Setting up Your First Fish Tank – Part 1

]]>

This article is intended to help beginners avoid common mistakes when setting up an aquarium for the first time.

The first tank represents the first step into the wonderful word of the aquarium. The problem is that almost no one gets informed before making the first step, which is usually wrong one, leading to serious consequences on the fish.

Most of people hurry to buy a tank and two fish from each species they can find in the pet-shop. Also the first tank is small, and usually crowded with incompatible species. This is because the seller tries to make as much profit as possible from a novice in this world. But ultimately we can not blame the pet-stores sellers and owners, nor can we deprive them of profit and let them starve, so before you buy the first aquarium you should read about everything related.

The aquarium

The tank may be different sizes and shapes, depending on the creativity of those who built it and the fish species for which it is built. The most common form is the rectangular parallel piped shape tank, but there are aquariums in the form of a cube, hexagon, bowl, etc. A beginner’s tank is usually quite small, because we all start with the wrong impression that a small aquarium is easy to maintain. You can’t possibly be more wrong, the tank is a biotope, a copy of nature, the smaller the tank the easier is to unbalance, so any changes in its parameters can easily cause deaths in the fish population. Don’t start an aquarium smaller than 10 gallons. Don’t rush at all. Read and inform yourself before you go buy. You probably want to have fish right away, this is not the case, and you will need equipment and a lot more knowledge before you start introducing the fish.

Required Equipment:

Filter, air pump with hose and air stone, heater, thermometer, hose for changing the tank water, fish landing to catch fish.

Bearded dragon diet

The bearded dragon dietary needs may surprise you. Bearded dragons are omnivorous so they need both vegetables and insects for their food. The feeding necessities of your dragon will require your efforts in traveling to the pet store often to provide the proper nutrition. They should have a good variety of foods that may include crickets and finely chopped leafy greens. It is best to avoid too much iceburg lettuce and similar lettuces since they offer little nutritional value.

Bearded dragon facts

Bearded dragons are a popular reptile pet for owners who desire a reptile pet. They are native to Australia and live in arid rocky regions. With a triangular head and flat body they are omnivorous eaters enjoying both plants and insects. They are a docile animal and fairly easy to care for. In captivity they tend to do best when their diet includes a large amount of vegetables though they will eat about anything that gets in front of them.

Komodo dragons seem to be a left over from prehistoric times and they will show us a glimpse of some amazing aspects of the reptilian monsters who roam our earth with us. Keep in mind that most animals in nature seek to avoid human contact and the predators of the wild seem to be the most elusive.

Bearded dragon pictures

Bearded dragons are a favorite in the pet world often due to their unusual looks. Bearded dragon pictures definitely give us the feeling of looking at an ancient creature and indeed this species of lizard looks a lot like the ferocious dragons of myth and folklore that we see in movies today. They have horns on their head and surrounding their jaw. It is not hard to imagine these horns growing to extreme proportions along with the dragon itself.

Dragon photos

Are dragons real? While most people say that dragons are not real I think that the question and its answer is actually more complicated than that. I don’t think the question we should be asking is so much if they exist as it is what they are. Dragons as spoken of in history are described as a serpent or reptile often of large proportion. Depending on the culture or the part of the world you get your stories from they have different attributes all of which can be attributed to living…

The decision has been made and the tank has been bought and kept in its place of honour. The question now arises what exactly is it that you need to put in this tank to allow an ecosystem of sorts to flourish.

The substrate is essential to the tank and comes right at the beginning, or in this case right at the bottom of the tank. While deciding between small and large sized substrates, there are several things to keep in mind but do remember that the smaller stuff is more liked by the fish. Sand and small rocks are a cheap if not free part of small substrate and easy to get. They also help dressing up the tank. But if your fish pick this stuff up and keep it in their mouth, which they tend to do with the smaller substrate, expect irritation in their mouth.

Rocks, pebbles and things like these form the medium-sized substrate and is often seen in tanks. Big substrate means things like river rocks- rarely to be seen in freshwater tanks. Sometimes a bottom layer of big substrate gives the tank a grand look but this can trap food particles that float down – contaminating the water and potentially hurting the fish.

Before you add any new substrates, consider the affect they can have on the water. Crushed coral has the potential to increase the Ph levels in water. Substrate can also affect the fish in other ways.

Certain substrates are to be avoided in your freshwater aquarium setup as they damage the water. These include dolomite. geodes, granite, lava rock, limestone, onyx, quartz, sandstone, shells and slate.

To figure out if other things that you would like to add to the tank – which may not have been purchased for it specifically – you should run a couple of tests. One way is to put lots of drops of vinegar on the rocks or the gravel that you plan to place in the tank. If it creates some foam or fizz or has an unexpected reaction, you should not use it. This is because it contains calcium that affects the water.

A second way is to place the substrate material in a bucket of water that is to be used in your freshwater aquarium and run a test for pH balance and hardness. Let the material be in the bucket for a week and if you see no major change then this is usable.

A variety of testing kits are available online or at pet stores. You must know which ones are needed and which just a waste of your money.

Unusual pH levels lead to stress for your fish and their death so a pH Levels Test Kit is a must. If you observe pH ‘drifting’ or unexpected changes, check the Carbonate Hardness (KH) levels of the water.

Ammonia levels need to be high during the freshwater aquarium setup period and not later but this can happen due to dirty water, filters, medicines or even overstocking of the tank. That’s why an Ammonia Test Kit is necessary.

Make sure that the nitrite levels are less than 1.0. Nitrite is a toxic byproduct left after organic waste breaks down.

While nitrate is a medium-level poison for fish, high levels can still be damaging and it needs to be maintained at or below 300 ppm (parts per million).

In a freshwater aquarium setup most owners have several things they would like to plug in. Considering that this involves a mix of water and electricity, invest in a power strip that is waterproof and offers protection against surges.

      1. Tank Decisions

Decide on the size of tank you want and the material its made of. Choose from glass or acrylic, with and without metal frames. Acrylic will be lighter but tends to scratch. You will not want a tank less than 45 cm long, 30 cm wide and 30 cm deep unless you are buying it as a hospital, quarantine or breeding tank.

Because the numbers of fish you can have in a tank is based on the surface area of your aquarium (width x length) the depth is irrelevant. As a rule, divide the surface area by 12 to get the length in fish you can accommodate. For example a 24 x 12 x 12 (inches) tank has a surface area of 288 sq ins and will accommodate 24 inches of fish; 24 x 1 inch or 12 x 2 inch fish etc etc.

But bear in mind that you should use the adult length of the fish in your calculations. Otherwise your aquarium will become overcrowded as the your fish grow and there will probably not be enough oxygen to sustain them.

      2. Heating System
Unless you are planning to stock cold water fish only, then you will need to install a heater and thermostat (separate or combined). Often a glass tube with both of them in will be used with temperature control on the top of it and a separate thermometer installed.

You may need to fit two heaters in larger tanks to ensure the heat is distributed evenly. Allowing 10 watts per gallon of water would mean a 150 watt heater for a 12 gallon tank.

      3. Lighting System
Lighting is necessary for plant growth and also shows off the fish at their colorful best. Fluorescent tubes are available for this purpose and give off less heat than other types of bulb. The lights are usually installed into your tank cover. And remember that fish don’t want a tank lit up for 24 hours.

Mimic nature by subduing the light or turning it off in the evenings. Your ventilated cover will not only hold the lighting system but also protect the fish from household pollutants (sprays, dust, dirt etc) but keep them from jumping out and prevent loss of water by evaporation.

      4. Aeration and Filtration
An air pump is not essential and if it used to get more oxygen (and therefore more fish) into your tank and it fails then your fish will die! But it can be used in combination with a filter to clean up the water. For example a filter may have a combination of a physical layer of material to collect fine solids and a layer of charcoal to chemically adsorb organic pollutants and maintain the water quality.

Air can be passed into the tank via air stones on the end of the tubing. Ensure you have a n anti-siphon valve for the air pump. Use of an under gravel filter (a biological filter) system involves a flat plate with outlets that goes under the gravel substrate and is powered by an air pump pushing air and water through the substrate which encourages bacteria to develop in it that will break down the toxic waste products from the fish, dead plants etc.

      5. Tank Aquascaping
Decorations cover real rocks, synthetic rocks, real wood, synthetic wood and background panorama. They act as areas for the fish to hide and for shelter if they feel like it. Also as a resting area at night or in the day for nocturnal species. Look out for rocks with a high calcium content (limestone) as that will make your water hard and unless a specific requirement will not do any good. And do not use any that appear to have metallic content in them.

Caves can be set up for cave-dwelling species by joining a few rocks together with silicone sealant or you could buy a purpose made one. Rocks can be built up to form the background or you could employ a photographic underwater scene wrapped around the back and sides of the tank to great effect. Use your rocks and logs etc to hide your equipment from view.

Remember to wash not only your decorations but also your substrate gravel which will slope from about 2 inches deep at the front to 3 inches deep at the back. Run water through the gravel until it becomes clear.

You are only restricted by your imagination when developing your aquascape. But bear in mind that you want to maintain a balance and keep a realistic amount of free swimming area for both the fish and you to see them enjoying themselves.

The remaining five steps in setting up your tropical fish tank covering water quality, aquarium plants, fitting out your aquarium, selecting healthy fish and adding fish to your tank, can be accessed below.

Freshwater Aquarium Fish are Good Choice for Beginners

Freshwater aquarium fish, as opposed to their bright and flashy cousins of the saltwater variety, can be a good experience for people who have never cared for fish before. Saltwater aquarium tanks can be quite challenging to set up and properly maintain. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that those new to fish keeping, look first at starting with freshwater fish.

Cichlids are known to bring color to a room by its mere appearance. Its behavior also paves way for a very entertaining spectacle. These two reasons are just some of the reasons why more and more people have started to collect and breed cichlids. If you are a first-timer at this, you have to understand some basic cichlid necessities, such as the cichlid aquarium setup.

As we all know, the cichlids in an aquarium need several things in order to enjoy its habitat. Making all of these possible would entail basic knowledge and understanding on your part. In turn, it would lead to an immeasurable degree of health and wellness for your cichlid. Here are some things to consider while you are setting up the new home of your cichlids:

In choosing a tank, you should be very meticulous. This means that you should select a good brand. Aside from this, the dimensions of the tank should also be wide enough for your cichlids to swim around in. Ideally, the tank should have a large volume. Meanwhile, a large surface area for the tank is also required to make your fishes comfortable and healthy.

What sort of decorations to include. It is common knowledge that cichlids or any fish, for that matter, need to live in an aquarium that is similar to its original habitat. This emphasizes the importance of putting plants, gravel and other decors inside the aquarium. Cichlids would also appreciate this because it would give them more ways to divide the aquarium in different territories.

Get your hands on a good filter. Filters are important in an aquarium setup because these materials keep the aquarium safe from pollutants. If you want your cichlids to be healthy, you should prioritize sanitation for their habitat. The best way to do that is through the use of a reliable filter.

Set the water temperature at a desirable level for cichlids. This is essential because keeping cichlids mean that they should receive ample heat. Get equipment that can enable you to heat at least a watt of heating per one liter of water. Once this is secured, you can already be able to respond well to the needs of your cichlid in terms of its habitat.

Cichlids are truly beautiful types of fishes. Do not waste their worth by not taking care of them. The least you can do is to feed them well and to put up an ideal aquarium setup for them.

        Cichlid Breeding Care

While Cichlid breeding can be accomplished easily for some Cichlid species, it can be quite difficult with others, requiring special conditions and care. Cichlid breeding is much easier and produces far greater results when the Cichlids are well taken care of and given conditions similar to their natural habitat.

Setting up a new fish tank is quite simple. A golden rule to remember is to never buy the tank and fish on the same day. Majority of the aquariums are made from clear glass, optiwhite glass, or acrylic material. Glass tanks offer resistance to scratch but are much heavier than acrylic tanks.

There are several UK aquarium manufacturers that are listed on SearchMe4, UK’s leading online business directory. Custom built aquariums can be fashioned into any design the customer desires, for instance a custom tank was made from the shell of an Apple Macintosh computer, and some have been made into coffee tables, sinks, and even toilets. Tropical fish tanks are very colourful with attractive aquarium accessories.

First and foremost, you will have to buy the equipment which includes a glass tank with an air driven under gravel filter, plastic top with a fluorescent light, one pound-per-gallon of aquarium gravel, an air pump and a hanging heater, plastic plants, decorations. When deciding on the size of the fish tank keep in mind that larger tanks are easier to clean, can hold many more fish, and they provide more stable water conditions.

Once you have all your equipment, setting up your new fish tank is a piece of cake. Place your fish tank on a glass display cabinet or somewhere you will enjoy and be able to look after your fish. Make sure to place your tank away from direct sunlight and in a permanent place since moving your fish tank can be pretty hectic. Place the Under Gravel Filter (UGF), on the bottom of the tank and the lift tubes in their sockets, and check the setup instructions on the filter container.

Next, rinse the gravel and spread it out for even layer, avoid many dips in it as it slopes to the rear of the tank, to make your cleaning job simpler. Now can add the heater and water pumps someplace where you can see it so you can tell when it is on. The air pump should be placed above the water level to avoid the pump and other things from damaging.

The heaters and air pumps should be unplugged or else they can break when you add water. Thoroughly wash and place all your decorations. Add the water, once it is full, let it sit for an hour or so, to saturate your air stones and to equalize the heater temperature. Allow for a day or two before getting any fish to ensure that all of your equipment is working properly.

When setting up your tropical fish tank you need to consider ten specific elements. Here we cover the first five to do with the tank, heating, lighting, filtration & aeration and landscaping.

In calculating how many fish can be accommodated in your tank the depth is not taken into consideration as it is based on the surface area which is the length times the width.

If you have a bigger tank the heat may not get around as efficiently so you will probably install two heaters. For a twelve gallon aquarium you would need a one hundred and fifty watt heater based on having ten watts for every gallon.

          3. Lighting System

Lighting is necessary for plant growth and also shows off the fish at their colorful best. Fluorescent tubes are available for this purpose and give off less heat than other types of bulb. The lights are usually installed into your tank cover. It is not advisable to have your tank lighting on all day.

At night, in order to achieve conditions seen in the wild, you can dim the lighting or switch it off.

You do not want to use rocks that are limestone based as the calcium in it will produce harder water unless of course this type of water is recommended.

The apparatus used in your aquarium can be disguised by using your ornaments, logs and rocks.

Wash the gravel substrate before use, as well as ornaments, decorations, rocks etc and grade the level of the gravel from three inches at the back to about two at the front. Run water through the gravel until it becomes clear.

You are only restricted by your imagination when developing your aquascape. But bear in mind that you want to maintain a balance and keep a realistic amount of free swimming area for both the fish and you to see them enjoying themselves.

The remaining five steps in setting up your tropical fish tank cover water quality, aquarium plants, fitting out your aquarium, selecting healthy fish and adding fish to your tank.

The Filter is the most important single piece of equipment (after the tank and water). The filter has the role of cleaning the water of impurities and oxygenating the water. No tank should be deprived of this device because it has an important role in maintaining a clan and healthy water for the fish. In stores you can find several types of filters, depending on the position or method if construction. Thus there are two main types of filters:

          - Internal filters, are mostly used by beginners, they are inserted completely in the tank. They consist of a pump that pulls water through a sponge, so that impurities remain trapped in the sponge mass, resulting in cleaner water. There not the most efficient filters because the sponge is quit small and the water doesn’t get cleaned very well. But have the advantages of being very cheap (price starting from 5$) and east to install and use. One of the most popular brands on the market is: Resun, Aquael, Fluval etc. The options are many, you can choose according to you budget and needs.

          - External filters, are positioned outside the aquarium, have higher filtering surface, they are also more powerful and more efficient in every way over the internal filters. There only disadvantage is the price, they are the most expensive from all the filters, with an average starting price of 100$. They are indicated for larger aquariums, like 40 gallons or more, but these kinds of filters are available for smaller tank too.

The air pump is an electrically powered device that produces a stream of air which is streamed through a hose directly into the aquarium. At the aquarium end of the hose will be placed an air stone, which allows its output in the form of very fine bubbles that are designed to oxygenate the water. Most internal filters are equipped with a hose which introduces air in the form of fine bubbles in the tank, thus reduces the need for air pumps. Without a filter, the air pump is the only thing that would keep the fish alive longer without changing the water daily. If you don’t have the resources to buy a mechanical filter, you can make a biological filter with an air pup and a sponge by inserting the air stone into the sponge. The bigger the sponge is the more efficient the biological filter will be. The main role of the sponge in aquariums is meant to be a “house” for bacteria that will transform harmful substances into less harmful ones, respectively nitrite into nitrate.

Setting Up Your First Tank – Part 3

The heater is electrically powered and (a resistor placed into a glass capsule with a thermostat) its main role is to maintain a stable temperature in the aquarium. Depending in what part of the world you live in, in the summer you might not need the heater because the temperature can easily reach between 25 and 30 degrees (Celsius), but when the climate is colder the water temperature must not vary or decrease too much.

Pet rabbits are just like stuffed bunny rabbits in appearance but they can not be handled in the same manner. It can be really difficult to handle and care for just one single rabbit. They definitely require a big and spacious cage, water to drink, and something or another to eat.

Live coral can create a beautiful and mystical underwater scene in your home or office, and once you have set up an aquarium and filled it with some of these wondrous creatures you might find that you don’t need any fish at all. You may also find that some fish, like the Golden Butterfly, are not compatible with reef aquariums because they like to eat the corals. So before you go looking for live coral for sale, you will want to learn as much about caring for these saltwater animals as possible. The first thing you will need to do before you shop for live coral is set up your aquarium. Most hobbyists suggest getting at least a 50-gallon tank, but if you really want to create a good visual impact, you will probably want something bigger. Then you will need the rocks, filters, temperature gauge, lights, skimmer, salt mix and other tools. Decorations and plants can also give the tank a really authentic underwater look. Once you have the water at the right conditions for your specific types of corals, then you can place them in the aquarium. Some of the live coral for sale in the local fish store and online will be better for a beginner’s reef tank than others. Most of the preferable choices will be in the soft coral family, although there are certain hard corals such as the Montipora and Pagoda that are also good for beginners. The most well known soft corals that beginners usually start their tanks with are the Mushroom Corals, Colt Corals, Star Polyps, Zoanthid Polyps, Button Polyps and Flower Leather Corals. There are various books and guides that will help you set up your reef aquarium correctly, and there is additional information about fish like the Golden Butterfly that you will want to avoid. There are also many types of fish you can learn about that are very appropriate for cohabitating with corals.

Saltwater enthusiast have developed a love affair with coral reefs. There is nothing they love better then to design, stock and maintain a saltwater aquarium that is teaming with coral.

For years only the most adventurous were brave enough to tackle the challenges proposed by a reef saltwater aquarium. Until recently coral reef was notoriously hard to maintain.

Times have changed. Now there are several varieties of coral that even the most novice saltwater aquarium owner can enjoy.
The key to successfully maintaining a reef saltwater aquarium is to have your saltwater reef aquarium properly set up.

The first thing you’ll want to find is a tank. Select the largest possible tank that you feel comfortable with. The greater the size of your tank, the greater the water mass encompassing the reef, and the more you will be able to duplicate the effects of the ocean. You can choose either the classic look of a glass aquarium or you can select an acrylic tank which gives you a larger variety of shapes and styles. Acrylic tanks are also more durable then glass tanks. Make sure that there is absolutely no copper anywhere in the tank. Copper has a lethal affect on coral.

Before adding the coral to your tank make sure that the temperature of your water stays consistent. The temperature should remain at 23-25 degrees Celsius (73-77 degrees Fahrenheit). Your coral will remain healthier in water that is always at the same temperature.

It is very important that your reef saltwater aquarium be properly filtered. The three types of filters are mechanical, biological, and chemical.

A mechanical filter is a filter made out of spun nylon floss. Mechanical filter trap and remove wasteful material and prevent your chemical and biological filters from becoming clogged. There are a variety of biological filters. Some use the tanks aquarium substrate as a part of the filtration system. The purpose of biological filters is to contain the biochemical properties and to break down waste products.

Chemical filters absorbs the ions of dissolved waste. Chemical filters are typically based on active carbon.

Many reef saltwater aquarium owners like to use other products such as Bioballs and Protein Skimmers to assist with their filtration system.

The PH level of a reef saltwater aquarium should hold steady at 8.2.

Coral reefs require a filtration system that circulates the tanks water. Moving water tends to be rich in oxygen and the currents carry food to the invertebrates living inside the immobile coral. A submersible pump will do wonders to increase the water flow in a saltwater aquarium.

When you decide that it is time to stock your reef saltwater aquarium with fish you need to remember a few things before rushing out to your favorite fish store.

Bear in mind that just because a variety of fish lives in the ocean does not automatically mean that it’s compatible with coral. Some fish eat the invertebrates that make the coral reef their home. Some fish produce waste that is toxic to the coral. Some fish, like Blow-fish, produce a toxin when they die that can kill every living organism in your aquarium.

          Coin Collection Grading Standards Guide

U.S. numismatists work with a highly developed grading system that classifies minute differences between grades. Although attempts have been made to impose U.S. standards on the rest of the world, most countries are perfectly happy with their own, simpler grading standards that they’ve used for centuries.

If you’re buying a coin with the hopes of making a profit, the three most desirable characteristics of a coin are, in our opinion, liquidity, liquidity, and liquidity (which means how fast they can be sold). Your coin can be the most beautiful thing in the world, the rarest coin ever known to humankind, and of the highest quality obtainable, but if you can’t sell it quickly to take advantage of market opportunities, it’s worthless.

          Keeping Chicken As Pet

Chicken by nature are evasive of human contact as most animals and birds are. Chickens raised as pets would not tend to run away as much when the bond and the trust have already been established. They would not mind too much the stroking and the cuddling when truly acclimatized to human contact. The chicken may run to you when they know that you bring a treat but that is just as far as it usually goes.

It can be fun to set up a fish tank aquarium but as in all hobbies it pays to do some research before you start. Before you purchase any fish you need to cycle the tank correctly to ensure that there are sufficient bacteria to cope with the waste products of your fish. We recommend a fishless cycling method detailed below.

          Choosing the Tank

Fish tank aquariums can be purchased in glass or acrylic. Glass tanks are cheaper, are heavier and occasionally spring leaks. Acrylic tanks are more expensive, rarely leak, come in a variety of shapes but do scratch easily. Acrylic tanks usually last longer than glass tanks.

          Fish Tank Shape

Acrylic tanks come in a variety of shapes including cylinder, hexagon, octagon and round as well as the traditional rectangular shape. There are also wall tanks and coffee table tanks. The traditional rectangular shape is still the best however as the water volume to surface area is a maximum giving good gas exchange. For other shapes, with smaller water volume to surface area ratio, maintenance will be higher and more frequent water changes will be needed.

In general buy the largest tank that will fit where you will be placing it and you can afford. A larger tank requires less maintenance and you can fit in more fish without risking overcrowding.

          Fishless Cycling Method

          Requirements

Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate testing strips

Bacteria culture from an established tank – this can be some filter material or some gravel

Alternatively use a commercial preparation such as Colonize by Dr Foster & Smith or Biospira by Marineland
          Unscented ammonia

          Method

After adding the bacteria culture to your newly set up tank add 5 drops of ammonia for every ten gallons of water. Test for ammonia. If nothing registers add a few more drop until you get a reading. Continue to add the same amount every day until you can detect nitrites in the tank. Now add half the amount of ammonia daily until nitrate registers on the testing strip. At this point the nitrite levels should start to drop. When they reach zero the tank is cycled. Do a 30% water change and you are ready for your fish.

          Choosing the Fish

Carefully research the types of fish that can be kept together. Community fish are those that live peacefully with each other. All the fish listed below are suitable for a tropical community fish tank.

Carefully inspect the fish tanks at the pet shop to make sure the fish look healthy and no dead fish are in the tanks. Research the fish you will be buying carefully and check up on their temperature and water quality requirements. Tropical fish will need a higher temperature than goldfish. Some fish are relatively peaceful when young but are bullies when fully grown. Tiger barbs are good examples of these.

Always avoid overcrowding. You will need a larger tank for bigger fish. For angel fish never use a tank smaller than ten gallons. After purchase never introduce fish to an established tank but quarantine in a separate tank for at least a week to ensure you do not introduce disease organisms into you tank.
