Fish Tank Sand Pros and Cons – Should You Use Sand or Gravel?

Fish tank gravel is what most people use to cover the floor of their fish tanks. While gravel is a popular choice, there is also aquarium sand available at pet retailers and online fish supply stores. Aquarium sand can give your aquarium a tropical look, but fish tank gravel is economical and easier to use. The best decision for your tank can only be made after you weigh the pros and cons.

Gravel is the easiest fish tank floor covering to use. It comes in many different colors that you can use to customize the look of your tank. You can have everything from neon green and pink to natural looking grey and brown stones.

Gravel is also easier to clean. You can use a gravel vacuum during the cleanup process to suck up small bits of debris and waste. The vacuum will eliminate the tiny pieces while still leaving the gravel intact on the fish tank floor.

On the other hand, gravel shifts a lot more than sand does. If you plan on using live plants in your aquarium design, you may find that they will become disheveled and unplanted over time. It can also display pockets and needs to be smoothed out from time to time.

Aquarium sand is a bit trickier to use. You must turn off the filter on your tank when you first start to use the sand. It is very cloudy to begin with and you have to give it time to settle. You also may need to get an upgraded filter that won’t get stuck on the tiny sand particles. Debris shows up much more clearly with sand than it does with gravel.

On the positive side, live plants root well in the sand surface. Sand gives a much more professional look to your tank. It’s also an aesthetically pleasing choice if you have a tank with tropical fish.

Setting Up Your First Fish Tank

I still remember every minute of the day I got my first fish tank. So, if you don’t want to repeat the whole process very soon, I would recommend getting the largest tank that you can accommodate.

Here is an approximate pricing of fish tanks and aquarium kits and equipments to guide you in your shopping for products either online or at your nearby pet shop. Rates of products for the fish-keeping hobby differ in terms of size, dimensions, shape, style, materials and manufacturers. For example, a glass aquarium is relatively cheaper than an acrylic aquarium. However, in terms of shipping, the acrylic tank is easier transported from the shop to your home than the glass version because of the latter’s fragility. Each pet store has interesting packages to offer that a purchased aquarium usually comes in a package of filters, heaters and light. Remember that in some offers though, you actually may not need some of the products included in the package that it is best to have completed your design first and to have a full list of your aquarium needs before you go shopping. When you have good accurate info, it will make your shopping journey a little easier.

Nowadays, a purchased aquarium usually comes in a package of filters, heaters and lights. In some offers though, you actually may not need some of the products included in the package so it is best to have completed list for your aquarium needs before you go shopping. Then, you can canvass on the price and shop around. To buy a freshwater aquarium takes persistence but it is worth the effort.

Here is an approximate pricing of fish tanks and some extra advice to guide you in your shopping.

    Small Tanks

Small tanks are tanks with 2 to 15 gallons and cost anywhere from up to and will often include many of the extra pieces built right into the tank for convienience. A fish bowl usually costs around -25 depending on the size of the bowl and is still popular in offices around the world and is typically around 1 to 3 gallons, especially with the world famous Betta Fish. Small fish tanks are popular because they are only for a fish or two and can fit on any desk or table. These are the popular small fish tanks and the ones that sell the most.

Another popular type of fish tank that sells well is the small rectangular aquarium, that are 10 gallons in size and are 20 x 8 x 12 inches in measurements. These can cost around and are popular in small offices and home offices around the world.

    Medium-Sized Tanks

These tanks range from 20 to 60 gallons in weight and can range in price from around up to 0 and that often will not include the extra accessories that you will need to make the aquarium function properly. The most common shapes for the medium sized aquariums are Rectangular and Hexagon.

These aquariums function great, are easy to clean, and are popular in homes and offices across the world and are also easy to set up. They are also the aquariums that can be the biggest nightmare to repair if something goes wrong or the person handling the maintenance does not know what they are doing. In getting a aquarium in this price range, speak first to a store clerk to be sure to get great advice before you make your purchase, and ask them questions like “what is the most popular problem that people have complained about with this size aquarium and exactly how do I prevent this problem”, which will get you excellent free information.

Another point worth mentioning about medium sized aquariums are that, because they are popular in sales, you can get a great deal on accessories and equipment at pet stores with huge discounts of the stores list prices. This is a huge help because it will give you more tank for your money or extra supplies for free, like free fish food for a year or something great like that.

    Large Tanks

Finally, large tanks range from 80 gallon on up and are the most expensive ones. aquariuns these size require not only expert care, but also the best maintenance as they are found only in large homes and professional offices. Their selling prices are typically 0 and up and can easily run over a thousand dollars for one aquarium. If you step into aquariums this size, be prepared with a huge bank account as the average person cannot afford this as a hobby. You can find large aquariums that can be over one thousand gallons and be in many different shapes and sizes.

These types of aquariums are often custom built and can be made into all of the popular shapes that you might want as well as some shapes that you might think are not possible but they are. Large aquariums are only maintained by professionals. No one in an office or home setting are going to be able to deal with the constant maintenance and upkeep of an aquariums as large as one thousand gallons. These giants are not that popular for price reasons but smaller, large aquariums like around 150 gallons are popular enough that they keep professionals busy year round.

My advice to someone with a large aquarium is to ONLY have the proofessional handle your maintenance and upkeep. It will be cumbersome and it will be a ton of work so leave it to the pros. If you do decide to do it yourself, you will probably regret a few months later, as most people do with tanks this size.

A Brief Word on Custom Aquariums

A custom aquarium is an aquarium that is not in mass production and not typically for sale in your local fish stores shelves. This means that the fish tank can be small and still cost you a small fortune to have it made. It can be shaped to be like a sink, a coffee table, an office desk, a phone booth or any other object your mind can dream up.

The cost for custom aquariums range from several hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, with most expensive one that I have ever heard of the size of a giant swimming pool that cost over one million dollars.

I would not consider this unless I were a millionaire as this can be brutally expensive and even the coffee table version will cost you a lot of money as it is said to cost around fifty thousand dollars for a completely custom one!

A saltwater fish tank is used for keeping fish that are used to living in salty waters.

In the 1950′s it was popular to keep marine fish as pets. People would visit their local beach with their aquarium in hand hoping to pick themselves up a cheap pet for their children.Compressors were used to keep the water healthy but nowadays filters and substances such as salt mixes are available to add to the water which are used to regulate the water to ensure the correct environment. Electric filters and pumps and heaters all now make life easier for the fish enthusiast.

How Big Should My Saltwater Fish Tank Be?,

A large Saltwater fish tank is far better than a small tank, the experts recommend the saltwater fish tank to be at least fifty five gallons. It also depends on a few things such as the following:

•How much money you have to spend
    •How much room you have

Choosing The Correct Synthetic Salt Mix For Your Saltwater Fish Tank

To ensure the healthy survival of your fish the water in your saltwater fish tank needs to be maintained to a level which is the closest to seawater as possible The following salt mixes do a very good job:

    •Chlorine
    •Sodium
    •Calcium
    •Potassium
    •Silicon
    •Sulfur
    •Magnesium
    •bromine

The following (not all) are also required in smaller quantities to maintain the suitable levels to ensure your fish survive: Your local supplier will be able to advise you as to the quantities needed.

    •iron
    •copper
    •iodine
    •cobalt
    •chromium
    •manganese

Beginners Tips For Your Saltwater Fish Tank

When stocking your saltwater fish tank with fish begin by introducing a few inexpensive fish. Make sure the fish are not ill. Try and choose the largest tank that you can afford preferably made from glass as acrylic tanks tend to scratch easily. Damsels are very easy to keep in a wide range of water conditions and are great for the beginner. Marine fish such as grammas, basslets, and hawkfishes should only be introduced when you have a good knowledge of and experience with marine fish.

Why You Should Research Aquarium Supplies Before Buying Them

Why You Should Research Aquarium Supplies Before Buying Them

Have you recently purchased a new fish tank? If you have, have you already purchased the necessary supplies? If you haven’t already done so, you will need to do so. Unless you purchase an aquarium kit, you will need to purchase your aquariums supplies on your own, possibly even individually. If this is your first time owning an aquarium, you may be unsure as to what supplies you will need. That is why it is advised that you thoroughly research and examine aquarium supplies, before you go about making your purchases.

When it comes to researching aquarium supplies, there are a large number of individuals who wonder why it is important. There are many individuals who think that doing a little bit of research is a waste of their time. Yes, you may be able to walk into a fish tank supply store or even do your shopping online and walk away with all of the needed aquarium supplies, but there are no guarantees. That is why it is advised that you first research aquarium supplies, before making any of your aquarium supply purchases. In fact, there are also a number of benefits to doing so.

One of the many benefits to first researching aquarium supplies is that you will make sure that you purchase everything that you need, the first time around. Should you only end up guessing what aquarium supplies you need, you may end up being wrong. This may not only result in you not getting the supplies that you need, but it may also result in you purchasing the wrong aquarium supplies or even too many of them. Anyway that you look at it, you could be spending more money than you need to. To save yourself time, money, and unnecessary purchases, it is advised that you take a few minutes and research the fish tank that you have and the supplies that should be used with it.

Another benefit of first researching your needed aquarium supplies, before actually buying them is the fact that it is relatively easy to do. When it comes to researching aquarium supplies, you will find that you have a number of different options, all of which are easy. One easy way that you can go about researching aquarium supplies that you may need is by using the internet. To determine what aquarium supplies you may need to purchase, you are advised to examine the aquarium that you recently purchased and its purpose. For instance, are you interested in keeping saltwater fish in you aquarium? If so, your aquarium will need to be set up differently than a freshwater aquarium, and so on. In addition to using the internet, you may also be able to find information in printed guides.

Speaking of printed guides, you are urged to examine the owner’s manual that should come with your new aquarium, as most aquariums are equipped with them. Although an owner’s manual might not divulge too much information, it may give you insight into some of the aquarium supplies that you may need to purchase. For instance, it is not uncommon for an owner’s manual to come with an aquarium supplies checklist or at least briefly outline the supplies that will be needed. As it was previously mentioned, different aquariums may need to have different aquariums supplies; therefore, examining your new aquarium’s owners’ manual is a nice and relatively simple way to get the information that you may need.

Another way that you can go about researching aquarium supplies or at least learn more about the aquarium supplies that you may need is by speaking with a fish tank supplier. A large number of fish tank supply stores, including those that are located both online and offline, have a number of customer service representatives that may be able to offer you assistance. That assistance could not only include outlining which aquarium supplies you should purchase, but it may also include recommendations, such as a particular supply make and model. If this is your first time purchasing fish tank supplies, speaking to a professional fish tank supply expert may be the perfect way to go. In fact, you may not only get the advice that you were looking for, but you may also find a large selection of aquarium supplies available at the same time!

If you are interested in learning more about aquarium suppliers or if you would just like the go about purchasing the aquarium supplies that you need, you are urged to examine FishTanksDirect.com. With a large selection of aquarium supplies, including aquarium cleaning supplies, aquarium chillers, protein skimmers, filters, and much more, you are sure to find exactly what you need at FishTanksDirect.com.

Fish Tanks Direct sells custom aquariums factory direct to you. Biorbs are a great alternative to acrylic aquariums or saltwater reef tanks. Buy one today!

Should You Add Live Rock To Your Saltwater Aquarium?

Should You Add Live Rock To Your Saltwater Aquarium?

A popular new trend among people starting saltwater aquariums is to create a FOWLR environment.  FOWLR stands for Fish Only With Live Rock.  What this acronym states is that within your saltwater environment you will include both rocks which have been harvested from the sea floor and saltwater fish.  The combination of these “live rocks” with saltwater fish brings an attractive marine ecosystem into your very own home.

Harvesting natural rock from the sea floor is illegal therefore you must purchase rock that has been placed on the sea floor and allowed to “grow.”  In other words, after sitting on the sea floor for a number of years, natural marine life inhabits the transplanted rock which are then harvested.  Many different algae, corals, sponges, and crustaceans can be found on these “live rocks.” These rocks are cured to ensure their quality and can then be purchased for your personal saltwater aquarium.

Including these rocks into a saltwater aquarium must be done with careful consideration.  Many different species of fish, some of which you may desire for your saltwater aquarium, feed on the algae, corals, crustaceans, and invertebrates found on “live rocks.”  Be sure to research the natural food sources for the fish that you desire to incorporate into a FOWLR saltwater aquarium.

Another thing to consider when starting a FOWLR saltwater aquarium
is the type of filtration you will use.  Many of the inhabitants on “live rocks” are filter feeders.  They sift small pieces of debris and nutrition from the water.  When you consider putting “live rocks” in a saltwater aquarium know that they cannot stand alone as the only source of filtration.  Another system must be used to ensure that you are filtering out debris and pollutants from your saltwater aquarium that could potentially harm the entire environment.

Know that a FOWLR saltwater aquarium is full of natural beauty but will require some care to ensure that your saltwater environment is healthy.  Click here for more information about starting a saltwater aquarium

What Type of Aquarium Should I use for Breeding

What Type of Aquarium Should I use for Breeding

Breeding fish is something that most fish keepers try doing eventually. If you are planning to breed your fish there are a few things that you will need in order to breed fish successfully. Some of the most important things while breeding fish include baby food and a separate tank. If you are wondering what type of aquarium you should use for breeding, then this article will answer all your questions.

The aquarium that should be used for breeding should be a separate aquarium that is large enough to fit the breeding fish in while allowing them to swim around and get away from each other if things get rough. If you are planning to breed Siamese Spelndens then the aquarium should have a capacity of 10 gallons. For breeding larger fish such as Angel fish then an aquarium that can hold 20 gallons water is ideal. Acrylic aquariums make ideal breeding aquariums if you are planning to separate the fish since these aquariums are available in the right sizes and are sturdy. It is possible to get acrylic aquariums that come with a hood or canopy. These types of aquariums are ideal for breeding a hood will prevent the fish from jumping out.

While breeding your fish, it is important to remember that the aquarium should be at least three weeks old and should have completed the nitrogen cycle since a completely new aquarium without nitrifying bacteria can harm both the fish and the (fries) baby fish. The aquarium chosen to breed the fish should have a sponge filter since this type of filter allows biological filtration which is beneficial to the fry, and sponge filters do not produce a lot of water turbulence. The aquariums should have a few silk or real plants if you are breeding fish that tend to fight during breeding. The aquarium that you choose for breeding should also have a fluorescent light and a heater.

If you are using a breeder’s net it is recommended to opt for a net that does not stress out the fish. The breeders net should allow the fry to swim out of the net while keeping the mother in the net to prevent her from eating the fry. Breeder’s nets are ideal for smaller fish like Guppies that tend to eat their own fry. Breeder’s nets fit perfectly in standard 10 to 20 gallon acrylic aquariums and it is also possible to get larger breeder’s nets for larger acrylic aquariums.

When it comes to Aquarium Chiller, the Aquarium Supplies are indispensable. The aquarium chiller helps in maintaining the perfect temperature of your aquarium during the extremely hot days. The author with his vast experience with the aquarium supplies recommends buying Buy Coral which is the best in the market.

Important Marine Aquarium Supplies That You Should Have

Important Marine Aquarium Supplies That You Should Have

If you plan on owning a marine aquarium that is filled with saltwater fishes, then you have to remember that you need to have the correct equipments and tools that will make your saltwater aquarium a hospitable environment for the fish to live in.

You have to keep in mind that salt water fishes are quite hard to take care of as they are very sensitive to the environment they live in. A small variation in the temperature and the salinity of the water in the aquarium is enough to kill these creatures. This is why you need to properly maintain your saltwater aquarium in order to ensure the survival and health of your pet fish.

Basically, the two most important components of a saltwater aquarium are the pump and the filters. You need to purchases these two components in order to keep the water inside the tank balanced.

, you have to purchase the right pump for the size your aquarium has. Take a look at how much resistance the pump offers as well as the heat it generates, try to know how many returns that the pump have and how much noise that it produces.

Choose the correct size of pump for your salt water aquarium. If you purchase a very large pump for a small aquarium, it will drastically affect the temperature of the water as larger pumps tend to heat up more quickly and at higher temperatures which can cause problems for marine life as well as the plants and corals in it.

The choice of filters is extremely importantThink of how efficient the filter you plan on purchasing is as well as how adaptable it is. When purchasing a filter, you have to know how difficult or easy it is to maintain. Small channels may be useful but it can easily get blocked. As much as possible, try to choose a biological filter as it is easier to clean and it will be able to maintain the water and salt levels in the tank more efficiently.

These are the things that you need to remember about buying pumps and filters for your saltwater aquarium. Cost is not the most important criteria in this regard. Always match the pumps and filters you buy with the size of the aquarium you have.

In order to set up a saltwater fish tank, consider using lunar lights and fluorescent lighting that will appeal to small reef animals and corals. What Products Should I Use to Keep My Aquarium Clean

What Products Should I Use to Keep My Aquarium Clean

There is no doubt that aquariums can beautify your house but since fish are living organisms the aquarium is bound to get dirty. If you are wondering “what products should I use to keep my aquarium clean” then I recommended you make a note of the following products that can help you keep your aquarium crystal clear.

The first product that can help you keep your aquarium clean is an aquarium python. This product is very beneficial during water changes. It can help you clean the water of your aquarium without any hassle.

Aquarium pythons allow you to clean the gravel in the aquarium while doing a water change without disturbing the fish. The aquarium python is a long pipe that allows you to directly fill water from the tap and also let the water out the aquarium directly into the sink. Most aquarium pythons allow you to adjust the water flow and some of these devices come with extra fittings such as a splash proof outlets to prevent water splashing when you are letting the water out of the aquarium.

It is also possible to get battery operated siphons that can help you clean the gravel and water of an aquarium. Battery operated siphons are beneficial if you have aquariums that hold less than 15 gallons water.

The second product that can help you keep your aquarium clean is a magnetic glass cleaner. Magnetic glass cleaners allow you to clean algae from the insides of the glass without putting your hand inside the aquarium. It is important to note that special magnetic cleaners are available for acrylic aquariums and regular magnetic cleaners should not be used on acrylic aquariums since they can cause permanent scratches. It is also possible to get aquarium cloth mops or other algae cleaning accessories that are suspended on a stick and help you clean those hard to reach spots.

The third and most important product that can help you keep your aquarium is an aquarium filter. Sponge filters are beneficial for aquariums that are can hold less than 10 gallons water and internal filters or hang on back filters are beneficial for aquariums that can hold up to 40 gallons water. External canister filters are recommended for larger aquariums since these filters are apt for cleaning larger aquariums with more fish. An under gravel filter is not recommended for large aquariums since large aquariums generally have a bigger fish load which can cause the plates of the under gravel filter to clog. Under gravel filters require regular maintenance and siphoning the gravel is an important part of maintaining an under gravel filter.

Glass cleaners are required to clean the external glass of the aquarium and care should be taken that the glass cleaning liquid does not mix with the aquarium water while cleaning since this can prove toxic to the fish.

The author of this article knows all about the aquarium supplies. He knows that the Aquarium Chiller is indispensable equipment for maintaining an aquarium. He knows the best Boston Aquafarms and he recommends some of them to the people out there. He knows that the Brightwell aquatics are the best products.

Sponge Filtration for Aquariums and Ponds; Why Sponge Filters Should Not Be Overlooked As Filters for your Aquarium Or for your Pond

Sponge Filtration for Aquariums and Ponds; Why Sponge Filters Should Not Be Overlooked As Filters for your Aquarium Or for your Pond

Sponge filtration is an often overlooked type of filtration for freshwater aquarium or ponds and even marine aquariums . Many persons look past their simplicity as ineffective, but therein lies their quality. I have used them for my aquarium maintenance for 27 plus years with excellent results. Here then is a list of their attributes:

[1] Simple to use, most run on very basic air pumps or powerheads. One of the best beginner aquarist filters due simplicity and cost. But sponge filters are also popular with breeders and research facilities, as they are very efficient yet simple filters.

[2] Excellent biological filtration, they are very porous and can maintain very large aerobic bacterial colonies in proportion to the space they occupy. Please note that not all materials used for sponge filters are equal, there are patents because of this! The Hydro Sponge Filter holds several patents for sponge filters for this very reason!

[3] Mechanical filtration, although they are not the best mechanical filters, they still do a good job for their small size and make excellent secondary or primary filters when used in combination with other filters such as HOB, canister, or internal filters.

[4] Very few “dead” areas trapping pockets of noxious bacteria, unlike undergravel filters and even wet/dry filters (which in my experience are over rated).

[5] Simple to clean, simply remove the sponge and squeeze or rinse in old aquarium water or dechlorinated tap water. The advantage here is the aquarist is less likely to ignore cleaning the filter (unlike many complex filters), which can lead to organic build up, increasing nitrates and lowering KH and ph.

[6] Sponge filters are great in marine aquariums in a couple of different ways; one way is in a sump (sometimes sideways) with a small power head pump (such as a Via Aqua 480); the other (usually in a reef application) was inside the aquarium with either an air pump or power head. The beauty of either application is they are simple to rinse out with used aquarium water, which in the reef application was especially useful in that I could dispose of allot of debris before it cycled and produced Nitrates. They are an excellent compliment to “live rock” filtered reef aquariums.

[7] Probably the best choice of filtration for breeding tanks, hospital tanks, and even discus aquariums, due to the fact that they do not “suck” in baby or weak fish or attract noxious bacteria.

[8] For cichlid breeding they excell, as they are not easily disturbed by cichlids tendency to dig.

    [9] Inexpensive

[10] Now available in larger sizes for aquariums over 60 gallons.

[11] Sponge filters can even be used in ponds. With the “Hydro Pond Filter”, simply attach a power head pump (such as a Via Aqua 2600), then run your return line wherever you like (waterfall, ECT). Or the Hydro Pond II can be run off a simple air pump. These filters can work on ponds up to 1500 gallons (or more with additional units).

[12] There also are sponge filters that are used as a “Pre-Filter” for intakes of canister, wet/dry, power filters and more. They offer increased bio-filtration to your existing system, as well as protection from baby fish, plants, or anemones from being sucked into the intake of your existing filter.

These pre-filter sponges are especially useful for HOB (power filters) as they increase the bio capacity (far more than bio wheels in experiments I have done) and retain the aerobic bio filtering bacteria during filter media changes. With out these Sponge pre-filters, HOB filters are poor to fair bio filters, with them they are excellent.

[13] Sponge filters are great for planted aquariums, they do not interfere with root structures and maintain a biological balance that ideal for planted aquariums.
