Different Types of Sand Available For A Freshwater Aquarium

]]>
During the preparation of your freshwater aquarium, choosing sand as your substrate is not much of a dilemma. The biggest reason, of course, is the fact that sand is the most common substrate in the wild freshwater systems like lakes, ponds and streams.
As such, most fish are naturally more familiar with it than with any other kind like rocks and stones and some plain underwater soil. Aside from this, certain species of fish with delicate barbells will not have any problems digging around. Some others actually dig and hide under the sand.
For one, sand has many advantages than the other substrate choices for your aquarium. Because of its being ever-present in many places, fish are naturally familiar with it. They are the best for fishes with delicate barbells and for those who are natural burrowers and diggers.
Inside your freshwater aquarium, sand harbors the useful bacteria that help process the whole ecosystem inside. (Gravel has less surface areas compared to it.) They are also perfect for growing your tank’s underwater plants.
Depending on the kind of fish you have, sand is good lining for the bottom of a fish tank, especially for those with delicate types of fish. There are many species who like to hide and burrow into the sand. They cannot do that in gravel.
there are many advantages of having sand in your fish tank like it makes setting up your decorations and plants nuch easier than with gravel. Sand is not just the ideal medium for your aquatic plants, but it also harbors the useful bacteria needed for the whole tank ecosystem. Gravel has less surface area than sand and that is why it is a less favorable surface for good bacteria to form on.
Advantages
In the natural world, sand is the bottom surface of most fish habitats that include ponds, rivers, and lakes. This makes it more natural for your fish and for breeders, make a note that some species will only breed in sand filled aquariums.
Some species of fish even eat a little sand to help in their digestion. Needless to say, sand is also ideal for the many species of aquatic plants.
Precautions
However, when using sand for your aquariums substrate let’s review a common mistake. This mistake is not to control the thickness of your sand layer. Fine sand has a tendency to have “dead pockets”, which are those areas without any water circulation and thus no oxygen circulation .
biological and ecological filtration cannot happen in sand that does not ‘breathe’ so it becomes oxygen poor. If you want your sand substrate thick, be sure to disturb it regularly. You can have some animals or fish that can do that for you – dig tunnels, burrow, and generally move the sand around.
Types
The importance of the choice of types of sand for your aquarium has been a source of wisdom among long-time aquarium owners for many decades . There are several considerations and you may need more than one to balance your choice.
One important factor is the mineral content of the sand which can affect the water chemistry. The color and the size of the sand grains are also important.
Some fish species are shy and they could be less stressed (threatened) if a brightly-colored sand is changed into something darker. Smoothe rounded sand and fine sand is best if your fish have soft bellies or like to bite at the sand.
Large aquarium shops usually have at least six different types of sand to choose from. Black Tahitian moon sand, Aragonite sand, Coral Sand, Black Beauty Sand which is also known as powdered iron slag, and the popular silica sand which is also known as blasting sand and play sand.
Silica sand
This is the sand used by the sand blasting industry. Relatively cheap (around 100 lbs. for ), it is pale tan and the texture is extremely fine.
Black beauty
Black beauty sand is not found in nature – it is a powdered iron slag. It is also used by the sand-blasting industry.
This type of sand will definitely alter the chemistry inside your aquarium. What’s more, powdered iron slag may have sharp edges which are not ideal for those fish species that continuously sift sand.
Play sand
Play sand is more diverse in grain size and color than silica sand. It is also darker than silica and has much clay in it.
It is cheap, and is sold in large quantities for use in filling up sand boxes. It can also be bought from home supply stores because it is also used in making brickwork.
Coral sand
This is usually used in aquariums to keep the pH value alkaline, and the water hard. It is more expensive than silica sand, iron slag, and play sand, but cheaper than aragonite.
It is made from crushed corals, this is usually white with a diverse grain size as well.
Aragonite
This is one of the most expensive of all types of aquarium sand. It is available in various colors and grain sizes for differet applications.
Like the coral sand, the aragonite can also help in adjusting the pH value and the water hardness in the aquarium.
Tahitian moon sand
Another expensive variety of sand is the famous black Tahitian moon sand. Beautiful by itself, the black Tahitian moon sand can make your colorful fish even be more showy because their colors are enhanced when placed in contrast against the black sand.
The black Tahitian moon sand is not iron slag.
Setup
As with most things (including sand), anything introduced into your freshwater aquarium needs to be cleaned and free from substances (and live things) that will pollute your tank.
The best way to do this is to thoroughly clean the sand by passing it through water to remove the debris and other detritus (living or dead) that will dirty up your aquarium.
Maintenance
It is good policy to vacuum the sand every 2 to 4 weeks, and siphon off floating debris. If you don’t have animals to do it for you, manually churn the sand around 4 to 6 times a year. Churning releases trapped gas (and wastes) under the inert sand.
Move the stones and other décor (and the fish, if possible) and vacuum the water. Turn off the pumps and filters first before churning and wait for everything to settle down before turning them on again.
Choosing the right sand for your freshwater aquarium is like choosing the right landscape for your house. It will not only please your eyes but it certainly helps the lives of your fish.

Saltwater Aquarium Types

So you’ve finally decided to “take the plunge” and start your own saltwater aquarium, but how do you decide what type of fish tank to create? There are three ways to set up a saltwater aquarium: fish only, fish only with live rock, and reef tank.
Fish Only
A fish only saltwater tank is the most affordable option out of the three because it doesn’t require an expensive lighting setup. This type of aquarium, however, is not the most simple to put together. Setup can take a long time while you wait for the nitrogen cycle to finish, and maintenance is a hassle, as the tank needs more frequent cleanings. With no live rock in the aquarium, less filtration occurs and you’ll have to change the water on a consistent basis to remove excess nitrates from the water.
As you’ve probably already guessed, a fish only tank is only for fish, although it’s possible to add some other critters to the mix, such as snails and hermit crabs, if you want to have more diversity in your saltwater aquarium and more efficiently control the formation of algae.
A fish only aquarium can be a community tank or a semi-aggressive tank. A community tank contains fish that work well together, while a semi-aggressive tank is home to lone fish from a variety of different species. In most cases, however, it’s a good idea to stick to the same species in one tank.
Fish Only With Live Rock
This type of aquarium is exactly the same as the fish only tank except for the live rock and superior lighting. Live rock is making a comeback due to its natural filtration features, which is the best way to keep a saltwater aquarium clean and safe for your fish. The organisms that live in and on the rock contribute to the filtration process and aid in the nitrogen cycle. Less nitrates build up in the tank because the porous nature of the live rock filters them out of the water.
Although live rock is an exceptional biological filtration system, your saltwater aquarium will still require maintenance and frequent water changes. Add iodine, calcium, strontium, magnesium, and other minerals on a regular basis to keep the water healthy.
Fiji rock is the best live rock you can get, but it’s also the most expensive (live rock doesn’t come cheap). Generally, a live rock aquarium requires 1-2 pounds of live rock per aquarium gallon. Prices for live rock vary depending on the region.
Live rock also provides food for your fish.
Reef Tanks
Reef tanks are perfect for invertebrates, corals, and anemones. Most people set up this type of tank for reef keeping – if there are any fish in the tank they aren’t the main attraction.
This is an expensive type of aquarium to maintain, as invertebrates, corals, and anemones cost a lot to keep.
Only the experienced aquarist sets up a reef tank because they can be difficult to maintain. You have to sustain excellent water conditions, make use of expensive lighting, use reverse osmosis or deionized water, add supplements, and purchase live rock for filtration.

Various Types of Aquariums For Your Exotic Fish
Posted: Apr 30, 2009 |Comments: 0

Aquariums add delight and freshness to the people’s homes and businesses all around the world. Aquariums are included in restaurants specially to attract kids and customers who come and dine there, fish tanks are included in many more places like malls, hotels and houses. People have a habit of having aquarium like a kind of hobby. Since, it adds beauty to the place.
The aquarium can be designed in such a way that it can be of any shapes like rectangle, square and also spherical. The aquarium can be decorated by using small color pebbles and small plastic plants to make the environment more realistic and a nicer environment for the fish.
Aquariums make perfect gifts for family and friends, the relaxing movement of the fish and water is an ideal stress reliever from our busy lives. Some fish, such as the betta fish have been kept in very small glass bottles, however without proper filtration the fish will often not survive. Filtration should be a key consideration for anyone looking at the different types of aquariums. Most smaller aquariums (under 100L (25 US Gallons) will include a small mechanical filter. Often these filters are not sufficient for a fully stocked aquariums. Ideally, an aquarium filter system should include biological, mechanical and chemical filtration.
When choosing the aquarium, the other thing to be kept in mind is the choice of fish. Decide upfront if you want to keep goldfish, tropical fish or marine fish as this will help narrow down the choice of what fish tank to buy. Alternatively look for an aquarium which allows easy upgrading from coldwater to tropical and then ultimately marine fish.
Goldfish, cloud white mountain minnows, black molly, guppies, betta fighter fish, and tetra fish are some kind of fishes which are suitable for most aquariums and will make a fascinating and colorful display. The betta fighter fish can attack other fish, especially of the same type, so if you choose this fish make sure you keep it on its own in aquarium around 15L (4 US Gallons).
The aquarium should be taken care by changing the water regularly. Some aquariums require more frequent water changes than others. For example many aquariums require weekly water changes, however some aquariums, which have advanced filtration system can dramatically reduce the amount of maintenance needed, so it is often worth spending a little extra on a better aquarium in the long run.
Choice of fish food is extremely important; always buy a high quality food in a pellet form. Brine shrimp or frozen food are often poor in nutritional value and will not benefit the fish. Flake foods can rot in the aquarium, so an aquarium pellet fish food which has the correct protein levels and won’t rot will ensure the water quality in the aquarium remains high and will help ensure healthy fish.
There are many varieties of aquariums in all shapes and sizes. However, the most important elements to consider are, low maintenance (you don’t want to have to clean it every week) and a powerful filter which offers biological, mechanical and chemical filtration to keep the water healthy for the fish.

Aquarium fish tanks can be very exclusive and diverse depending upon the style and taste of the owner. How to go ahead with choosing the right aquarium fish tank is a bewildering question for most of the beginners. The fundamental aquarium is referred to as the ‘all-glass’ aquarium. It is in essence pieces of glass united together with sealant to appear like a container.

The Boerboel dog breed hails from South Africa and is indeed an integral part of the country’s history. From the size and shape of its head the Boerboel has very obvious Mastiff ancestry. Indeed the Boerboel dog breed was the result of many 1700 European dog breed mixes. Most of those dogs were sizable canines, having been transported by the European settlers who need reassurance in a foreign land. Ultimately the Boerboel was crossed with local African dogs in order to withsatnd the conditions.

1. Angel Fish
This is a fish bigger than most aquarium varieties. The black Angel which comes from the Amazon basin area belongs to this category. Angel fish are also found in areas such as the Rio tapajos and Orinoco. These fish feed on smaller live bait in the aquarium. They have a deep well defined body structure. Their fins differ in color. They have small, pouted lips and curved eyes. Some of them have black spots which is quite desirable with collectors of ornamental fish. Angel fish normally live in water temperatures of around 72 Fahrenheit, but the water needs to be warmer at 77 to 86 degrees, for them to start breeding. Keep them in subdued lighting conditions. These fish love the natural wild surroundings, so provide lots of plants in the aquarium to keep them satisfied. You need to keep them away from bright lights, which tend to make them a bit nervous. Angelfish have certain bones in the throat region, so do not get alarmed if you hear a noise when they breed.
2. Harlequin Fish
The Rasbora Heteromorpha is a fish from this category. It is similar to the Cyprinidae family, and it is seen in the eastern Sumatra region, Thailand and Malaysia. It is a very attractive species with a thick body shape. It is colored a silver grey which shimmers when it moves. They normally have a patch of blue or black on the body as well. These fish grow up o about an inch and a half in length and they prefer to live in warm waters since they are from the tropical region. Keep the tank around 75-77 degrees if you house these fish. However, when they are breeding the water should be at a warmer level of say 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the lighting subdued and provide ample room for them to swim around, they are quite active.
3. Scat
These fish belong to the Scatophagus Argus category and is closely related to the Scatophagidae. They are found in the eastern region of India. It is colored a brownish gold tone, with a sprinkle of brown spots all over the body. They are larger than other varieties discussed in this article and can grow to over eleven inches in length. Scats are hexagonal in shape. This fish prefers a well lit area to live in, and you need to add salt in their water to keep them healthy. 3 or 4 tea spoons of salt in 2 to 3 gallons of water should do just fine. You could add sand into their tank rather than gravel, as well as some good hardy plants to make them feel at home. They enjoy eating live bait, as well as a little from the plants. Use a good filter in their tank and you need to get ready to often change their water.

Aquarium Care Tips – 3 Important Types Of Tools You Must Purchase
Getting a fish tank is only the first step in setting up a home aquarium. There are many tools you will need to maintain an aqauriums. These tools range from cleaning tools (vacuums, scrubs, bucks, siphons) to ornamental and necessary equipment.
1. Necessary Tools
Filters: A filter is probably the most important piece of equipment for your aquarium. Without it, the fish won’t survive. When looking at filters you are going to have to find one that is large enough for the aquarium. There is a possibility that you are going to need more than one. Filters come in three varities: external, internal and under gravel. External filters are best, but also cost the most. The undergravel are cheapest, but are comparitively less effective. You can combine a mixture of the filters if you desire.
Heaters: If you are going to care for tropical fish, you need a heater. This will keep the water between 70 to 80 degrees or more if your fish need it. If you have freshwater fish, this may not be needed. Make sure you get a heater that is big enough to maintain the aquarium.
Test kits: These littel kits are used to test different elements in the water. You need to test the pH level, ammonia and nitrate levels. Fish need different conditions to live, so you have to make sure they all right. If not, these conditions need to be addressed immediately. You should also get a thermometer because you need to keep track of temperature for both freshwater and saltwater fish.
2. Ornamental Tools
Gravel: There are different ways to line the bottom of the tank, but most people prefer gravel. When looking for gravel to purchase, look for the pre-washed one. If you don’t get it pre-washed, you are going to have to cleanse the gravel yourself. This requires boiling it to remove any bacteria to clean it. Check with any pet store employees because the gravel might effect the pH level of the tank.
Toys: You’ve seen the little toy chest and toy submerged man. When getting these toys check with the pet shop employee on the care. These usually require cleaning as well.
Plants: If you are going to purchase live plants, find marine plants that are going to thirve underwater. You don’t want them to grow above the water line. The other thing you want consider when it comes to this if the fish you are getting are going to eat your plants. If so, get plastic ones.
3. Cleaning tools
This a broad category that is going to have many different items in it. You are going to need a bucket to use to transfer water when cleaning the tank. You can also get a bucket to hold the fish in when cleaning out the aquarium. A scrub brush and scraper will come in handy when cleaning the algae off the sides of the tank. You can purchase plastic gloves to keep yourself clean during the process. Cleaning isn’t a fun part to owning a fish tank, but a necessary one.
If you don’t clean the fish tank, the fish won’t thrive. Waste and excretions will eventually build up to the point that the filter can’t even control. This is vital to life of the fish.
While this isn’t the beginning at the end of a list, this will prove a great place to get started. Ask around and talk to people who have aquariums to see what other tools and equipment you are going to need.
There are different places you can purchase the equipment as well. You can always go to the local pet store where you are going to get a great deal of information from employees. You can also see what they have in stock. You can go on the Internet to check the different selections online. The Internet will provide a greater selection and loads of information on getting started.

Types Of Home Aquarium Filtration
It’s important to have good filtration In your home aquarium because the quality of your water is critical to the health of your fish. The better your filtration, the clear your water will be and the more fish will be able to keep while still maintaining good water quality and a healthy environment.
There are three basic kinds of filtration commonly used in the home aquarium – biological, chemical and mechanical. Often times the filtering system will include two of these types of filtration combined. a good example is the typical aquarium filter that hangs on the outside of the aquarium with it to go into the water that sucks up the water, pushes it through a filter and some sport of sponge and returns it to the tank through the other side. This type of filter uses mechanical filtration as well as biological filtration.
Mechanical filtration is pretty much what it sounds like, it uses mechanical means to filter particles and such from the water. This is your typical filter that has some sort of a pump which sucks the water in and some sort of a filter that the water passes through and then a tray or tube that puts the filtered water back into the aquarium. These can be the power filters that hang off the back of your tank in suck water up through a tube running through a cartridge before pouring it back into the aquarium, or under gravel filters that suck the water down through the gravel actually using the substrate as a filter and then return the water at the top of the tank.
Biological filtration is one that not a lot of people think about but it is very important for your home aquarium. the waste from your fish indicating pieces of money and food are constantly being broken down into ammonia which can be toxic in your fish tank. Biological filtration allows bacteria to keep this ammonia making the water safer for your fish. The thing is that this bacteria needs something to grow in. While the bacteria can grow right in the gravel bed, a lot of mechanical filters include a bio wheel or some type of media or a sponge that the bacteria can grow on.
Chemical filtration relies on the use of chemicals such as carbon or more new chips to absorb the ammonia In the water. Many power filters also come with a little carbon pack that you act to be with water and putting your filter in this carbon pack will be doing the job of chemical filtration. But the bacteria colony in your biological filtration should also be taking this so many people question whether you actually need chemical filtration in your home aquarium.
Aquarium filtration is vital for any aquarium but the size of your tank makes a difference as to which types of filters you use. If you are in doubt, your best bet is to ask the person at you’re aquarium store where you bought the fish tank and they are usually pretty well versed in what type of filters are best for the style and size tank you have. Maintaining your filter and changing the cartridges as recommended its key to having happy healthy fish and a beautiful crystal clear tank.
