There are many types of filtration systems available for your saltwater aquarium. But which is the right kind for you? Biological filtration systems are of course going to be a part of your overall filtration system. They can constitute one hundred percent but that is an option, and you may wish to have mechanical filters working in conjunction with your biological ones.

The filter’s purpose is to ensure that waste is removed from your tank, because unlike the ocean, your tank is a finite space where your livestock cannot escape. If you don’t have a good filtration system and make the mistake of over-feeding your livestock, then you will quickly have problems inside your tank. This is because most fish process waste into ammonia, which then becomes toxic to your fish unless destroyed by your filtration system.

Let’s examine what types there are available.

Biological Filters

Biological filters are going to constitute a portion of your tank because the natural foundation of your reef, from the sand, to the rock formations and plant life you choose all form part of the biological filter. What occurs in nature is that is that natural bacteria form on the rocks and in the sand, which is exactly what you want. The first batch of bacteria that will form will be ammonia eaters, but they will convert the ammonia into slightly less harmful nitrate. Fortunately, nitrate-eater bacteria will form next, thus clearing your tank of harmful waste. It takes more than a rock or two to have a one hundred percent biological filter however. There are many techniques, some of which are visually stunning, used to create a sound biological filter that eliminates the need for mechanical filtration. But the right materials all depend on your choice of livestock. Different fish, corral, and other livestock you may choose for your tank will require different biological filtration set-ups. So do your research based on your species.

Mechanical Filters

Mechanical filters used in conjunction with your biological setup puts you in full control, ensuring that if there is a waste problem that it can be dealt with immediately to ensure the survival of your livestock. But it is important to remember that mechanical filters will not be able to eliminate large solids in your tank, and require effort on your part to keep them from getting clogged. What they primarily do is strain solid particles from your tank to keep the water clear. Working in partnership with your biological filter, the mechanical filter is among the most important components of your entire tank.

Chemical Filters

Chemical filters work by gas activated carbon dissolving waste materials, and usually are used in combination with mechanical and/or biological filters. It is useful to use the carbon-based chemical filter when ammonia levels rise to a high enough level to harm the livestock in your tank, while allowing your biological system to do the regular, every day work.

It is useful to know that all three types can be used in combination or separately. It really depends on the size of your tank, the livestock you have chosen, and your particular tastes and design for your underwater habitat.

There are some fundamental marine aquarium supplies needed to run a saltwater aquarium. These include an aquarium, lighting, skimmers, filters & filtration equipment, live rock and substrate, power head, sea salt mix/saltwater & hydrometer, heater, thermometer, air pump & air stones, test kits, additives & supplements, maintenance tools & supplies. There are many UK aquatic and marine supplies companies that are listed on searchme4, UK’s leading online business directory.

First and foremost, choose the style and size of your aquarium. Remember, saltwater aquariums should be at least fifty gallons, especially since some saltwater fish can grow to up to eighteen inches Carefully decide on a permanent place for your fish tank, avoid direct sunlight, and do not keep it in a place with sudden temperature changes, for instance by the front door or across a window since the sun will create an imbalance in the water salinity, nitrite, pH and ammonia levels.

Most fish tanks are made of glass or acrylic and are available in custom made design and size. Next, decide on the type of lighting you want for your livestock, most fish tanks come with attached lighting however, you can also buy stylish lighting to hang inside your aquarium. Sea salts are the main component of a saltwater or marine aquarium. Maintenance tools & supplies such as plastic buckets or containers, siphon tube/hose, an algae scraper or magnet, fish nets are important to keep at home.

Water filtration is essential for aquatic pets to survive, the levels of ammonia and nitrate should be kept well below detectable levels. Choosing the right skimmers, filters & filtration equipment depends on the size of the tank, the type and the fish that will live in it. The filtration system in your fish tank should reduce the amount & effects of wastes, stabilize the water chemistry, provide good water movement (current) and ensure that the oxygen is correctly dissolved in the water.

The currents help in removing waste products and residue that promote algae growth, feed and nourish aquatic pets, and burn off excess fat found in many products of fish food. Sand filters, also known as fluidised bed filters, are comprised of a tube filled with sand. The elevated water circulation keeps the sand free of waste. Sand filters are quite new and are very efficient biological filters perfect for any aquarium size. Aquarium protein skimmers are used in saltwater aquariums to physically eliminate organic compounds before they start to break down into nitrogenous waste.

What You Should Know When Buying A Saltwater Fish Tank

A saltwater fish tank is used for keeping fish that are used to living in salty waters.

In the 1950′s it was popular to keep marine fish as pets. People would visit their local beach with their aquarium in hand hoping to pick themselves up a cheap pet for their children.Compressors were used to keep the water healthy but nowadays filters and substances such as salt mixes are available to add to the water which are used to regulate the water to ensure the correct environment. Electric filters and pumps and heaters all now make life easier for the fish enthusiast.

How Big Should My Saltwater Fish Tank Be?,

A large Saltwater fish tank is far better than a small tank, the experts recommend the saltwater fish tank to be at least fifty five gallons. It also depends on a few things such as the following:

•How much money you have to spend
•How much room you have

Choosing The Correct Synthetic Salt Mix For Your Saltwater Fish Tank

To ensure the healthy survival of your fish the water in your saltwater fish tank needs to be maintained to a level which is the closest to seawater as possible The following salt mixes do a very good job:

•Chlorine
•Sodium
•Calcium
•Potassium
•Silicon
•Sulfur
•Magnesium
•bromine

The following (not all) are also required in smaller quantities to maintain the suitable levels to ensure your fish survive: Your local supplier will be able to advise you as to the quantities needed.

•iron
•copper
•iodine
•cobalt
•chromium
•manganese

Beginners Tips For Your Saltwater Fish Tank

When stocking your saltwater fish tank with fish begin by introducing a few inexpensive fish. Make sure the fish are not ill. Try and choose the largest tank that you can afford preferably made from glass as acrylic tanks tend to scratch easily. Damsels are very easy to keep in a wide range of water conditions and are great for the beginner. Marine fish such as grammas, basslets, and hawkfishes should only be introduced when you have a good knowledge of and experience with marine fish.

Fish keeping is an entertaining and relaxing hobby. I would go on to say that once you are done with all the haggling to build yourself a one, then just by looking at it you could sooth your senses. It does rejuvenate through its visual appeal. This is because of both diversity and complexity of the marine life in it. And especially saltwater aquariums, they tend to contain more colorful and unique life forms compared to freshwater fishes.

If you are interested in a saltwater tank, you should be acquainted with the fact that due to the diversity of marine life and difficulty in breeding them, most fishes in a saltwater aquarium are directly take from the sea. So in a way this adds to the cost, as a major chunk of the expenses of shipping and handling of the fishes is passed on you.

Starting a saltwater tank is very different from getting a freshwater tank done. Before you get down to building or selecting an appropriate tank, you need to purchase the supplies and materials needed to make the tank environment more conducive for saltwater animals.

First and foremost you will need heaters to maintain the climate of your tank at temperature levels which your fish can bear and thrive in. This becomes more important if you have tropical fishes which need high temperatures to flourish. Then you would also need Power filters to maintain the cleanliness of the water. Filters do an important job in making water less stagnant and recreating an aquatic flow similar to a natural water body. Then there are Air Stones which you would need to keep in your tank. These are required to aerate the water for fishes to live healthily.

Along with the above supplies I just mentioned you would need sea salt mix, so that you can recreate the saltwater condition and make the fish feel at home! That creates need for a hydrometer too, which would help you to monitor the state of the water in your saltwater tank.

Now when you are done with the initial preparation, its time to choose your fish. My personal favorites are Damsels. They are probably the best saltwater fish for beginners. They are not fussy eaters and are conditioned to survive in varied water conditions. Another popular option is Clownfish. This species again are tough and can survive adverse conditions in a saltwater aquarium. This particular fish is not an aggressive fish and loves to live with other tank mates in harmony. But if there are lost of clownfish in your tank they tend to be aggressive.

You may also consider having Tangs in your tank. Tangs are very handy in cleaning up the tank from algae. You just need to take care that they are provided with their steady diet if there are not a large collection of algae in your saltwater tank.

Once you are done with the building experience I guarantee that you are going to enjoy the new entrant in your abode. So get ready to welcome a new family in your family!

Saltwater Tank: What Saltwater Fish Tank Supplies You Need

There are a number of saltwater tank supplies and equipment you will need to have a healthy environment for your saltwater fish.  Being familiar and knowing each element is crucial, but it does not have to be overwhelming.  You will find that when most of the saltwater tank supplies are set up you will not need to maintenance them too much.  Most of your maintenance will be in cleaning and water testing.

Some of the more common saltwater tank supplies you will need are: thermometer, filters, pumps, lighting, a heater, sea salt mixes, and water testing kits.  Each one of these tools have an effect on your saltwater fish tank.  The kind of supplies you will need also depends on what you will put in your fish tank.  If you are going to have reef tank you will need more equipment that is more sensitive and if you have just a fish tank you will find there is less equipment and more ‘slack’ in some of the tank monitoring.

While all the saltwater tank supplies are easy to use, you will need to be familiar with each one.  There are numerous resources on the internet you can find to teach you and you should also consult a local expert as well.

People often comment on how hard or how much work their saltwater tank takes.  This is normally due to lack of knowledge before they got started.  Some people will go for a huge tank of 100 gallons or more, while some people think smaller is easier and get a 10 gallon tank.  For beginners it is recommended that you look at saltwater tanks in the sizes of 30-50 gallons.  These sizes allow for a person to get use to the care of a saltwater tank, but it also gives the most room for error.  Large and small tanks require more specific care because you are either needing to tend to bigger area with more marine life to care for or deal with how picky a small tank is with no room for error.

A Well-Balanced Saltwater Fish Tank

There are various ways to maintain a well-balanced saltwater fish tank. It is better for the fish tank keepers learn these things to properly maintain a livable aquarium.

Saltwater tanks are more difficult to maintain because marine life inside has little tolerance to fluctuations. They are used to a stable habitat underwater. Therefore, the key to maintaining saltwater aquarium is copying the general conditions of the sea to your tank such that the marine fishes hardly notice the difference.

It is very useful to study marine life and science of it to start this hobby. It may be quite difficult at first, but if you understand the ecosystem underwater, this hobby will be easier and more interesting for you.

The tank needs a huge amount of water to make it more stable and absorbs shock more easily. This prevents disturbing the equilibrium of water and makes the tank more peaceful for marine life.

For instance, a dead fish will only create a minor imbalance in a big tank, but if it dies in a small tank, there will be dramatic changes.

Nutrient cycles are important to sustain a tank. First, dissolved oxygen comes in to the system over the water-air interface or by the activity of an air pump. The second one is the carbon dioxide which goes out of the system into the air. Other significant nutrient cycles are phosphate cycle, iron, sulfur, and micronutrients. These enter as food and escaping as waste substances.

Water conditions should be checked. Keep it free from dirt. Dead fish or other decaying corals should be removed at once to avoid contaminating the tank. Also check water salinity. It shouldn’t be too salty.

The saltwater is an alkaline, and the pH is the alkalinity or acidicity of fresh water. However, the hardness calculates total dissolved mineral content. In addition, the hard water is often alkaline and the soft water is always acidic. Other significant factors are dissolved organic content and dissolved gases content.

Chloramine is commonly used today because it is more stable. A saltwater fish tanks also need the presence of a mixture of salts and other minerals.

Other tanks are adapting to other water sources also. They change the alkaline content of water, the hardness, or dissolved content of gases and organics before putting it to the fish tank. Additives like sodium bicarbonate also help to raise pH.

The water that would be placed in the fish tank may also be filtered or purified in two different ways: deionization or reverse osmosis.

The water’s temperature creates the basis of one of the two primary fish tank classifications. These are the tropical and cold water. Most water plants and animals can only adapt with a limited range of water temperatures. It is important that the temperature is consistent to minimize fatalities in the tank. Use a thermostat and heater unit or cooling unit to help regulate the water temperature.

Water movement is also significant in perfectly imitating a natural environment. This can be manipulated by the use of aeration from powerheads, air pumps, and proper design of internal water flow like the path of the filtration system points of inflow and outflow.

Saltwater aquarium known as well as marine aquarium, this type of tank is more expensive andmore demanding then a freshwater aquarium but with a little help and with the right guide you can setup your own saltwater tank, I believe that if you have the suitable equipment itwill help you to avoid future problems. Equipment list: 1- Aquarium- as much as the tank is bigger it will by easy tomaintain it, in small tanks any water parameters changes or drop in temperature will lead to disaster wile large tanks are more tolerating, in this type of tank (saltwater) as the tank go bigger the expenses are more significant. 2- Aquarium gravel- substrate such as crashed corals is ideal for saltwater tank. 3- rocks- high quality rocks are essential, as the hobby develop we can see more and more fish keepers using live rock. 4- Saltwater mix. 5- Hydrometer or refractometer- in order to check and monitoring your salinity you should use hydrometer or refractometer, refractometer is very accurate wile the hydrometer use to fake, to my opinion purchase refractometer will be the smart move, you don’t want your tank to crush because your hydrometer fakes. 6- Heater. 7- Protein skimmer-don’t cheap on this equipment, the protein skimmer is one of the most important and essential equipment in saltwater aquarium. 8- Powerheads and wave box. 9- Sump- to my opinion working with a sump is the right thing to do in saltwater aquarium,it is easy to maintain, media capacity are huge and you can store the hearer,Powerheads and other equipment in it. 10- Replacement media such as filter floss, crushed rocks and activated carbon. 11- Aquarium vacuum, fish net, aquarium scraper, 2-3 five gallon clean buckets, aquarium thermometer. 12- Saltwater fish food. 13- Saltwater test kits- in order to test and to monitor your water parameters you will need test kits such as Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphate, Alkalinity 14- Quarantine Tank. 15- Reverse Osmosis.

First thing before entering the hobby is the need to understand that fish are animals just like a cat or a dog and responsibility comes along, responsibility expressed by the need to perform water changes, feeding the fish on daily basis, monitor water condition end even to spend some money on them (fish food, media, medicine), in saltwater aquarium expenses are something you cant ignore, recommended to know this before you start your aquarium setup. Before you purchase an aquarium you should do your homework and make your self list of fish that you want, if you will know what kind of fish you want it will be easy to match a tank, sump and equipment. Purchasing equipment should be done slowly with a lot of homework, make sure to buy appropriate equipment at the beginning instead of purchasing something you will regret on later and then you will be need to replace it.

After deciding what equipment you will need and after you decide what size tank you will need it is time to think where to place it, you should place it away from windows because you don’t want temperatures and light affect your tank, sunlight that enters the room can cause to algae problems and affect the temperatures, it will be smart to avoid it. It is also recommended to place your tank on a massive stand that will be able to hold the tank weight, to know your total tank weight you just need to multiply gallon tank 10 times, for example 100 gallon tank will weight 1000 pounds ( including water), To this calculation add your rocks total weight. Wash out your tank (and your sump) with water only, using chemicals or soap can poison your tank, same thing with your gravel, be sure to wash it with water only in order to remove dirt, do the same with the rocks, If you have live rocks don’t wash them at all, after wash put gravel and rocks in a bucket, you will need them later on. If you want painting the back glass tank this is the time to do so, blue and black are common paints that give the tank illusion of depth and highlight fish colors, after painting let the tank to sit for 1-2 days to allow the paint to dry. When the aquarium is dry you can place it on the stand, now you should hook up your sump to the main tank. Install your heater, protein skimmer (if he is not external), and other equipment you have in the sump, don’t plug the equipment yet just place it.

Now it will be a good time to fill your tank with reverse osmosis, be patient the process take time, while the tank fills with water you can add the salt wile monitoring water salinity with the hydrometer or refractometer, hook up your wave box in order to mix the salt, after the tank is half full with water (stop water at this point) test your salinity again till you have got specific gravity between 1.020 and 1.024, make sure that all the salt mix have dissolve before you make your last salinity test, let the water “run” for at least 2 days. High quality rocks are essential in order to built prosperous bacteria colony, some use live rocks wile some prefer dry rocks. To my opinion in this type of tank (marine) you can save some money and purchase dry rocks. Now you can add your substance (crushed corals) and then and place your rocks in the tank. Before adding any fish you have to wait your tank to be cycled, this process can take several weeks, in this period of time you need to monitor your aquarium water with your test kits, check your PH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and Carbonate hardness levels, also check your water salinity, this are the parameters that you will need to keep: Temperature: 24-27c (75-85F).Ph- 8- 8.4.Salinity – 1.020-1.024. Ammonia: 0. Nitrite:0. Nitrate- 10 ppm or less. Carbonate hardness: 7-10 DKH.

After your tank has cycled you should pass water to your quarantine tank and operate equipment, when your quarantine ready it is time to purchase your first marine fish, in order to acclimate the fish dump the bag into a clean bucket and then add about 1 cup of aquarium water to the bucket every 10 minutes, continue to add 1 cup of aquarium water to the bucket every 10 minutes, do this acclimation process for an hour at least, then take the fish net and carefully introduce the fish to its new home (quarantine tank), in the first day there is no need to feed the fish, month pass by and it is time to move the fish to the main tank, acclimate the fish carefully for at least half hour. Do the same process with every new fish that you are going to purchase. Now, it is time to lay down and enjoy your fish tank, but never forget if you want your tank to look good as it looks right now you have to work for it by monitor the salinity, temperature and water parameters. Change your tank water one time a month, exchange of 15%-20% will be great, don’t forget to replace media and to clean your protein skimmer as well.

If you will do so, enjoyment guaranteed…..

Did you know that the RCA logo was originally a famous painting by Francis Barraud called His Masters Voice. People love to buy live coral and saltwater fish just as much as they love to scuba dive these days, and there is good reason.  The wonders of the deep are beautiful and mystifying, so why would you want to leave this world when you’re done scuba diving and back on dry land?  If you buy saltwater fish and create a realistic aquatic environment in a tank within your home, you can recapture this feeling of being part of the underwater coral reef environment every day.  And even if you have never gone scuba diving, you can appreciate the exquisiteness of a saltwater aquarium.

You will have to do much more than buy salt water fish and dump them into an aquarium full of water to create this marine habitat in your home, but most hobbyists find the effort to be well worth it for the enjoyment and loveliness it provides in return.  It is much easier to set up saltwater aquariums than it used to be, though, thanks to modern technology.  You can also opt to buy live coral and fill your aquarium with that instead of worrying about any fish if you are concerned about the maintenance.  Live coral do require certain conditions to thrive, but they are considered to be much easier to take care of.

It is not easy to set up saltwater fish tanks in a home or office.  Before you buy saltwater fish, you will need to read up on the subject and become familiar with the necessary equipment and all the proper maintenance procedures. Besides the aquarium, the necessary equipment includes saltwater mix, live rocks, aquarium filters, hydrometers, heaters, aquarium vacuums, saltwater fish foods, protein skimmers and various other necessary items.  You must also have proper lighting, which will depend on the types of fish and other life forms inside.

If you do make the investment and buy salt water fish, it will be well worth the upkeep and setup – just imagine feeling like you’re scuba diving off a coral reef every day.

Consider the Beauty of a Saltwater Fish Tank

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/Consider the Beauty of a Saltwater Fish Tank

Salt water fish aquariums come in many different sizes to suit your needs. The size of your aquarium will determine not only how many fish you can have but also what varieties you can have as the difference in the size of tropical fish varies enormously from an inch or two up to a whopping 18 inches.

The major beauty of a salt water fish tank aquarium is the much wider variety of tropical fish that you can add to it. Salt water tropical fish come in a wide variety of colors which will add beauty and color to virtually any home or office aquarium.

Unlike freshwater fish aquariums, saltwater are more intricate to set up, require more maintenance and the aquarium itself plus the fish to go in it are more expensive so it is vital that you do your research and speak to more experienced persons as you go along. You will find though that the types of fish combined with their wonderful colors and striking tails and fins will make it well worthwhile.

When looking for an aquarium, decide firstly where you want it to go. If you are looking at a smaller one, a side board or coffee table will be ideal. For the larger style special stands can be purchased that are designed to withstand the weight and many have a cupboard underneath so you can store equipment, test kits fish food etc. For extra large Aquariums, a cement slab is probably the best plan of action. Aquariums can be made of either glass or acrylic with both having advantages. Glass is more scratch resistant yet heavier and acrylic is lighter yet more prone to scratches although many scratches can be polished out.

Adding plants to you aquarium is ideal, not only do they look good but also act as a filter. Rocks and coral give a totally marine feel and gives the fish a “home”. Other items to you will need for your aquarium are: pump and filter, heater and lights, thermometer, hydrometer, protein skimmer, synthetic sea salt, nets, fish food, rocks and decorations for your aquarium, plus of course, the final thing, your fish.

There are the ever popular clownfish with their distinctive orange and white makings, damsels which are blue in color and can be aggressive and territorial as well as the flame angel. The wonderful golden seahorse is an interesting addition to your aquarium and yellow tang adds another dimension of color to liven things up. Snowflake moray eel and lionfish are more aggressive can care should be taken as they have been known to eat their companions in the tank. Speak to your supplier with regard to other varieties and good companions.

Learning about proper setup and ongoing maintenance of your aquarium is important, speak to your supplier, other enthusiasts and purchase a good book on the topic. There are a number of good magazines available you can subscribe to as well that give you up to date information. A saltwater fish aquarium in your home is not only a great hobby, but makes a stunning feature in a corner or against a plain wall.
