Choosing a Right Accessory For Your Aquarium

Keeping fish in an aquarium is a common hobby of many adults and children around the globe. In the UK, during the 1850s, it became fashionable to keep fish after the Great Exhibition in 1851 that featured ornate aquaria in cast iron frames. The best part of keeping fish in an aquarium is aquascaping which transforms the aquarium into a colourful, and attractive underwater world filled with plants, decorations and fish.
There is no correct or incorrect way of aquascaping, a perfect environment can be created by using aquarium accessories to raise happy and healthy fish since many accessories are important survival tools for fish and other aquatic pets. You can create a custom look by having an ornament as the central focal point. Often, the largest piece of decoration is set as the focal point surrounded by smaller pieces to balance it out.
When choosing the right aquarium accessories keep in mind the needs of your fish, such as where they will eat, sleep, breath and hide. Some aquarium accessories are mandatory like filters, air pumps, lights, heaters (tropical fish live in warm water). There are many pet shops that sell fish tank accessories. The best place to start is at the bottom of your fish tank. Gravel is mostly used for the bottom of tanks due to its weight and easiness to clean, however, pebbles, and rounded glass stones in different colours are also available in pet shops.
Avoid using stones with rough edges or the metallic ones and never take attractive pebbles from a stream or beach since they could contain bacteria and infectious substances that could harm your fish. There are many aquarium and vivarium tank and accessory manufacturers in the UK that are listed on SearchMe4, UK’s leading online business directory.
Next, you may begin the fun part of decoration. There are many aquarium accessories to choose from such as decoration ornaments, plants, lights. A wide variety of ornaments includes sunken ships, hollowed out logs, rocky caves, castles or houses, etc. However, keep in mind that the ornaments must not have holes that fish could get stuck in. Also there should not be any rough edges along the line of moulding.
It is vital to choose the right plants for your decor since real plants are often torn by fish it is best to use artificial plants that are available in a huge variety. These aquarium plants resemble real plants, and last longer since fish are unable to tear them apart. Before adding any kind of fish tank accessories, soak them in a bucket of water with an antibiotic for at least twenty four hours.

Tanks come in all manners of shapes and sizes at differing costs. As well as matching your tank to your needs and tastes you also, and more importantly, need to match the tank to your fishes needs. If you have decided on what type of fish you would like to keep, tropical, cold water goldfish, temperate fish, large fish, make sure that the tank you choose is suitable for your fish to live in for their entire lives. Research the fish that you are interested in and be sure you know their fully grown adult size and the size aquarium that they require. The aquarium that you choose should also have all the necessary equipment need to keep your fish healthy and alive like filter systems, heaters and lighting.
Tips For Buying Your Aquarium
Think carefully about where you are going to position your tank. Avoid any where near doors or loud areas such as near televisions or stereos. Also avoid placing your aquarium near radiators as this may cause your aquarium to over heat.
Old fashioned rectangular, long aquariums are the most suitable tanks for fish. This gives them more swimming space and a larger surface area helps your fish tank maitain a higher oxygen level.
Try to buy as larger tank as is possible. This always makes keeping fish a lot easier as larger volumes of water are more stable and less likely to develop water quality problems.
Remember that larger tanks will cost more to run and make sure that you are able to support your new hobby financially before taking the plunge!
Enjoy!

Tropical Fish Aquarium – How To Set Up Right Habitat For Your Fish

If you have the right habitat set up in your aquarium to suit your tropical fish you can rest assured that your fish will be happy and live long and healthy – perhaps even breed and add to the beauty of your tank. If you are in the mood to have some tropical fish as pets in your aquarium you must know how to set up their home for them. You must also know something about their eating habits as well as their breeding habits.
Tropical fish need a fairly large tank like 3 cubic feet or more. The tank must have clean and fresh water along with the equipment to keep the water that way. They need to have a lot of natural (not artificial) plants in the tank with a lot of grave that some of them love to muzzle through. If the fish are comfortable in their natural habitat they will soon begin to breed adding to your pleasure of fish keeping.
When it comes to tropical fish there is no dearth of choice between the species, and all are easily available in the local pet store. There are the smaller fish for small tanks such as Neons and Tetras. Angelfish and Guppies are a common variety of tropical fish in tanks and make good pets that are not too fussy about their environment and food. You could choose to keep larger fish such as Malawi’s or Cichlids. However, you should bear in mind that Chichlids are cannibals and can turn on each other when they are hungry, so keep them well fed if you want them in your tank. Some of the other variety of tropical fish include Dempsey’s, Parrots, Black Belts, Oscars and Jaguars.
Tropical fish live in freshwater so your tropical fish aquarium is a freshwater aquarium. Ensure that the water you fill into the tank is completely purified and made to stand for a couple of hours in a bucket before you fill it in the tank. You should take at least a month to set up the tank with the necessary equipment such as electric pumps and filters, lighting, feeders, gravel, plants and any other decoration you may want to do to the tank. After all this is done you can then go about getting you fish, which must also be done slowly. Purchase them in pairs and put them in the tank as and when you get them.
Setting up the tank in advance gives the time for the bacteria to circulate, this assists the fish to settle down in their new home. Bacteria in the tank is extremely important to the fish as it is the bacteria that cleans the tank of fish excreta.
It is important to clean the tank regularly, like once in 6 weeks. This will ensure a healthy environment for your fish.

Discover The Right Plants For Your Aquarium

Most people like green growing plants, and you will find this very human desire expressed in aquariums. Almost every successful and beautiful aquarium has growing plants in it. Contrary to popular belief, it is not necessary to pack your aquarium with dozens of plants. Plant for decorative value, use as few or as many as you desire to make a tasteful arrangement.
Plants like Amazon Swords grow best with a sub-sand filter when the roots are confined. Use small, shallow, cup-like planters, either under the sand or on top of it. These will prevent the roots from spreading and clogging the slots in your filter and also prevent the crown of the plant from being pulled under. If this happens your plants will die.
Aquatic plants fall roughly into three groups. First those bushy ones, which send up branched stems bearing many leaves; these are usually propagated by cuttings, and these are what you are most likely to be offered at the dealers.
Secondly, there are plants which send up a number of long leaves from the same place, or “crown”, just above the root. These usually spread by “runners” under the sand, which send up new plants near the old one; the young plants are separated off, and so these will have roots to them when you buy them.
The third kind does not root in the sand at all, but floats at the surface.
It is useful to know something about the different kinds of plants in these categories before you buy them, as they have different uses and requirements. I would warn you against having too many kinds. The conditions in the aquarium are bound to suit some kinds more than others, and these will make rapid progress, eventually crowding out the rest. In a 24-inch tank therefore it is really not practicable to introduce more than three species.
Choosing Plants
When confronted with a huge variety of plants, there is a great temptation to take a piece of everything that appeals to you. If you do this, you will be wasting money needlessly. A dozen different kinds of plant in a tank will compete for food and light, and before long the strongest will have gained the mastery, the others dying off. So exercise self-restraint and limit your choice to three kinds. Two of these plants should be for massing in the background, and one as a center-piece.
Of the three, I would suggest that, for the first aquarium, one should be either Vallisneria or Sagittaria (not both in one tank, as they compete). Another can be one of the bushy plants – Hygrophila is the easiest to grow, but Cabomba Lim-nophila or Ludwigia are more decorative for the tropical tank; if starting a cold-water tank, make sure the plants you choose are hardy enough.
As a center-piece a Cryptocoryne, Echinodorus or an Aponogeton are recommended for warm water, a Hottonia, Muphar or Ranunculus for the cold water.
Healthy plants are plump, crisp and intense in color; refuse those that are limp and pale. Most aquatic plants are rather brittle when out of water and must be handled carefully. Never pick them up by the middle of the stem; the best way is to lift them by the base, so that they hang down from the fingers. Select young, half-grown plants rather than fully-grown ones, and with as many leaves as possible.
Many of the plants which propagate by cuttings will be seen to have fine, hair-like roots sprouting from the nodes from which branches spring; choose these, as they will “take” more quickly.
Plants with crowns must have good roots, and you should examine these to see that they are plump and bushy.
Selecting plants is a great part of setting up your aquarium, so have fun! There are so many to choose from, you will undoubtedly find some to your taste.

One popular activity right now that has taken the world of breeding by storm is placing plants in aquarium to a point where there are people now who prefer to indulge in aqua-culture while not having any fish in their aquarium. No one can deny how beneficial it is to have plants in a fish tank and with a little interior design, creates a gorgeous little inner world that allows your fish an ideal environment to live and play.
People who are new to fish keeping might be daunted by the idea of planting in their aquariums but it really isn’t as hard as it sounds. What you need is some patience, a streak of creativity and a proper guide and you’re bound to create a nice little inner world.
Before going out to the store to buy your plants, you do need to draw a rough sketch of what you want the aquarium to look like in the end. Fish tank plants come in various sizes and shapes, and can also be categorized as floating or planted. Work out on paper what you want your tank to be and then head over to the nearest fish store. A good idea is to also seek the advice of the shop owner on what would be ideal plants for the set up you plan to create.
Substrate is an important part of a planted fish tank. You can’t just have gravel or sand in your tank and expect the plants to live. It is the nutrients in the substrate that will enable to plants to grow healthily. The substrate is generally placed beneath the gravel and will provide the nutrients once the roots of the plants bore down into them. Some of the most important nutrients that plants will be able to obtain from the substrate are carbon, nitrogen, sulphur, phosphorous and iron while there are also other lesser elements as well that increases their health.
Next consideration is lighting. Photosynthesis is a necessary function performed by plants and it needs a source of light. If your fish tank is placed near a window or door that has a natural light source, that’s great but if it doesn’t, you will have to provide the plants with an alternate light source to fulfill its needs.
A final consideration is the type of filter you are using. Undergravel filters are not the right kind to use because the plant roots will eventually clog the gravel and prevent proper filtration. Also, try not to get a filter that creates too much water movement as well.
When all these considerations have been taken into account, it’s now time to plant them. Firstly, inspect the plant leaves carefully for snails and rinse them off. While doing this, also cut off any brown or decaying leaves or they will decay and contaminate the tank. When adding the plants, it is always a good idea to add them at one go. This is where the complete design comes in handy. This allows the tank environment to balance itself to the new additions, which will happen each time you add in plants. It is easy to plant the aquatic plants. Just use your finger or a pencil and create a depression in the substrate. Then plant the roots into the hole you created and cover it back up again nice and tight. If you have purchased plants that stubbornly refuse to stay down, you can add small lead weight which you can also get from the same fish store.

Planting In Your Aquarium The Right Way

Using The Right Fish Tank Equipment

Are you new to the fine art of owning fish? Having your own fish aquarium is an exciting hobby that will teach you a lot about nature, but the key to proper fish care is using the right fish tank equipment. In order to keep fish alive and in their optimum health condition, you need to accommodate them by producing an environment that mimics what they are used to as closely as possible. This means that their water condition, temperature and surroundings must all match what they are used to. This also means that using the right fish tank equipment is absolutely vital if you want to keep your fish healthy and give them the quality of life that they deserve.
Using the right fish tank equipment means implementing all of the following pieces of equipment in your aquarium set up:
- A proper filtration system.
- A heater.
- A thermometer.
- Aquarium plants or Airstone.
- The right Décor.
Filtration- is a necessary part of keeping your aquarium properly equipped. Filtration pulls the water through, filtering out impurities, waste and other bits and releasing clean water back into the aquarium. Not only should you have the fight filter in your aquarium, but you have to make sure that you are using the right filter media as well. Most filters use charcoal to purify the water before releasing it back into the aquarium, sans waste and debris.
Heater – Most tropical and salt water fish prefer warmer waters. Goldfish are usually more than happy to be in colder waters, but if you want to keep your tropical fish happy, keep them warm. Most heaters for aquariums are set up so that they only click on when the water needs a boost of warmth. Make sure that you also have a thermometer installed inside your aquarium so that you can make sure that the right temperature is being reached at all times. Different fish species have different temperature requirements, so keep that in mind when setting your heater.
Aquarium Plants and Airstones – These two pieces of equipment are not necessarily vital to the health of your fish, but they are nice and helpful additions. Plants and airstones both introduce oxygen into the water and while fish do not need to breathe the air we breathe, they do need the oxygen in the water in order to survive. Airstones release oxygen into the water by way of bubbles, and plants naturally produce oxygen as part of their normal life cycle. So while not exactly necessary, these props are still worthwhile additions to your aquarium setting.
Décor – Some people would tell you that décor is not a vital part of any aquarium setting, but some fish do require it.
For example, African Cichlids are aggressive fish that take up territories in an aquarium. If you plan to house numerous Cichlids in the same aquarium, giving them different territories and boundaries is a good way to keep them from harming one another. Another less than vital aspect of the aquarium setting, but still worthwhile if you want to create a safe haven for your fish.

WHY CHOOSE A BIORB FISH TANK?
Reef-One has sold close to a million biorb aquariums since the Biorb first launched, many of which are owned by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow & Ryan Seacrest. That is a lot of aquariums, but, is the biorb right for you? This article highlights the main reasons hundreds of thousands of people have chosen a biorb aquarium and will help you decide if a Biorb Aquarium is the perfect aquarium for you.
If you are thinking of buying an aquarium and have done your research you know that there are hundreds of different tanks, and aquarium options to choose from. Out of all of those choices, why should you choose a biorb aquarium rather than a different tank?
Biorb Highlights – Why is the Biorb Special, Here Are Just a Few Reasons.
• The Biorb’s stylish design has enamored thousands, including dozens of celebrities who own one. (Just a few are Gwyneth Paltrow, Ryan Seacrest, Mariah Carey, & Jessica Alba)
• Everything you need to start your Biorb Fish Tank is included, even a fish food sample
• There are over nine different biorb tanks & sizes to choose from, and several colors
• Biorb care is easy with the snap & twist biorb service kit
• Biorb Aquariums have five stages of filtration for healthy fish
Everything You Need to Start the Aquarium is Included
The Biorb comes with everything you need to get your aquarium started, besides the fish. It comes with a water dechlorinator, light, air pump, filter, airstone, fish food sample, and ceramic media.
A few things that it doesn’t come with that you will want in the future are a biorb siphon hose, a fish net, and fish food, or biorb decorations or other optional biorb accessories.
The Biorb Aquarium Line Offers Nine Different Tanks to Choose From
Since the biorb aquariums range in size from four to sixteen gallons it means you can find an aquarium that is the right size for you. If you want to keep things simple and put a betta on your office desk, the baby biorb aquarium (4 gallons) will work great for you. If you are looking for a more extensive set up with tropical fish, or are hoping to try your hand at a saltwater aquarium, the 16 gallon biorb life, or classic biorb give you that opportunity.
The regular biorb comes in a four, eight, or 16 gallon size, the biube comes in two, 9 gallon models, and the biorb life aquariums come in 8, 12, or 16 gallon sizes.
The Biorb Lines are the Classic Biorb, Biorb Life, & Biube Aquariums
Low Maintenance
We know that this one will catch your eye, if you are shopping for a nice aquarium for your home or office, chances are you do have another life, and you don’t want to spend hours at a time cleaning your aquarium. Great news, the Biorb Aquariums are a cinch to clean. The biorb filter is easily replaced with a snap and twist and the biorb has 5 stages of filtration.
You can easily maintain a healthy biorb aquarium by spending less than an hour a month. Don’t be fooled though, some people will say that the biorb aquarium is completely maintenance free. Anyone who says an aquarium is maintenance free is wrong. Every aquarium, no matter how advanced requires some maintenance. Saying that an aquarium doesn’t need maintenance is like saying your house doesn’t ever need to be cleaned. Sure, you could get by without cleaning your house for a year…but let’s face it, you would be miserable, and so will your fish if you don’t clean their tank.
The Good News About Biorb Care
Maintenance is fast and easy when done regularly. Just a few minutes a week will be enough to take care of your biorb tank. The main thing you will need to do is a water change, every couple weeks you will want to siphon out and replace a portion of your water. (more often if your aquarium is getting dirty faster). After a little experience a water change can be done in only 5-10 minutes.
Things to Consider Before Buying a Biorb
Biorb aquariums are great, however, they do have limitations like any fish tank.
Do a little research before buying the fish you want. Be sure to find out how big your fish will get, and if they will outgrow your aquarium you should choose a different fish to buy, or you will have to trade it in for a smaller fish as it gets bigger. Some fish aren’t suitable for the biorb aquarium, for example, some fish require more than 16 gallons of water, or require running water and lots of plants to stay healthy. If you want an extravagant aquarium setup with dozens of fish, the biorb probably isn’t right for you.
Don’t try to put too many fish in your biorb, fish need space, a rough rule of fish keeping is one inch of fish per gallon of water.
BIORB SUMMARY
Biorb aquariums are stylish, easy to setup & maintain, and come in lots of different shapes and sizes to fit both your budget and your aquarium needs. Before buying an aquarium determine what you want in a fish tank and the number and types of fish you want to house. If those numbers fit with a biorb fish tank, then chances are the biorb will be a great aquarium for you. The Biorb has been great for close to a million people over the last several years, is it right for you, that’s for you to decide.

Strong bounds between cats and humans
There are a lot of experts out there who say that cats are strictly independent animals. These very same experts state that cats have chosen to associate with humans due to their strategy of survival. Although many argue with this statement, there are many who agree as well — although those that agree are normally those in the percentile who don’t agree with cats.
