familiarity or they were not given the right information on the proper ways on taking care of the aquarium as well as the fishes inside, but the truth is, it is not that much difficult at all.
There are several steps to be considered in order to become successful on taking care of freshwater fishes.
First step is to have all the equipments to be used on the aquarium or fish tank. One is the filtration equipment, which is responsible for keeping and maintaining the cleanliness and freshness of the water on the tank and you need an air pump to keep the water on the tank aerated and to produce oxygen for the fish or plants inside the tank.
Decorations such as gravel, sand, and plants that can be plastic or real ones, depending on your choice, are great ideas as well. There are also some decorations nowadays made of plastic such as a fortress, vessel, shells and other fancy garlands and some aquarium backgrounds, which are commonly underwater views. Lights also give a very desirable effect on the enhancement of color in the aquarium and gives real plants inside chlorophyll for them to grow. However, beware of putting different decorations inside the tank because it may just pollute the water or just muddle the water inside. Always remember that fishes needs space for them to swim.
There must also be a cover on the aquarium to protect dust or other materials going into the tank. A stand for the aquarium also plays a vital role in keeping the balance of the tank. Other cleaning materials is also important such as a net, chlorine remover, heater for keeping the right temperature of the water and most importantly, fish food.
Some of the best advices is to be careful in feeding the fish because over feeding of fish may result to harm. There are also some people who put too many fishes on their aquarium, do not forget that some fish fights and it might cause inadequate supply of oxygen for the fish and real plants inside the tank if there are too many fishes on the tank.

Natural Sunlight And The Sunroom Enclosure: What You Need To Know

Natural Sunlight And The Sunroom Enclosure: What You Need To Know
Your home is your most important investment, and a sunroom can be the most important addition to your investment. Give a thought to what you need to ensure that you’ll be able to enjoy your sunroom as you expect.Your home is one of the most important investment you will make in your life. It can also be one of the most expensive investments you’ll make. If you decide that you need more room and would like to add an addition to your home, you have several choices. You can add an additional room built in the same manner as the original architecture of the house, or you can add on a new and elegant sunroom.
There are many reasons to choose the sunroom. With a room with walls of glass, you’ll be able to see out unfettered to enjoy every bit of your back garden, your trees, birds and squirrels, or your children busily playing. You won’t have to be concerned with the oppressive heat of the day, unpleasant gusts of wind should the day be a cool one, or the ever-present insects that can spoil the most beautiful of days.
Natural sunlight. That’s what you get from a room with walls of glass…you won’t need to bother with the harsh lights of a lightbulb if you don’t feel the need. But you don’t want sunlight to come pouring into the room without hindrance – you’ll find yourself squinting or feeling the need for sunglasses. However, with the proper type of glass, much of the light given off by the sun can be filtered out, so there’ll be no annoying glare to spoil your pleasure of the room.
A room with walls of glass need to be insulated just as do walls of wood or brick. Most sunroom companies offer their own trademarked glass – they have engineers who spend their time trying to design the most efficient glass possible.
What do you need in glass for a sunroom?
You have to consider the R-Value. This measures the thermal resistance of a material, or how easily heat travels through it. The higher the R-Value, the greater the insulation – and the lower your energy cost swill be. An R-Value of 4.0 is suggested for the very best comfort.
Give a thought to the percentage of visible light transmitted through the glass. A visible light transmittance below 60 percent is is recommended for that glare-free natural lighting, as I mentioned above
And then there’s the heat of the sun. Relative Heat Gain measures the heat gained through a glazing, and, indeed, can be more important to a glass room than the R-Value. You don’t want a room that will be unbearably hot or expensive to keep cool. With a type of glass that doesn’t gain a lot of heat, you’ll ensure that that won’t be the case.
In these days, it’s possible to build a sunroom in anything from a few days to a week or so. And although sunrooms are pricey – you simply must not skimp on quality – they can be less expensive than traditional brick and mortar extensions.
DIY Sunroom Kits
If you’d like to have a sunroom but you don’t want to have to pay a contractor to build it for you, you can always do it yourself. Most manufacturers offer do-it-yourself kits so that the handy home owner can be in charge of its construction from the beginning. You’ll want to carefully gauge your skills and stick-to-it-tiveness if you choose this route. The addition of a sunroom can increase the value of your home, but only if it is built correctly. But if you have the necessary skills, you can indeed do it yourself.
The skills needed may vary. If you’re going to build your sunroom onto a pre-existing deck or porch, you won’t need as many skills as you would if you were going to build an entire room from scratch – necessitating the grading and preparation of a concrete slab on which to put the new structure. And if you intend to extend your home’s heating and cooling system into the new room, that calls for another set of skills.
Sunroom Indoor Furniture
There’s a vast array of furniture for the sunroom. Even though a great deal of harmful sunlight will be blocked out, you’ll still want to go with furniture with removable cushions, so that you can replace any that fade. Wicker is the traditional furniture for the sunroom, but there’s nothing to say you can’t use elegant metals or wood. The addition of green plants and an aquarium or two will certainly add an elegant touch.
Most people use their sunroom as a family room, or a place for solitude and reflection. But some people like to experiment and put their kitchen into a sunroom, or their bedroom and even their bathroom. Those are something to think about, but with the complexities of the glass and the designs of the room, you might want to just stick with the tradition uses of a room with walls of glass.

What You Need For Your Discus Fish
Aug 31st
What You Need For Your Discus Fish
You’ve been to every local fish store in your area. You’ve spent hours online looking at Discus galleries. You’ve started thinking of things you can sell to pay for the Discus fish and aquarium set up. You’ve put your couch in the garage to make room for the aquarium. It sounds like you’ve been bitten by the Discus bug. Now, how do you get started?
There are as many opinions on how to properly raise Discus as there are websites devoted to them. You will find debates over planted tank vs. bare bottom, tap water or RO, what to feed them, how often to change the water and how much, it goes on and on. These debates contribute to making Discus keeping fun or a real pain. It really depends on your likes and dislikes. If you enjoy the excitement and challenge of learning something new and are able to successfully translate many different opinions into “what works best for you”, then keeping Discus will be a fun rewarding undertaking which you can enjoy for years to come. With that being said, the following are some guidelines to what I’ve learned over the years and what works best for me in setting up a new Discus aquarium.
Equipment
In choosing the tank, start with a minimum tank size of 50 gallons. Make sure you have a suitable place to set up your aquarium. You will want a very sturdy support for your tank which you will position in a location that doesn’t receive direct sunlight. The filtration system will be made up of two extra large sponge filters run by an air pump along with an external box filter such as an Aqua Clear properly rated for your tank size and containing a pre-filter sponge on the intake tube. You will need a heater with a ratio of 5watts/gallon, meaning a tank size of 50 gallons would require a 250 watt heater. The tank needs to be covered and there are hood options available when you purchase your tank. You will want one with a lighting strip as well as a cover for the tank. In a pinch you can always pick up a piece of Plexiglass from your local hardware store and cut it to fit. In order to keep the tank clean and maintained, you will need a siphon hose, a five gallon bucket and a clean utility sponge.
Preparing for Your Discus’ Arrival
You will want to have your aquarium cycled before adding your Discus. This means that the beneficial bacteria has been established in your filtration. There are many methods of cycling your tank so be sure to do your research and choose the option that fits for you. It is a very important step and is absolutely necessary. Putting your new Discus in a tank that hasn’t been cycled is a death sentence for the fish.
Buying Your Discus Fish
An absolute must is starting with healthy Discus. If you are lucky enough to have a reputable breeder in your area you are ahead of the game. If not, mail order is also an exciting option. There’s a real rush and excitement to having Discus delivered to your front door. Make sure to research any online vendor you may want to order from. There are some great breeders out there with a great selection. On the downside shipping usually runs from – depending on the service. If mail order isn’t an option and you are left with your local fish store you’ll need to take some precautions and do your best to pick out healthy fish. If possible try to find a shop that specializes in higher end tropical fish and avoid chain stores. Find out what the shop’s quarantine and guarantee policies are. Ask them how long the Discus should be quarantined once you get them home. If their answer is “you don’t need to”, this is a major red flag. Ask questions to get a feel for how well they support and care for their product.
So, what does a healthy Discus look like? Here a some things to look for in the Discus you buy:
When you walk by the tank, the fish should be active and come up to greet you. Avoid fish that are dark, hiding or hanging behind uplift tubes. The water in the tank and the tank itself should look clear and clean. If there are dead fish in the tank keep walking. Now, (if you haven’t left the store) look at the fish, they should have a full body that doesn’t look sunken and is free of scrapes, bumps, visible injuries and or parasites. The body shape should have a nice round appearance void of bent, stubbed tails and flat foreheads. Check the skin and make sure it doesn’t have a dull, matte, or slimy look to it. The fins should look healthy and not have a cottony or milky appearance. The fins should be intact with no white specs or splits and not be clamped to the body. The Discus should be using both pectoral fins to move about. Watch for how the fish are breathing. An overly rapid gill rate or if the Discus looks to be gasping is a good sign of gill parasites. The fishes movement should be fluent and have no problem with balance. You don’t want to pick a fish that can’t hold itself level. The eyes of your Discus should have a healthy clean look to them. The eyes are a good indicator of how well it’s been taken care of. You will want a fish with small eyes compared to its body with a centered pupil. Big or bulging eyes are usually a sign of neglect. Ask to see the Discus eat. Be wary if they feed live blood worms or tubiflex worms. Watch to make sure the fish are able to easily get the food into their mouth. Avoid fish that continually miss the food that is right in front of them or don’t seem interested in eating. Most 2″-3″ Discus wont have full body color or pattern at this size.
Installing Your Discus
For the proposed 50 gallon setup you will want to purchase from six to ten, two – three inch juvenile Discus. Young Discus like the security of numbers. Make sure you follow standard acclimation procedures and that your tank is fully cycled as stated above. As your fish grow and mature a pecking order will develop. Eventually the smaller weaker Discus will need to be removed in order to keep a 10 gallon to 1 Discus rule. In order to provide an easy way to keep a clean environment for your new fish, use a bare aquarium. That means no gravel or plants. The bare bottom tank makes it easy to vacuum fish waste and wipe down the glass. If you’d like, you can add a ceramic pot or two to give your Discus an anchor to establish territories but the pots will need to be moved and wiped down with your water changes to ensure they aren’t trapping waste. Once a week you will want to clean your pre filter and every few weeks, your sponge and box filters, being careful to use de-chlorinated water as to not harm the beneficial bacteria. A good tip here is to syphon some tank water into your five gallon bucket and use that for your filter cleaning water.
Discus Water
Clean water is a crucial element in growing out your fish. You will want to match the water conditions as closely as possible to that of the source of your Discus. Daily changes of 50 to 60 percent is recommended and at least on an every other day schedule. You will want to provide new tap water that has been de-chlorinated and matches closely to the tank water in temperature at 84 degrees. Avoid using RO water for young Discus, they need the minerals of harder water to aid in there development. Once they have matured and if you’re interested in breeding them you can dabble with softening their water. If you have purchased Discus from different places you will need to keep them quarantined separately for 4 – 6 weeks. Don’t Cheat!
Feeding Your Discus
Your new Discus should greet you at the front of the tank with a voracious appetite. Happy healthy Discus are always hungry. You will want to break up their feedings over several times during the day adding up to six small feedings. Feed a variety of foods using quality brands of dry and frozen foods. A good tip is to feed dry foods which your fish may not like as much early when they’re hungry from their overnight fast. Feed messy or frozen foods later in the day closer to your water changes.
The Discus hobby is a great one. It has its ups and downs just like anything. If you enjoy not only the beauty of the fish but actually watching their behavior, growth and and interaction, Discus keeping will stick with you. There’s a lot to learn and this is just a small start. Make sure you do a lot of reading and ask lots of questions. Start with healthy Discus, keep their water and tank very clean, feed them well, and you’re sure to succeed!
