Planning is Key to the Success of Your First Home Freshwater Aquarium

Having a home freshwater aquarium can be a wonderful and exciting hobby for anyone to take on.  If done right, it can provide years and years of enjoyment, but done wrong, it can be a painful source of frustration until you eventually give up

The most important thing you can do to ensure the success of your venture is to take the time to properly plan.  Buying an aquarium should not be an impulse purchase.  It doesn’t have to be a long, drawn out process either, but if you rush it, the result is likely failure.

So where do you begin?  All of the points listed are not really in any order, as they are interrelated.  Rather, all of the considerations below are what go into “step one” of buying your first fish tank.

Size of the Tank – Many newcomers to the hobby get very excited and want to do something grand with their first aquarium.  Maybe they have seen the huge tank at the dentist’s office and thought about how great that would look in their house.  They fail to realize that the expense, upkeep, and demands of a 200+ gallon tank are way beyond that of the beginner.  Some people take the opposite approach and think that a 5-8 gallon tank will be easy, but then are disappointed to find out that they can only safely keep a 2-5 fish in it because it’s too small.  A good target size for your first aquarium is 20-40 gallons.
Location – It’s not just important in real estate, the location of your aquarium within your home is crucial.  First of all, those things are heavy!  A 30 gallon tank with stand, gravel, and water will weigh about 400 pounds, so choose your spot wisely.  Do not put it in direct sunlight as temperature control and algae will be issues.  Also avoid high traffic areas in your home as that placement can stress out the fish in your aquarium.
Get the Right Accessories – Make sure that you get the right filter size.  If you just grab one because it’s on sale or a friend gave it to you, it may not be rated for the size tank you have and that will mean trouble.  A proper fitting hood and stand are important, too.  The bottom of the tank isn’t “just rocks” either, so do a little research as to the right/wrong gravel before you fill the tank.
Picking out Fish for Your Tank – This is one of the most overlooked parts of the planning process.  In their excitement, many people go to the pet store and start picking out whatever fish looks neat, is the prettiest, or just seems cool, without any forethought as to how the fish will live together.  This is very important!  It is a terrible feeling to wake up one day to find a bunch of your fish gone because you failed to find out that the cool looking Oscar you just bought will eat anything that fits in its mouth!
Time Commitment – If you set up your freshwater aquarium right from the start, you shouldn’t encounter many problems, but it doesn’t run itself.  There will be some maintenance involved and please be sure that you are willing and able to do it before you make the investment in the tank, gear, and fish.

Once you take the time to make the important decisions up front, the success of your home aquarium is almost guaranteed.  The time invested in the planning stage will pay off in a big way with the years of enjoyment that you and your family will get from your fish tank.

Aquarium Water Pumps – Essential to Aquatic Plant Success

Water circulation is essential in any aquarium, to ensure proper filtration, prevent the formation of anoxic or low-temperature regions, and deliver nutrients to stationary organisms. Power heads and aerators often provide sufficient circulation for a basic aquarium. In a planted aquarium, however, the water surface should be left undisturbed as much as possible to prevent loss of precious carbon dioxide and such devices should not be used.

Water pumps provide the necessary circulation both within the tank and through the filtration system, without unnecessary gas exchange. In a typical planted aquarium, water flows passively to the pump from a submerged intake where it is then propelled through the filter(s), and returned to the tank through an outlet below the water surface. The function of a water pump in a planted aquarium is exactly the same as that of the heart in the human body: pumping water rather than blood through a filter instead of the kidneys and liver. This analogy underscores the critical importance of the water pump in sustaining the health of a planted aquarium.

Not surprisingly, there are several types of aquarium water pumps to choose from, suitable for different types of tanks and budgets (see our selection at Julie’s Pet Market). While perhaps not a glamorous part of setting up a planted aquarium, the selection of a water pump is one of the most crucial tasks to ensure a successful experience. Several criteria should be considered.

    1) Flow rate. Water pump flows are rated in gallons per hour (gph) under free-flow conditions. For example, a 100 gph pump will circulate all the water in a 50 gallon tank twice in an hour. The presence of a filter (and its condition) will reduce actual flow. It is important to pick a pump with sufficient flow to ensure proper filtration. Conversely, an excessive water flow will turn your tank into a chaotic whirlpool. Usually, the filter manufacturer will specify the minimum flow rate needed for the water pump. The selected pump should exceed the minimum flow rate, but be comparable to it

    2) Durability. A water pump is one of the few devices with moving parts in an aquarium, and therefore subject to wear and tear. Some pumps (e.g. magnetic drive) are designed without internal seals that can become corroded. This is more important for saltwater tanks, but well worth considering for a planted aquarium.

    3) Heat generation. The electric motor generates heat that is transmitted to the water. Too much heat may contribute to wear and tear and is undesirable when you need to keep water temperature below a certain level.

    4) Power consumption. A pump operates continuously and along with lights it is one of the main contributors to the energy costs of a planted aquarium. Prefer pumps with lower energy demands to keep costs down.

    5) Noise level. Unless the pump will operate fully immersed, noise from the water pump is not to be underestimated as a factor in the enjoyment of your planted aquarium. You can often find information on noise levels on the manufacturer’s web site.

In general, you should select the best quality pump you can afford. There are fewer sources of headaches in an aquarium worse than a poor pump: noise, overheating, and leakages occurring at the least convenient time can send you scrambling for a replacement. Having to replace a faulty pump – even with another poor one – after just a few months of operation makes this choice a false economy. The selection of water pumps offered at Julie’s Pet Market includes only quality products to avoid you such problems.

Setting Up Your Salt Water Aquarium for Success

Setting Up Your Salt Water Aquarium for Success

It takes several key components to set up a successful salt-water aquarium to garner success. Correct PH levels, the right high bay lights and the right coral reef set up are all key components you’ll need to research to ensure a copasetic environment for your marine life.

The most important set up tip you can get is to gain as much information as you can concerning the proper PH levels for marine salt-water aquariums. No matter how pretty your set up is, if your water levels are out of control your marine life will not be alive for long. In general the larger the tank the less likely you are to have spikes in PH levels. The minimum suggested size for a marine tank is 30 gallons and preferably higher. Anything less than 30 gallons and you’ll spend as much time checking water quality as you do watching your fish. Maintaining proper salt levels will help to ensure you maintain a healthy environment for your under water world.

Lighting is also a major key in maintaining a healthy living environment for your marine life. Most people who want a well-balanced salt-water tank want some level of a coral reef. This is needed to sustain that balance. If you don’t want a reef then lighting is not as essential but if you do, then going with high bay lights as the systems will help you maintain the correct levels of UV for your aquarium. You can buy commercial hoods complete with lower quality ballasts and brackets or you can buy lighting systems designed to light! Most experienced reef owners will tell you that sit on top hoods pale in comparison to open tanks with high bay lighting that is suspended above the tank. It causes less heating issues and also acts more like the sun (in the fact that it’s farther above the water, not right on top of it.) Most suppliers can also help you with setting up daytime lighting and nighttime lighting. It’s been proven that marine life get just as much benefit from moonlight as they do sunlight. For some reefs, moonlight is even more important than sunlight.

Once you have your reef, lighting and PH in place you’ll need to focus on filtering. Freshwater aquariums require much less filtration than well balanced marine set ups need. Bacteria tanks are often employed to ensure the fish are getting the right amounts of bacteria. Skimmer filters and salt filters are also commonly used to ensure the conditions in the water are properly balanced. This is one of the largest costs of owning a salt-water set up and will also be one of the most labor-intensive projects for your tank. However as tedious as it may seem, proper filtration of the water is key to success.

Maintaining a marine tank will always be more labor intensive then a fresh water tank but you’ll rarely see anything in fresh water nature that compares to the majestic flow of marine life and coral reefs. The benefits out weigh the work involved in maintaining a reef tank.

    K. Green has much experience with fish tanks and using high bay lights to maintain a healthy living environment for all her marine life.
