Understanding Nitrogen Cycle For New Tanks – 20 Interesting Facts Revealed

There are several hobbies one can have that turn in to real passion some day. One among them is maintaining an aquarium. This hobby though is a serious one as there is no room for mistakes else you shall land up harming or killing a living creature.
The first and foremost thing you must understand before deciding to take care of an aquarium and its fishes is that prior to purchasing the fishes you must prepare the fish tank and make it apt for the fish to live in. This process needs lot of patience and knowledge else you might land up killing those beautiful creatures.
For preparing the fish tank you must first add the gravel and all other additives in the tank. Make sure that all these decorations are rinsed well so that the water is free of all harmful bacteria. The process of preparing the tank can take anywhere between 24 hours and 4 weeks.
Make sure that you do not use any soap while washing these substrates. Next, fill in the tank with dechlorinated water. Attach the filters & lighting. Now, allow the tank to cycle until at least once the water becomes clouded. Then allow the cloud to settle down. Make use of that test kit to check for the optimal temperature of water and for the sufficient P.H.
Also, be sure that you do not add any new fish to the tank until and unless the water in there is crystal clear.
Actually, when the aquarium is fully functional, some bacteria support the breakdown of ammonia in to nitrates. These bacteria are generated from the existing fish hence they are not there in a non-active fish tank. So, the crux of this explanation is that without any existing fish, there would be no good bacteria in the tank water.
This is called as the nitrogen cycle. You must know that the nitrogen cycle would not initiate until & unless you add fish to the tank. Hence, running the empty tank for quite a lot of days would not do any help.
The nitrogen cycle that takes place in the fish tank clears away the toxic chemicals being generated in there in to beneficial ones. This cycle generates foam that makes the water cloudy for sometime. This is a natural process and you do not have to worry if this happens, rather it proves that the tank is healthy enough for the fish.
Here are some simple points to understand what nitrogen exactly is:
1. Like all living beings the fishes eat food & generate waste or excreta.
2. This waste combines with the excess food that settles down at the base of the tank and the plant debris forming ammonia in your aquarium.
3. Ammonia is quite toxic and hence pretty harmful for the fishes, therefore we need to imply a mechanism to break it down.
4. This mechanism is the nitrifying of bacteria.
5. These bacteria turn the ammonia in the aquarium in to nitrites that are rather tolerable to the fishes.
6. Next, the varied nitrifying bacteria would convert the nitrites in to nitrates that are further less toxic for the fish & other aquarium life.
7. These nitrates are collected & minimized by filters. They would eventually accumulate in your tank.
Know your fish
Here are some types of fish that we recommend you to place in your aquarium:
1. Hardy fishes like barb, danios, gouramis, and other live bearers are known for their ability to withstand quite high nitrite levels & ammonia that are generated in a new aquarium.
2. Check that the ideal way is to introduce only one fish at a time, and gradually increase the number of fishes in the tank. You could also consider starting with 4 different types of hardy fishes, one of each type.
3. The right way to add a fish in the tank is that you must afloat the fish in a bag in to the aquarium for around 15 minutes prior to leaving them in the tank. This would help your fish get acclimated to the temperature of the water in its new home.
4. Make sure that you do not add the water of the fish bag in to the aquarium as this water might be contaminated, or would at times affect the temperature of the aquarium and the P.H. level of the water in there.
5. Before giving the first ever feed to the fish, give it at least two hours to get acquainted with its new house.
6. While purchasing the first fish of yours, be sure to purchase some food for it. Remember that you should feed only small amounts of the food initially.
7. The food that remains settles down at the bottom and rots down finally. This rotten food becomes debris and develops severely toxic chemicals that can kill your fish that is ammonia. So, try to maintain the least amount of remaining food. This thing must be taken are of in the newly set up aquariums especially those that lack the nitrifying bacteria.
8. The trick to do it simply is to watch your fish while feeding them. Only put in the amount of food it consumes in the first 2-3 minutes, that to only twice a day. In case of food, also make sure to read through the label of the fish that you always get on the purchase of the fish.
9. During the first month, make sure to test the level of P. H. in the water everyday.
10. In case the tank is getting cloudy; it is time to add some clarifiers in the water.
11. Monitor your fish well enough for any signs of ailment or stress.
12. The usual behavior study of the fish in the aquarium explains that the healthy fish would swim regularly and the lethargic ones would usually hover around the surface of its aquarium.
13. Hence, water in the tank must be changed regularly, especially when it is new. For the new fish tank you must consider changing around 10% of its total water every few days. This must be done for at least the first few weeks or so.

Before going into the details of symptoms shown as a result of bites from the ticks let’s look at the food the ticks usually like. It is the blood sucking from mammalian bodies, aves and reptiles. Aves are birds. One thing to remember is that not all the tick bites are harmful, because a majority of ticks make no disease while biting the host. The disease is usually affected only if the tick biting the human being carries with it the disease-causing micro organism.

WHY CHOOSE A BIORB FISH TANK?
Reef-One has sold close to a million biorb aquariums since the Biorb first launched, many of which are owned by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow & Ryan Seacrest. That is a lot of aquariums, but, is the biorb right for you? This article highlights the main reasons hundreds of thousands of people have chosen a biorb aquarium and will help you decide if a Biorb Aquarium is the perfect aquarium for you.
If you are thinking of buying an aquarium and have done your research you know that there are hundreds of different tanks, and aquarium options to choose from. Out of all of those choices, why should you choose a biorb aquarium rather than a different tank?
Biorb Highlights – Why is the Biorb Special, Here Are Just a Few Reasons.
• The Biorb’s stylish design has enamored thousands, including dozens of celebrities who own one. (Just a few are Gwyneth Paltrow, Ryan Seacrest, Mariah Carey, & Jessica Alba)
• Everything you need to start your Biorb Fish Tank is included, even a fish food sample
• There are over nine different biorb tanks & sizes to choose from, and several colors
• Biorb care is easy with the snap & twist biorb service kit
• Biorb Aquariums have five stages of filtration for healthy fish
Everything You Need to Start the Aquarium is Included
The Biorb comes with everything you need to get your aquarium started, besides the fish. It comes with a water dechlorinator, light, air pump, filter, airstone, fish food sample, and ceramic media.
A few things that it doesn’t come with that you will want in the future are a biorb siphon hose, a fish net, and fish food, or biorb decorations or other optional biorb accessories.
The Biorb Aquarium Line Offers Nine Different Tanks to Choose From
Since the biorb aquariums range in size from four to sixteen gallons it means you can find an aquarium that is the right size for you. If you want to keep things simple and put a betta on your office desk, the baby biorb aquarium (4 gallons) will work great for you. If you are looking for a more extensive set up with tropical fish, or are hoping to try your hand at a saltwater aquarium, the 16 gallon biorb life, or classic biorb give you that opportunity.
The regular biorb comes in a four, eight, or 16 gallon size, the biube comes in two, 9 gallon models, and the biorb life aquariums come in 8, 12, or 16 gallon sizes.
The Biorb Lines are the Classic Biorb, Biorb Life, & Biube Aquariums
Low Maintenance
We know that this one will catch your eye, if you are shopping for a nice aquarium for your home or office, chances are you do have another life, and you don’t want to spend hours at a time cleaning your aquarium. Great news, the Biorb Aquariums are a cinch to clean. The biorb filter is easily replaced with a snap and twist and the biorb has 5 stages of filtration.
You can easily maintain a healthy biorb aquarium by spending less than an hour a month. Don’t be fooled though, some people will say that the biorb aquarium is completely maintenance free. Anyone who says an aquarium is maintenance free is wrong. Every aquarium, no matter how advanced requires some maintenance. Saying that an aquarium doesn’t need maintenance is like saying your house doesn’t ever need to be cleaned. Sure, you could get by without cleaning your house for a year…but let’s face it, you would be miserable, and so will your fish if you don’t clean their tank.
The Good News About Biorb Care
Maintenance is fast and easy when done regularly. Just a few minutes a week will be enough to take care of your biorb tank. The main thing you will need to do is a water change, every couple weeks you will want to siphon out and replace a portion of your water. (more often if your aquarium is getting dirty faster). After a little experience a water change can be done in only 5-10 minutes.
Things to Consider Before Buying a Biorb
Biorb aquariums are great, however, they do have limitations like any fish tank.
Do a little research before buying the fish you want. Be sure to find out how big your fish will get, and if they will outgrow your aquarium you should choose a different fish to buy, or you will have to trade it in for a smaller fish as it gets bigger. Some fish aren’t suitable for the biorb aquarium, for example, some fish require more than 16 gallons of water, or require running water and lots of plants to stay healthy. If you want an extravagant aquarium setup with dozens of fish, the biorb probably isn’t right for you.
Don’t try to put too many fish in your biorb, fish need space, a rough rule of fish keeping is one inch of fish per gallon of water.
BIORB SUMMARY
Biorb aquariums are stylish, easy to setup & maintain, and come in lots of different shapes and sizes to fit both your budget and your aquarium needs. Before buying an aquarium determine what you want in a fish tank and the number and types of fish you want to house. If those numbers fit with a biorb fish tank, then chances are the biorb will be a great aquarium for you. The Biorb has been great for close to a million people over the last several years, is it right for you, that’s for you to decide.

Strong bounds between cats and humans
There are a lot of experts out there who say that cats are strictly independent animals. These very same experts state that cats have chosen to associate with humans due to their strategy of survival. Although many argue with this statement, there are many who agree as well — although those that agree are normally those in the percentile who don’t agree with cats.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Here’s How Fish Tanks Can Enhance The Environment Of Your Home
It might not be an obvious choice, but including fish tanks as a way to beautify your home is a superb idea. If you have kids, a habitat is a wonderful addition to your home and a relatively easy way to keep a pet. Children can learn responsibility by way of having to feed the animals and clean their home properly. It is educational in that it also teaches a child, in their formative years, how to breed and take care of another living creature.
Today tanks are available in different sizes and shapes. They not only hold your children’s attention but the different colors and hues of the fish will be attractive to your guests as well. They make a soothing backdrop to any room and the species themselves come in various colors, so you can match them to your decor. You can even add lighting to illuminate your tank.
If you choose to have fish, it is best to go to your local pet store to inquire how best to do this. It is important to understand that there are many things that can be poisonous to them. There are a variety of objects such as logs, plants and treasure chests that you can add that will not only allow for them to play, but will also help your tank look quite interesting.
Be particular when trying to decide on what type of water feature you intend to purchase. By doing so you’ll ensure that it will help complete the look of a room. If you prefer a color scheme that is bold and colorful, then choose one that is different style-wise, and that holds creatures that are quite unique and eye catching in terms of their color. If your design tastes are more subdued, choose one that is more subdued in terms of design.
An aquatic feature can help make a room peaceful. Besides it can also be a great conversational piece when having a get together, perfect for both children and adults alike. Water features are one design element that many interior designers use when decorating a home. Fish tanks that are both large and eye catching can be included in any room when wanting to create a sophisticated look.
They are also perfect for offices as they can make a room rather peaceful. A doctor who specializes in treating children, a paediatrician, might want to include one in his or her office, as the can be a perfect distraction for a scared or upset child. Also, a unit that is opulent in design can make a bigger office appear quite elegant and rather stunning.
A number of things should be kept in mind when keeping an aquarium. A decent filtration system will ensure the water is well oxygenated and cleaning it often will keep the fish healthy. The food should be administered on time and a thermometer should be used to keep an eye on the temperature of the water. The tanks also need to have correct lighting installed to keep the occupants calm.
A fish tank that has colorful inhabitants and is interesting in design will make any space appear unique whether it is kept at home or in a more professional setting like an office. The ancient Chinese practice of feng shui claims that goldfish in particular will help to advance your business. By properly keeping fish you will improve the tranquillity of your home.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – 3 Common Water Problems With Fish Tanks
Keeping the water in your fish tank clean, pristine and healthy can be one of the most difficult tasks there is. If you are not very experienced having water trouble can be very puzzling and sometimes the problem can’t even been seen. Some aquarium fish are very sensitive and the slightest change in water conditions can be fatal.
Let’s briefly look at the 3 most common water problems that almost all fish tank aquariums suffer from at one time or another. Even though they often look the worse, the fact that you can see the mistake makes it quite easy to fix as there are some more serious problems that will kill your fish before you see the problem in the water.
1. Cloudy Water
Cloudy water can spoil your whole fish tank and turn a bright and colorful delight into a dirty “pond” where no one can appreciate your beautiful fish. Not only does it distract from the beauty of your tank, but it can be very unpleasant for your fish.
Cloudy water is mostly the cause of over feeding. With too much food, it tends to dissolve into the water and cause the cloudiness. Having too much fish in your tank can also cause cloudiness and your tanks’ filtration can’t keep up with the excess waste.
2. Green Water
If your fish tank looks like some alien dumped it’s gue into it, then you need to act fast. Green water is most likely caused by algae and it can quickly take over your entire tank. One of the main causes is the sun. If your fish tank aquarium is exposed to direct sunlight, then algae will start growing at a rapid pace.
Make sure you place your tank well away from direct sunlight at all times of the day and year. A UV Clarifier can help you solve your green water problem, but a proper water change and a good scrub down can help you fix this problem.
3. Smelly Water
No one wants a beautiful fish tank on display that smell bad. Fish tanks can easily start smelling if proper care is not taken. The bad small is most likely caused by high ammonia and nitrite levels in the water.
When there is excess waste in your tank, ammonia and nitrates can build up and cause the water to become toxic. This is what causes the bad smell. The first thing you need to do is to check your filter and make sure that it’s working properly and that it’s capacity is sufficient for your tank size. To get rid of the smell, you will need to do a water change.
By designing your tank properly you can prevent a lot of these water problems. Having a big enough tank, with proper filtration and optimum location you can keep your fish tank aquarium pretty much hassle free.

Reef Tanks and What You Need to Know Before You Start One

Reef Tanks and What You Need to Know Before You Start One
A reef aquarium is vastly different from a fish only aquarium. Not only will you need different equipment, but you will need a whole different skill to create and maintain a successful reef tank. Although you can keep fish in your reef tank, the main focus of a reef tank is to display live coral. Introducing certain species of fish can help in maintaining the reef environment and special care should be taken when selecting the appropriate species to compliment the coral in your tank.
Reef tanks are primarily filtered by the live rock through a natural process. This biologic filtration is usually supplemented by protein skimmers. Protein skimmers use what is called the foam fracture process to eliminate waste matter and filter the water. A combination of biological filtration and protein skimmers is very effective at keeping a reef tank in ideal condition.
Unlike fish only tanks, reef tanks require constant water movement. Different types of coral require different flow rates, but as a rule of thumb, a flow rate of 10x will be sufficient. What this means is that the flow rate needs to be 10 times the capacity of the tank (in gallons) per hour. It’s important that you adjust and fine tune the flow rates to the specific coral in your tank.
One of the most popular methods of creating water flow is by using power heads. They are simply small water pumps under the water that creates an underwater stream when you alternately switch them on an off. By using a wave timer, the pumps are synced to create a water flow. A newer method for creating and managing water flow is the use of submersible propeller pumps. Although they are more expensive, they use less power and can produce greater water flow compared to power heads.
Another important aspect of reef tanks is lighting. While fish only tanks use lighting primarily for display, a reef tank needs light to “feed” the coral. Since the coral uses photosynthesis to stay alive, lighting is the most important aspect of keeping your coral alive.
The lighting levels required for each type of coral varies widely. While some types of rock require very high levels of light, some only need low light levels. Special care should be taken when picking coral for your tank to ensure that the lighting of your tank is sufficient. As a general rule 5 to 8 watts per gallon should be sufficient for the most common coral.

Aquarium Care Guide- New Tanks

Aquarium Care Guide- New Tanks
When starting a new aquarium it is important to understand the nitrogen cycle. Many new aquarium owners jump into the hobby of fish keeping too quickly. Before purchasing fish, the aquarium must be cycled. This could take anywhere from twenty four hours to four weeks. In an established aquarium there are certain bacteria that help the breakdown of ammonia to nitrates, but they are not present in a new tank because they are generated from existing fish. If there are no existing fish, then there are no good bacteria.
The basic principle of the nitrogen cycle is this. Fish eat food and generate waste. That waste along with excess food and plant debris become ammonia in the aquarium. Ammonia is toxic to fish and needs to be broken down. That’s why the nitrifying bacteria is important. This bacteria, turns the ammonia into nitrites which are more tolerable to fish than ammonia. Next, different nitrifying bacteria will turn the nitrites into nitrates, which are even less toxic to the fish and other aquarium life. The nitrates are collected and minimized by filters; however they will eventually accumulate in the tank. Regular water changes are required to remove the nitrates from the water.
It is important to set up and run an aquarium before any fish are introduced into the environment. Wash the tank and any substrate and decorations thoroughly with water. Don’t use any soap. Fill the tank with de-chlorinated water and attach filters and lighting. Allow the tank to cycle until the water is no longer cloudy and sufficient P.H and water temperatures have been established.
Now it is time to purchase the fish! Buy hardy fish such as danios, barb, gouramis, and live bearers. They should be able to withstand the high nitrite levels and ammonia in the new aquarium. Only introduce about four fish at a time. Float the fish in the bag in the aquarium for about fifteen minutes before adding them to the tank. This will help the fish become acclimated to the water temperature in their new home. When adding the fish, be careful not to allow the water from the bag into the aquarium. It may be contaminated, or will at the very least, throw off the temperature and P.H. Allow the fish about two hours to become acclimated before feeding.
Only feed an amount that can be consumed in the first two to five minutes. Overfeeding is a common problem in an aquarium. It is important not to overfeed, because excess food will become debris adding to the ammonia levels. This is especially important in new aquariums that lack nitrifying bacteria. Test the water P.H. every day within the first month. Watch the tank for cloudiness; if the aquarium becomes cloudy, it may be necessary to add a clarifier. Monitor the fish for signs of stress or illness. A healthy fish will be swimming regularly. Lethargic fish will usually hover near the surface of the aquarium. After about a week change approximately ten percent of the water and begin regular maintenance.

Freshwater Fish Tanks Vs Saltwater Fish Tanks – Which Is Right For You?
When one is considering setting up an aquarium, the question comes to mind whether you should set up a freshwater or saltwater fish tank. while a saltwater aquarium will allow you to have it interesting variety of colorful fish, the novice aquarist might consider getting his feet wet with the freshwater fish tank as this will allow you to gain experience before you delve into the very expensive world of saltwater fish.
A freshwater fish tank has an easier setup in the saltwater tank and requires less in maintenance. it also is much less expensive in both fish and equipment. A saltwater aquarium requires Marine fish which, although much more colorful than the freshwater fish, are very expensive. In a saltwater aquarium, you’d most likely have live rock which can be very expensive but is a great biological filter and makes setup and maintenance of the saltwater tank a little bit easier.
live rock is taken from coral reefs and has organisms such as worms, sponges, and algae still inside or on the rock. these organisms play an important part in the nitrogen cycle which helps keep the water from becoming toxic. In a way, they help re-create the natural environment of the sea. If you don’t want to bother with live rock, then you should buy a protein skimmer which will help remove organic waste from a saltwater aquarium thus helping to clean the water and provide a healthy environment for your fish.
Lighting for a saltwater fish tank can also be more expensive, especially if you have live rock and corals in the tank. The lighting is extremely important, especially if you have a reef tank and poor lighting can actually cause the organisms in your tank to die.
Once you have your saltwater aquarium up and running it requires maintenance just like a freshwater aquarium, however the saltwater aquarium is a little more delicate and has the added job of having to monitor the salt. The environment inside the saltwater aquarium needs to be balanced perfectly in order for your fish, rocks and plants to survive. Also, the water quality needs to be top-notch but this is no different than a freshwater aquarium.
So, if you are new to the world of aquariums, you may want to balance your decision on whether to start off with a saltwater fish tank very carefully. A freshwater fish tank can be just as much fun and there are many beautiful freshwater tropical fish that you can fill It with. Learning the ropes with a freshwater tank will allow you to avoid the heart ache of losing a fish while you’re learning how to maintain a tank. Then again, if you are up for the challenge and you want to have beautiful vibrant colorful fish and live corals and rocks you might want to jump right in with the salt water fish tank – it’s not really that much more difficult but does require that you keep a close eye on your query and conditions.

Corals need an aquarium with the marine reasonably set up, so the usage of salt water could be a must. The lighting has to be intense and the salt content must be at 0.seven which is the traditional level for corals and fishes that require laborious water. Corals are very lovely trying rocks, with numerous colors and completely different types, they’re a kind of anemones. Anemones resemble little fingers that are sitting on rocks or plants and therefore the sight is simply great to seem at. Saltwater fishes can also be added to those tanks with corals.
Amphibians on the other hand are easier to care for and every one they require could be a traditional quantity of water and other parts that are associated with their natural habitats. A number of them like snakes and turtles would like baths and this will be provided. Make sure you give enough house at no cost movement for the fishes and others they need to be ready to maneuver and fiddle comfortably without the chance of becoming disfigured and growing problems.

Freshwater Fish Tanks – Maintenance and Facts

Freshwater Fish Tanks – Maintenance and Facts
If you are a freshwater fish lover, then there are a few important things you should know about keeping them. Keeping pets are not just for your pleasure and enjoyment, you should be a responsible pet owner. If you want your fish to live long and healthy you should provide them with a safe environment in their aquarium fish tanks. Did you know that keeping fish as pets dates back to ancient China and Egypt? Although most of these fishes were from salt water! Keeping freshwater tropical fishes are a bit different because they require certain temperatures.
Tropical freshwater fish live in warm water. The ideal water temperature of your tropical marine aquarium should be between 76 – 80 degrees F. In Celsius, that’s 24.5 – 26.7. On the other hand, tropical saltwater fish need warmer temperatures of around 80 – 82 degrees F. In Celsius, that’s around 26.7 – 27.8. If you are planning on keeping both kinds of fish, then you should have more than one marine fish tank. Salt water aquariums are of course best for your tropical salt water fish, while tropical fish aquariums are for your tropical fresh water fish. But in this article, we will be mainly discussing fresh water fish.
You can buy a lot of fish tanks for beginners which are very easy to set up and maintain at many discount fish tanks stores in your local area. There are many types of freshwater fishes. There are coldwater freshwater fishes, tropical fishes, and coldwater marine fishes. The most popular of all three are the coldwater freshwater fish, mainly because of the popularity of the gold fish as a pet which is one. Tropical marine fishes are probably next, mainly because of their bright beautiful colors. A good example of which is a clown fish, which happens to be the protagonist in the Disney movie Finding Nemo!
Coldwater marine fishes are also popular, an example of which is the Blenny. You can’t find these kinds of fishes at salt water fish stores; you would have to look for them in tropical fish stores of course. A tropical marine aquarium is relatively harder to maintain because of their water chemistry. Not to mention that marine fishes are more sensitive to saltwater fishes because they aren’t usually subjected to much changes in the environment. Therefore keeping your fish tank conducive for your fishes’ environment is of the essence.
Factor in the aquarium supplies you’ll need, fish aquarium filters, fish aquarium lights and if you want to, living corals. A reef aquarium tank is much harder to maintain especially if you are a beginner, but the rewards are all well worth it if you are up for the challenge. Now we’re not trying to scare you off here, we are just elaborating the essentials to ensure the well being of your tropical fish. Once you get a hang the hang of it, you’ll find that managing your freshwater fish tanks are much easier and simpler than when you first started out.
