Water Test Kits for Aquariums

Each test kit is rather expensive, although it’s possible to save some money if you purchase a master test kit.
How do aquarium test kits work? The process is very easy – all you have to do is dip the strips in a test tube containing your aquarium water, and compare the color on the strip to the information cards that come with the package.
Another type of test kit comes with liquid droppers containing a solution you drip into a test tube of sample water. Then you just shake and wait a few minutes for the results. Again, match the color in the test tube to the color on the card to find out what the results mean.
Saltwater master test kits look for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and even alkalinity.
Ammonia builds up in a saltwater aquarium from fish waste and leftover food that has begun to rot. It’s extremely important to keep your tank free of ammonia, as it’s the main reason why fish die. Readings should always be 0.
Nitrite develops when bacteria present in the tank feed off ammonia. In new tanks that have not been cycled, nitrite levels are very high. Nitrite is toxic to fish just like ammonia. To remove nitrites from the water you have to conduct a water change. Bacteria in the water and filters eventually transform nitrites into nitrate. A nitrite reading must be 0.
Nitrates are produced, as mentioned above, during the natural cycling process. While not as toxic as nitrites and ammonia, nitrates can cause your fish stress in high amounts. A partial water change will get rid of nitrates, which should be less than 20 ppm. Reef tanks should have a reading closer to 0.
pH refers to a water’s acidity or alkalinity. The pH scale is between 0 and 14. Zero is the most acidic, seven is neutral, and fourteen is alkaline. Water changes can raise or lower the pH level, as does the addition of specific chemicals to the water. The right pH level depends on the type of fish you have in your tank.
An alkalinity kit tests the stability of your water in regards to a changing pH level. Essentially, this type of test specifically looks for your aquarium’s capabilities for stabilizing the pH in the water. The reading in saltwater tanks should be between 7 and 12 dkH.
Testing the water in your aquarium is an important part of maintaining the tank and keeping your fish safe and healthy. Regular maintenance will ensure your aquarium continues to run smoothly, but you always have to double check by carrying out the required tests.

Time to Change The Way You Look at Garden Watering Systems
Of all the different types of garden watering systems there are, almost all of them are highly inefficient. From sprinklers to drip systems and flood irrigation, almost all of the water is wasted. But one water delivery system uses as little as 2% of the water and takes care of all the organic nutrients at the same time.

Time to Change The Way You Look at Garden Watering Systems
Of all the different types of garden watering systems there are, almost all of them are highly inefficient. From sprinklers to drip systems and flood irrigation, almost all of the water is wasted. Only a small amount is used by the plants, while most of it is absorbed into the ground or evaporates. But one water delivery system uses as little as 2% of the water and takes care of all the organic nutrients at the same time.

The qualityy of the water in your aquarium is vital to the health of your fish in the well-being of your fish tank and one way to make sure that this water is in tip top shape is to test it often. You need to be sure that the water is the right temperature, not too acidic or two alkaline and has the right amounts of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
Although testing your aquarium water should be done on a regular basis it doesn’t need to be done every day and can probably be done once a week or if you notice a change in the look of the water in the tank. One thing you should check every day, however is the temperature of the water. Tropical freshwater fish a very sensitive to the temperature of the environment and you need to be sure that the water temperature is not too low or too high or your fish could become susceptible to disease.
Different species of tropical freshwater fish like to be in different temperatures of water. Typically this is around 68 degrees but you need to make sure to find out the exact range that your fish prefer when you buy them. you should have a good heater and thermometer so that you can make sure to keep the aquarium water in the optimal temperature range. Also, when you change the water in your fish tank or add new water you want to make sure that the temperature is the same as that In the tank as if you put in water that is too hot or too cold he can shock or kill your fish.
The PH or acidity of the tank is another thing that needs to be tested. PH test kits are not very expensive and it only takes a second to test the water. using the test kit, you’ll put a little but of water in a vile add some solution and compare the color it turns to the color on a chart. A PH below 7 is acidic, PH of 7 exactly as neutral and anything above 7 is alkaline. it’s best to have your pH between six and seven and if you find that it is too acidic or two alkaline you can stuff at the pet store which you can add to the tank to bring it back in range. Be aware, that any time you add anything into the aquarium it can change the PH so you want to run a PH tests after you add new water, or put in any decorations or plants.
It’s also very important to test the ammonia in your tank as high levels of ammonia can be toxic to your fish and leave them susceptible to disease and eventually kill them if It is left unchecked. Ammonia caskets are easily found at your pet store and just as easy to use as the PH test kits. These will come in handy when you first start new tank and it is cycling through the nitrogen cycle as you can watch the ammonia level drop. Once your tank is established the ammonia level should always be zero and if it is not you will have to do something to bring this back down.
Nitrite and nitrate levels should also be checked and once again you can buy test kits that are easy to use. If you find that you have high levels of either one of these, your biological filter may not be working properly and you will need to clean it and then retest the water.
Testing your aquarium water religiously can help keep your tank clear in your fish healthy. By finding out about problems early for your testing you can correct them early on thus avoiding serious problems that may happen if the situation gets out of hand and the conditions become so severe that it makes your fish stick or even kills them.

Salt or Fresh Water Fish Tank? Pet Owners Inquire
One critical question comes to mind just before establishing a fish tank; pet owners have to make up their minds on which species of fish that they want to raise. The two options available are salt water fish and fresh water fish. This decision is normally made based on experience. Coldwater Aquarium As A Hobby
Many people indulge in various hobbies, and an aquarium is one of them. It is extremely popular, and it requires a little time and patience to set it up so that you can enjoy it. To install a coldwater tank is a fun hobby and it can be done with minimum effort. A coldwater tank does not need heating to be installed. All fish cannot survive in this tank – there are only some varieties that survive here without heat like guppies and goldfish, but, of course there are innumerable fish available that could adorn your coldwater tank.
Supplies Required For Coldwater Set-up
You may feel that the supplies you need are endless, but you can go for a smaller and inexpensive list than what is required for a saltwater or a heated tank. Your first requirement is the purchase of a tank. This depends on individual taste as there are so many different dimensions and shapes. There is a kit that is included with the tank, but you need to see that you have an air pump and a filter, as this is the key to the set-up. When purchasing the kit, you must see that the set-up is for a coldwater tank – you will find that there is no heater.
Having bought the tank, you will now need to decorate it. There are innumerable colors of sand and gravel – include some accent plants so that it looks as natural as possible. You may want to add figures to give it a unique look – you will also need an algae scraper and a net.
If the tank that you choose is lit up, you must remember that it will get warm and this will cause algae to increase, but this can be cleaned without any trouble, and since the fish like light, you could go for a tank that comes with light. Remember to keep your tank where the sun’s rays do not hit the tank as the algae will increase.
The next step after your tank is set up is to add the fish – you will need to get coldwater fish of which there are a whole lot of varieties to choose from. You can get tips from a pet store – they will be happy to advise you.
The tank needs to be periodically cleaned at least once in two months, the algae removed, water changed and basically keep the tank spotless, so that you can enjoy the fish and the ambience of the tank. You will find that all the trouble you have taken will be worth it as you will enjoy the fruits of your labor and a hobby that is worth pursuing.

Coldwater Fish are Good Starter Fish

Why Do Cats Use Scratching Posts?
Cats have an inherent nature that leads them to want to scratch and climb. If you haven’t given them a proper tool to do this on, then they will proceed to do it on whatever they can find, including your furniture, curtain, counters, or your leg! Why exactly does a cat feel the need to scratch? For one thing, they just find it to be a fun activity. It also works to knock off the dead layers of nail that their claws have.

Changing the Water in Your Fish Tank

]]>
Yes, the most important thing for your new freshwater fish tank is changing the water. Why? Well, water changes involve more than just removing water from the tank and replacing it. You have to consider the condition of the water you are replacing it with, and the amount of water to remove. These can affect the water quality, and the state of your aquarium’s health.
Colonies of beneficial bacteria grow on every surface in the tank. These bacteria are part of the biological filter; allowing them to thrive will help improve the quality of the biological filtration system.
Every time you clean you fish tank, you should remove 10-15% of the water and replace it with fresh, dechlorinated tap water (bowl and small tanks need larger water changes more often). While you are doing this, you should use your siphon to vacuum some of the debris collected in the gravel. If you have an under water filter it is very important to clean the gravel when you do your water changes every week, or every other week, and this will remove waste particles, and oxygenate the substrate as well, allowing nutrients and oxygen to reach the biological bacteria living on the gravel. Usually, you can clean 25-33% of the gravel when you siphon 10-15% of the water.
What do you need?
· A siphon
· A dedicated brand new 5 gallon or larger bucket
· A source of water
Place the bucket and the siphon next to the aquarium in preparation for the water change.
Turn off all electricity to avoid any dangers. Heaters can break if exposed to excessive air as it will try to heat the room’s temperature. Filters can go dry if water levels go below the suction tubing.
Place the vacuuming part of your siphon in the tank and start suctioning. How you do this depends on the type of siphon you have. Make sure the other end is below the end in the tank so that gravity pulls down the water into the bucket.
Remove any solid wastes inside the fish tank by gently siphoning the gravel to pick any settled debris. Imagine a checker board on the bottom and clean square by square. Keep the vacuuming end close to the gravel so you won’t suction any fish.
When the bucket is almost full remove the tubing from the fish tank to break the siphon, and dispose of the water.
After removing the desired amount of water, you can start adding your fresh water. If you will be adding water from the bucket, rinse it first and use any conditioner while the water is still in the bucket. If you use an auto-filling siphon that connects to your faucet, dissolve the conditioner in a bit of water and add it as soon as the tank is full.
Plug any electrical equipment that you unplugged before.
Just some notes:
-Use a gravel cleaning siphon whenever you do a water change to remove all the trapped particulate from the gravel and also remove dissolved pollutants.
-Although I love to use the auto-filling siphons and so far I have not had any problems, be aware that adding untreated tap water into your tank can lead to disaster. You might prefer to precondition the water before adding it to your system.
-Always use water at room temperature, never use hot water to adjust temperature. Hot water contains a greater quantity of heavy metals like copper and lead. Heavy metals can be removed from tap water by the addition of “slimy” water conditioners. These products contain chemicals that will bind these metals, rendering them harmless. Carbon and certain resins will also remove heavy metals from the water.
-It’s better to do smaller water changes more often than one large water change. Doing this will keep the water quality from changing too drastically.
-You can change the water during cycling. Normal water changes will not affect this process after 2-3 weeks.
-Always allow your tap water to run at least five minutes before using it. This will help decrease the dissolved heavy metal content.
Happy fishes!!

Aquarium Water Pumps – Essential to Aquatic Plant Success

Water circulation is essential in any aquarium, to ensure proper filtration, prevent the formation of anoxic or low-temperature regions, and deliver nutrients to stationary organisms. Power heads and aerators often provide sufficient circulation for a basic aquarium. In a planted aquarium, however, the water surface should be left undisturbed as much as possible to prevent loss of precious carbon dioxide and such devices should not be used.
Water pumps provide the necessary circulation both within the tank and through the filtration system, without unnecessary gas exchange. In a typical planted aquarium, water flows passively to the pump from a submerged intake where it is then propelled through the filter(s), and returned to the tank through an outlet below the water surface. The function of a water pump in a planted aquarium is exactly the same as that of the heart in the human body: pumping water rather than blood through a filter instead of the kidneys and liver. This analogy underscores the critical importance of the water pump in sustaining the health of a planted aquarium.
Not surprisingly, there are several types of aquarium water pumps to choose from, suitable for different types of tanks and budgets (see our selection at Julie’s Pet Market). While perhaps not a glamorous part of setting up a planted aquarium, the selection of a water pump is one of the most crucial tasks to ensure a successful experience. Several criteria should be considered.
1) Flow rate. Water pump flows are rated in gallons per hour (gph) under free-flow conditions. For example, a 100 gph pump will circulate all the water in a 50 gallon tank twice in an hour. The presence of a filter (and its condition) will reduce actual flow. It is important to pick a pump with sufficient flow to ensure proper filtration. Conversely, an excessive water flow will turn your tank into a chaotic whirlpool. Usually, the filter manufacturer will specify the minimum flow rate needed for the water pump. The selected pump should exceed the minimum flow rate, but be comparable to it
2) Durability. A water pump is one of the few devices with moving parts in an aquarium, and therefore subject to wear and tear. Some pumps (e.g. magnetic drive) are designed without internal seals that can become corroded. This is more important for saltwater tanks, but well worth considering for a planted aquarium.
3) Heat generation. The electric motor generates heat that is transmitted to the water. Too much heat may contribute to wear and tear and is undesirable when you need to keep water temperature below a certain level.
4) Power consumption. A pump operates continuously and along with lights it is one of the main contributors to the energy costs of a planted aquarium. Prefer pumps with lower energy demands to keep costs down.
5) Noise level. Unless the pump will operate fully immersed, noise from the water pump is not to be underestimated as a factor in the enjoyment of your planted aquarium. You can often find information on noise levels on the manufacturer’s web site.
In general, you should select the best quality pump you can afford. There are fewer sources of headaches in an aquarium worse than a poor pump: noise, overheating, and leakages occurring at the least convenient time can send you scrambling for a replacement. Having to replace a faulty pump – even with another poor one – after just a few months of operation makes this choice a false economy. The selection of water pumps offered at Julie’s Pet Market includes only quality products to avoid you such problems.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – How To Change Water In Your Saltwater Tank
Changing the water in your saltwater tank is important for a number of reasons. If you don’t change it, algae will arrive in large quantities and that is harmful to both the plants and livestock in your tank. As the water becomes stagnant, its composition will change and thus your fish may suffer illness-like symptoms as all of the nutrients and chemicals they need become depleted. Therefore, changing the water in your tank no matter its size is a necessary task for the aquarium hobbyist.
First off, the idea that you should change all of the water in your tank is incorrect. All you need to do is change ten to fifteen percent of the water every two weeks, which adds up to a cumulative twenty to thirty percent change over the course of a month. Of course if you are having a major problem with algae or your fish are exhibiting signs of strange behavior and you discover it is because your water levels are off, then you may need to perform a 50% or 30% in one water change. But regular upkeep is different and it is unnecessary to change all of the water, just a portion so that the nitrate levels in the water are reduced which deters algae and helps your livestock. Why not change all the water all the time? Fish become acclimated to their environment, and a full on water change is a shift in the environment. Too many of these may be a shock to your fish, one which they will not survive.
Naturally you will have to brew your own saltwater, but this is no longer as complicated a process as it once was, thanks to one-step salt mixes created specifically for this purpose. Once you have the necessary water prepared, the next phase is to ensure your safety and that of your livestock by disconnecting the electricity from your tank. Attempting to perform a water change-over while live currents are flowing to your tank is extremely dangerous and there is no good reason to attempt it. Remembering safety comes first, do not proceed further until you are certain that all the power is off.
You will then remove ten to fifteen percent of the existing water. This is a great time to make sure that the filters, the inside glass of the tank, and pumps are cleaned of algae or other waste. Now you are ready to put the new water slowly into your tank, but before you do that you should make sure that the water is approximately the same temperature as the water already in the tank, or you may harm your fish by giving them a drastic temperature shock, which most fish do not respond well to.
You can check your power sources while they are off and make sure there isn’t any waste or salt creep that has leaked into them. Essentially, when you replace your water is a very good time to clean every aspect of the aquarium, including changing mechanical filters, as you will then be ensuring the complete upkeep and not just small portions.
Now simply replace the lid, and turn the power back on, and you should see positive effects occur as your fish will be happier and your algae will not!
