Growing aquarium plants is a great way to beautify your aquarium and create a better ecosystem in your tank. There is no comparison between live and fake plants, and they can provide a more healthy environment for fish and other aquatic life. But a fish aquarium can also be a great way to grow plants outside of the aquarium.
In a fish aquarium you have to constantly add food to the system. Then you need a filter to remove the waste materials from the water that the fish produce from the food. This is usually done with a mechanical filter, but plants can also make a great filter. Plants will clean the water while they extract valuable nutrients from the water. With a good balance between fish, plants, and friendly bacteria, you can have a healthy aquarium without a mechanical filter, that will mostly clean itself.
Some people like to have plants with the roots hanging directly in the aquarium, but this can be hard to do for most plants and can be unsightly and get in the way of lights. Roots can make good habitat for fish, but will also be eaten by some fish. A sometimes better way to grow plants with your fish water is to make a small hydroponic system where you pump the water into a grow bed and then allow it to flow back to the aquarium. You may be able to do this with your existing filter pump. And the way some filters are made, you can easily convert them to a grow bed.
Plants can be grown in floating rafts or a medium like gravel. Many people are using this kind of system to grow all kinds of plants including vegetables. And the great thing is, it is all organic and is known for producing good garden quality vegetables.
There are many commercial farms and home gardeners that are using this technique with amazing results. Many are growing food fish like tilapia as well as others and producing both vegetables and fish as their crop. But it also works just as well with a simple home aquarium.
This process is called aquaponics, a combination of hydroponics and aquaculture. With plenty of water and high quality nutrients from the fish water, plants grow fast and healthy and allow you to grow much more in a smaller space. It is also a very trouble free way to grow plants with no weeding and no soil to deal with.

Gravel is essential to your aquarium most especially if you are using natural plants. It will help in holding plant roots and provide the foundation for the biological and under gravel filtration. Since gravel comes in different sizes and colours, the advised size is 4 to 6 millimeters because it provides flow for an undergravel filter and the most popular is quartzite or granite.
If your fish disturb the plants and damage them by nibbling of the leaves or digging up the roots, caves and wood can be a better solution than plants. If uprooting is the main problem, you can choose plants that float and do not require any anchorage in the substrate. If your fish are vigorous plant eaters, artificial plants can be used instead of live plants.
It is a good idea to regulate the CO2 either using the system or manually because fish will suffer if there is too much CO2 in the water. Rough guides for carbon dioxide suggest that 30 to 45 mg per litre of water is enough for plants to thrive but over 100mg per liter is too much for fish.
When you have live plants in a tank, you want to make sure that you have good lighting. If you do not have a fluorescent lighting system, you will not see much growth in your tank. In fact, you might begin to see your plants die. So make sure, that your lighting system is capable of allowing growth for your plants
There is a huge range of plastic plants, and they replicate most species of aquatic plant and some terrestrial plants too. They come in different sizes for planting in the foreground, mid-ground and background of the tank, and specimen plants are also available. You will discover that most types of plastic plant are modular in design, so that pieces can be pulled off one stem and added to another.
Artificial plants on the other hand are handy when your fish would eat your real plants. The fish may still uproot the plants, but this can be helped by buying your artificial plants in mats. These mats look natural and give a very nice look for your aquarium. There are two types of artificial aquarium plants, plastic, which have improved over the years or silk.
Besides lighting, water maintenance is also a critical issue when live plants are added to a home aquarium environment. Obviously, the water must be clean and clear for both the fish and plants to thrive. Weekly cleaning and water testing is recommended, and this includes making sure that no debris is left residing on the bottom of the tank.
Now that you have decided to have live plants in your fish tank, you should know more about taking good care of them. For this you will have to have a proper balance of nutrients and light in the tank for the plants. The amount of light recommended in books is usually not quite sufficient so it is better to get extra light supply. Once you increase the amount of light in the tank you will have to add more nutrients to balance it out.
To maintain live plants in the aquarium you must ensure the correct kind of lighting. To have healthy plants in your aquarium you should have about 3 watts of light per gallon of water. Fluorescent lights are nice for tanks and give a good pleasing effect. One thing you have to be careful of with fluorescent lights is that plants that have leaves at different levels will not get sufficient light at some point.

When we first started keeping tropical fish – we did have one major disaster which wiped out the whole tank. It was a particularly gruesome situation which we could have avoided but I didn’t count as “our fault”…
We had gone away for a long weekend and yes, you’ve guessed it, the thermostat on the tank heater broke, the temperature of the water soared – fish tank extinction ensued…and my family and I were in tears on our return…
I was so shaken by the experience that for a while we kept only plants in our aquarium as we didn’t have the heart to start again.
Slowly over time we realised how wonderful a properly planted tank can be and how exotic the plants can make the whole aquarium look, a properly landscape tank adds enormous visual impact. And of course, when you add fish, plants play an important role in aquarium life as they add oxygen to the water and help to absorb nitrites that are toxic to the fish.
The sun is the most significant factor in the life of a plant, and in an aquarium, lighting is equally as central to maintain the health and beauty of the plants.
Wayne Vandre, Horticulture Specialist, comments that light is the all-important source of energy used by plants in photosynthesis. But light is not just one simple, well-defined entity. The plant response is influenced by light quality, intensity and duration. Experiments show that maximum growth of most plants is under cool white fluorescent light.
It is important to realise that skimping on the quality of lighting will affect the quality of plant growth that you get and therefore the overall quality of tank life.
Landscaping a tank can be fun and it is essential to get different types of plants to give the tank that exotic look. There are many diverse ranges of aquatic plants. Tubers need to be anchored by the root to the bottom of the tank. Floating plants plainly float in the tank do not need to be anchored and will not usually require fertilizer. Rooted plants, like tubers need to be anchored to the bottom of the tank normally tied to pieces of rock or wood. These species usually grow to be fairly tall and will help to fill the aquarium.
Normally, the water and the fish in the tank will supply the nutrients and fertilizers essential for plant growth. It is rare that any extra supplements require to be added. One essential feature in having healthy plant life is the filtration system. Under gravel filters restricts the composition of the gravel in which the plants are rooted and produce a steady flow of bubbles that disturb the surface. All other kinds of filtration systems should work well for plants and it is good to keep water movement in the tank, but not too mush disturbance at the surface as CO2 is lost, essential to the survival of the plants.
All our tanks now have healthy plant life which makes it easier to keep happy healthy and colourful fish.

Discover The Right Plants For Your Aquarium

Most people like green growing plants, and you will find this very human desire expressed in aquariums. Almost every successful and beautiful aquarium has growing plants in it. Contrary to popular belief, it is not necessary to pack your aquarium with dozens of plants. Plant for decorative value, use as few or as many as you desire to make a tasteful arrangement.
Plants like Amazon Swords grow best with a sub-sand filter when the roots are confined. Use small, shallow, cup-like planters, either under the sand or on top of it. These will prevent the roots from spreading and clogging the slots in your filter and also prevent the crown of the plant from being pulled under. If this happens your plants will die.
Aquatic plants fall roughly into three groups. First those bushy ones, which send up branched stems bearing many leaves; these are usually propagated by cuttings, and these are what you are most likely to be offered at the dealers.
Secondly, there are plants which send up a number of long leaves from the same place, or “crown”, just above the root. These usually spread by “runners” under the sand, which send up new plants near the old one; the young plants are separated off, and so these will have roots to them when you buy them.
The third kind does not root in the sand at all, but floats at the surface.
It is useful to know something about the different kinds of plants in these categories before you buy them, as they have different uses and requirements. I would warn you against having too many kinds. The conditions in the aquarium are bound to suit some kinds more than others, and these will make rapid progress, eventually crowding out the rest. In a 24-inch tank therefore it is really not practicable to introduce more than three species.
Choosing Plants
When confronted with a huge variety of plants, there is a great temptation to take a piece of everything that appeals to you. If you do this, you will be wasting money needlessly. A dozen different kinds of plant in a tank will compete for food and light, and before long the strongest will have gained the mastery, the others dying off. So exercise self-restraint and limit your choice to three kinds. Two of these plants should be for massing in the background, and one as a center-piece.
Of the three, I would suggest that, for the first aquarium, one should be either Vallisneria or Sagittaria (not both in one tank, as they compete). Another can be one of the bushy plants – Hygrophila is the easiest to grow, but Cabomba Lim-nophila or Ludwigia are more decorative for the tropical tank; if starting a cold-water tank, make sure the plants you choose are hardy enough.
As a center-piece a Cryptocoryne, Echinodorus or an Aponogeton are recommended for warm water, a Hottonia, Muphar or Ranunculus for the cold water.
Healthy plants are plump, crisp and intense in color; refuse those that are limp and pale. Most aquatic plants are rather brittle when out of water and must be handled carefully. Never pick them up by the middle of the stem; the best way is to lift them by the base, so that they hang down from the fingers. Select young, half-grown plants rather than fully-grown ones, and with as many leaves as possible.
Many of the plants which propagate by cuttings will be seen to have fine, hair-like roots sprouting from the nodes from which branches spring; choose these, as they will “take” more quickly.
Plants with crowns must have good roots, and you should examine these to see that they are plump and bushy.
Selecting plants is a great part of setting up your aquarium, so have fun! There are so many to choose from, you will undoubtedly find some to your taste.

After deciding on the kind of lighting you want for your aquarium, you should pay heed to the hardness of the water. Most plants need a hardness level of 4 to 12 dH and 6.5 to &.2 pH for the water. Apart from this plants need clear and clean water so you should ensure that the water is always maintained clean in the aquarium. Plants do not keep healthy if there is too much debris in the water, so cleaning of the tank is a very essential job.
After you have ensured the condition of the water for the plants, you should maintain their nutrients for healthy growth. Both macro and micro nutrients are required by plants. Macro nutrients are present in the water and need never be added on, while micro nutrients are needed in small quantities. The micro nutrients that plants need in the water are zinc, iron and copper.
However, the fish in the water generally supply all the nutrients that are needed for the healthy growth of aquatic plants. So you do not have to add on any supplements at all for the nutrition of the plants. Avoid filtration systems that are put under the gravel as they disturb the surface with the steady flow of the bubbles. Most other filtration systems are fine. Too much disturbance by filtration systems causes the carbon dioxide to be lost and this is not good for the plants. The filter should keep the nutrients flowing through the water with the current that it creates.
With a good chemical balance and a properly functioning filter system in the tank, the plants in your tank will be healthy and with good growth. Not only will the healthy plants give a good look to your aquarium, the fish will also remain happy with this natural environment that you have created for them.

It is important that you keep the water at optimum temperature for your fish. Maintaining an ideal temperature will prevent growth of algae in your tank. It is recommended that the water temperature should be around 77 -80 F. It is important that ideal pH for your fish is maintained and checked every now and then. The pH of the water is determined by ammonia and nitrate levels. High levels of these elements can produce a not-so-pleasant odour in your tank, and can also be quite toxic for your fish. Every week, you may need to change the water in your tank to regulate the levels of these chemicals. It is not necessary for you to change the entire water; doing so will only disrupt the established ecosystem in your tank. Removing and replacing a quarter of the water in the tank is just enough to prevent shocking your fish. It is also advised to invest on a good filter for your aquarium. The filter should work good enough to keep the water in your aquarium clean from any debris. You can clean the filter once a month, but not too much for there are beneficial bacteria living in the filter that can help maintain your tank.
No matter what fish type you have, aquarium maintenance is a must. It may be tedious, but it’s better compared to buying new sets of fish every now and then.
Adding Plants:
Plants are beautiful additions in your tank. The right plant in your tank will help produce the perfect biotope for your fish. Setting up fresh water plants and taking care of them is just easy and need no special way to maintain them.
When you choose the type of plant you want to grow in your tank, consider first your tank size. Small tanks would naturally require small species of plants. There are some plants that are highly beneficial by acting as food for your fish or as nitrate and ammonia regulators in your tank.
Before introducing the plant in your tank, it is safer to quarantine the plant for several days before you put it inside your main tank. Plants are just like fish and can carry some unwanted guests such as parasites, snails, shrimps, and even bacteria that can harm your fish. Carefully inspect the plant after quarantine before putting it inside the tank.
Lighting is also essential for plant growth. Each breed of plant would require various levels of lighting conditions. Some plants will do well without artificial light if you have enough sunlight filtering from your window. If not, a good daylight would be a good and cheap source of lighting for your plants. Do not, however, put your tank under direct sunlight as it would heat up the tank and cause excessive algal growth.
Make sure that your plant is entirely submerged. Some plants would want required to be tied to a bed of rock before the roots become established. Other plants do not require to be placed deep into the substrate; it is just a way of keeping them still when your fish becomes agitated or aggressive.
The best way to determine the type of plants that you can put in your fresh water tank is to see what biotope is best for your fish. Consider the natural habitat of your fish in the wild and you will have a general idea on what type of plant would be best suited.
