The Essentials About Saltwater Aquariums

While saltwater environments often require more work and dedication than their freshwater counterparts, they provide a substantially different appeal. The key to success, as with any pet, is planning ahead. Before you jump into purchasing and filling your saltwater tank, you will need to do extensive research regarding the types of fish you plan on keeping as well as what type of habitat you hope to have. Here are some basics which need to be addressed for a saltwater tank:
- Saltwater habitats:
Saltwater tanks can be found in three basic varieties: Fish only, Fish only with live rock, and reef setups. While fish only environments are the most economic option, there are some clear advantages to incorporating live rock into your tank-namely that they provide a natural filter to the habitat and they are more aesthetically pleasing without upgrading to a full-scale reef environment. If you have the time, money, and dedication for a reef tank setup, it will pay off in the long run. Reef habitats can house many more species and provide a more engaging tank.
Also, starting small or simply may seem like a good option, but after the setup required for any size tank you may soon wish you had started with at least a 35 gallon tank. It is also worth noting that smaller tanks require more frequent tests to maintain appropriate chemical levels in the water and are more susceptible to rapid change.
- Equipment:
Purchasing the right equipment to begin with will save money on replacing fish in the long run. Some pieces of equipment that should accompany your saltwater tank include a heater, protein skimmer, thermometer, and test kits. More complete lists can be found easily and depend on the specifics of your desired tank setup.
- Quarantine Tank:
Quarantine tanks make the transition much easier on your saltwater fish and will prevent the spread of disease to others in your aquarium. It is highly recommended that all fish, under all circumstances, be quarantined before introducing them to your tank. This is not a lengthy process, nor does it require an elaborate setup, but it is in the best interest of your fish and ultimately you wallet.
- Other Tank Accessories:
While all the above items are essential to bear in mind for the success of your saltwater tank, there are a few more things to keep in mind.
A background should be painted or taped to the back of the tank. Painting (always on the outside of the tank) is generally a better option since it won’t be damaged by spilled or leaking saltwater. Also, in addition to live rock, sand should be added to the tank. However, you should only use sand designed for aquarium use so that you know it won’t be harmful to your fish. Invertebrates, such as sea urchins, starfish, and coral also add depth and color to your saltwater tank and can contribute to the ecosystem. Lastly, aquarium plants can help keep the tank clean, attractive, and more interesting for your fish.

Saltwater aquariums are beautiful setups at home. It relieves stress and tension.
An aquarium is a vivarium consisting of at least 1 transparent side, keeping water-dwelling animals and plants inside. These aquariums can hold fish, amphibians, invertebrates, aquatic plants, and marine mammals.
Aquariums have two types, namely; the saltwater aquariums and the fresh water aquariums. A saltwater aquarium is harder to maintain because marine fishes and other saltwater life are more delicate to maintain. It requires studying a bit of environmental science to understand marine life.
A saltwater aquarium is more appealing, colorful, and beautiful. Marine life is composed of a wide variety of fishes and mammals, anemones, live corals, jellyfish and crustaceans inside the tanks. You can also keep several colored reef fishes for a more natural effect. Thus, the movement of the living organisms inside often looks colorful and vibrant. Several popular saltwater aquarium fishes include the angelfish, comical blenny, blue lined triggerfish, damsels, and the clown fish.
It is very important to maintain the level of water and salt of saltwater tanks to keep the aquamarine species in your saltwater aquarium alive and healthy. Water from these saltwater aquariums tend to evaporate and leaves behind only the salt. A hydrometer is a useful device in detecting water salinity, and compensating the level of evaporated water.
There are two types of hydrometers used by aquarists. The first one is the swing needle hydrometer. The other one comes with a tube and a separate needle around 3/8 inches in diameter. The swing needle hydrometer is packed with all its parts together as compared to the other hydrometer with a tube and a separate needle. It is placed inside a narrow plastic container. When filled with seawater, the swing needle hydrometer starts moving in an arc position. This is right onto the graduation marked on the container and stopping at the relevant SG.
When setting up your own saltwater aquarium, first check the tank for leaks. Then, clean your tank with 1 teaspoon of pure bleach for every 5 gallons of water. Scrub the tank, plastic plants, rocks and other decorations. Rinse them with clean water.
Install the filtration system next. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
Wash the substrate before you put it in your aquarium. Then, put the plants inside, securing the bottoms in the substrate. Fill a large bucket with clean water.
Using your hydrometer, add some salt. Fill your aquarium with saltwater, leaving about one inch at the top. Start your filter system. Then, add the thermometer and heater. Most of the marine fishes are healthy in 70 and 80 degrees.
Let the system run for 72 hours prior to getting the temperature setting. Then add the fish you bought in the pet shop when the tank temperature is within the limits and the chemical levels are all sanctioned.
Buy a power head to produce constant water movement. it is very necessary to marine fishes. Be careful when you buy one. Make sure you do not buy the big one because it can cause a whirlpool effect.
Buy a protein skimmer. This is also important for your marine tank. The protein skimmer will remove organic debris from the water. You will also need an external air pump and water pump for your skimmer.

Saltwater Aquarium Types

So you’ve finally decided to “take the plunge” and start your own saltwater aquarium, but how do you decide what type of fish tank to create? There are three ways to set up a saltwater aquarium: fish only, fish only with live rock, and reef tank.
Fish Only
A fish only saltwater tank is the most affordable option out of the three because it doesn’t require an expensive lighting setup. This type of aquarium, however, is not the most simple to put together. Setup can take a long time while you wait for the nitrogen cycle to finish, and maintenance is a hassle, as the tank needs more frequent cleanings. With no live rock in the aquarium, less filtration occurs and you’ll have to change the water on a consistent basis to remove excess nitrates from the water.
As you’ve probably already guessed, a fish only tank is only for fish, although it’s possible to add some other critters to the mix, such as snails and hermit crabs, if you want to have more diversity in your saltwater aquarium and more efficiently control the formation of algae.
A fish only aquarium can be a community tank or a semi-aggressive tank. A community tank contains fish that work well together, while a semi-aggressive tank is home to lone fish from a variety of different species. In most cases, however, it’s a good idea to stick to the same species in one tank.
Fish Only With Live Rock
This type of aquarium is exactly the same as the fish only tank except for the live rock and superior lighting. Live rock is making a comeback due to its natural filtration features, which is the best way to keep a saltwater aquarium clean and safe for your fish. The organisms that live in and on the rock contribute to the filtration process and aid in the nitrogen cycle. Less nitrates build up in the tank because the porous nature of the live rock filters them out of the water.
Although live rock is an exceptional biological filtration system, your saltwater aquarium will still require maintenance and frequent water changes. Add iodine, calcium, strontium, magnesium, and other minerals on a regular basis to keep the water healthy.
Fiji rock is the best live rock you can get, but it’s also the most expensive (live rock doesn’t come cheap). Generally, a live rock aquarium requires 1-2 pounds of live rock per aquarium gallon. Prices for live rock vary depending on the region.
Live rock also provides food for your fish.
Reef Tanks
Reef tanks are perfect for invertebrates, corals, and anemones. Most people set up this type of tank for reef keeping – if there are any fish in the tank they aren’t the main attraction.
This is an expensive type of aquarium to maintain, as invertebrates, corals, and anemones cost a lot to keep.
Only the experienced aquarist sets up a reef tank because they can be difficult to maintain. You have to sustain excellent water conditions, make use of expensive lighting, use reverse osmosis or deionized water, add supplements, and purchase live rock for filtration.

Saltwater Fish Aquariums – Saltwater Fish Tanks

A salt water fish tank is an aquarium that mimics an ocean environment and houses fish, corals, plants that lives in the ocean.
Salt water fish tanks are considered more difficult to keep than freshwater tanks because salt water fish have less tolerance for fluctuations that can occur quickly within the closed environment of an aquarium.
However, it is a rewarding experience to recreate the ocean environment in your home. An aquarium helps you to destress and lower blood pressure. No wonder aquariums are a common sight in hospitals and clinics.
Before buying a fish tank, measure the space so that you buy the size that will fit into the space. The bes place to put the fish tank is in the living room where it is easily seem. Do avoid direct sunlight
Briefly, here are the steps to build a fish tank.
1. Install the aquarium equipment such as the filtration system, protein skimmer, powerheads, aquarium heater.
2. Check for any leaks in the fish tank. Tighten all host connections. Fill up the aquarium with freshwater and wipe the exterior of the tank dry. If there is no leak, shut the system and remove some water.
3. Install the substrate, sea salts and live rock. Put the plants in and anchor them to the bottoms in the substrate.
4. Fill it with water. Fill a large bucket with clean, dechlorinated water. Fill your tank with the saltwater, leaving about an inch at the top.
5. Install the Lighting.
6. Start the filter system. Maintain the temperature between 75 and 80 degrees. Let everything run for at least 72 hours.
7. When the chemical levels are all okay and the tank temperature is within suggested limits, add the fish. Start with one or two first. Add a few safe tank janitors such as snails and hermit crabs to control the waste in the aquarium.
Now that the tank is setup, let’s talk about the fish.
Nevery buy a new fish on impulse at first sight. Before you select any new addition for your aquarium, take some study to learn more about the fish such as its characteristics, compatibility with other fishes, its dietary requirements and eating habits.
Select fish that are healthy. How do you know if they are healthy? Here is a telltale sign: Sick fish don’t eat. Ask the vendor to feed the fish in your presence.
Observe their appearance. The eyes should be bright and clear.A sick fish has misty eyes or sunken eyes. The mouth should be uninjured. The skin should be smooth and well-colored without missing scales. A healthy fish should have a well rounded and slightly convex (curved out) stomach. Do not select a fish with a sunken stomach.
Observe the movement A sick fish breath shallowly and move very little. It is lethargic and remain at the bottom of the tank.
How many fish should you put in your tank?. The rule of thumb is “One inch of fish per 5 gallons of system saltwater”.
You need to acclimatize the new fish to your aquarium because a sudden chang in temperature or water quality can shock the fish to death. The most common method is the floating bag method. If you use this method, do not dump the bag water into your tank! If you do, you risk exposing your tank to any parasites or diseases that were in the shop’s tanks.
Here is a s imple way to acclimatize the new fish. Put the bag inside a clean bucket. Open the top of the bag and remove about 25% of the water from the bag. Replace this water with the same amount of water from your tank. Every 10 minutes add about 1 cup of water to the bag. Repeat this process for about an hour. After an hour has passed use a small net to get the fish out of the bag and gently place the fish into your tank.
How often do you feed the fish? The best frequency is to feed them twice a day. Do not overfeed the fish. Put enough for 2 minutes because theywill eat for about 2 minutes and then ignore the food forhours.
Now that the fish and tank are in place, monitor the water quality and the health of the fish. Have a scheduled tank maintenance program
Having a bit of the ocean in the comfort of your home is worth the effort. Enjoy your new saltwater aquarium!.

Aquarium lighting system for saltwater aquarium

Many people who like the aspect of having piece of natural habitat in their homes want to place beautiful saltwater fish tank or freshwater aquarium in their living room. However, they often do not realize that they need to work really hard to maintain the aquarium and its inhabitants. The water needs to be changed regularly. They need to arrange food for the fishes on a daily basis. Apart from that, one needs to decorate the aquarium as well.
Aquarium lighting is very important aspect of the successful aquarium and many people do not give it that much importance. The fishes, plants and corals need specific amount of light for their growth. That is why you need to arrange proper aquarium lighting.
Aquarium lighting should be designed in the way to mimic natural daylight. You need to keep it on for 8-10 hours a day. You also need to check whether the light is increasing the heat of the water in the aquarium. If that is happening then you need to take care of that by installing aquarium chiller. The water temperature needs to be comfortable for the fishes and other aquarium animals and plants and you need to do that properly by regulating it as close as possible to the natural water temperature. Aquarium cooling fans can be a useful tool in managing water temperature without a high cost of aquarium chillers. Aquarium cooling fans are usually installed within aquarium canopy and work in the way of moving hot air from the inside of the canopy.
There are several different types of fish tank lighting used in the modern aquarium setup. From standard incandescent lighting, PowerCompact PC lighting, high output T5 fixtures , Very High Output VHO lighting, Metal Halide lighting, and latest LED aquarium lighting. Aquarium lights can be installed in the form or retro kit which is usually installed in the wooden canopy or fully integrated aquarium light fixture.
Freshwater aquarium fish tanks are mostly utilizing fluorescent type of lighting systems like T5, power compact and VHO lights.
Saltwater fish tanks and marine reef tanks mostly utilize high output fluorescent T5 and VHO lights in combination with intense metal halide lights.
Latest technical innovations bring LED lights into the spectrum of interest of marine and reef hobbyists. LED light fixtures offer high intensity light with very low heat output which is prefer for saltwater reef systems where keeping low water temperature is of high importance. LED light fixtures also offer high controllability when it comes to output and color spectrum of the light. Nowadays you need to be really specific about your lighting requirement. Doing your homework before making the purchase is a key for putting together a successful fish tank.
Another popular lighting type for both freshwater fish tanks and reef aquariums is aquarium moonlights. Aquarium moonlights are usually composed of low voltage LED modules powered by low voltage transformer. Some more advanced moonlight LED systems incorporate sophisticated controllers that mimic natural moon cycles. These aquarium LED systems have been known to promote spawning in both fishes and corals. These aquarium moonlights can create very attractive environment where livestock can be observed after the main lights are off.

First Steps To Saltwater Aquarium Set Up

So, you’ve decided that owning an aquarium would be a nice feature to add to the home. Owning and managing an aquarium can be a bit of a daunting task at first because there are so many variables that need to be taken care of. Not to mention the fact you don’t know what you are doing. This guide is here to help ease the worry by going over some of the basics that every saltwater aquarium needs for proper use.
First, we need to know what kind of fish will be living in the tank. Putting the wrong fish together can be disaster. Some may not make it due to the living conditions, others may get injured while in the tank, and the two different fish may get into constant fights. Usually one fish will eventually not come out from these fights alive. Make sure to know the personality of the species of fish you’re about to place into a tank together. Typically, you’ll want to stay away from sticking aggressive fish with each other.
Next we need to have all the equipment that runs the aquarium. Get a tank that will fit in the space or display area that you have in mind. Make sure it fits wanted area from the start and that there is enough room for the kinds of fish that plan on being in there.
Lighting should be next on the list. Again you’ll need to know some information about the fish. Some species prefer low lighting while others like to swim in a lot of light. Your choice here will also be affect if live plants or reefs are planned to be placed into the tank. Make sure to cover the lighting requirements of everything placed into the saltwater aquarium.
Filters are the next most important. Without a quality filter, bacteria and disease can get out of control in the tank leaving your fish in danger. This also helps clean the water of anything excreted by the fish.
To finish up, there are a few other important items that are needed to properly run a saltwater aquarium. A heater is use to regulate the temperature of the water at the required levels of the fish. Bigger tanks may need more than one of these. As make sure to buy some substrate. This is the stuff commonly seen at the bottom of the aquariums and looks like rocks and pebbles.
Hopefully, this guide will help in the creation of your first saltwater aquarium. Do some research and keep the fish’s needs in mind and everything should go fine.

So you’re considering buying a saltwater aquarium and you are doing some initial research. Here are some quick answers to some of the questions that you may have. Are they beautiful? Yes. Are they interesting? Yes. Is it easy to find resources on how to care for them? Yes. Will the chicks dig it? Yes! Do they require care and attention? Yes. When you purchase a saltwater aquarium you are really buying a biosphere, and the life in it is dependent on how you care for the environment. So here are are a couple of things to consider when you purchase a saltwater aquarium.
What kind of aquarium should I buy?
Before you buy you need to consider where you are in life. I know that may seem like an existential thought, but it matters if you are in a season of constant transition. Are you going to move soon? Do you have an apartment? If that is the case then you may want to consider a smaller tank for practical reasons: mobility, shock to the creatures if you move, or just how will it look at your place. What is your budget? An empty large tank is not very appealing. You also need to consider if you are going to purchase an acrylic tank or a glass tank. Glass tanks are difficult to scratch and keep their clarity but can be difficult to move and are less expensive. Acrylic tanks are easy to scratch, lighter, and come in some interesting designs. What kind of design do you want? This line of thinking should get you started in the right direction.
What is the upkeep like?
Maintaining a saltwater aquarium properly is very important. It is so important in fact that you really should keep a log of your observations of changes that are happening inside of it. You will want to take not on thinks like:
Fish: Do they have Parasites? Are they active? Do they have a normal appetite? Does their color look normal? Do their fins look okay?
Water: Is the water clear or cloudy? Is the temperature right? Is the filter system working correctly? Are the chemical levels correct? (Salinity, pH, Alkalinity, Ammonia, Nitrite, Phosphate, Iodine, Calcium)
These parameters will help you determine how often you should clean your saltwater aquarium. The quality of the filtration system will also help determine how often you clean you saltwater aquarium. The more you clean it the easier it is to clean for you the next time. There are a lot of filter options out there but if you are looking for something built in you may want to check out Eclipse, SeaClear. These are quality systems that can filter 150 gallons an hour!
Saltwater Aquariums are a beautiful addition to the home they bring color and an interesting conversation piece to your living space, but understand this is not just something that you can jump into. Do not let your tank become an expensive tropical fish ghetto. This hobby requires some discipline but it is well worth it and like I said before…the chicks dig it!

A friend of mine recently went gung ho into this hobby and within two months he realized he was in over his head and ended up selling all of his stuff on eBay. Take time to consider what type of aquarium you are starting. Is it a Fowlr tank? Is it a tropical fish tank? is it going to be a regular fish bowl with a goldfish? Regardless do your homework. If you don’t keep up with it, it can lead to severe health complications, such as seizures, comas, and even death. The easiest way to do this is with a blood glucose meter. You normally prick your finger, put a drop of blood on a lancet, and then put it in the meter. It will then give you a number, which is your blood glucose level.

1.) Remember, there is no dearth of variety when it comes to the kind of aquariums you can buy for keeping saltwater residents in them; there are only two main consideration iyou should consider – your budget and the time and effort you can spare to learn about the potential inhabitants of your marin tank and whether you are up to seeing to their regular upkeep.
2) There is a wide variety of the types, construction material, size and ornamentation available for saltwater aquariums that really end up making consumers feel number of choices available and the belief that there is no sure-shot formula for success when it comes to building a saltwater aquarium, it can be very difficult for fish tank enthusiasts to decide which type of fish tank they should buy. There are many factors to be considered before anyone with any plans of setting up a fish tank should consider before ever setting foot inside a pet store.
3) The next consideration is hte size of the tank. If you are a beginer you should opt for a small size aquarium and set your skills on mantaining the tank and the inhabitants. You will get a fairly good idea within a couple of months, on how many fish a particular size aquarium will hold and how to go about taking care of it.
4). Choose the fish for your aquarium wisely. If you are going to keep even the smallest variety of saltwater carnivore fish in the tank you should ensure that they have plenty of space to swim around. If the tank is crowded and small the small variety of shark will get aggressive and damage the other show fish in the tank.
5). Choose the material the tank is made of wisely. Aquariums are made of two materials, glass and acrylic. Glas is the better choice as it does not scratch easily, though care must be taken to prevent cracking. While cleaning the aquarium acrylic is very easily scratched and in no time at all you will feel the need to replace it, An expensive proposition.
6). Never keep more than 10 fish in a 2 cubic foot tank. If you want to keep more fish you should purchase a larger tank.
7). The foliage in the tank should be natural. Do not go for the artificial aquarium plants as the natural plants serve as breeding grounds for bacteria the fish feed on as well as help clean the aquarium water.
8). Ensure that the tank comes with a aerator and water filter. There are many electric accessories that are easily available to choose from.
9). Gravel is an important part of an aquarium. It not only helps the water filter keep the water clean byt it also adds to the beauty of the tank.
10). Lighting should be adequate and not too strong. A small floricent tube will sufice.
Ensure that your tank has all these accessories before you begin to put fish into it. Your aquarium will not be complete if any of these items are missing.
